Kat66
A good friend of mine reckons I should start doing this but I have a feeling it wouldn’t be advisable for someone going through WD with a sensitised nervous system. Any thoughts? History of depression and anxiety. Symptoms of PTSD. 1998-1999 Venlafaxine 2006-2007 Prozac.2013-15 Sertraline 50mg. 2015 cross-tapered to citalopram 20mg. 2015-2021 Citalopram 20mg (brief increase to 30mg for 2/3 months in 2019). 01/2021 Dropped from 20mg to 10mg, back up to 20mg til June. 25/6/21 stopped CT. Started 50mg 5htp after a week without citalopram in the hope this would balance out my serotonin levels. After 3 days increased to 100mg 5htp. 11/7/21 Stopped 5htp with the intention of reinstating citalopram at 1mg. 16/7/21 Reinstated cit at 1mg. 2/8/21 Increased dose to 2mg. 28/11/21 10% reduction to 1.8mg. 8/12/21 2mg 6/1/22 1.8mg 10/2/22 1.6mg 13/5/22 1.5mg 4/6/22 1.55mg 4/7/22 1.4mg 4/8/22 1.25mg 1/11/22 1.1mg 3/3/23 1mg 18/4/23 0.9mg 2/6/23 0.8mg 4/10/23 0.7mg 11/11/23 jumped off @0.7mg started on 5htp 200mg -400mg, L-Theanine, and L-tyrosine 200mg. 25/11/23 came off 5-htp, l-tyrosine and l-Theanine. 24/12/23 went on 7.5mg mirtazapine. 27/12/23 stopped mirtazapine & reinstated citalopram @.35mg. 1/1/24 increased to 0.5mg. BooBoo19
Hi @Kat66, I do cold water swimming in the sea - I would highly recommend it. It really helps!!! 2 Started venlafaxine December 2016. Started to wean off Effexor over 16 months period and I had no issues at all. Stopped June 2020. Unfortunately, I was under chronic stress from 4 deaths (1 was my mother) in the family amongst other things and sunk back down in October 2020. Rather than accepting this was chronic stress and grief, I panicked and went to the GP. October 2020 prescribed Vortioxetine 10mg for 1 month and then increased to 15 mg ups advice from GP on for 7 weeks in total. Had suicidal thoughts and off the wall anxiety. Changed to Lexapro in mid December 2020, slow titration from 2.5mg up to 10mg. After 7 weeks again off the wall anxiety. I was advised to take 5mg for one week and stop as I want to go 'au natural'. Last SSRI was 30 January 2021. I was also prescribed diazepam and Zopiclone through the 4 months of taking SSRis to 'manage' the side effects and also for the withdrawal. I am probably withdrawing from all drugs.
Hopela
It falls into the category of general health care which is supportive of recovery. Though it is nervous system intensive as you point out and could be over stimulating it can just aswell have a calming effect and increase recovery. Try it a little with low shock and adapt to what you personally feel on any day and how you've responded previously. I just do cold (alternating) showers, it's convenient, I don't always do them but most often. A week of oxazepam 10mg with 1 day of zopiclone 7.5mg and concurrent Zyprexa totalling: 10mg 25 days , 7.5mg 18 days, 5mg 14 days, 2.5mg 11 days, 10x0mg + 4x1mg. Very bad condition reinstated: zyprexa 7.5mg zopiclone 8.5mg, 25mg Propiomazine. Next day 5mg Z. Then 6 months taper to nothing but Zyprexa and 0.0mg again. 6 days 0mg. Reinstated 0.12mg x2 days. 23 june: 0.25mg. 29 june: 0.12mg. 8th and 9th july 2020 also tried 0.375mg Melatonin. 9 july 0.16mg. Made an error of judgement in august and was forced on various drugs in hospital mainly landing on: Abilify injections + pills for a daily total of 5-15 mg (for 2½ month) + zyprexa 3 days of 10mg mostly 2.5mg but started cheating. 14 oct 2020 only zyprexa and due to cheating earlier able to go 0.31mg! 30 oct 0.21mg, 13 nov 0.14mg, 28 nov 0.10mg, 14 dec 0.07mg, 04 jan 2021 0.035mg, 25 jan 0.017mg, 4 feb 2021 0.000 mg

Miffy
I started cold water swimming last summer when I was pretty depressed. Now I do it most mornings. My low mood is worse in the mornings and the cold seems to short circuit that. Plus it’s a routine that gets me out of bed and into the dawn- I like seeing the sun come up on clear days! ADs since 1997. Prozac made me worse. Venlafaxine XL or XR gave me nightmares. Sertraline pretty good. Changed to duloxetine 60mg around 2010. Also low dose Amitriptyline for bladder pain. 2020 duloxetine 60mg, amitriptyline 10mg, HRT from now on Late 2020 started tapering from 60mg duloxetine slowly to 30mg over about 10 months. Summer 2021 30mg plus 7.5mg mirtazapine - latter had miraculous effect on sleep for first time after chronic insomnia since age of 4. But developed anorgasmia and genital numbness. Tapered down to duloxetine 20mg over 5 months. Feb 22 duloxetine 20mg March duloxetine 18mg April 16.2mg duloxetine, 7.5 mirtazapine (despite sexual dysfunction just couldn't manage without sleeping) May 14.58 duloxetine, 7.5 mirtazapine. Feeling very low, family concerned.

Ariel
Reposting a comment originally shared in another member's intro topic: (...) what sometimes helps me when dealing with unpleasant body/brain sensations: very cold water. I don't know whether this works for anyone else, I haven't read about it anywhere. It's something I discovered along the way. I think of it as "home cryotherapy": standing in the shower under the coldest running water for as long as I can stand it. Sometimes that means 5 seconds, sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes I lose count. Usually it really helps, in the following ways (incomplete list, off the top of my head): - the very cold temperature forces me to be present in my body, breaking any negative thought loops or rumination - the intense sensation of the cold is something I can control (as opposed to WD), which is comforting - setting a challenging goal of "I will now voluntarily stand under very cold water" and achieving that goal, despite temporary discomfort, feels rewarding and mentally fortifying; I always come out of it feeling a bit proud and better equipped to tackle WD, bc I am a cold-water rock star! ;-) - somehow it seems to have a relaxing effect on my nervous system, especially afterwards - I don't know whether this is true, but it seems that the cold on my scalp does something to ease the worst pain - it is undeniably, wholly distracting, and sometimes that's the best thing! A cold plunge or cold bath would do the same. Maybe even filling a large pot/basin with ice-cold water and submerging one's face? Roserdl
I took cold showers several times a day in first three months during the very worst withdrawal. They helped immensely but I was SOOOO bad during those times, i now don't want to take any showers because the association is so painful.
