I am a 23 year old guy. I have been exploring this forum for the first time and it has renewed hope that I might one day be able to come of these drugs. In the past I’ve dealt with opioid addiction even coming off of buprenorphine (currently over a year clean), but Effexor withdrawal is especially nasty.

I am currently on 75mg of Effexor and 30mg of Remeron. I have been on on them for about 3 years respectively. I haven’t yet attempted to taper off of either drug and have had enough issues in my life to deal with. They are not causing me any obvious issues, but I cannot stand being at the mercy of doctors just so that I can live a normal life. I had asked my doctor about how he’d approach the issue and his suggestion (over the course of a few months with significant decreases) seemed to me to be absolutely ludicrous given the experiences I’ve read online. I do not know what I’m looking for here honestly. Perhaps just some hope.

Hi, @Pelicans247

Welcome to Surviving Antidepressants.

We rarely see new members who aren't already suffering from withdrawal syndrome, so well done on researching this before beginning your taper. I wish I had done that. You'll be able to set up a slow and careful taper and come out of this golden.

The combo you're taking, Effexor (venlafaxine) with Remeron (mirtazapine), has another name - California Rocket Fuel. Please read the first post in this thread very carefully, as it described a potentially serious adverse reaction:

About going off mirtazapine plus venlafaxine (Effexor) aka "California rocket fuel"

If you are taking this combination, you probably will want to taper the Effexor first with the hope that the remaining Remeron will maintain sleep. See
