eklektos – Weaning off sertraline after 18 years

I have been on sertraline for over 18 years. I was having trouble overcoming childhood traumas and was told I probably had a chemical imbalance for several reasons—I was on high doses of antibiotics as a kid and was told since serotonin is manufactured in the gut, I needed chemical help to correct that imbalance. I have tried several times over the years to come off the sertraline only to be told that I'm not ready, I'm relapsing, I will probably need this for the rest of my life, etc. I have recently seen an endocrinologist because of issues with my thyroid. Investigating the interactions of levothyroxine (which the doctor is suggesting but I am not taking), I would probably need a higher dose because I am taking sertraline. Not wanting to go down the rabbit hole of taking one drug to counteract/compensate for another pill, I decided to wean myself off the sertraline. Going from 75mg to 50mg, I started to feel very good, experiencing emotions I hadn't felt in years. After four weeks, I cut back to 25mg for about four weeks. I am starting to find that my whole body is being affected—muscles, joints, cognition, fatigue, memory loss, etc. After some research on the internet, I found that I need to do this very slowly—in 10% increments. Right now, I'm unsure where to turn in the medical profession as they have not supported this and other decisions (no mRNA vaccine, no flu vaccine, supplements, diet). Yet, I know I can't just white-knuckle through this without credible medical help. I am happily married, have a loving connection with my four daughters, excellent friendships, and a deep relationship with God. I am 66 years old and have worked as a graphic designer/illustrator for my whole career. I have worked out of my home for the last 22 years and have truly enjoyed my work. However, I am currently finding it hard to concentrate and stay focused. I have started drawing once again, which is incredibly therapeutic and life-giving.

Approx 2005: 100mg sertraline
2005-2021: varied doses from as high as 150mg to the more recent 75mg
July 2021: started taking sildenafil 100mg once a week

April 2023: went from 75mg to 50mg

May 2023: went from 50mg to 75mg

Welcome @eklektos, I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling.

As you know now you’ve tapered way too quickly, and it’s best to taper by 10% of the previous dose per month. Going from 50mg is 25mg is 50%. You’re suffering from withdrawals.

When did you taper from 75mg to 50mg, and then from 50mg to 25mg? Firstly, could you please put this information into your drug signature, with actual dates. Also, any other medications that you are on. Just go to the top of the Introductions and Updates page. There’s a thread there about starting a topic about yourself. In the first paragraph you’ll see a link showing you how to do your signature. Thank you.

By the way, the chemical imbalance theory has well and truly been debunked now.

It’s nice to read that you’re enjoying your drawing🖍🖌🖊

Sending hugs🤗

Seroquel. 2019:➡️ From 7.25mg to 5.80mg. 2020➡️5.60 to 4.80. 2021➡️4.60 to 4.0.  2022➡️3.95 to 3.55. 2023➡️ From 3.50 to 3.25.  2024➡️Jan15=3.20✔️ Feb19=3.15✔️ March26=3.10✔️May1=3.0✔️ June7=3mg✔️ July 15= 2.95✔️ This is NOT medical advice.Consult your doctor.

Good to meet you, Eklektos.  I'm new to this site as well, and like you, I'm going to begin tapering off of Sertraline probably next month.

It's encouraging that you felt better after your first reduction.  Maybe it's a sign of the good things to come once you start your slow taper.  I think you've come to the right place for guidance and reassurance.

I have been studying drawing and hope to turn it into a career someday.  While I know you are on this site for tapering advice, I got excited to see your past as an illustrator.  I'd love to chat with you about your career some time.  Aside from that, I wish you all the success in your recovery.  I hope it's relatively smooth.
