Unsure about Lexapro taper schedule given to me

Hello all,

I have been on Lexapro since around 2015, started at age 18 and I am now 26. I don’t remember what dosage I was started on but I believe somewhere around 10mg. Over the years I increased this up to as much as 20mg and reduced it, and have been on 5mg for many years. I also was prescribed 300mg of Wellbutrin 4 or 5 years ago, as well as 30mg concerta for the past 3 years or so.

I foolishly tried to taper off myself a few years ago over the course of a few weeks, and had a really awful time about 2 weeks after my last dosage, and ended up going back on the 5mg.

recently I spoke to a doctor about my interest in trying to taper again. The doctor I spoke to recommended a reduction from 5mg to 2.5, just by splitting the pills in half. I’ve been taking the 2.5 mg every evening for a little over a week ( I started the new dose June 27, and it is currently July 5.  The doctor said to check in after I have been on the 2.5 mg for a few months, then to discuss moving towards a schedule of taking 2.5mg every other day or every 1.5 days.

After doing some additional research on this site, I’m getting worried about the dramatic reduction. So far the only symptoms I’m experiencing are being a little teary, light brain zaps, and today I have started experiencing some unusual fatigue, and a general but faint uneasiness.

I’m nervous that I’ve been advised to do this too quickly and I am worried the symptoms will get worse soon.

Would it be advisable to go back into my 5mg, and try again with the 10% method in the future? Or is it not recommended to jump back up. I feel little stuck in terms of what to do next.

Thank you!

withdrawal history: tried withdrawing from 5mg too quickly over the course of one month 2 years ago, went back onto 5 within a few weeks of stopping lexapro entirely.

currently reduced from 5mg to 2.5mg, have been on this dose from June 27 to today, July 5.

Hi @Nasturtium

Yes, go back to 5 mg and wait for a month or two before starting again.  Brain zaps are the clearest form of withdrawal symptoms.
