Pete81: Sertraline Withdrawal: awful diarrhoea

I was only on Sertraline for a few months - 50mg. However, due to terrible stomach aches and little benefit I tapered off gradually, with 25mg for a few weeks before stopping around 14 days ago. I am posting because I am still suffering terrible diarrhoea and anxiety (the latter eases a bit by the evening) and don't know what to do.

Thank you.

Started Sertraline 50mg in June 23 and on for 8 weeks. Then tapered to 25mg for two weeks before stopping.

My other side effects of withdrawal have been:

*vivid dreams every night, especially after dropping from 25mg to 0.

*more emotional (crying) at certain things like films!

*anxiety when waking up, gradually fading as day goes on

*mixing my words up in speech and writing

I realise now I'm on this site that the consensus is a more gradual taper but I followed doctor's advice.

With only being on 8 weeks, I am surprised I still feel like this nearly three weeks after stopping - is this normal? Or is it not withdrawal but simply 'me' without tablets? Any advice appreciated.

Taking sertraline for more than a month raises your risk of withdrawal symptoms.

When you started sertraline, how did it affect you at the beginning? How's your sleep now?

For the time being, you might wish to go on a bland or non-irritating diet, see

Elimination or exclusion diets for reactions to food (food intolerance)

Histamine intolerance

Thanks for your reply.

When I started sertraline I had vivid dreams, extreme tiredness, terrible tummy ache / diarrhoea and increased anxiety - again, particularly in the morning. The tiredness and bad dreams actually faded as I got used to the dosage but not the tummy issues - they wwre the reason for tapering off.

Now I'm off the tablets the dreams are still bad and so is anxiety / stomach ache / diarrhoea. Tiredness, however, hasn't been a symptom. I will try a blander diet, more exercise etc. and hope it helps - but wow it is tough going. I am astonished that I'm still feeling like this nearly three weeks after stopping, considering I only took 50mg for 8 weeks. Has anyone else experienced bad withdrawal after such a short time?

Thanks

Peter

Among our members, we have a small group of people who never did get along very well with the antidepressant. Many have had severe adverse drug reactions (ADR) within a few doses.

These people, who are tagged "immediate ADR", have symptoms that are like protracted withdrawal syndrome but they don't have withdrawal syndrome, they have similar symptoms because their nervous systems were upset by taking the drug. Their recovery is slow, with frustrating waves and windows, like people with withdrawal syndrome, but it seems their recovery isn’t as long. Since they had a serious ADR to an antidepressant, they probably should not consider reinstatement.

Please read Immediate adverse reactions to an antidepressant or within a few doses? How long for recovery?

When you first started sertraline in June, what was the effect? When did the stomach pain start?

When I started I had bad dreams, tiredness, diarrhoea and anxiety. I don't feel tired or anxious coming off but dreams and tummy issues are bad. Is this normal after only 8 weeks on Sert?

Hi @Pete81

I can’t say what the statistics or quantities are of people who have had these problems after such a short time on a psych med, which means I can’t make any claims about the “normalcy” or frequency of this happening, but I can say that yes, people in your boat DO exist.

As Altostrata said, there are people on SA who have had immediate problems with psych meds, and who have had problems with psych meds after only a very short time on them. Yes, this absolutely does happen to people and you’re not alone.

As you get accustomed to exploring the SA site, you’ll find stories you relate to and you’ll also find recovery stories.

Allow yourself to explore the site, visit the links Alto suggested, and also read the Recovery and Success stories on the website. And please do add to your own thread here as you need to ❤️

*I'm not a doctor and don't give medical advice, just personal experience
**Off all meds since Nov. 2014. Mentally & emotionally recovered; physically not
-Dual cold turkeys off TCA & Ativan in Oct 2014. Prescribed from 2011-2014

-All meds were Rxed off-label for an autoimmune illness.  It was a MISDIAGNOSIS, but I did not find out until AFTER meds caused damage.  All med tapers/cold turkeys directed by doctors

-Nortriptyline May 2012 - Dec 2013. Cold turkey off nortrip & cold switched to desipramine

-Desipramine Jan 2014 - Oct. 29, 2014 (rapid taper/cold turkey)

-Lorazepam 1 mg per night during 2011
-Lorazepam 1 mg per month in 2012 (or less)

-Lorazepam on & off, Dec 2013 through Aug 2014. Didn't exceed 3x a week

-Lorazepam again in Oct. 2014 to help get off of desipramine. Last dose lzpam was 1 mg, Nov. 2, 2014. Immediate paradoxical reactions to benzos after stopping TCAs

-First muscle/dystonia side effects started on nortriptyline, but docs too stupid to figure it out. On desipramine, muscle tremors & rigidity worsened

-Two weeks after I got off all meds, I developed full-blown TD.  Tardive dystonia, dyskinesia, myoclonic jerks ALL over body, ribcage wiggles, facial tics, twitching tongue & fingers, tremors/twitches of arms, legs, cognitive impairment, throat muscles semi-paralyzed & unable to swallow solid food, brain zaps, ears ring, dizzy, everything looks too far away, insomnia, numbness & electric shocks everywhere when I try to fall asleep, jerk awake from sleep with big, gasping breaths, wake with terrors & tremors, severely depressed.  NO HISTORY OF DEPRESSION, EVER. Meds CREATED it.

-Month 7: hair falling out; no vision improvement; still tardive dystonia; facial & tongue tics returned
-Month 8: back to acute, incl. Grand Mal seizure-like episodes. New mental torment, PGAD, worse insomnia
-Month 9: tardive dystonia worse, dyskinesia returned. Unable to breathe well due to dystonia in stomach, chest, throat
-Month 13: Back to acute, brain zaps back, developed eczema & stomach problems. Left leg no longer works right due to dystonia, meaning both legs now damaged
-7 years off: Huge improvements, incl. improved dystonia

@Pete81 It appears you've been having an adverse reaction to sertraline all along. The only thing unusual is that you continued it for 8 weeks.

When I had the dreams and diarrhoea I continued for 8 weeks because the tiredness got better and my doctor thought I just needed to settle down and get used to them. Over the last two weeks of being off them, my symptoms haven't really changed: maybe slightly less anxious upon waking but the same tummy issues and bad dreams every night. Hopefully it will improve in time, but if anyone has any tips please let me know.

Apologies. I know you said other people have bad reactions, but I wasn't sure you said why they would carry on 4 weeks after pills. You said more than 6 weeks on Sertraline raises chance of withdrawal but it is now over a month without taking anything.
