dylboy12: Question about a reinstatement

Hey guys,

So i was on Sertaline a few years ago it worked perfectly. Then i came off it.

Anytime i tried to go back on it, i had an intense reaction where i couldnt sleep and felt extremely agitated and wired.

Then this happened again with prozac (Fluoxetine), and then i panicked and went to the hospital and got put on seroquel for 6 weeks. Following this I decided to stop as it was a horrible drug. When i stopped I could no longer sleep.

Now, 6 months later I was slowly getting my sleep back little by little. Until 4 days ago.

I was feeling ill and decided to try Prozac again to see if my symptoms were a result of withdrawal from these meds.

I literally opened the pill and licked a tiny bit (few mgs probably) then i had an extreme reaction to this and the last 3 nights I have slept 1 hour each night. I feel terrible again and I am so angry that I've done this and worried I've gone back to square 1 with my sleep.

Prozac has a long half life, will this go when it is out of my body or have i put myself back to the beginning again with this reaction?

Today is day 4 since taking and my pupils are still huge, i still feel incredibly wired and awful.

Thanks

Dylan

Nov 2020 - Feb 2022 = Sertraline 50mg

April 2022 - Reinstated Sertraline 50mg twice for 1 week during this month, terrible anxiety so stopped.

May 2023 - Tried Sertraline again 50mg, same thing happened so went to psychiatrist

May 2023 - Fluoxetine 20mg 1 week + Risperidone 1mg week (agitated, no sleep, had to stop)

May 2023 - 25-100mg quetiapine (6weeks) + 1mg Lorazepam. During this time barely sleeping

June 2023 - Stopped all meds, as they were doing more harm than good, led to weeks of no sleep, insomnia and bad anxiety. Took about 4 months to get to 4-5 hours of broken sleep a night.

September 2023 - Tried Sertraline 25mg for 2 weeks , led to no sleep again so stopped.

November 2023 - Wanted to see if my symptoms were due to withdrawal, licked a tiny bit of Prozac powder (few mg probably), immediately wired and agitated, 4 days now of very little sleep, huge pupils and wired feeling. Hoping this goes when it leaves my body. I clearly cannot tolerate any medication. Hypersensitivity.

Hi @dylboy12,

Welcome to S.A.

I'm sorry to read you seem to have experienced an adverse reaction. So you've had this reaction a few times now, then? Some people's bodies don't agree with some medications.

The good news is that you have recovered on each occasion previously. With time and patience, things should settle down again.

Could you please add your drug signature: Drug signature instructions

Hi Emonda,

Well I was still recovering from the last one very slowly. Not sure if it was the 1 week of Prozac or the 6 weeks after of The antipsychotics i took. The main thing has been sleep, i barely slept for 6 months and was slowly improving andd then i did something ridiculous and licked a bit of the pill and boom straight back to how i was feeling 6 months ago.

Stiill feel very wired 4 days later now, like ive had 10 coffees. I know that prozac has a very long half life so i am hoping that once it is completely out of my system i will go back to my previous state, otherwise that may have been a huge mistake and I will have to go through months of no sleep again :(

Yes i will do drug signature now

It sounds like you are extremely intolerant to psych meds.  If it were me, I'd stay as far away from these drugs as I could, and do natural self care.  We suggest you completely avoid alcohol, which will tend to make things worse, as well as other mood altering substances.  The good news is, you will recover from this.  The kicker is, it will take time, but probably not as much time as those of us who were on the drugs for many years.  Here is some information about adverse reaction.

Yes i must be extremely intolerant. I am so angry at myself I was slowly getting better after an awful 6 months and i've really set myself back. Its very hard to take mentally going back to that state of no sleep again for days on end. I hate it. I'm really hoping in a week or 2 i will be back to normal but i really don't know. Very, Very stupid of me.

Thanks for your reply

The last 3months being off all meds for 6 months (excluding last week when i stupidly took 1 pill), my sleep feels like its gotten worse. Its to the point where every night i feel like i haven't slept. I fall asleep , have a dream sometimes, but then i wake up and it feels like I've blinked. There's no actual deep sleep i can recognise. My fitbit says i sleep 6-7h most night, but with a lot of awakenings that i dont actually remember during the night (45+ usually), so my sleep is so broken. Its like sleep for 15 minutes wake up, then repeat.

Is there something else wrong with me for my sleep to be this bad?

I literally can't do much because i feel so dead all the time

Hi @dylboy12,

I've merged your above post here, into your intro thread. Easiest to keep everything in one place.

It's not uncommon to experience insomnia, and waking multiple times a night is not an unusual pattern. Were you tracking your sleep before all of this? - it's actually quite normal to have awakenings throughout the night that we don't recall in the morning. Are you getting deep sleep? It seems deep sleep takes the longest to return. I still run into this problem here and there. I would try to stick to a consistent sleep routine, which over the long term, will help to reset your circadian rhythm.

2003-2009 on and off various SSRI's for short periods

2010-2011 Ativan

2013-2021 ativan 1-1.5mg 10-12x/month, daily starting Oct 21 to help with buspar WD

2016 - Effexor 75mg, short-term

2021 Mar -Jun Buspar ADR at high dose, tapered 3 months

Oct 22/21 - Direct switch ativan to clonazepam (don't do this)

Tapered clonaz Oct/21 - Apr/23  - 0mg!

HI !!

My sleep before had no where near as many wakeups. I do apparently get some deep sleep. Yesterday i got 9h which is good because the day before i got 0, but i had so many red line wakeups on my fitbit app and i can definitely feel it in the morning, i never feel even mildly refreshed. Just wonder if theres a separate problem or if this is all from the antipsychotic/ssri i was on

In my own experience, sleep patterns are up and down a lot during withdrawal.  I think it is likely from the psych drugs you have been on.  In time, with proper self care, your sleep should gradually improve.

another sleepless night last night. Very frustrated as this didnt have to happen, if i didnt stupidly take this pill again around 2 weeks ago. It has the longest half life out of all the drugs so i am hoping when it is completely out of my system I might go back to how i was before?

Either way this is just so difficult, after months of not sleeping I should never have gone back to this especially as i could sleep every night again regardless of quality or amount.

please read the link above. It is very important to understand that these drugs do not work like an ibuprofen. It’s not a matter of once the drug is out of your system You’re going to go back to normal. These drugs actually change your nervous system and it takes time for your nervous system to revert back to its pre-drug state. please read the link above carefully to understand this. Take heart though, because your sleep will come back eventually as long as you take care of yourself properly and stay away from these drugs.
