SonnyALB: Short Term Destabilized, wants to get back on track.

Recommended Posts

Dear friends

I require your opinion about my situation.

Due to a diet which led to a rapid loss of 6 kg-s during 6 months i stated to have some anxiety during my medical checkup. As i had some high levels of blood reading i got tensioned and could not calm my self. So i managed to get to sleep for three nights using benadryl 25mg and 50mg.... than due to a very bad night i thought to start 3-4 MG of Mirtazapine in order to arrange my sleep. Anyway all these nights were somehow Hit and Miss and i managed to have one good and bad days one after one. So i started Mirt on 12th of May and then stabilized it at 14Mg on 17th of May.
I went to a doctor during last week and he adviced me to add 2mg of Melatonin and a supplement which lowers Cortisol. so i started 1.5-2 mg of Melatonin coupled with the 4Mg mirtazapine and hit two sleeping nights in a row. I had also two good days in a row but today i feel a bit on the edge.
As you might understand i do not like these meds as i have heard crazy stories from before.  So i would like to know what should i do currently in order to keep the sleep and then later taper the meds. Is Melaotnin and Mirt a safe combo??? Will i be able in the future to dump all of them?
As you might see i have only 11 days of MIrt low dose, which should be the approach to taper it??? can it be faster?

All the best

Sonny

Hello, and welcome to Surviving Antidepressants. We are a peer support forum to assist in tapering off psychiatric drugs safely, or recovering from psychiatric drug withdrawal.

Your first task is to create a drug signature, with the following:

  • All current medication you take, the dose you take, when you started the drug, and when you made dose changes
  • All current supplements you take
  • An accurate history of recent drugs, taken in the last 12-24 months
  • Dates for recent should be written as 7 Oct 2023, or Oct 7 2023, or early Oct 2023, or mid Oct 2023
  • A history of drugs taken 24 months ago and beyond - if applicable
  • Dates for historical drugs can simply be listed as start and stop years
  • Please do not use 07/10/23 // 10/07/23 as this is intepreted differently around the world

  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses. See my signature for example of clear and concise information.

After 11 days you're still in a window where you can get away with reducing faster, but it's important to understand that you will get rebound insomnia. Mirtazapine is a potent anti-histamine, which interferes massively with sleep. You need to find ways to manage your anxiety surrounding sleep moving forward, rather than using medication to manage it.

Hi Erimus

By the way the dose 4mg does not seem to have much effect on me. It is not keeping me sleeping for enough hours... Just after adding the melatonin i managed to get one good night and then 2 nights of interrupted sleep.

How fast can i go?? Santino is right please give me some more details so i can ponder upon.

the best Sonny

The general cut off for antidepressants is around one month. If you have taken the medication for less than this time you can attempt a faster linear taper. I need more information about what dose you are currently taking, if you can please follow my instructions to edit your drug signature.

If you want to minimise rebound symptoms I would suggest dropping by 1mg every 5-7 days.

Easiest way to do this would be by making your own liquid suspension to consume each night. If you have 15mg tablets you can dissolve these in 30ml of water, which would give you 0.5mg/ml. To take 3mg you would need to use a syringe to draw up 6ml of water.

Hi Erimus

I am currently on 4mg of Mirtazapine and 1mg Melatonin since 16rh of May. Before that i tried different smaller doses of Mirt without being able to sleep anyway. I also take vit c and iron as well as magnesium and fish oil.

Please let me know whether i can taper at this level. I feel this kind of relative fatigue during the day and i want to have it less while preserving sleep.
