survivingnolan: HELP | Amitriptyline & Pritsiq

Hi Everyone,

I'm seeking some support from this awesome website. I was on Pristiq 50mg and amitriptyline 75mg for about 5 years and discontinued them both 10 months ago.

I've done a fair amount of suffering since then. I tapered Pristiq first over the course of a month and did a rapid taper of amitriptyline over the course of 10 days. Pristiq didn’t bother me too bad physically, but it was an emotional roller coaster. Amitriptyline is the one that got me the worst. I had insomnia, gut problems, and suicidal ideations. I thought I had gotten past the acute stages at about 8 weeks, had some windows of joy, then everything started going downhill after being off them for 4 months.

It’s the strangest thing. My post acute symptoms are much worse. I’m 10 months out now and I have debilitating nerve pain and myofascial pain. Am I safe to blame the amitriptyline for that?

I'm considering reinstating something because of how crippled I’ve become physically. Has anyone heard of this with amitriptyline? It was a delayed onset of severe physical pain.

My reason for discontinuing was to rid myself of the common side effects. I’ve contemplated going over to nortriptyline to see if that takes care of the pain. Is that a bad idea? Or would reinstating Pristiq be the answer?

Thank you for the help everyone!

Hello, and welcome to Surviving Antidepressants. We are a peer support forum to assist in tapering off psychiatric drugs safely, or recovering from psychiatric drug withdrawal.

This topic is for anything relating to you, and any questions you have. Please do not start another topic.

Reinstatement is best done withing the first month or two of discontinuation, beyond that it is a gamble. All of the symptoms you have experienced are unfortunately common with rapid tapers or cold turkey. You are now in protracted antidepressant withdrawal, which is also complicated by the two other medications you are taking. There really is no pleasant way out of this. You can either hold your other drugs and wait for your nervous system to recover, or slowly taper in the hope that as you reduce the other medication things will still improve. We need more information on the valium and gabapentin, such as when you started them, dose changes, tapering rate, and tapering history.

We recommend tapering by no more than 10% of your CURRENT dose each month, to limit withdrawal symptoms. E.g. 10mg --> 9mg --> 8.1mg --> 7.29mg

All the answers you are looking for regarding tapering and antidepressant withdrawal are on this site. Please search around and continue to read as much as you can manage. Use the site search function to search for specific words or phrases, such as drugs or symptoms.

Thank you for the help.

Off all medication by the end of July 2023.

Symptoms were gut problems, headaches, depression, suicidal ideations, and irritability.

Pain started in October of 2023 following an injury which led to Ambien use from October 2023 until May 2024. I have discontinued.

My anxiety got worse and pain escalated leading me to me to Gabapentin and Valium which I am tapering at my own pace.

Gabapentin:

1200mg started 2/15/24

900mg 4/29

Valium:

5mg started 2/15/24

4mg 4/8

3mg 4/29

My mood has leveled out somewhat but I still carry tons of tension in my body and I’m in so much pain that I can’t bend or do any strenuous physical activity. I can walk and do pushups. The pain is in my pelvis, low back, and hips.

Could the Amitriptyline or Pristiq be the major driver here that has kept an otherwise healthy and active 30 year old male from recovering from an injury?

I have considered reinstatement, but I am hesitant after reacting poorly to nearly everything such as lidocaine injections and caffeine. I even tried a Stellate Ganglion Block and went into the darkest depression of my life.

I have been looking into NAD+ and other alternative remedies to power through.

I’m open to any and all advice. I want my life back. I was better on them, but definitely not where I wanted to be.

Hi All,

I’m seeking some support here and beginning to feel desperate. None of my doctors are able to help me and I’m wondering if it’s the antidepressants causing this.

I’ve leveled out some emotionally, but my physical health is deteriorating at nearly 11 months out. I’d say the physical stuff started around the 3 month mark, and has progressively gotten worse.

My whole nervous system is going nuts. My hips, sacroiliac, back, glutes, and around my shoulder blades are hypersensitive to everything and weak.

I’ll be up at night with cold sweats because of the pain if I try to conduct my daily life how I normally would. I can’t bend past 20 degrees now. My back is flattening out and losing the natural curve it has. My voice gets hoarse when I’m hurting. I get nauseous when I’m hurting. 7 months ago I was running half marathons and now I’m basically a cripple.

My question to everyone is this:

Could taking Pristiq 50mg and Elavil 75mg for around 5 years and coming off them rather quickly cause this degree of physical degradation?

I am now being labeled as chronic pain patient and losing my hobbies such as the gym and working out. I thought at being nearly 11 months off of them you’d be feeling better, not worse. If this could be something unrelated to AD withdrawal I’m more than happy to pursue it, but I’ve had just about everything ruled out. If anything it helps me to vent about what’s going on with my body. I never had the slightest idea recovery would look like this.

I’m pretty much feeling like I’m at the end of the road. If reinstating would get me out of this, I’d possibly be okay with it. But after doing some research, I see it’s a gamble.

Anyone out there with some guidance or insight on my situation? I appreciate the support.

Yes, none of us can predict how withdrawal will manifest after rapidly tapering from long term antidepressant use. I had been on sertraline less than a year when I attempted tapering, the withdrawal has left me in severe and chronic pain. The good news is it's very likely you will recover in time, the bad news is nobody knows how long it will take.

I would suggest you slow down the valium taper, dropping 1mg at a time will be a shock to your already hurting nervous system.

That’s the plan. I do smaller cuts throughout the period, but mark my milestone when I get the full 1mg done. Thank you for the support.

No no change to posture

Gosh, this is brutal. Have you thought about trying to reinstate? My posture has gotten worse for sure. Has your work been impacted?

We are in the same boat. I read about everyone having brain zaps, insomnia, etc.

For me, it’s the damn burning pain. I can’t even put into words how difficult it is. I can’t run, lift weights, or do anything active that I love. It’s driving me insane.

I had muscle strains that lasted more than a year. A couple in my ribs and back have actually improved now though, so there's always hope. I don't think I'm as fragile as I was 12-18 months ago.

No matter how bad it gets it will always get better. There's been so many times where I didn't think I would survive because the pain was so severe, but I'm still here after 18 months of it. Thankfully our innate survival instinct kicks in and we find a way through.

I remember a number of months where I couldn't sit down because of the pain in my lower back, it passes, I promise that.

I've taken pain killers once when I twinged another muscle in my back a few months back, they did nothing for it, as I suspected. Thankfully it resolved fully on its own with time, although it was a much slower recovery than you'd expect for a normal 23 year old. Obviously we can't touch stronger pain killers due to their psychoactive elements, either.

Can I bend over? Yes, but I avoid many actions due to a real problem with my right leg. Withdrawal exploits where you are weakest and unfortunately for me I had a pre-existing right hip problem that has been completely blown out the water by this psychiatric drug withdrawal.

Considering you are still taking two psychiatric drugs I'd urge you to be very cautious about introducing another variable. We're all on the road to recovery, just at different speeds and different places. I'm still a long way off, but I take motivation in the fact I have mostly recovered from the psychological torture I endured in early withdrawal.

That makes sense. It’s a shame because I took them as a result of the pain from this getting so bad. I was clean from everything for a few months until I cracked.

I also tried taking a dose of Nortriptyline one night to see if that would help get me better and it was an awful idea. It made me feel terrible. I’d imagine any choice like that will shock the CNS and be considered a setback?

How functional are you right now?
