insomnikai: I need your help. Currently experiencing sleeplessness after being polydrugged by psychiatrist

Hi everyone. I am desperate need of help. I am currently facing insomnia due to psychiatric medication, and I am not sure what I should do with the drugs I am currently on.

So I first started taking Zyprexa in June of 2022. My psychiatrist and parents gave it to me because they said it would help with anxiety and depression. I was against it, but I decided to give it a try. I took it for one year, and when I tried to come off of it, I completely stopped being able to sleep. When I retook Zyprexa, my insomnia vanished. As I read through others' experience with antipsychotics on the internet, I have learned that it is quite common. I would have wanted to taper Zyprexa down to dust, but my psychiatrist switched me to Luvox and Nozinan. For a while, I experienced insomnia and severe akathisia. But then, I became stable and could sleep and feel good again. I thought withdrawals were a thing of the past, but to my disappointment, I realized that I could not sleep whenever I missed my doses of Luvox and Nozinan. I tapered those over the course of three months, and my sleep suffered immensely. At the end of my taper, I still could not sleep naturally. I reinstated the Nozinan which helped alleviate the insomnia for a couple of days, but then my sleeplessness came roaring back. In panic, I started taking Zyprexa again and Pregabalin which I have been on until now. However, since starting Zyprexa and Pregabalin, I am still experiencing some sleeplessness. It has been like this for the last two months.

I am not sure what to do right now. I want to start tapering, but I fear my sleep will be even worse which I might not be able to handle. I do not know if I should reinstate to my previous medications either. Can you guys help me?

Can you describe this sleeplessness? We do have some resources for addressing insomnia at Tips to help sleep: so many of us have that awful withdrawal insomnia.

I don't think that tapering when your sleep is already poor will set you up for success. You have made a lot of drug changes in the last 6 months or so and your system could benefit from stability so would hold at your current medications for at least 4-6 weeks to see if your sleep improves.

Thanks,

Hi! Thanks for replying. The sleeplessness that I am currently experiencing is having difficulty falling asleep despite feeling tired and waking up too early. I might feel very tired physically, but I do not get sleepy for a while. Also, some days I might wake up very early and feel wired. However, there are days when my sleep is normal and do not have a lot of issues. But, in general, I feel like I do not get very sleepy as I used to.

I do not know how much longer I can take this. I am craving restful sleep. Do you guys think reinstating to my previous medications might help? My sleep was good while on my previous medications.

I have tried melatonin, but it did not help much.

Have you tried any of the sleep suggestions in the thread that I shared?

I do not think that reinstating your medication is a guarantee that your sleep will return. Making more medication changes could cause more issues with your sleep and possibly other symptoms. You can read more on this at Considerations about "Stability" - Stop jumping around!

Hi again! Thanks for replying.

Yes, I read the Tips for sleep thread and there are several things there that I already do for my sleep. I will try to continue doing them to see if they help.

Ok, I will not reinstate. I just am desperate to get good sleep. I feel like it has been a long time since I have gotten a good rest. I have noticed that my mental and physical function has declined a lot in the past few months.

I hear you.

Insomnia is a very common WD symptom.

It's great that you're experimenting with tips and tricks.

Are you practicing acceptance? It's a game changer.

The brain and body heal on their own timeline(s).

The best we can do is provide optimal conditions for healing and then get out of our own way.

Acceptance goes a long way towards making the process bearable.

Practicing acceptance and patience also serve to reduce stress, which promotes rest and facilitates healing.

Remember WD is temporary, this too shall pass.

It gets better.

Healing is happening all the time, whether or not we consciously perceive it.

Hi Ariel. Thank you so much for your words.

To be honest, I struggle accepting my situation. I often think about how all this hassle surrounding medication could have been avoided. It has brought me so much pain. My parents nor my psychiatrist understand my situation.

I will try to put your advice to practice.

Thank you again
