Andreas: took Trintellix for 6 years - need advice

Recommended Posts

Thank you for this forum! I feel more and more desperate about my situation and don't know where else to turn.

Took Trintellix for 6 years at 20mg. Tapered to 0 during 1 month in December 2023 with 15, 10, 5 steps every week.

Felt more alive and energetic than ever during February and part of March, but anxiety started to gradually rise.

Insomnia started gradually after 1-2 months after tapering.
Entered a very toxic relationship (better now) during February. It destabilised me further.
Started noticing a lack of focus at work during February that became more and more pronounced. I had to take sick leave in May as I everything became too much. I ended up at the psychiatric ward for 1 day.

After that I decided to start Trintellix again at 5mg June 1. After about an hour I felt I could think straight again. Did that for 4 days and then decided to split the tablet and take 2,5mg because I really don’t want to use the pills. Stayed on that dose for 6 days and the went down to 1,75mg for 6 days. Felt very poorly and upped the dose again to 2,5mg for 11 days. Then again went down to 1,75mg. I’m now at 0 for 5 days and have extreme anxiety. I’m now using L-Theanine at 400mg to handle the anxiety.

Now I’m unsure what to do? Should I:

A. Take Trintellix again at 5mg
B. Take Trintellix again at 2,5mg
C. Try to just cope with this and slow down.

I feel more agitated and extremely anxious (afraid) than depressed. I’ve been depressed before and that was a different feeling. I’m still doing things for myself, but the extreme anxiety takes so much energy. It feels like my nervous system is on fire most of the time. I don't know how I can continue like this.

Hello, and welcome to Surviving Antidepressants. We are a peer support forum to assist in tapering off psychiatric drugs safely, or recovering from psychiatric drug withdrawal.

You need to take a consistent daily dose if you wish to persist with reinstatement, which is what I suggest you do. It is highly destabilising for your brain to take different doses and skip doses. I recommend you reinstate at 0.5mg and remain on this dose for a considerable number of weeks and months.

The easiest way to do this would be a liquid suspension of your drug. If you dissolve your 5mg tablet in 50ml of water you have a suspension of 5mg/50ml, which equals 0.1mg/ml. You can use a syringe to draw up 5ml of this suspension, which will give you a dose of 0.5mg. This will keep for 4-5 days in the fridge before you will need to dispose of it and make a new batch.

Thank you for your answer, it means alot to me.

My biggest problem right now is sleep. I can't get more than 3 hours at most and it is making me unstable. My doctor prescribed Propavane, Zopiclone and Mirtazapine but the first two it doesn't really help. Mirtazapine does but I'm not comfortable taking it. I've only taken a few with many days in between.

Would it be ok to try 2,5mg? It made me feel better before. I could just jump down in dosage if it doesn't work, or?

New to this and scared. I feel constant tightness in my chest. Lack of sleep is killing me.

Please re-read what I said above. You are trying to treat your symptoms with inconsistent dosing of different drugs, which is worsening your condition. I suggest you reinstate 0.5mg and remain on it for a number of weeks.

Took 0,5mg from a water solution yesterday. After an hour I fel that the intense agitation in the body (adrenaline) settle down. I could sleep today with the help of 1 Zopiclone 7,5mg 1 Propavane. Tried without but was impossible to get to rest. Still feel a bit on edge but nothing like before. In this state I can think again.

Talked to a private psychiatrist during the morning an explained everything including the 0,5mg dose. He told med it was a bit weird and asked me if I could take 2,5mg instead, and that it is not dangerous.

I need to talk to another psychiatrist soonish that I lied to about taking 5mg doses (did not want to tell him I cut the pills). I want to come clean to him but I'm a bit afraid that will insist on going on the 5mg again and if I don't I wont get more help there. All the talk here about flairing has made me very cautious.

I'm very conflicted in what to do.
