Too fast tapering (Venlafaxine) and increase in aggressive behaviour

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm a 44 yr old male who has been on various combinations of ADs and APs for approximately 20 years.  In 2015 I was put on combination of 225mg Venlafaxine and 20mg Aripriazole, and stayed on this combination for about six years.  In the summer of 2022 I decided to stop, and spoke to my GP on the phone about it.  They recommended a 4-week tapering of the Venlafaxine followed by immediate tapering of the Aripiprazole.

So I did two weeks of 150mg followed by two weeks of 75mg and then nothing.  The Aripiprazole taper took about a month as well.  GIven the other tapering stories I read on this site I am now sure I tapered way too quickly, but hey, I was "following dr's orders".

I must say everything was fine and I had no adverse symptoms to speak of, but I did notice an increase in anger, aggressive behaviour and general impulsiveness which lasted about a year and a half.  My behaviour got me in trouble with the law and eventually I was forcibly put on Aripiprazole again, which I am now tapering as well.  The anger and aggression have subsided, and I'm starting to think I was mostly angry at myself for trusting psychiatrists for so many years.  The tendency to over-medicate people and especially to prescribe and then forget to un-prescribe is nothing short of criminal in my opinion.

Drug history:

16 Apr 2024 - present: Aripiprazole - 7.5 mg

8 Jan 2024 - 16 Apr 2024: Aripiprazole 15 mg

Sep 2022 - 8 Jan 2024: nothing

Mid 2015 - Sep 2022: Venlafaxine 225 mg + Aripiprazole 20 mg

Early 2015 - Mid 2015: Venlafaxine 150 mg + Olanzapine 20 mg

Early 2013 - Early 2015: Clozepine, various doses

2001 - 2013 - various ADs, changed every few years

Hello, and welcome to Surviving Antidepressants. We are a peer support forum to assist in tapering off psychiatric drugs safely, or recovering from psychiatric drug withdrawal.

Your first task is to create a drug signature, with the following:

  • All current medication you take, the dose you take, when you started the drug, and when you made dose changes
  • All current supplements you take
  • An accurate history of recent drugs, taken in the last 12-24 months
  • Dates for recent should be written as 7 Oct 2023, or Oct 7 2023, or early Oct 2023, or mid Oct 2023
  • A history of drugs taken 24 months ago and beyond - if applicable
  • Dates for historical drugs can simply be listed as start and stop years
  • Please do not use 07/10/23 // 10/07/23 as this is intepreted differently around the world

  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
