Duffy4: Intro, Lexapro taper and allergies

New here. I was searching on Reddit for a connection between SSRI withdrawal and histamine issues when I found a post recommending searching this forum. I’ve seen quite a few comments mentioning both topics, but what I can’t see is if anyone initially had histamine issues after discontinuing their medication but eventually it resolved.

I’m not sure if what I’m dealing with is histamine intolerance since the gut issues aren’t there, but the random rashes and itchiness is. It does not seem to be tied to high histamine food, but more random. I noticed an increase in post nasal drip in late summer/early fall but blamed it on my new location (close to an orchard) but I moved in April and really only noticed the post nasal drip around the time I started my lexapro taper. I was also only on 5mg and experienced the most withdrawal symptoms I ever had though I went as slowly as I could.

Just wondering if these allergy symptoms are similar to what others went through and if they ever went away.

2019: Tapered off Zoloft around age 30

2020: Started Lexapro at age 32

2022: Tapered off Lexapro briefly at 34, got back on it, went from my usual 5mg to 10mg for a short period, then back to 5mg

2024: Tapered off 5mg Lexapro between July-October. Final dose sometime mid-October.

Hello, and welcome to SA.  We are a volunteer-run community of people who have been or are getting off of psychiatric drugs.  Congratulations for getting off the Lexapro!  That can be very tough to get off of.

Thanks for giving us your drug history.  All we need now are specific dates, as best you can remember, of the drugs, instead of ages at which you took them.  If you can't remember, make your best guess.  Thank you.

Here is some important information about how these drugs actually work.  This explains why we get symptoms from going off of these medications.  It's quite possible that your histamine issues may be a result of your withdrawing from Lexapro.  I can tell you from my own personal experience that it can take our brains and bodies many months, even years, to fully adjust to being off these drugs.  If you check out this next link, you will understand why this is so.

Here is our topic on histamine food intolerance.  I realize yours may not be connected to foods, but you may still find some insights in here.

This next link contains the search results I got when I did a search on the forum for the word histamine in the symptoms and tapering forums.  See if anything in here helps you.

I personally have not had worse allergy symptoms as a result of withdrawal.  You are welcome to look around in the Introductions and Updates forum, and see if anyone in there has had similar issues.  Good luck!
