Hello everyone,

After a toxic relationship that lasted three years, coupled with phone harassment, I developed anxiety, social phobia, and depression.

I spent 8–9 months in psychotherapy, but unfortunately, it didn’t seem to help me recover fully. I realized later that it might not have worked for me because I wasn’t provided with practical, actionable advice during my lowest moments—such as changing my phone number, maintaining healthy eating habits, or focusing on sleep. As a result, my mental health worsened, leading to deeper anxiety and depression.

Eventually, I consulted a doctor who prescribed 20mg of paroxetine. Unfortunately, I had a bad reaction to it. My doctor then switched me to 5mg of escitalopram, believing that the paroxetine dose might have been too high. However, after three months on escitalopram, I stopped it cold turkey while hospitalized, thinking it was okay as my doctor reassured me it was a low dose. But the withdrawal symptoms were much more intense than expected: flu-like symptoms, headaches, blurry vision, cognitive and physical issues, dizziness, tinnitus, weight loss, brain fog, brain zaps—the list goes on.

For about a year, it felt like I was trapped in a dark place. But now, 15–16 months after stopping, I can finally see the light again. I feel 80–90% like my pre-medication self, and I continue to notice gradual improvements.

This journey has had a big impact on my life—I lost two jobs along the way. However, I’m optimistic because I know I can find another job when I’m ready. For now, I view work as something to occupy my mind rather than as a source of stress, which has been helpful during my recovery.

Here’s what has helped me heal:

Staying away from stress and toxic people.

Avoiding alcohol, sugar, caffeine, drugs, and unnecessary medications.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet.

Engaging in calm physical activities like walking.

I’ve come to believe in the body’s natural ability to heal itself when given the right environment and tools. Recovery takes time, but it is possible. I’ve learned to focus on progress, not perfection, and to take each day as it comes.

To anyone reading this who might be struggling: don’t give up! There is real hope for healing, even when it feels far away. Trust in your resilience and give yourself the care and patience you need. ❤️

This makes me do angry. My doctor said the same thing. It was only a ‘light’ antidepressant because it’s such a small dose, and it would take a few weeks to taper off.

Of course the reality is Lexapro is prescribed in a smaller dose than other SSRIs because it’s much more concentrated, and 1mg of Escitalopram is much more powerful than 1mg of most other SSRIs.

So tapering 1mg of Lexapro can be the equivalent on 5mg of the alternatives. Unfortunately a lot of doctors don’t understand this.

Happy to hear you’re well on the way to recovery though!

Oct 2018 - Jun 2020: 10 mg per day generic Escitalopram in pill form.

Jul 2020 - Aug 2020: Switched to 9 mg per day of Cipralex drops to aid tapering.

Sep 2020 - Oct 2020: Taper to 8 mg.

Nov 2020 - Dec 2020: Taper to 7 mg.

Jan 2021 - Feb 2021: Taper to 6 mg.

Mar 2021 - Apr 2021: Taper to 5 mg.

May 2021 - Jun 2021: Taper to 4 mg.

I'm a bit puzzled why this thread is in the Success Stories! It sounds like you're making progress though, so good for that!

-Since 2017-ish I've been on Cymbalta & Mirtazapine. At max dose it was 120mg cymbalta and 45mg mirtazapine. This combo was meant to deal with a depressive episode and it worked. Over the next few years I tapered down from those high doses. I had tried to get off the cymbalta twice and had to reinstate twice. I don't remember when. Maybe 2018? 2019?

-Since 2020 I've been stable 20mg cymbalta and 7.5mg mirtazapine (this is mainly for sleep now). I have come off of the mirtazapine before without trouble, but still take it occasionally for sleep.

-August 2nd began taking 10mg prozac as a bridge to attempt to get off cymbalta. Took 10mg for about a week then 20mg for a few days. Stopped taking the cymbalta and was doing okay for a bit, but things didn't seem to get better and maybe have been getting worse.

-8/25/2021 - 20mg cymbalta and struggling. Stopped the prozac. I'm struggling, but I can probably ride this out if I had to. My concern is that things will continue to get worse, as they seem to be doing.

-8/29/2021 - things started to get worse. Probably prozac withdrawal. Reinstated 20mg prozac.

-9/2/2021 - 20mg cymbalta, 5mg prozac, 7.5 mg mirtazapine --> 9/24/2021 - 20mg cymbalta, 5mg prozac, 3.75 mg mirtazapine -->

11/7/2021 - 20mg cymbalta, 3.75mg prozac, 3.75 mg mirtazapine --> 4/24/2022 - 20mg cymbalta, 3.75mg prozac   --> 6/5/2022 - 20mg cymbalta, 3.33mg prozac

-4/25/2024 - Finally started tapering again this year after a long break and some unrelated health matters. I'm now down to just 15mg of cymbalta/duloxetine and doing well!

-6/1/2024 - 5mg Cymbalta ____ 6/26/2024 - 2.5mg Cymbalta

-7/6/2024 - 0mg Cymbalta (Note, I got cocky and went to fast. Don't do that!) ____ 7/24/2024 - reinstated 5 beads (roughly 1mg) and holding

Every wave is one wave closer to the final one. 🏄‍♂️
