jaschembra going off Pristiq

100mg Pristiq for 2 years.  1 month ago, w/Dr. advise, I went from 100 to 50mg.  After 2 wks, she suggested 1 day on, 1 day off... Well, my 1st day off was okay, but the next day was a nightmare of being sick...It was a Sun.  I took my 50mg and even the next day, I couldn't go to work/function until late afternoon.  No way was that going to work.  So now, I've been on the 50 for 2 more weeks.  yesterday, I took the Pristiq in the a.m. and at bedtime, I started Prozac 20mg.  I'm to stop the Pristiq and stay on the Prozac at least 6 weeks, then visit the doctor to discuss weaning off.  I'm assuming that will be 10mg, then liquid.  If I would have known or educated myself about the withdrawals of Pristiq, I wouldn't have ever gotten on them.  Well, they all have withdrawal - but Pristiq only goes to 50mg, which is crazy to try and get off of.  Any insight would be appreciated.  I pray this next step goes well.

Welcome, jaschembra.

I moved your post to start your Introductions topic, where you can track your progress.

You've read the tapering Pristiq topic -- yes, it's a crime that there's no way to go off Pristiq gradually.

Please let us know how you do with the switch to Prozac.

Day 2 and I'm definitely not feeling like I did when attempting the 1 day on/1 day off process the Dr. suggested.  Praying this works much better.  I have the Pristiq hidden and the Prozac next to my bed so I remember to take it at night.  I'm afraid I would forget and take the Pristiq in the a.m.

The switch from 50 mg Pristiq to 20 mg Prozac is going well.  The first week to week and a half - I was tired a lot, or my eyes felt tired.  I went to the gym as usual and I'm feeling pretty normal now.  It's been 2 weeks tomorrow.  I'm to stay on this for 6 weeks before we discuss the weaning process.  At least now I'm on a drug that can be weaned down in small increments.  Not like Pristiq that has 50 mg and that's it!!!

That is great news Jaschembra, I'm glad the switch to prozac has gone so well for you.

It's good that you are planning to hold for a while before starting to taper.  :)

Here is the topic for tapering prozac.

Yes, please keep us posted.

Don't be alarmed if there are ups and downs, that's normal and doesn't mean it's not going to work, there just may be some rocky times before you stabilize on the Prozac. Hang in there.

Please do read over our thread in the Tapering section on tapering off Prozac and similar drugs. Given what you've been through I'd highly recommend going with the "no more than 10% cuts" approach, even if your doctor thinks you can go faster.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Feb 15 2010:  300 mg Neurontin  200 Lamictal   10 Celexa      0.65 Xanax   and 5 mg Ambien

Feb 10 2014:   62 Lamictal    1.1 Celexa         0.135 Xanax    1.8 Valium

Feb 10 2015:   50 Lamictal      0.875 Celexa    0.11 Xanax      1.5 Valium

Feb 15 2016:   47.5 Lamictal   0.75 Celexa      0.0875 Xanax    1.42 Valium

2/12/20             12                       0.045               0.007                   1

May 2021            7                       0.01                  0.0037                1

Oct 2022       4.5 mg Lamictal    (off Celexa, off Xanax)   0.95 Valium    Ambien, 1/4 to 1/2 of a 5 mg tablet

I've been on the 20 mg of Prozac for 6 weeks.  All is good right now.   Next move per the Dr. is 10 mg. for 4 weeks.  I'm starting the 10 mg. tomorrow night (that's when she has had me taking the Prozac)   Then 5 mg. for 4 weeks, then stop....  I told her I would want to go as slow as necessary to avoid side effects.

We'll see how that goes....  I'm off to read the tapering section Rhi.  Thanks.

Hi jaschambra,

Its great that you have now stabilized on Prozac.  We suggest starting out with a slow taper of 10% per month, to minimize withdrawal symptoms.  What your doctor has recommended would be a 50% cut.  Please see our section about tapering Prozac here:

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/759-tips-for-tapering-off-prozac-fluoxetine/?hl=prozac

Also, here is some information about why we recommend reductions of no more than 10% here:

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/1024-why-taper-by-10-of-my-dosage/

Please let us know what you decide to do.

Hi.  Last night I did start with the 10 mg. (20 mg tablets, broken in half on the line), but today, I decided to go ahead and pick up the prescription the Dr. had which was 10 mg tablets.

With that, I plan on breaking the 10 mg in half too....  I'll take a total of 15 mg.  That will be a 25% wean versus the Dr. recommended 50% wean.

I've read here and elsewhere.... The number of people with withdrawal symptoms is low enough that the doctors state it is not common (which mine did) - and  don't agree with that statement from the Dr.  I've also read enough to know it is definitely a problem with these drugs.  Granted, sometimes you still need them - I hope I don't.  However, if I would have known some of this before going on them years ago, I would have possibly done things differently, if at all possible.

So... now, I don't care how long it takes - I'll stay on the 15 mg for a month and then go to 10 mg.

I hope that schedule works for you. We often see people here with severe withdrawal symptoms after a 25% taper. (Your second step down from 15mg to 10mg would be a 33% drop.)

This is why we recommend tapering by 10%. You might be able to decrease by more often than 4 weeks, but the smaller decreases are less of a shock to the nervous system.

But -- sometimes people do go off rapidly and do all right, too. This is what the doctors base their erroneous assumptions on. Also, it can take weeks before withdrawal symptoms become apparent, and they don't follow people that long.

I'd take advantage of this time that you're spending now holding, to read up and learn about your tapering options. If the current cut turns out to be too rough for you then you'll have some ideas of what your alternatives could be. Prozac comes in a liquid, it can be easy to taper it by smaller increments. You might need to find a doctor who's more understanding of withdrawal issues if your current one refuses to cooperate with you.

Again, those are good things to look into now, while you're holding your current dose.

I would highly recommend exploring possibilities that would allow you the option of tapering more slowly. Most doctors know very little about AD withdrawal.

Hi all.  Thought I would give an update.  All is going well.  I was on the 15 mg of Prozac (went from 20 to 15 instead of 10 like the dr. ordered) for 4 weeks and have had zero symptoms.  Sunday night I started the 10 mg. and so far so good.  I will stay at this dose for at least 4 weeks.  I have been feeling really good.  I am hoping when I am completely off this medicine, and it is completely out of my system that I continue to feel so good.  I am also hoping that my withdraw symptoms, when beginning this process, were all related to that darn Pristiq.   I still think it's crazy for a company to only make 50 mg. dosage and think that people can come off that high of a dosage, cold turkey.   Anyway, so far so good.....

Wyeth, now Pfizer, doesn't care whether people come off Pristiq safely or not. The FDA has been in "negotiations" with the manufacturer for lower dosages since Pristiq was approved in 2007.

After you're good and stable on Prozac, please consider a very gradual reduction, just in case.

Thought I'd check in.  I've been on 5mg Prozac now for just over 4 weeks.  In another week or 2, I'm either going to 2.5 or off completely.  All has been good and I actually feel better than I have in a long time.   I'll check back...

Went from the 5mg to breaking those in half as best I can. So, 2.5 now for nearly 2 weeks. It's amazing how sensitive your brain can be with these drugs. I feel good still though. Thanks to this board - it's good to know you're not alone going through these struggles of getting off the drug!

I'm glad to hear that you are still feeling good, but please consider slowing down, you are making 50% cuts.  Often people start having withdrawal symptoms as the dose gets lower. There is some science behind why we suggest the percentage reductions we do, this paper shows why.

Hi LexAnger, I have now been completely off Prozac for over 4 weeks.  I think I've lost track...  I will say, while I was on the Prozac, it seemed a lot nicer to me than the Pristiq that I was on.  I was on Lexapro a long long time ago so I cannot compare it to Prozac.

I am so, so glad to be off these meds and I pray for those who must be on them that you can find the right amount and kind to work for you.

When I was breaking 10 mg to 5 mg, and taking the 5mg and breaking those to 2.5 mg - I felt like I wasn't getting equal measurements on a daily basis... I may have had just a tad bid of tired eyes here and there, which ultimately made me decide to take the plunge and just stop - I didn't have any side effects at that point.  I will say.... even though I was moving faster than you recommend on this board - it was MUCH slower than my doctor recommended.  The doctors just don't realize (or don't want to see) how much of a hold these medicines can have on people).  I will stay in touch.
