I have been having good results with coq10 for my fatigue and depression. Has anyone else tried? There was an interesting post about AD and how they may cause damage to mitochondria and coq10 helps mitochondria from what i understand. Anyways, I have experienced and improvement in energy and mood and take 200mg on an empty stomach.

This has been recommended to me and I take 50mg-60mg a day. Hard to tell if it's working.

Hey everyone! I am here to let you know that co q 10 really helped my energy levels about two weeks after I took it. After the age 30 our co q 10 levels drop and continue to drop. Basically it works on the mitochondria in our cells and that controls our energy etc(looks it up). It helps with anxiety ,depression and fatigue and tons of other things. I am so impressed because I know for a fact it has helped my energy levels as they are out of the roof now :). I have found by reading on it that 100-200mg is the common dose so I'm taking 150mg. It is more pricey but totally worth a try. Before you run out and buy it you have to make sure you aren't taking drugs that interact with it. Oh and if people are on stations it really helps you out. Check with your doctor first this is just advice for what worked for me. But wow has it ever worked, also it takes 3-4 weeks at the right dose to feel the benefits :) any questions send me a inbox msg.

If you try COQ10, please start with a very low dose. I think the lowest dosage available is about 30mg. You might try half of this to start. COQ10 can be activating.

You can cut up a tablet and open the capsule and take some of the powder out. I suggest trying a quarter of 100mg, or 25mg.

And yet no functional advantages have been shown for ubiquinol, which is quite a bit more expensive.

I had been taking this because I read it helped with gum disease. Recently, I decided to resume taking it.

Well, on a totally unrelated note, my blood pressure at the ENT's office yesterday was 122/90 after previous readings of 147/90.   Interestingly, I read this helps with blood pressure although obviously, I can't claim on just one reading that this is helping. But obviously,  I am going to keep consuming it to see if this continues.

Interesting Alto that ubiquionol shows no advantages.  I am such a sucker for these claims unfortunately so I greatly appreciate your common sense approach.

I tried Coq10 and then Ubiquinol for a total of 3 months. No relief of chronic fatigue symptoms. I was taking up to 300mg of first CoQ10 and then switched to 300mg of Ubiquinol. I also take effexor. No interactions. No benefits. Nothing.

Jan.24/2013 - 30mg; May 26/2013 - 27mg (started 10% method - too much)

Dec.25/2013 - 27.3mg (no relief after 7 month hold; slow updose)

Mar.6/2014 - 37.5mg (3.5 year hold, no improvement);

Sorry to hear that Drug Slave.  I know when you have hopes that a supplement can help with your issues, it is very disappointing when it doesn't.  Hope you find some relief.

I continue to take it not only for the blood pressure issue because according to various sites, it helps to deal with side effects of anesthesia.    I will let people know what type of readings I get when I go for surgery in two weeks as it will be interesting to see what happens.

This is the supplement advocated by

http://spacedoc.com/

A NASA doctor who says statins damaged his mitochondria and this is used to help heal it.

I tried it when I first learned of it but was having many other issues at the time I too wonder if it matters which brand.... I know not all supplements are checked to see if they are real.

from the space doc site seems they already checked which ones are better...

http://spacedoc.com/stephen_sinatra_3

"If I had to prescribe a statin, I always made sure the patient took an ample amount of supplemental CoQ10 - at least 100 mg daily and taken with a meal. I would avoid CoQ10 sold in the capsule form, that is, capsules containing powder.  They do not absorb particularly well.

The best form, according to research and my own clinical experience, is hydrosoluble CoQ10 (Q-Gel) contained in soft gels. These superior products are available in health food stores.  Most of my patients, whether they took statins or not, took CoQ10 because it provides a solid boost to energy and wellbeing.

Along those same lines I also encouraged patients to supplement routinely with carnitine.  This amino acid, one of my top five supplements, produces a jackpot of cardiac, muscle, energy, and anti-aging benefits.  I was already so impressed ten years ago that I wrote a book on it: L-Carnitine and the Heart (Keats)"

Of course there is much more at the link... but one thing I noticed was this L- Carnitine supposedly helps with chemical sensitivities that I have in major way... as does Muddles and a few others.

I am NOT a supplement advocate.  They generally and consistently make me worse.  Only a few things have helped the L. Reuteri which I am still messing around with and tiny bits of taurine when I feel the too much coffee feeling... that is it for me and supplements... I now consistently take 400mg of vit E daily on orders from the liver specialist...

Truth from me to you ... when I could not think... was swollen big in pain having trouble lifting my legs to walk...Bp was out of control  I started the Bio Gaia at 5 drops it was almost like magic how quickly it helped me... I have put it on my gum one drop at a time to stop my teeth from hurting... and it worked. Sounds odd but true... with all the suffering I have had caused by supplements I would never suggest one that did not help me.... I know how bad this can be.

Still I am not suggesting anything because I don't want to hurt anyone like I have been... it is all your own choice.  I was never going take another supplement but when push came to shove I did cave.

Off all SSRIs as at November 2016.

Been on SSRIs (mainly Lexapro) for around 15 years.

failed attempts to go cold turkey before I got proper info on it.

Over last 2 years I've slowly gone from 20 mg Lexapro to 2.5 mg Lexapro.

on 25th Jan 2015 I've now moved to home made liquid Lexapro.

Plan is to drop roughly 0.2 mg per month over the next 1-2 years.

25th Jan 2015 2.5 mg Lexapro liquid.

24th Mar 2016 1.0 mg lexapro (crushed tablet mixed and refilled into capsules)

Planned to be at 0.0 mg lexapro by about October 2016.

I also take 50-100 mg modafinil per day, no short term plans of stopping/tapering modafinil but will re-evaluate after I'm off lexapro.

Unfortunately, I have been one too.  It was kind of depressing cleaning my apartment and seeing all the failures.

After I posted about my success with coq10 a year ago, it seemed to go south on me even at a much lower dose.   I think I have gotten to the point where I can't take much of anything.

Best of luck with it.

Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

BTDT, you can buy a home laser system in Toronto - http://www.bioflexlaser.com/products/bioflex-home-ii-system.php

I'm trying a Bioflex laser possibly next week from a Naturopath. I just saw her yesterday. I read "The Brain's Way of Healing" by Dr.Norman Doidge (also from T.O.). He talked about lasers and Frederick Kahn.

Sorry to hear you are still so tired. I'm actually hoping the laser therapy will help with my fatigue. I guess it didn't help you for that, but I'm glad it helped with the pain.

I wish you peace  and healing... healing mostly.  :)

On Effexor since February 2003; Mar/2012 - dropped from 150mg to 131mg; Apr/2012 - 112.5mg; Jul.2/2012 - 94mg;
Oct.21/2012 - 75mg - first started noticing withdrawal symptoms; Nov.16/2012 - 56mg; Dec.11/2012- 37.5mg; Jan.5/2013 - 19mg; Jan.22/2013 - 22.5mg (withdrawal too strong); Jan.23/2013 - 37.5mg (MUCH worse; very sick)
Jan.24/2013 - 30mg; May 26/2013 - 27mg (started 10% method - too much)

Dec.25/2013 - 27.3mg (no relief after 7 month hold; slow updose)

Mar.6/2014 - 37.5mg (3.5 year hold, no improvement);

Nov.2/2017 - 2.5% drop/36.6mg; Nov.30/2017 - 4% drop/35.1mg; Dec.28/2017 - 6% drop/33mg; Jan.25,/2018 - 8% drop/30.4mg; Feb.22/2018 - Held at 30.4mg; Mar. 22/2018 - 10% drop/27.4mg; Apr.19/2018 - 10% drop/24.7mg; May 17/2018 - 5%/23.5mg; Nov.21/2018 - 1.7% drop/23.1mg; Dec.19/2018 - 1.7%/22.7mg; Jan.23/2019 - 2.6%/22.1mg; Feb.27/2019 - 3.6% drop/21.3mg..holding...considering slow updose back to full dose

Here is the price:

"Thank you for interested in the Bioflex Home System.   We are offering special pricing  on this system for the month of March.  The regular price is $5500 plus HST, but with the special pricing until March 31st its $2999 plus HST.  Please let me know if you have any questions and I would happy to answer them for you."

My post effexor budget is no where near enough to afford it so I am off to find some supplements.

hydrosoluble CoQ10 (Q-Gel) contained in soft gels maybe some " L- Carnitine supposedly helps with chemical sensitivities"   I can't find the name of the one I thought I posted here L- carnitine and something else with it.. hm?

I think this may be it

The propionyl-L-carnitine/acetyl-L-carnitine combination is also used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Healthcare providers give propionyl-L-carnitine intravenously (by IV) for treating PVD and intermittent claudication; to improve wound healing in people with PVD; and to treatheart disease, including congestive heart failure, and chest pain (angina).

How does it work?

Propionyl-L-carnitine helps the body produce energy. It is important for heart function, muscle movement, and many other body processes. It also seems to help increase circulation.

Side effects

Propionyl-L-carnitine is safe for most people when taken by mouth or given intravenously by a healthcare professional. It can cause nausea, vomiting, stomachpain, weakness, and chest pain (angina). It can also cause a "fishy" odor of the urine, breath, and sweat.

Special Precautions & Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of propionyl-L-carnitine during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

“Underactive thyroid” (hypothyroidism): There is a concern that propionyl-L-carnitine might make hypothyroidism worse or thyroid hormone treatment less effective. This is because a related chemical, L-carnitine, seems to interfere with thyroid hormone. If you have hypothyroidism, don’t take propionyl-L-carnitine.

Seizures: Some people who have a history of seizures have reported an increase in the number and severity of seizures after taking L-carnitine by mouth or intravenously (by IV). There is a concern that this might also occur with propionyl-L-carnitine, because it is a similar chemical.

And just like that it is off my list... nope... will check for the Co Q10 that is it.  End of shopping list.. likely all I can afford anyway.

peace all

Effexor has made me poor as well. Do they mention that in the side effects? That machine is expensive. Interesting how they can offer it at almost half the price during the sale. CoQ10 didn't help me for my fatigue. Those other supplements you mention sound good and bad. I'm looking forward to working with the Naturopath. She is going to treat my bad shoulder with the laser too.

I wonder if there is anyway you could get financial assistance in buying the home laser? Probably not, but maybe there is something out there....

peace out

I'm taking CoQ10

I cannot say it makes me feel any different after 2 weeks.

(It isn't making me feel worse though!)

Cheers

Damien

  • Moderator Emeritus

When I was put on statins, over 10 years ago, my mood completely crashed, severe parasthesia down my left side, tingling & nerve effects.  BEFORE all the kerfuffle on Aussie TV about fats and statins and cholesterol numbers, I had decided to taper off statins.  It's the first taper I did.  (I went off the PPI's cold turkey - whups!).

One of my realizations, upon watching the ABC-Catalyst TV show (by Maryanne Demasi, since been banned, as it went against AMA and Heart Association Guidelines) was that I'd been robbed of CoQ10 for a decade.  In the past, I had taken 100mg CoQ10 when I "found it on special" just because I knew it helped with aging & oxidation.  On and off.  Sporadic.

When I saw the Catalyst show, I realized that the statins had been the straw that broke the camel's back - the deep, unrelenting suicidal hopeless depression.  I started the CoQ10 at higher doses:  600 mg.  I've been on this dose for nearly 2 years.  I can probably decrease my dose now, that the worst of the statin damage must surely be over by now.

Puritan's Pride http://www.puritan.com has my favorite 600 mg in softgel.  It's more expensive than NOW Foods, which has a cheaper version of 600 mg in softgel.  For those of you wanting to try less, Puritan's Pride has multiple strengths and sizes available.  The lowest is 100 mg - because it is in a softgel, it is more difficult to "tip out extra" to lower your dose.  But the quality is very good.

Consumer Labs indicates that DRUG INTERACTIONS should be noted for people on blood thinners (like Warfarin, etc.), diabetes drugs, blood pressure medicine (CoQ10 lowers blood pressure, which can crash if you are on blood pressure drugs).  It may REDUCE the efficacy of cancer radiation.

Consumer Labs also says that people on statins can increase their intake of the drug, to compensate for the damage from statins.

Some products contain POLYSORBATE 80, which many people are sensitive to.

Consumer Labs has listed as NOT APPROVED:  "Liquid Health Hydrosoluble CoQ10 Blueberry - 50 mg per teaspoon"  (was short on active ingredient), "Nutrition Now CoQ10 Gummies - 100 mg per Gummy" (only 61% of active ingredient found),

The three most affordable approved were: "Kirkland/Costco" (softgel),  "Doctor's Best" (powder in gelcap) and "Puritan's Pride" and "Nature's Bounty" (which is the same as Puritan's Pride - both softgels).  Trader Joe's (also softgels) was only a few cents / 100mg more, and also approved.

Hope this helps.

  • 2 months later...

I started taking CoQ10 about a week ago. The pills are 100 mg. ones. I've noticed some reduction in pain, as well as increased energy. However, they are also giving me some weird head sensations and today, my blood pressure was much higher than normal...I've also been ridiculously hungry. I bought some veggie capsules today, so I can divide them up into 25 mg. pills. Hopefully, this will help alleviate some of the less than desirable side effects. Even though I've woken up once or twice each night and felt a bit activated, the quality of my sleep has changed. For one thing, I'm dreaming again for the first time in over a year..or at least, remembering some of my dreams now. If this turns out to be a helpful supplement over the long haul, I'll look into finding some liquid.

Remeron for depression. Started at 7.5 mg. in 2005. Gradual increases over 8 years, up to 45 mg. in 2012.Began tapering in June 2013. Went from 45 to 30 mg in the first 3-4 months. Held for a couple of months.Started tapering by 3.75 mg every month or 2, with some longer holding periods. Eventually went down to 3.75 mg. about April 2014. Stopped taking Remeron August 2014. Developed issues with histamine a week after stopping--symptoms reduced through diet and a few supplements. Currently having issues with a few foods. Most of the histamine intolerance has resolved or is at least, in remission.

Current Medications:

Current Supplements: Cannabis (CBD and THC), Vitamin C, D, Quercetin, CoQ10, Tart Cherry, Probiotic, Phytoplankton oil, magnesium, Methyl B. What has helped me most: spending time in nature, qi gong, exercise, healthy diet, meditation, IV vitamins, homeopathy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, music, and cuddling my cats..

The problem with all these supplement brands is that it's so difficult to choose a specific brand.  On amazon.com there's no less than 10 different CoQ10 brands available, all with like 4 or 4.5 star ratings.  How on Earth is a customer supposed to know which is the best one?

I appreciate Jan Carrol's post where these 3 were "approved":  And I quoth  "The three most affordable approved were: "Kirkland/Costco" (softgel),  "Doctor's Best" (powder in gelcap) and "Puritan's Pride" and "Nature's Bounty" (which is the same as Puritan's Pride - both softgels).  Trader Joe's (also softgels) was only a few cents / 100mg more, and also approved."

Aside from that post would any other members here be willing to share the brand that they are taking?

Thank you.

This will probably only be helpful for people living in Canada, but this is the one I'm taking: http://www.aor.ca/products-page/products-list/_co-enzyme-q10/#label_tabWe aren't able to buy supplements from the US and have them shipped up here...also, I am limited to veggie capsules as I can't handle gelatin ones. Maybe it's good in some ways to have fewer choices.

I read last night that this supplement can lower blood sugar...which is not a good thing for me. I'm already having more low blood sugar episodes. It's something I'll have to monitor closely. Also, most things that are supposed to balance or lower blood sugar have a paradoxical effect with me. These are supposed to lower blood pressure too...not sure if yesterday's high reading is due to the Coq10 or not. The paradoxical effects of things are not new to me from WD...this has often been the case throughout my life.
