New York Times resident psychiatry writer, an MD, tosses coin to choose meds

I couldn't believe my eyes. This guy says he tosses a coin to choose a med. And his writing has a home at the NY Times...an M.D.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/08/to-treat-depression-drugs-or-therapy/?smid=tw-share

2009: Cancer hospital said I had adjustment disorder because I thought they were doing it wrong. Their headshrinker prescribed Effexor, and my life set on a new course. I didn't know what was ahead, like a passenger on Disneyland's Matterhorn, smiling and waving as it climbs...clink, clink, clink.

2010: Post surgical accidental Effexor discontinuation by nurses, masked by intravenous Dilaudid. (The car is balanced at the top of the track.) I get home, pop a Vicodin, and ...

Whooosh...down, down, down, down, down...goes the trajectory of my life, up goes my mood and tendency to think everything is a good idea.
2012: After the bipolar jig was up, now a walking bag of unrelated symptoms, I went crazy on Daytrana (the Ritalin skin patch by Noven), because ADHD was a perfect fit for a bag of unrelated symptoms. I was prescribed Effexor for the nervousness of it, and things got neurological. An EEG showed enough activity to warrant an epilepsy diagnosis rather than non-epileptic ("psychogenic") seizures.

:o 2013-2014: Quit everything and got worse. I probably went through DAWS: dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome. I drank to not feel, but I felt a lot: dread, fear, regret, grief: an utter sense of total loss of everything worth breathing about, for almost two years.

I was not suicidal but I wanted to be dead, at least dead to the experience of my own brain and body.

2015: I  began to recover after adding virgin coconut oil and organic grass-fed fed butter to a cup of instant coffee in the morning.

I did it hoping for mental acuity and better memory. After ten days of that, I was much better, mood-wise. Approximately neutral.

And, I experienced drowsiness. I could sleep. Not exactly happy, I did 30 days on Wellbutrin, because it had done me no harm in the past.

I don't have the DAWS mood or state of mind. It never feel like doing anything if it means standing up.

In fact, I don't especially like moving. I'm a brain with a beanbag body.

Read it again WC, that is not what he said:

"In fact, I used to delight in tormenting the drug company representatives when they asked me how I picked an antidepressant. I would take a quarter out of my pocket, flip the coin and say I’d let chance decide because their drug was no better or worse than their competitors’.

Is not the same thing as what you are saying.

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

I assumed that if he told drug reps he chose meds by a coin toss, even if he was just trying to make a point, he was doing something similar in his practice. I see his point if he meant that the drugs are equally ineffective or ill-advised. I wonder why he prescribes them at all. Or if he does. It's actually an uplifting article in that it questions the use of medications when cognitive behavioral therapy works better for some patients. The coin-toss comment just creeped me out, given what patients endure when meds are carelessly prescribed.

For a moment I was tempted to edit the title but I figured better to let it stand as kind of an example of how you can read stuff and get a 'not quite right' interpretation and go off all half cocked. Lord knows I am guilty of that sometimes. Besides, even my interpret may have been off too.

I don't mind changing the title...the same article could arguably be used as good news in that it presents research about people benefiting from non-drug interventions. Or we could delete the whole thread! I'm not proud :)

I think you are more right than I am. But can you imagine the uproar if an oncologist said something like that?

I find it interesting that he would make the comment it starts a thought process that is worth having... as for cbt... I recall my response to it years ago back in therapy after quitting paxil...

While I am sure it would make some sense for people who have non drug related mental health issue it was impossible for me to implement I recall saying to the person trying to teach it...

"if I could do all those thought processes I would not need to be here at all"

For me CBT was some frosting to put on the cake after the cake was a solid entity... after your brain is working then maybe it could be used... but for myself personally in what I know understand to be a ct from paxil my brain did not work."  Sadly I was lead to believe it was not working because of a mental health issue... unforgivable further damage was done by that failure. imho....

This is what we risk when we hand ourselves over to other to fix when we are damaged by a drug... this is what we risk by trusting our doctors with our health ...this is what we risk by drug companies keeping their data secret ... as they knew all about withdrawal then when I needed the information they withheld it.

That hurt me... a doctor who is willing to say this publicly is in my opinion a breath of fresh air. Not the whole ball of wax but a drop of wax that need to melt and fall.  It is a slight start each drop counts.

end rant

peace all

Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Very good point, it brings up the lack of "science" or "lack of true reliable science" regarding psych drugs.

Unless you are asking me formally to remove or change it I am letting it stand for the reason I gave above. Unless Alto says to do something, of course. It will be interesting seeing the comments, it is a good article. Click bait is click bait, no matter how it reads.

click bait...

new term to me...

something to get people clicking on a topic?

Like news papers and songs marketers lobbyists banks politicians and corporations do?

haha cool we are evolving to be the same but we are aware we are the same and just like them using it for a purpose our own purpose. that too is interesting perhaps I am easily entertained... likely

Guardian.com was responsible the 'click bait' that lead to the creation of a certain post in Off Topic about a soon to be hot selling item on Ebay :)

Hey, I'm not proud. If it looks interesting and probably does not lead to a malicious site, I'll bite.

Compsports, that's a great article. I had no idea the finding Freidman cited had been retracted. The carelessness in his thinking is even more evident now.

I was not suicidal but I wanted to be dead, at least dead to the experience of my own brain and body.

I did it hoping for mental acuity and better memory. After ten days of that, I was much better, mood-wise. Approximately neutral.

Thanks Westcoast, it is also pretty disgusting that the NY Times doesn't even do any fact checking of his sources.    But unfortunately, that is the state of journalism these days, parroting old recycled information.

Plus, if the doctor actually told the patient "I have no idea what any of these drugs might do to or for you, let's flip a coin" that would be one thing. But it's not usually presented that way.

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

56 years old

While I can't get my head around the all the bits of his post today I do recall the big picture and see it all the time when I am trying learn something contradictory study results are a constant pain my butt on many things I would like to know a little about in helping those I love or my own self.

I think this pays homage to where he is coming from

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/martha-rosenberg/retracted-research_b_1497821.html

These Researchers Went to Prison But Their Work Has Not Been Retracted

teasers quotes:

," falsified research stands un-retracted -- including the work of authors who actually went to prison for fraud."

" In fact, it is cited in 173 works and medical textbooks, misleading future medical professionals. (4)"

What kind of health care can we expect to get based on this and why are we paying for it... makes me crazy so I will stop for now.

They seem to be able to keep going long after they screw up go to jail ect... they keep getting work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_K._Goodwin

not to pick on him I am sure there are others this is what wiki has to say.

"Goodwin was one of only five psychiatrists on the Current Contents list of the most frequently cited scientists in the world and one of 12 listed in The Best Doctors in the U.S.[11]

"He held a Presidential appointment as head of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration,[6] from which he resigned following controversy over his "Violence Initiative" and his comments about inner-city youth. However, following his resignation, he was appointed by President Bush to head of NIMH, from 1992 until resigning in 1994."

I know I am not of posh enough mind to understand this sort of thing... where I come from you screw up at work and it can take you a lifetime to get back you reputation but such are the ways of the lower class.

Maybe there is a good reason for what seems to be more contradiction.. you decide... it is beyond me.
