Video about depression and the brain.

Hi,

I thought that you might find this interesting.  I do see it is "produced with support from Janssen Research and Development LLC.  I do hope that this is a good thing - research to find out how depression happens and how drugs affect a person.

Sadly the video is a promotional one from a pharmaceutical company and is promoting the biological depression theory. I can imagine there will be many people queueing up for ketamine which is a highly addictive drug and keeps some illegal drug dealers in a very lavish lifestyle, and the legal ones too. :(

They talk about how drugs allow neuroplasticity, but the brain is capeable of that all by itself. There is no scientific evidence to support that theory.

Depression is a symptom and has many causes. Treat the cause and cure the depression, whether it is food, stress or related to another physical illness. It is real, very real and debilitating but the drugs that every one of us here have taken can lead to a more miserable existence in the long run, and if the source of depression is not addressed they are not 'curing' that depression.

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Different drugs occasionally (mostly benzos) 1976 - 1981 (no problem)

1993 - 2002 in and out of hospital. every type of drug + ECT. Staring with seroxat

2002  effexor.

Tapered  March 2012 to March 2013, ending with 5 beads.

Withdrawal April 2013 . Reinstated 5 beads reduced to 4 beads May 2013

Restarted taper  Nov 2013

OFF EFFEXOR Feb 2015    :D

Tapered atenolol and omeprazole Dec 2013 - May 2014

Tapering tramadol, Feb 2015 100mg , March 2015 50mg

 July 2017 30mg.  May 15 2018 25mg

Taking fish oil, magnesium, B12, folic acid, bilberry eyebright for eye pressure.

My story http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4199-hello-mammap-checking-in/page-33

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

I didn't watch the whole thing, because they went straight into the medicalization of "depression" and emotion, which I think is a faulty paradigm to begin with (read Anatomy of an Epidemic by Robert Whitaker, if you want to know more about the history of how feelings became di$eases).

And then they started talking about "brain circuits" (a pseudoscientific term, there is no such thing) being "dysregulated" (which sounds an awful lot like the drug-company-invented but completely-unsupported-by-science "chemical imbalance" paradigm).

So basically, this is another video by a drug company, trying to convince us that our brains are simplistic and faulty machines that just somehow break down randomly, poor things; that our emotions are diseases (rather than complex but normal reactions to very complex and unnatural life conditions in the modern world); and that the drug companies are so much smarter than four billion years of evolution, that they have invented wonderful petroleum-derivative chemicals that are just what our poor little sick weak faulty brains need to fix them.

Since I followed this kind of thinking for about 18 years, believing it hook line and sinker, and it ruined my life and did terrible things to my children's lives as well, I am not inclined to cheer about another Wonderful New $avior Drug today. Woo. Hoo.

Oh, and one more thing: We never (almost never? Never, that I have seen) get people in here with new-onset "depression" (I use scare quotes around "depression" because I am skeptical that it's a simple disease-like syndrome; I think emotions are much more complex than that).

What we see here are people dealing with iatrogenic nervous system damage due to psychiatric drug use. That damage causes symptoms that are often "diagnosed" as "depression."  But it's not the same thing as the kind of depression that comes from life experiences, stressors, etc. without the use of psych drugs.

So I think if we're going to talk about "depression" here, we need to clarify what we're even talking about. And this little advertisement video not only doesn't do that, it just reinforces the pseudo$cience that drug companies have already done a really good job of putting out there--by making videos like this, for one thing.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Feb 15 2010:  300 mg Neurontin  200 Lamictal   10 Celexa      0.65 Xanax   and 5 mg Ambien

Feb 10 2014:   62 Lamictal    1.1 Celexa         0.135 Xanax    1.8 Valium

Feb 10 2015:   50 Lamictal      0.875 Celexa    0.11 Xanax      1.5 Valium

Feb 15 2016:   47.5 Lamictal   0.75 Celexa      0.0875 Xanax    1.42 Valium

2/12/20             12                       0.045               0.007                   1

May 2021            7                       0.01                  0.0037                1

Feb 2022            6                      0!!!                     0.00167               0.98                2.5 mg Ambien

Oct 2022       4.5 mg Lamictal    (off Celexa, off Xanax)   0.95 Valium    Ambien, 1/4 to 1/2 of a 5 mg tablet

I'm not a doctor. Any advice I give is just my civilian opinion.

Well, I listened to the whole thing while busily searching in another window for who was behind this slick presentation. Ah, here it is, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, who makes us so many cute bandaids....

"Janssen Research & Development is leveraging a combination of internal and external innovation to discover and develop novel medicines and solutions in five distinct therapeutic areas: Neuroscience, Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases and Vaccines, and Cardiovascular and Metabolism. (so they can start rolling in $$ dough)

I don't like it based on my objection to pushing meds for depression, which just doesn't work in the long run.

"Hippocampal plasticity"? "Activation of neurotrophin [sic] expression"? All delivered in a posh British accent (no offense mammaP.) Too much pseudo scientific sounding jargon to bedazzle the listener into thinking this stuff has all been carefully researched and is PROVEN. I don't think so, listen to it carefully.

Very, very slick presentation. I hope they test Special K on themselves first.....

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

I was skeptical also.......and found this statement by the publisher of the journal nature (its a biggie in scientific circles)

"Nature has full responsibility for all editorial content, including Nature Video content. This content is editorially independent of sponsors."

It did seem like some sort of ad....and yes I did find myself wondering if they were trying to promote the use of ketamine.

According to my research the actual term "chemical imbalance" came from a marketing firm... no scientist was responsible for the term.

Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

The only time I heard the word ketamine was from a pimp in the strip bar who was trying to get me to go to an out of town party "ketamine" was offered as a way to convince me to go... I did not know what it was ... he said you know "Special K"  I told him I was not a drug users and did not know the terms...lol most who are in the business know all about drugs and since i was older and there everyone assumed all kinds of things of me that would not have been thought of a young dancer... they thought I already knew everything or I would not be there...

little did they know I knew nothing... not one thing

I got a lot of respect because a woman my age dancing usually had a lot of backing from high up... it was all a fluke I was flying by the seat of my pants every day for years with no back up at all... but they could not take the chance... life is stranger than fiction it really is.

The only time I heard of ketamine is in the murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahophy... you know the Paul Bernardo murders his wife and him used it on her sister to have sex with her while she was unconscious ... she choke on her vomit an died.

Perhaps most infamously, Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo — Canada's Ken and ...Another is Ketamine, an animal tranquilizer known as "jet" or "special K,"  .

why anyone would go to a party because they had that drug is beyond me...

how it would help heal a brain of depression is also beyond me.

Stranger than fiction these pharma folks

Ya when I go I go big...isn't that what they say go big or stay home I wish I had stayed home was always a home body.  I have seen things I wish I did not see I have done things I wish I had not done... I have learned things... that I am determine to use in my future as it life experience should not be a total loss.  I now see life a l ot differently than I use to having seen how the other half lives... both sides the seedy side is shown in the strip life but the very rich are known to partake of such places too.  Stories I could tell.. some visitors from your country too.  Stories better left untold I would add.

peace
