  1. Hi! I'm excited to find this community! I am female, 51 years old and have been on 10 mg of Lexapro for a year and a half. I went through an emotional/stressful divorce and hesitantly went on the drug with the idea I would quit as soon as I could. I am now 17 pounds heavier which is a bummer for any woman, but especially for me as I am in the wellness industry and it is beginning to affect my work and professional image. My tummy is huge --a common issue with Lexapro evidently. YUck... I have toyed with tapering but evidently in too large of increments and always feel the res
  2. Hi everyone. I'm here hoping to get some feedback about the various symptoms I've been having since coming off of Lexapro. First, I believe my taper was too fast after having been on the drug for about 7 years. I am very sensitive to medications and often need a smaller dose than what would be effective for the average person. Before I was even finished the taper off of Lexapro, I started experiencing dizziness or vertigo. It was the type of dizziness where I felt like I was weak, lightheaded, or about to pass out. It was more of a field of vision thing, with my eyes moving on their ow
  3. I am looking for some advice or reassurance. ---For 8 years, I was on Lexapro (most of the time at 10mg and 15 mg for last year). I tried many times to taper off of it but the anxiety was too crushing and I never got far. --However, in Dec 2013 I was prescribed a remedy by a homeopath that completely wiped out the anxiety. As soon as the feelings of generalized anxiety (heart, palpitations, knot in stomach) were gone, the Lexapro felt completely too stimulating to take and I literally gained 12 lbs in a week. (My weight has been stable for over 15 years.) --So, I began to taper in
  4. I'm a husband posting on behalf of my wife: My wife was on Lexapro (5mg) for 4 years. She cut back to 2.5mg a couple of years ago, then dropped to 1.25mg, then to 0.625mg over a 2- month period before stopping altogether after a dose on April 29 , 2014. Withdrawal began within 6 days of the final dose, mostly physical in nature, but some anxiety. Six tough weeks passed and some of the symptoms went away, but then she had a week with heavy "brain fog", was too weak to hardly stand up, and was very dizzy. She kind of panicked, thinking it was about to get really bad, and took a 0.2mg. do
  5. Hello there. I'm going through a horrendous time trying to come off Lexapro and would like some advice, and this is my story - sorry if its a bit long. In April 2013 I took some recreational drugs and had a severe panic attack the following day. I was abroad so this made things even scarier. Thought I was dying, rang an ambulance and went to hospital. Ended up staying the night. In my heightened state of panic that night I convinced myself I was dying of cancer. Had several more panic attacks the following few days. Struggled with crippling anxiety and panic attacks for 2 months afterwards. Co
  6. I’ve tried writing this introduction more than once and I have to say that it’s kind of difficult to summarize almost twenty years of wrestling with these dang meds. Around 1995, my second marriage was falling apart. I hated myself and I was falling apart. The marriage counselor my (ex-)wife and I were seeing recommended a doc who could prescribe something for me. In tears, I practically begged that doctor to give me antidepressants. To his credit, he was reluctant but he did end up giving me handfuls of free samples of a relatively young drug called Paxil. At that time, I had never had a p
  7. Thirteen years ago I was put on lexapro. I was drinking and doing drugs, young and very unhappy. The idea of being on an antidepressant was exhilarating because I had been unhappy for a long time and wanted to feel better, I just didn't want to stop pounding booze and taking hard drugs. I stayed on lexapro for a long time, I have been on Prozac, welbutrin, and a couple others. I can't remember all the names of them anymore. There was a time when I prided myself on all of the different drugs I had tried. I was proud of how broken I was. Six years ago I got clean. I drove my tru
  8. I started tapering off my Lexapro (20 mgs) in mid-December. About halfway through my tapering off from Lexapro a few weeks ago, I noticed that I was getting *very* angry within a few hours of taking it. I suppose I am an angry person by nature and having 5 y.o. twins with a mostly absent father isn't helping things. But I noticed that when I didn't take the Lexapro, I was more easily able to control my temper. As I said, I have young twins, so I had to stop the taper halfway through my plan and go cold turkey off the Lexapro because things were getting too intense with the kids. I've b
  9. Hi I'm Lauren, I'm 24, and have been on and off meds since I was 18. I was put on 5mg of lexapro at 18, with strattera 70mg for ADD. I was on both for about 2 years, strattera did nothing for me. And I tapered off lexapro slowly after two years with no problems except brain zaps for a few weeks. Depression never came back. I had a baby when I was 21, and came down with post partum depression and was put on Wellbutrin for 2 months. It made me feel crazy, very up and down and much more depressed so I tapered off quite fast, and was fine afterwards. Suffered no real withdrawal. I was th
  10. Hi Everyone, So where to start? Guess this forces another time to think back when a fatal turn of my life started. Unlike most of us here, I started the 2 week sample supply of Lexapro pill in 2009 for a severe headache based on recommendation of a friend who has been taking SSRI for years. So I didn't go through any information of side effect or how to take the drugs etc., information you would otherwise get from a pharmacist or dedication insert. Somehow it stopped my headache 2 weeks on 10 mg of lex. I don't remember why I restarted it after the initial doses, but do know it’s not for a
  11. Hello! I am so glad to have found this site and even just to read a post by another member who was in hell at the 5 day post withdrawal of Lexapro. (Where I am now). After a real meltdown yesterday I am seeing my Dr this afternoon but had some questions I was hoping someone could help with, based on their experience? I started Lexapro for post natal anxiety 3 years ago. After a year on and feeling wonderful I slowly tapered off and did fine. I recall some mild brain zaps and tears each time I stepped down the dose but nothing that did not pass within 72 hrs. I was on a 10mg dose but do not
  12. I had been treated with a low dose of generic Prozac for 12 years, including during two pregnancies. It seemed to stop being effective in late 2012. Over the last year, I have had a bunch of new drugs thrown my way by an unscrupulous doctor and not really been happy with any of them. The doctor I was seeing just kept raising the doses until I became suicidal. I changed doctors and the new one put me on a low dose of Lexapro which seemed fine until I started gaining a lot of weight really fast. I decided that I was going to go off the Lexapro and see if I could just clear my system a
  13. Hello anyone here, first of all please excuse my english and thanks for letting me ask here for some mental support! I'm a 40 year old woman from Germany, where is unfortunatedly nearly no professionally qualified and/or medical help and knowledge about tapering of and really getting off antidepressants - anyway I can't even find it. My medical history and my problem now: Cause of a "anxiety disorder" in the past I got several antidepressants (although they didn't even help me with my problem - and unfortunately whether I not my docs really know or tell me about the crass impact to my
  14. I am new to this forum but not new to depression or antidepressants. Spent 2 months tapering off Lexapro. Finished last October. Have been struggling with terrible irritability, low mood and occasional intense suicidal urges. I am at a loss as to how to muddle thru this time period and feel hopeless about it getting better. My doc never even scheduled any type of followup visit once he gave me the tapering instructions. And I had no idea of the hell I was going to fall into. I am concerned about long term use of Lexapro so I am determined to keep trying life without it. I just hope I can. :/
  15. I started taking Lexapro about a year and a half ago. It helped with both depression and anxiety, but the side effects were too much to handle. I had no sex drive and this caused problems in my marriage. I was also sleepy all the time and could not stay awake for nothing. So I decided it was time to come off. Right now it seems like the worst decisions of my life. I have tried tapering very slowly, but if I do not take one pill each morning I have extremely bad consequences. I get so dizzy I can't make quick motions. I have brain shivers and brain zaps where it feels like I'm getting smacked
  16. Hi! I stumbled across this site a while ago and it planted the seed to try to ween off of antidepressants altogether. I'm finally doing it and registered here today. I've been on some sort of antidepressant for years now. After suffering frequent, severe panic attacks for years and just trying to deal with it, I finally had a doctor prescribe Lexapro because of prolonged, severe insomnia. Not only did the insomnia clear up, but I stopped having panic attacks! I had been having several a day, every day for years. It was horrible. After a year or so, I changed jobs and my new insurance d
  17. Hello, I'm new to the forum. I've been having a lot of trouble with sleep. This started 2 years ago (Nov. 2011) after my father passed away. I started waking up panicking every time I would start to fall asleep. I was put on 20 mg of Lexapro and 5 mg of Zyprexa. Everything stabilized and was good for 2 months until I developed a rash on my legs. I was told to stop taking the Lexapro immediately. I stayed of of it for 1 1/2 months and wasn't taking any medications. Then I started having fever like symptoms, extreme anxiety and just felt horrible. A psychiatrist introduced Zoloft to me at 50
  18. Hello, This is Blueflower. I am not sure where to go from here. After the birth of my daughter, I noticed weird mood symptoms during the pregnancy like waking up every night at 3 am and seeing ghosts and feeling terror. I would eat something and fall back asleep. After her birth something was completely off in the hospital. I felt empty and completely terrified. I was trying to breast feed her on demand and this some how ended up in me staying awake for a week straight. I had the inability to sleep at all. I would pass out and then an electric shock from my spinal cord would zap me awa
  19. Moderator note - link to Fonz's benzo forum thread - Fonz: Protracted Withdrawal, anyone ? hi, I'm new to this forum but have put my time in on other forums. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with becoming sick before your SSRI dose? Within a couple hours of the dose it seems to clear up a lot. I'm also wondering if anyone has ever became sick from taking a dose ? Like you feel alright but after taking the SSRI you become sick. History: I have been on SSRI's for 10 years. 18 days ago I finished my 12 mo
  20. Hi, I'm scared because I've been feeling bad ever since I got off of lexapro in December 2012. I had been taking it for 2 or 3 years. I had to stop because it was making me sleepy all the time towards the end. I tapered off, but did it over a few weeks. I started to get all kinds of symptoms-hot flashes and chills, brain wooshing, sweating, insomnia, dizziness, irritability, digestive problems. My period even stopped for three months. This went on for 5 months and then I started to feel better, but I felt drained and lacked energy. In the last few weeks, the hot flashes, sweating and insom
  21. Hi everyone. Just a quick note to say this website is amazing! It's great to have such support out there. Ok so I've had depression for a year now and have been on Lexapro for that amount of time. I've recently decided to go cold turkey completely off it as I don't like the side effects I get from it. I also don't have the patience to wean off it. My questions are 1) Have any members gone cold turkey off lexapro, and 2) After how many days did you start to feel the effects of the withdrawal? Thanks very much for any replies, everythinglive.
  22. Wondering if anyone has had problems with switching to liquid lexapro. i have been tapering off 5mg of lexapro (after 7 yrs at 10 mg i stopped too quickly 2 yrs ago and got very sick). over the past year i have gone from 5mg tablet to 1/4 tablet (1.25 mg) and now trying to use liquid. feeling more muscle tension, jaw clenching, carpal tunnel. i also am still dealing with gut issue. been tested for everything and all is good but 2-3 hrs after a bowel movement i can have dizziness, nausea, reflux, anxiety and increased hot flashes. days that i am constipated i have very low symptoms. tried
  23. LINK bubble-life-without-xanax-after-14-years Hello everybody, I found this site through google search after I entered 'escitalopram withdrawal' and I liked what I found here so much that I decided to create an account. What you are saying is very close to my experience compared to what doctors are saying which could basically be summed up as: you see you can't do without anti-depressants. I was in a rush so didn't write down my whole history with anti-depressants but mosty focussed on my current problem. To sum up I have been almost continuously
  24. Well where do I start. ..A brief history I suppose. I am a 31 year old mother of two beautiful girls. I was first put on ADs as an 18 year old when I went into a random GP claiming to be a bit down. She prescribed me Effexor XR im unsure of the dose. After a year on these meds I started questioning how they had changed me and going through a tough time with a boyfriend, began having suicidal thoughts. Completely out of the blue. Upon mentioning this to my sister she suggested I stop taking them and on the advice of another doc I went cold turkey with the help of perscribed valium. This
  25. Hello, I came across this site and im hoping I can just vent to you guys and get to know some people who may be going through something similar to what I am going through. So, a little about my situation: I'm 23 years old, I was in an abusive relationship for two years, in this relationship I was physically abused, sexually abused but most importantly, I was psychologically and emotionally abused. I FINALLy grew the courage to leave. I was in therapy after that to deal with the aftershock of everything that happened to me. One day I went to my family doctor and told him about wh
