  1. Hello, I have long wondered about longterm effects of my antidepressants. Over the past 11 years, I’ve attempted to wean off several times but it wasn’t worth it. My primary care physician assured me that since the positive effect was almost immediate when I’d return to my regular dose, it was quite clear I had a serotonin deficiency and that I’d found my miracle drug. I trusted him! With my health. With my life! Every thing I tried before starting lexapro was futile, the immediate relief and ability to parent well, keep my life in balance etc came once on antidepressants. I think I was origin
  2. Hi my name is Heather. I have been on some form of antidepressants/anxiety medication for the last 15 years. Zoloft, Celexa, Effexor, Pristique, Xanax, Buspar, Lexapro and probably others I can’t remember; all ranging from 10mg-150mg. I am successfully down to just 20mg of Lexapro once a day, now that I am in a better place in my life. I tried to quit cold turkey once and was so dizzy I could not drive and the brain zaps were horrible. My psychiatrist is on board with me splitting my 20mg of Lexapro in half to start tapering, but I am super nervous. Any advice, support, or personal stories sim
  3. Has anybody used TMS to come off SSRI? I did and did not get any withdrawal symptoms while being treated with TMS. I'm in the taper phase of TMS and my last dose of Lexapro was on 5/27. I was using Lexapro for many years and decided it was time to let go. Since coming off TMS my symptoms have elevated some. Not feeling myself and moody. Does anyone else have experience with this. Thanks
  4. Hello and my sincere thanks to all who have made this source of information and support. I have joined to seek advice (and hopefully to give it where I can) about my current situation. I will timeline my story to begin with to establish some context; 2006-2008 Citalopram (30mg) for PTSD 2009-2017 Perfectly fine!! "Maintenance dose" of Citalopram (20mg) - doc's orders 2017 Jun - Got worried about long term use - doc tapers me off Citalopram in 2 weeks... YES... 2 weeks Aug - Relapse and back onto 30mg Citalopram 2018 Aug
  5. Hi, I will try to keep it brief, but I am in desperate need of advice. I am a 34YO Male, my 1st bout of anxiety happened 10 years ago when I experienced a very stressful time in my life. I had my 1st child, started MBA school, and opened my own business all within a 3 month span. Had a panic attack one night, and what followed was a year of high general anxiety, with some intrusive OCDish thoughts sprinkled in. After a year I decided I would give meds a try. Tried Buspar...did nothing except make me dizzy. Tried Zoloft, and this was the magic bullet for me. Felt my anxiety lesson (
  6. Hi All, I am new here, and I hope that the collective experience across the forum is helpful for my situation. I am currently 27 years old and have been on medication since I was 18 years old for depression, OCD, and IBS-Constipation (directly tied to when I feel more depressed). I have mostly been on SSRIs, which have been helpful with depression, OCD, and regulating my peristalsis.. Medication summary below: 2009-2012: Celexa (up to 40 mg) 2012-2013- Lexapro / Abilify 2014 - Clomipramine. Clomipramine + Abilify. Result: Realized higher doses of c
  7. Hello Everyone, I am so grateful I found this SA forum. I am tapering liquid Lexapro, after 6 years struggling with it without adequate doctor's advice. (Did CT and restarted and so on). I found out that the drops coming from the bottle are not measuring each the same amount. Bottle says, one drop is one mgr. It is not. Bottle contains 15 ml, equivalent to 20 mgrs Lexapro. This is the Lundbeck Lexapro available here in Holland. I bought the medicine scale, I've been reading about here, and began to weigh the drops. It's terrifying. None of them measures the same weight. Now I know for s

Hi, I've been on 20mg Lexapro almost 20 years. I've tried 4 times to taper off, but I was cutting the dose 50% at a time; waiting weeks or as much as 9 months and then cutting another 50%. As soon as I got off, I would wind up totally unable to sleep and in fight or flight 24/7. From the information on this website, it looks like the tapering was far too rapid. I have managed to get off Klonopin and Trazadone in the past by pill-cutting without too much trouble. The last time I tried quitting Lexapro was a year ago with the help (and many, many supplements) from a naturopath, but
  9. Hi, everyone, I just joined today, after lurking for the last week. I am coming off a 9-month course of 5mg escitalopram tablets. I probably would have stayed on this medication because I felt it was helping me to cope, but blood work showed slight hypothyroidism and slightly high cholesterol (quite shocking as these #s have been great for many years, since I am a vegan health nut for decades). Also, I experienced constant exhaustion/lack of energy while on this medication - overwhelming and intractable, and often depressing. But the blood results are what made me decid
  10. supahset-i-can-finally-say-ive-made-it I went to the doctor for chest discomfort. I got a chest X-Ray, blood work, and an EKG and everything came back fine. My doctor thought it could be anxiety related. So she prescribed me Lexapro, 10m daily. I took this everyday for about 3 weeks, and tried to keep an open mind, but the drug wasn't doing anything for me, felt no different other than some side effects. I noticed weight gain an irritability. I decided this wasn't for me. When my doctor prescribed this to me, she did so with no hesitation, no warnings of side effects from takin
  11. I am new here and not sure I’m doing this right. I have been on Lexapro for 10 years. I stopped taking for 5 days in January due to illness then went back on. I’ve been having bad symptoms since then. It’s like how I felt before I started taking the drug. Horrible anxiety/panic attacks, exhaustion, stomach problems, etc. I feel like I’m going to lose it. I want to taper off to see if I can get better. It seems like the drug doesn’t work anymore and is actually working against me. I am on 10mgs.

My journey to be off psych drugs

I always took my medication without thinking really. I had a psychotic episode (due to insomnia, stress, and anxiety most likely) after Christmas in 2007. I was 13. I had been taking Lexapro for a few months. My M.D. prescribed it for me. I don't quite remember why. I think I might probably have been depressed and anxious. I only now realize that taking the Lexapro could very well have caused the insomnia and resultant delusions. Anyway, I had a breakdown. I was seen by a psych. She (Dr. S.) prescribed Lamotrigine. It seemed to quell the delusions. I was back at school, medicated a
  13. Hi All, I've been reading this forum for a while and the topics here have been indispensable, especially regarding dealing with withdrawal symptoms as I prepare myself for a slow taper off of my remaining dose. Pre-backstory I’m in my early 20s and I just graduated college in late 2014 with a high GPA and a degree in Computer Science. I’ve got a strong resume with projects under my belt. I should be starting my career right now but can’t due to antidepressant withdrawal, but I keep telling myself that I will get better and it will happen, I just need some more time to heal mentally
  14. Hi all, I did my best to read the guildelines but please let me know if I need to change something. My teen daughter was on 10 mg of Lexapro for two years, beginning Feb 10, 2017 and took her last dose on March 12, 2019. She had been severely depressed which turned out to be caused by Lyme Disease. The AD made her ill the very first time she took it: dry heaves, tingling arms, dizziness. But shortly thereafter her depression lifted and she seemed more like herself again. After one year of taking it, her hair began shedding in clumps. She began having wave
  15. Hello, I am looking for some guidance on beginning a taper from Lexapro 20 mg. I have been on a nightmarish roller coaster for the last 7 months, and I'm so glad that I found this forum which has finally given me the answers I've been looking for. Here is my history: I was prescribed Paxil 10 mg back in 2004 by my GP to address social anxiety issues. I'm an anxious person by nature, but I can see now with 20/20 hindsight that my nervous tendencies were nothing that should have ever been blunted by medicine. But nevertheless, I started taking it and it became my crutch. I considered try
  16. hey, i have been experiencing some really bad distress lately. i was put on lexapro 10mg in april 2017 for depression at 18 years old. after one month i experienced the all familiar sexual dysfunction, but since it seemed to give me some relief, i continued to take it, as this was also a stressfull part of my life, with exams during my final school year. after 6-7 months on lexapro i decided i have had enough and quit the medication cold turkey. my immediate withdrawals werent so bad. i felt a sense of light headedness during the day which only lasted about 2 seconds each time, paired with res
  17. Hi there? I've been on lexapro 5 weeks. I started at 1mg and now I'm on 15mg for 5 days. The side effects are horrendous and i think i want to taper off..how long should i take? I will see a doc tomorrow too.. this is a nightmare. i feel so sick. This isnt right. and pins and needles, my head feels so gross. I cant sleep. I feel poisoned.. is it safe to just go back to 10mg? 18. Hello everyone. I took Lexapro 5 mg for half a year against panic attacks. It did help and i do not have those anymore, but i feel worse then before since getting off this medication. My main issue are visual disturbances. I did already start noticing difficulties to see in the dark during those 6 months, but I always thought that side effect will go away once i get off the drug. Also, i had severe side effects when starting the drug with a starting dose of the already high 5 mg: severe depersonalisation for a week and severe sleep disturbances, i always woke up after 1 hour o
  19. Hi all. I've been tapering off escitalopram/lexapro for the last six weeks, gradually reducing the dose every two weeks. I'm down from 20mg to 12.5mg and not going any further for now. the last two weeks I've been feeling a few old symptoms creeping back - vivid dreams, reduced concentration, low energy and unhelpful thought patterns. My doctor's great and has advised me to slow down, which I'm doing. Anyone else been in a similar place? Pep talks and cheer leading is all very welcome!
  20. Hi all, I started tapering about 6-7 weeks ago. My titration schedule was as follows: 1. Alternate 10 and 7.5 for 23 days 2. 7.5 mg for 23 days 3. Alternate 7.5 and 5mg for 45 days I made it to step 3 above and major withdrawal symptoms started when I was within 10 days of being done. I ended up going back up to 10 mg again. I have been on the 10 mg for a week now. The withdrawal symptoms are horrible. Unbearable ruminations, major depression, and unable to sleep very well. All I want to do is stabilize for a couple of months

Moderator's note: link to benzo thread - Thesureshot - The Benzo Thread Hi everyone! First and foremost, I'm so grateful to have found this website and thank you for sharing all of your stories - they've really helped me realize that I'm not alone. A little on my background -- had a major life event (move abroad) in 2016 that eventually lead to a nervous breakdown in early 2017. Severe depression, anxiety, several panic attacks a day -- all that kind of fun stuff. I was referred to a psychiatrist in the UK who put me on Effexor and Xanax almost immediately. In desp
  22. Hi All! Sorry for long post, but I just wanted to share my whole story. I've been following this site since my last taper.. but was hoping I would never need to post here for advice.. but here I am... I started Lexapro around 2009 due to depression that was caused by external factors. I was having family issues and struggling in college. I started drinking a lot and smoking cigarettes... that's when I thought something might be wrong with me so after talking to some friends, they recommended I go to a doctor. Well, I ended up at the university's psychiatr
  23. Hi everyone, glad to have found this forum. I'm from the Netherlands and we don't have big, active forums in Dutch with so much information and help-topics. I've been reading a few of them last night and it was really comforting. At the moment I'm tapering from 15 mg of escitalopram. Now on 5 mg. The first SSRI I took was fluvoxamine (Luvox) and it worked wonders. Also had CBT and was introduced to Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. I tapered after 1,5 / 2 years, but relapsed a few months later and started taking Luvox again. This time it didn't have any effect so after 9 weeks I went to
  24. Hi, I've been taking 10 mg of Lexapro for the last 12 years. I decided in October 2015 that I wanted to get off Lexapro. I read that you should taper off the drugs slowly so that's exactly what I did over a 6 month period. I was completely off in March 2016 and the first 2 weeks I was fine. Then the 3rd week I started to get heart palpitations, anxiety, extreme fatigue(body feels so heavy), terrible brain fog, dizziness, shaky, tingling and numbness in left foot and muscle pain that shifts to different areas of my body. At first I didn't think it was related to coming off Lexapro so I went to
  25. Hi, I really don't know how to do this so please bare with me here. I have never used a website like this before - So I am new here. I don't know what else to do at this point. I am looking for some help and support from people that know what I'm going through and have experience in this area. I have been on Lexapro for over 3 years now - 20mg each night. On January 1st I decided I was going to taper off, like I have in the past with other drugs ive been on. It was my choice, I wanted to be completely free of any antidepressant or antipsychotic pharmaceutical, Lexap
