marie123: tapering trazodone

I am not able to eat garlic for digestive reasons. Sounds like you need to feel better from this virus/illness before going further with supplements. These two, in particular, can cause very disrupted restless sleep.

Hope you reset soon. I would take very very small doses of the vitamins you need and titrate up. I found I did not need as much B12 as I was told to get my levels up. I take the lowest amount I can to keep my levels in range. Haven’t yet tried the folate. I had some bad experiences early on with it but my level is lower than yours. Raising B12 can lower folic acid levels.

Grace

  • amitriptyline from 1980-2002,
  • intermittent  use of benzos over 2 decades prior to 2002
  • 2002-2010 Klonopin 1-2 mg., ambien 10--20, mg, remeron 4 mg. and  trileptal 300 mg
  • 2011 Stopped ambien and crossed over to valium 17.5 mg. (updosing 2.5 mg. to cover ambien C/T )
  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-2023 tapered trileptal to 98 mg.  had to completely stop tapering due to multiple chronic, serious health issues
  • currently 2024 still on 98 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •   Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.   The diazepam is way weaker and brought on severe acute w/d
  • Current dose of diazepam is 7.9 and valium is 6.6.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

Hi Marie,

I made another cut 3 days ago (5%)
In the evening of the second day, I became very tired
Last night was very strange
I was tired at the same time, but I was also insomnia
As if I hadn't slept at all, but I had dreams
The sleep was very superficial, usually not.
Could it be that the dose reduction works so quickly?
Have you experienced severe fatigue and insomnia for 2-3 days already?
The body is also somehow sore

Hello Estman. Yes, you can feel some cuts quite quickly. I have experienced feeling cuts even the next day. It changes up sometimes. Next time when you cut it could be the same or you might feel it some days later. I know I like to feel a pattern with this stuff, but sometimes it doesn't happen. I have also had that wired and tired feeling. You're tired but you can't fall asleep. That doesn't last so don't overthink it. The sleep will normalize. Just hold your cut for a while. I get a lot of fatigue at times. All I know is I keep getting lower on dose and that's what is important to me.

Hello everyone. I have stabilized from my last cut. The leg achyness has calmed down to a tolerable level. My right knee is slowly improving. Pain and stiffness is considerably down and limping is not so obvious. I think it will clear slowly. So far my last two cuts have hit me mostly in my legs. I guess I just have to prepare myself for it happening when I make my next small cut. This will be after my physical appointment and booster covid shot next week. I want to get an appt. for a colonoscopy too, then I will cut.

I guess I'll tell my nice doc that I've been tapering Mirt and down to less than half the original dose (7.5). You see I have a huge supply so if he gets funny and wants to cut me off I'll have plenty. Docs are funny sometimes. They'll find a reason to cut you off, you're overweight, pre-diabetic, chlorestoral is too high, etc blah blah. Yea doc I know, that's why I want off. Besides tapering this spring and summer, the goal is to lose another 10 pounds and to get stronger. When I'm off the Mirt I won't have that much conditioning to do this way I hope. Gardening will help with that. I just had a large beautiful patio installed and want to do a lot of planting. We're setting up a large vegetable garden too. I'll keep going. Marie.

Well done Marie! Your vegetable garden sounds wonderful. I live at 6300 feet in Wyoming and the growing season is very short. When I lived at a lower elevation, I had a very nice garden. I miss it. I grow some flowers now and enjoy them instead.

I am going for a physical in a couple of weeks which I have avoided for years. I want to see what the results would be. I suspect low Vit D and maybe a bit anemic. Anemia runs in my family. Hi Marie!
I have 6 days since the last cut.
On the second day, extreme fatigue began, and it was on the third day
On the fourth day, there was a headache and a slight increase in blood pressure
The day before yesterday, I took half a tablet of Micard to lower my blood pressure
The headache lasted for a day and a half.
It was weird, as if on one side
I took both Paracetamol and Ibuprofen twice
Apparently, however, they had virtually no effect.
Yesterday the headache was over, but by the evening there was a lot of restlessness and agitation
Today there is a lot of dizziness and stunning weakness
It's like more fatigue and at the same time the limbs are very weak
The hands and feet, especially the knees, hurt and can't be lifted much
At the same time, there is a strange feeling in the head.

Have you experienced such limb weakness-weakness?
Will it pass?
Or it could be from high blood pressure or Ibuprofen (I took it the day before yesterday)
This weakness is even lying down and excruciating.

Hi Estman. It seems to me that whenever I try a supplement my symptoms increase. Sometimes it's insomnia that gets worse, sometimes dizziness, etc. I don't remember specifically what happened, but whenever a supplement makes me feel worse, I stop it of course. So if I want to try a supplement I would try half the lowest dose and see how I do. If you feel worse than before you started them I might discontinue them. Has the B12 helped you feel a bit better? You might try waiting another week or two to see how you do, unless you notice something is worse.

My legs are the problem now with the cut I made, achy and tingly. Both ache but the right knee I think I twisted it because the tendons are tight as a w/d symptom when I cut. I am limping about but trying to stay off my feet. The cut was small but I cut early at just over two weeks. It's frustrating but I think it will all improve once I'm stable. It's only been a week since I cut. I'm taking Ibuprofen here and there that seems to help. It's a lousy effing journey at times. Frustrating. Be well. Marie.

I forgot to add that I have now taken a bioactive 1200ug of vitamin B12 for 15 days in the morning
and after lunch folic acid 500mg
I feel that there is an increase in iron or like akathisia and at the same time my legs and hands are somehow weak
It is not possible to lie down in bed, as the physical restlessness in the limbs is unpleasant.

Could it be one of those vitamins?
Maybe too strong?

Hi Estman,

I jumped off Marie's topic to answer your query about B vitamins.

I have become extremely deficient in B vitamins in  my efforts to avoid them as supplements and my diet is pretty limited.  The B vitamins are very very stimulating to me.  That said,  I am slowly adjusting to low(er) dose injections of B12 and trying to summon up the courage to start taking folate.  It is often found that folic acid makes people agitated, edgy, sleepless, etc. so if you take it you might want to take the 5-MTHF version of folic acid.  It is methylated and easier and less stimulating for some people.  Of course, you might be one of the lucky ones who sleep well and are not stimulated by the B's .  They are super important to over-all health.  My own physical and mental health has been greatly impacted by letting myself get so deficient in almost all nutriets but especially the B's and vitamin D.  Vitamin D, as well, can be very stimulating.  It is actually a hormone with steroid-like properties so I am struggling to sleep and get enough in me to correct my gross deficiency.  Like everything else in withdrawal, adding anything into the formula (that, perhaps wasn't there all along) can make a significant impact.  You can read quite a bit on-line about B vitamins, especially B12 and side effects.  Many people actually report better sleep with B12 but they are not on psych drugs that interact.  Hope this helps and that you are able to tolerate the B's you need.

Grace

Hi Grace,
I took B12 and folic acid for 10 days in a row
Since in the meantime I had a viral illness, I took a 3-4 day break and did not take them
Now I have taken the last 5-6 days again
1200ug of vitamin B12 in the morning (methylated, bioactive) and 800ug of folic acid after lunch (methylated, bioactive)
However, I reduced my antidepressant clomipramine by 5% 6 days ago.
On the second day after the reduction, very much fatigue started, on the 3-4 days there was a headache, since yesterday there is a strong restless agitation, but at the same time the limbs are very weak.
It feels like akathisia. There is also dizziness or drowsiness
When I started giving up an antidepressant 2 years ago my blood B12 level was 485pmol / L, now 2 weeks ago it was only 193pmol / L
Two years ago the folate in the blood was 32.66nmol / l, and two weeks ago only 7.3nmol / l
This spring has been a lot of fatigue and depression
Since I have had anemia, I started taking B12 and folic acid.
But now such symptoms.
Maybe I take too many of these vitamins?
Or are they too strong?

I forgot to add that I have now taken a bioactive 1200ug of vitamin B12 for 15 days in the morning
and after lunch folic acid 500mg
I feel that there is an increase in iron or like akathisia and at the same time my legs and hands are somehow weak
It is not possible to lie down in bed, as the physical restlessness in the limbs is unpleasant.

Could it be one of those vitamins?
Maybe too strong?

Hello. It sounds like those supplements are giving you increased withdrawal. I would discontinue them if I were you. I get stuff like that when I try supplements. I've read here if you want to try a supplement only try one at a time and the smallest amount. This way you can tell if it's giving you an issue. Some of us here have problems with supplement during w/d. I hope you feel better soon. Marie.

Yes I've had this and it improves. In order for these symptoms to get lighter I would hold the dose until you see improvements. Hold this dose longer. Maybe next time cut less. Legs and feet, also especially knees have hit me this previous cut. Holding is helping. Be well. Marie.

Have you urinated your own B12 levels?
Many in this forum seem to have low levels. Does the detoxification process remove B12 and folate from the body?
However, low B12 and folate levels are a cause of depression.
At what low dose would you try to take B12, for example?

How soon after cutting do you have foot-and-hand problems in the first week?

Hello Estmas. I would not try any of the supplements now that you have had the reaction. I would try to get the vitamins from foods. In the future when you are nice and stable maybe try a small dose of B12. Others here have had reactions to it. Yes I had problems the first week mainly my legs/knee. It improved but I still have a sore knee. I have an appt with an orthopedist to get it checked. It's a sprain hopefully and not a tear. Marie.

Yes, I won't take those vitamins for a while
Let's see if that changes.
I generally eat normally. However, yesterday I ate a lot of nuts and B vitamins in them
I will have to try low-dose vitamins in the future
I also took B12 and folic acid on the same day and don't know if the reaction is for both or one of them
I was just worried that the levels of these vitamins have dropped so much in two years and there has been a lot of fatigue
I also hope that the situation will improve
I was hoping that B12 and folate could prevent the fatigue of weaning
Unfortunately, I probably also have a reaction to vitamins
Strange that if I reduce my clomipramine, I get very tired in 2-3 days
Even if I don't do anything tiring, it still happens.
These drugs are still very strong.

 Hi Eastman,

(Marie, maybe some of this will be helpful to you too…as far as testing goes)…

I am away from home so I can’t elaborate but two things…don’t get your B12 and/or folate tested now so soon after you have been supplementing. A serum B12 only measures what is in your blood…not what is being absorbed into your cells. Secondly, folate supplements are notorious for causing side effects especially over-stimulation, anxiety etc. Many many people do not tolerate folate supplements even the methylated kind. Your dose is also considered quite high for daily supplementing. B12 is also stimulating to many. I highly urge you to try to get your vitamins from foods high in them rather than supplements. This does not guarantee proper absorption but is a natural way to go.

I participate in two other forums and one is all about B12 deficiency. I have learned a lot over the past years. The gold standard for testing a suspected B12 deficiency is an MMA test and a homocysteine test. These tests measure how much B12 your cells are actually absorbing. I would TRY and find a doctor to order these tests for you. It would likely have to be a functional medicine doctor. “Regular” doctors will say your B12 level is fine. While actively supplementing it really is inaccurate. My MMA (methylmalinic acid) and homocysteine were 4 times the high range two years ago. Eight months into low dose self-injections of htydroxcobalamin my levels are near normal. I have a couple genetic defects that need methylated forms but I do not tolerate methyl supplements at all.

I have to close now. Feel free to ask questions.

Just got back from my doctor's appointment.

Me: "I'm tapering Mirtazapine."

Doctor: "Yes you should taper antidepressants very slowly. They should be tapered every four weeks."

He went on to say it affects the brain. LOL

Previously he told me to cut the Mirt pill in half/go every other day/ and finish in two weeks.

I wonder who schooled him. LOL. I was ready to burst out laughing, but I just quietly listened.

Grace

Thanks Grace!
Very important information for me.
Since I only reduced my clomipramine 7 days ago, I will stop taking B12 and folic acid for a while now.
I try to rule out their stimulating effect
Do I understand that both of these B vitamins may behave differently?
That maybe B12 will be able to take a lower dose in the future and the problem may be more with folic acid?
My blood levels two years ago were: B12 485 pmol / L and Folate 33 pmol / L
Now B12 is about 200 pmol / L and Folate is about 8 pmol / L
Maybe like you, I have a concern that I would like to raise these levels to reduce depression and fatigue.
Official standards are very vague
B12 should be in the range of about 132pmol / L-485pmol / L
But what is the level where it does not yet cause anemia and other symptoms?
Hard to find such information, one laboratory doctor thought that less than 250pmol / L could cause neurological problems.
Another family doctor thought that a man should have at least a few hundred of these levels
It is very vague and I do not know how much it should be.

Marie.

Hi Marie,

Very interesting thing.
Yesterday I had an extreme akathisia or restlessness where my limbs were very weak all day
Yesterday I still took my B12 and folic acid.
So today should have been this symptom, but it is not.
Last night there was a lot of restlessness with a fast heartbeat and I took half a tablet of Betaloc Zok (metropolol blood pressure-pulse herb)
Strangely enough, there has been no akathisia or limb weakness today
I started researching and writing that low doses of beta blockers cure the symptoms of akathisia!
I experienced it quite by acciden

Hello everyone. Does anyone know if Mirtazapine causes a fatty liver?

I told my doctor about my previous scan that showed that I have a fatty liver. I said that I thought Mirt caused it. He told me that it was caused  by bad diet and weight. Doc said just be losing weight the fatty liver would become normal.

Hello everyone. I'm still holding at 3.6 mg Mirt until after my orthopedist appt. I'm babying my knee and it's helping. It's still not right though. I want a scan and some physical therapy. I had my physical last week. I had to get myself in the right frame of mind to be brave since I haven't asked for blood work since 2014.

It's funny because that was the day I went to the doc so sick and told him to run every test. All test results were good. He said I had a virus and go home and rest, so that's what I did. When it did not go away and thought real hard has anything changed with diet or anything else. Light bulb moment was that I realized I stopped trazodone 6 weeks prior. I jumped at 6 mg (mistake). Took a small piece of traz and was better in an hour.

I'm very low in Vitamin D. My number was 18.6. It should be 30-100. Leg muscles hurt so this will help. My cholesterol is sky high at 299. It should be no more than 200. I'm stopping all red meat/cheese and losing more weight. The low carb diet is high fat, low carb. I'll tweak it and make it low fat and low carb. Mirt raises cholesterol and most gain weight from it. It's a double wammy.

It's tough withdrawal but I'm good at distractions. I keep plugging along slowly cutting. I go slow to avoid a tapering disaster. Also Mirt is a tough one. I'm tougher. Be well. Marie.

Hi Marie,
I have 21 days since the last cut
There has been a relatively strong depression and wave over the past week
There has also been nausea at first and no general malaise.
A few days ago there was an average magnetic storm and I immediately had insomnia
I always have sleep problems during the magnetic storm and also during the full moon.
Cannot sleep or sleep is very poor and painful.
Do you also experience major depression about 2 weeks after the dose is reduced?
Depression is already in bed when you wake up in the morning
It's probably a wave.

Hello Estman. I get some feelings of depression when I make a cut of Mirtazapine but they pass quickly luckily. I noticed it was a few days after the cut I think. I slow down the taper if any symptom gets too strong.

It seems that now I am able to take Vit D. I take 2000 mg since I am severely deficient. I would like to again try fish oil soon, a smallish dose, to see if I can tolerate it. I believe it's supposed to help with inflammation and possibly cholesterol. I must lose a bunch of weight to help my knees/cholesterol. I have to finish my Mother's Day treats before I start again. Chocolate covered strawberries are the bomb. Be well. Marie.

Hello everyone. Just got through a stressful couple days getting cleared for MRI. This was more stressful than actually having a knee injury. It does not feel that bad and is improving. I am going for physical therapy starting next week. It will be good to get the body exercising again anyway. During my different med w/ds I went for my back with Ambien, shoulder with trazodone, and now knee with Mirt. Xray was pretty good as it showed only a little arthritis. The MRI will show everything in detail. I've been trying to face my fears with doctors. After I've settled into physical therapy I'll make my colonoscopy appointment.

The vitamin D is actually helping with muscle aches. I cut a couple days ago and muscles are good except knee. I am glad I can take it now. I want to try fish oil again and try mag glycinate. I'll start with small doses to see how it goes. I am now down to 3.5 mg Mirt. I'll keep going. Marie.

Hello everyone. I've been wavy for some time. It was the combo of trying to rehab my knee and going to many doc appointments that caused lots of stress (also the small cut). This is one thing that does me in with Mirt. I experienced phony anxiety. Wasn't sure what it was at first. I just felt really nervous. I just went to bed and just did a power rest with light breathing in and out. These are all the doc appts. I went to and still have to.

I got my second booster shot.

I went for a dental cleaning.

I went to my dentist for a crown prep.

I went back to the dentist for the final crown and adjustment

I had my physical done with my general practioner.

I went to the orthopedist for my knee.

I went for my gyn appt.

I went for my mammo appt.

Tomorrow I start physical therapy.

I have an upcoming MRI for my knee appt.

I have a follow up appt with the orthopedist.

I will have ongoing PT probably at least a month.

I need to make a colonoscopy appt.

In a way I did this on purpose to push myself during w/d and test myself. It's funny how much more positive you become when you stabilize. I want my knee and the rest of me in shape because I have two cruises that I hope to go on next year. I think I'll spread these appts. out from now on lol. Be well. Marie.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello. I'm just checking in. I'm pretty stable now on my dose and will likely cut next week. That will bring me down to 3.4 mg. My tooth that had apico on got infected and I went to see the periodontist. He poked around the tooth, removed some of the infection and prescribed me clindamycin. All of the a/b's make me ill including this one. Nausea and this one particularly destroys good bacteria in the gut. This reminds me, I need to take another probiotic today to help. I'll probably get it extracted. I've had enough with that tooth. No implants for me. They can get infected too and then it's a major problem. No thanks. My knee is improving slowly with time and PT. I'm still waiting for my orthopedist appt. He'll probably finally send me for an MRI.

On a positive note, my physical strength is improving and I am losing more weight. I am eating better and less along with more physical activity. The lower the dose of Mirt the more "awake" you become. I am down about 15 pounds since my top weight on these drugs. I walked around a pretty arboretum and had an afternoon tea at their historic house with tiered goodies for my birthday. So good. Be well. Marie.

That’s great that you are losing weight.  I seem to have put it on but i am blaming water retention and inflammation as the culprits.  Glad you are seeing improvements.  Sorry to hear about your tooth.  I am not a fan of dentists myself and used to work for one.  Hope today is another day of goodness for you!

Hi Bestill. Thanks for stopping by. Yes, a lot of the weight is water retention. It's a must that I lose weight because I've noticed the water weight is coming off too. I so need this for my joints. My ankles are feeling a bit better. It's helping my knees too. The injured knee for sure it helps. Since going low carb and low fat my sweet cravings have slowed. I don't have the urge for breads and pastas so much. I do have a cheat day once a week. That's a day for chinese food, pizza, italian heros. I love a good eggplant parmesean. I set losing weight goals similar to tapering Mirt. I like to get down to the next group of tens. Like going from 187 to 179, then to 169, etc. My hair is growing longer and is looking pretty healthy. I might grow it very long like i had when I was a little girl. I think it will be fun. I'm trying to reinvest myself as I prepare to be drug free. I am trying to address rashes that I'm having and fixing my gut while taking Mirt. I believe it will take me to be clear of Mirt for great  improvements.

I know I will feel different when I'm free so I will slowly remake myself physically and emotionally too. Be well. Marie.

Hello everyone. I am trying to get through the next week of dr./dentist stuff before I cut. I had an MRI for my knee finally but have to wait for the result. I am still going to PT. I like it because it's really getting me back into the gym again. It feels like the old me. Tooth may need an extraction. It's a bummer still waiting on that.

I've noticed a shift or lurch in my healing lately. I feel more awake/alive and I am starting to want to do things, not completely, but starting. Suttle stuff but it's there.

I can handle issues/problems more easily. I won't though let anyone try to treat me badly. I'm ready to open my mouth when I need too. Today I finally went to the nail salon for a mani/pedi. I had my pedi first and that went fine. The tech was a pleasant asian lady. I sat down in another room for my mani. I am wearing a mask and the tech is too. I noticed when I walked in most did not wear one, just some staff. I mostly wear a mask when out and about and I thought the salon might be crowded.

A young 20 something woman is sitting next to me, about 6" from me, waiting for her mani. I tell my tech it's hot in here is the a/c on I'm hot. The 20 year old says, "Why are you wearing a mask. That's why you're hot. You know it's fake right. I tell her it's not the mask and ignore her on the rest of the statement. She would not shut up though. The b. kept going on and on about the mask I was wearing. This person thought she could bully someone whose older. Haha, she picked me. I told her she should put a mask on and that she was fake, everything was fake, and stop going on an on about my mask. She says "oh I bet you are posting on facebook about this. I said something nasty to her and b. said I had a bad attitude. I said that she was right I do have a bad attitude. She was lucky she shut up after that. I might have scared her a bit. You know my Mirt rage is there on a slow boil. This person besides being gullible about covid being fake had a real personality disorder. It seems I attract the crazy ones.

I felt good after telling her off. I guess I'm getting some of my mojo back lol. Be well. Marie.

Hello everyone. For my notes: I am now down to 3.4 mg. Sleep wasn't so good, but I feel alright today. I'm starting to show some  muscle definition in my legs and arms and less edema. I like the PT because I'm finally exercising and I enjoy being in a gym. It was always one of my hobbies but got shelved after getting too deep in w/d. I did workout at the gym for a couple years during traz w/d. I would do it being weak, dizzy and fatigued, but I always felt better afterwards. Mentally I feel so strong after doing this w/d thing for so long. I've found my voice again. Let's just say I will speak up if I feel the need. Stress can get me sometimes, but not that badly. My bad knee is slowing improving.

More positives: can drink a lot of coffee again, finally. My ankles have stopped hurting. I feel more awake even in the morning. I have a lot more w/d to go through, but I will feel much, much better after. I will be a new person. Be well. Marie.

Hi Marie,

I read your masking story with amusement the other day.  I fantasize about such interactions.  I almost wish someone would confront me about masking.  I would have a lot to say if they did!  A...LOT...TO...SAY!  (Pent up frustration from 2 1/2 years)

I am amazed (and green with envy) that you can drink any coffee at all.  I am so sensitive to caffeine and the slightest bit interacts with my meds and over-stimulates me.  I used to drink a venti americano every day!!!  The upside is I kicked my Starbucks habit and would not want to know what I used to spend on it.  That said, I would be so happy for even a cup of de-caf.

Carry on.  You're doing great.  I am not sure I have any muscle left; let alone definition.  Must feel great!

Hi Grace. I hope you feel a bit better. I could not believe it. I did not think I would find a nut like this in my neighborhood, an entitled narcissistic type too. I don't feel great but I feel pretty good at times. Sometimes I have to talk myself into feeling good. Hey whatever works. I am going back to that tea house tomorrow. I want to have some pistachio cake and tea along with a walk in the gardens. I'm treating myself before doc's appt., tooth extraction and a couple of PTs this week. Be well. Marie.

Hi Gigi. I got my MRI results back. Some arthritis, tendonitis, small strain, etc. I do have 2 meniscus tears in my knee, one on the right side, one on the left. My doc explained it did not happen at the moment I twisted me knee. He explained that it happens over a long time with wear and tear. Doc said I probably had them for a while and just did not irritate the knee enough to feel it. So with physical therapy, some exercises at home, wearing cushioned shoes in and out of home, and TLC it should calm down.

So the cut so far just gave me one night night sweats about 4 days out from the cut. I don't feel crappy at this point. May sneak an earlier cut it in a couple weeks when Mirt is not paying attention lol. I want to get to 3 mg and then make liquid. It might go faster with liquid. Trying to lose more weight. I'm going to buy a pair of summer pants I like in the next lowest size. That should motivate me. I'm supporting my good friend who is going through a divorce. She is the one that does not support me when I tell her I'm sick from withdrawal. She just gives me a blank stare. Be well. Marie.

I have 2 meniscus tears in my left knee.  I have found it helpful to walk with a cane in my right hand because it helps me to walk more upright, and therefore not cause me put pressure elsewhere/compensate with other parts of my body.  It also helps to reduce the risk of stumbling and consequently putting more/sudden pressure on my knee.  To start with I was using it everywhere, but then I stopped using it in the house, and then I was able to stop using it when out in my yard.  But I do still use it when I am out and about.

When my knee was at it's worst I was using my cane in both hands trying to take the pressure of my hands; the cane should be used in the opposite hand.  Even with a padded handle, I ended up "damaging" my thumb tendons because I was need so much support from the cane and got trigger thumbs which took about 3-4 months (at the end of last year) to "almost" heal, and that was hardly doing anything (I couldn't turn on taps, wring out the wash cloth, dry between my toes, do up a bra, pull my underwear and trousers up - it's amazing how many things that we use our thumbs/grip for); we were in lockdown due to covid at the time.  It was very painful and I was wearing compression gloves at night trying to keep my thumbs straight so that they wouldn't lock and then have to be released which was very painful.  Even though they are much better than they were and don't click any more, I still get tendon pain down my thumbs.
