Hi Fresh.

when I weigh the 100 mg Traz pill it shows on the scale let's say about .600. That means it weight about 600 mg. So divided by 100 would be 6 mg.

Does this make sense now?

Thanks , yes , that makes it clear.

So going back to your question , yes it's going to take a liquid measurement to taper accurately from there.

Some people have problems transferring to liquid from tablets because it's metabolized quicker. You may want

to consider making liquid from the get-go so you don't face that issue later.

What size cylinder should I get 25 ml, 50 ml, etc? I'll need to shake it up to make a suspension. Any recommendation? Thanks so much.

Hi everyone. It looks like I will be reinstating Trazodone. As you can see by my signature I jumped off at 4 mg on New Year's Eve. I was advised to reinstate with 1 or 2 mgs. Should I go right to water titration? I'm thinking that I should because to convert later might be troublesome. I have 100 mg Traz pills that are scored in the middle, so I can you a 50 mg pill to titrate.  I have ordered graduated cylinders and oral syringes. I have the Gemini 20 scale.

Or maybe I should just reinstate at first by just weighing out my dose until I stabilize? This seems easier at this point to wrap my head around until I get stable.

Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Marie. I moved your post here so it wouldn't get lost.

You might as well reinstate with liquid at this point.

Hi I have reinstated 1 mg Trazodone and I believe it's working. I am no longer nauseous and dizzy. I am going to stay on this dose for a while. I ordered equipment for titration and will switch at some point. I am flabbergasted how powerful 1 mg of Trazodone is. I guess at the end of the taper I rushed it and really did not anticipate getting hit a couple months later.

How long do you think I should stay on the 1 mg before tapering again? The 1 mg is so tiny a dose, so how long should I stretch the taper out--10 cuts maybe with holds of a month? At some point I'll have to jump off.  I'll be using liquid to taper. Do these tiny tapers work? I sure hope so. Also, Trazodone is partially soluable so I'll have to shake it up to make a suspension. Don't know how accurate that'll be. Thanks everyone.

Thanks ChessieCat. I read thru it and made a suspension. I'll just shake it up and draw a dose quickly. That should work. I feel better since reinstating and it's only been 2 days. The mornings I notice are still off, I feel it's like motion sickness/slight anxiety but it lifts by noon and the rest of the day/night I feel pretty normal. I wonder if that's still withdrawal or is it start up of the Trazodone. I think it's still withdrawal but I don't know how that works with reinstatement. Do I just wait it out a week or so and see if it improves or do I updose to 1.5 or 2 mgs? Can you look at my Traz tapering below and let me know what you think. I just want to do this right and I know there are no hard and fast rules.

Thank you Fresh for telling me the truth, that it was withdrawal. Doctors are either ignorant or they just don't want to know.

Marie , I'm so pleased for you that you've had a quick positive response .... that's very promising.

You need to wait at least 4 days for the dose to reach a steady-state in your blood stream. You'll most

likely continue to improve on that dose. After 4 - 7 days , reassess. You may feel you can stabilize

on just that teeny tiny 1 mg.

The sensations are still withdrawal , but they should become less intense , less frequent. Please keep

posting each day as a record.

For discussion on doctors' ignorance check out the section "In The Media". Many are ignorant , they only

know what their drug rep. tells them. But we have to ask how they can even plead ignorance

when there's SO much information out there. It seems it's extremely difficult for doctors to grasp concepts

when their paycheck depends on them not understanding.

After three days of reinstatement of the 1 mg Trazodone I still have that motion sickness kind of feeling in the morning along with some anxiety. I think the anxiety is because I feel the weird motion sickness in the morning. I do believe that since starting the Trazodone again I also have the morning fog like I used to which was more pronounced when I first started with Trazodone. it calmed down after I was on it a couple weeks. This might be contributing to the motion sickness kind of feeling. I don't recall every having this type of feeling while I was on Trazodone though. The afternoons and nights are pretty good as symptoms are minimal. Sleep is fine. I am hoping the morning symptoms ease up soon. I would feel pretty darn good if that happened. Can I expect symptoms improve in the next week or so? I treated myself to a manicure and some shopping just to distract some.

Be well everyone.

Hi Marie,

There is a really good chance you can stabilize on a lower dose if the 1 mg. is giving you side effects. After the initial "bolus" of 2 mg. I fiddle-farted with the dose, and was able to stabilize on a dosage of .5 mg--enough to settle my stomach but not have noticeable sedating/uncomfortable side effects. I stayed there for a week then started my taper. I'm sure you will also adjust and feel better over a few days if you decide to hold put. Like you, I was totally shocked at how strong such a small dosage could be.

Sarah, yes I was totally shocked by the teeny tiny 1 mg and what it was able to do for me. It's been four days now and I've leveled off, and the AM motion sickness is gone thankfully. I feel pretty good and went to the gym today. The appetite and stomach issues are much better. I think I want to stay at this dose for a while before I start tapering. I have a little PTSD from this and need a break from tapering. I've been tapering for two years, first Ambien, then Trazodone. Sarah are you concerned about resuming your taper so soon? I don't want you to get hit again so soon.

It has been five days since reinstating 1 mg Trazodone. Yesterday I had a very good day. I had a lot of energy and was actually singing out loud to music. I guess that was a wonderful window that lasted all day and night. I can't remember feeling that good. Today wasn't nearly as good as yesterday, but I see the reinstatement worked and I'm getting closer to my goal of being Trazodone free. I underestimated Traz, I thought it was an easier AD to taper from.

Thanks again Fresh for all your help.

Marie,

So glad to hear that you've found a good dosage to stabilize on--it is kind of like throwing a dart blindfolded! I'm not concerned at all about tapering now--I feel better now than I have all winter. I'm super excited about finally being drug free, but I'll listen to my body and hold if necessary.

Hi everyone. I was able to reinstate 1 mg Trazodone successfully. Thanks to all the mods for their help. It's been over a week I have stabilized for the most part. I want to give it more time before I start tapering again. Any recommendations on how long I should hold?

Also, can anyone share their experience tapering from 1 mg?

Hello Fresh/mods.  I was wondering what you think about this. I have been having for the past week or so I've been getting itching on my arms, legs, hands and feet. I feel this could be from the reinstatement ofTrazodone. Do you think this means I am getting an allergic reaction to the Trazodone and should start tapering sooner rather than later?

I guess is also could be hormonal (I'm close to menopause) or maybe seasonal allergies. Thanks for all your help.

I was not successful in my first too fast (10 month) taper from Trazodone. I got hit with late withdrawal 6 weeks later and it was continuing another 6 weeks before I restated. The most debilitating w/e was constant nausea/gi symptoms.

Needless to say I don't want that to happen again. If I go very slow tapering from 1 mg will I get milder symptoms/none or does withdrawal come even later with a slower pace? I know there is no way to know for sure, but for you tapering vets out there what as been your experience the second time around. I'm just trying to figure this withdrawal stuff out and work out a good plan. Thanks everyone.

Hi Marie123,

From what I've read of those who have done the very slow taper, almost all of the healing the nervous system needs to do is done by the time you jump off such that there is very little in the way of withdrawal.  When you look at the curves for SSRIs in the paper reference here (Why taper?) it is easy to see that one must go pretty low on those meds before jumping off.   I have no idea how trazadone compares with those meds, though, in terms of its occupancy curve, so you will have to do a micro-taper on down to....?  If it is done such that almost all of the healing is done by the time you jump off, then there shouldn't be a big bad withdrawal waiting somewhere down the line.  The trick is determining where the line is.

It's all about your nervous system and how it responds to the taper.  It looks like your taper before was too aggressive at the end.  You were tapering fairly conservatively until you got to July and 45 mg.  You skipped Aug. but did a bigger cut of 18% to make up for it.  Then you started picking up the speed, cutting 10% every 2 weeks, followed by a 17% cut just about 10 days later, and then a 50% cut 19 days later! From there your cuts were 18,33, and 33% with 19, 14, and 10 days between cuts, so it is no wonder things went bad!  I would suggest holding a good while longer at 1 mg before doing any tapering, because your system is still likely getting caught up with all the aggressive tapering since September last year.

So, once you are good and stable on 1 mg, I'd make a dilution that is easy to work with and do the 10% cuts no more often than every 4 weeks.  It will be a pain but you want this to work, so throw the calendar away and march ahead.

SG

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Thank you for the advice SG. I'm a bit more positive now that I've wrapped my head around stabilizing more and going very slowly. I think I can come off Traz without bad withdrawals this way. Thanks again.

I have a new problem with the reinstatement and I have no one to blame but myself. I stupidly thought I could drink alcohol. I was okay with having a glass of wine here or there previously tapering. I had a couple glasses of sangria and a little wine two days ago and I've had a terrible hangover for two days. It was a little better this morning but I took a nap that was one of those "toxic naps". I feel so nauseous and dizzy. Did I completely screw up this reinstatement?

I guess I could've just thrown myself into a wave. Alcohol is terrible for this and I will not touch it again. Anyone drink and have a bad reaction like this? I appreciate an comments  or advice.

Hi SquirrelyGirl. I did something really stupid two days ago and I'm still paying for it now. I drank a lot of alcohol (2 sangrias and wine). I feel worse now and I hope I did not screw up the reinstatement. My head feels very heavy and I'm a bit dizzy. I also tried napping today and I had a toxic nap. Woke up really nauseous with a bad headache. I was always able to drink some during tapering but for some reason my stupid brain did not tell me to stop. I think it's true that you ADs make you crave alcohol. I know never to drink while on these meds again. Any advice I would appreciate it? Thank you.

Hi Marie-- No, you haven't screwed up your reinstatement. Slowed it down a bit yes, but screwed it up no.  It's very common for drinking to cause this sort of reaction, and sometimes a lot worse.  It will take several days for the affects to work themselves out, then you should be back on track again.  It would be a good idea to totally avoid alcohol until you're well off of the drug and have had time for your system to recover. This is one lesson we all seem to have to learn the hard way.  I'm sorry you're hurting, but it will get better.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Thanks Brassmonkey. The thing is, is that I really wasn't completely stable yet from the reinstatement. Yes I was a lot better than before reinstatement, but still not as good as before I jumped. I drank the alcohol "to feel better". I guess I needed to give the reinstatement more time for some of the s/e's to diminish more.

Maybe I should feel better the longer the reinstatement is? Is that how it works?

PLEASE HELP. I'm still feeling nauseous and dizzy when I wake up in the morning. I don't know if it's still the effects of the alcohol, it's 3 days later. A couple of days prior to the alcohol I was feeling more off than when I first reinstated.  Maybe that's why I drank too much. The reason I reinstated was because of the nausea and dizziness.

I just want to feel better and then get to a point where I can safely taper. I was thinking of updosing but first waiting a week to see if I feel better from the alcohol. Please any advice or comments are appreciated. Thank you.

You're just going to have to be patient Marie.  Everything involved with WD and tapering is a very slow process and you have to wait it out.  Getting upset or desperate about the situations is not going to help anything, in fact it will just make things worse.  Keep calm and give it time and things will settle down.

(((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))

Thanks Brassmonkey for the advice and the BIG HUG. What's strange is I have morning nausea and dizziness. It lifts by the early afternoon. These are my only symptoms. I know to be patient, but I don't really know what to expect with AD withdrawal and reinstating. I've read all the links above.

I've never had waves/windows when I tapered ambien and jumped off. Withdrawal was mostly insomnia for a couple months and then done. Tapering trazodone was not that hard, I would just get some rough nights of sleep after a cut, then I'd feel good and get ready for the next cut. All's I know now is I am worse than a week ago.

Hello. Is there a thread to explain withdrawal to spouse/familiy? I know I saw it somewhere and I can't find it. I tried explaining my withdrawal to my spouse and he just doesn't understand the whole thing. Does anyone have a link to it?

This stuff is really hard. I had a setback some days ago when I thought I could have a few drinks. That's not the worst of it. Somehow I had accidentally hit the "Mode" button on my scale (I've been weighing the 1 mg Trazodone). The mode was switched from gram to ounce and I didn't notice because I did not have my glasses on when weighing. This could have been going on a few days or a week. I figured out I was updosing to 2 mgs, so I went back to original dose of 1 mg.

My problem is nausea. It was before reinstating and is now. I get it in the AM usually and tonight I have it again with a break in the afternoon. Yesterday I had none which was great. I guess I am at a loss on what to do? Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I was still nauseous last night when I took my 1 mg dose so I tried an additional .5 mg to see what would happen. The nausea went away so maybe this is the dose I need to be on? Anyways, that's the plan.

I went to the magnificent New York Botanical Gardens during the day. It was a great distraction and I felt good the whole day viewing the different garden exhibits. The tour guide said there were over a million plants and trees and I believe him! I highly recommend it if you are in the NY area.

Marie.    As you were accidentally updosing to 2 mg , maybe 1.5mg is a good dose to stay at for now. Perhaps,  see how you feel over the next week.

I can understand your frustration with helping loved ones understand withdrawal. It took my husband a while to see the light, in this regard. The book "Anatomy of an Epidemic" by Robert Whittaker, was helpful for both of us. There are You- Tube videos by Whittaker,  in the meantime that he could watch.

I'm glad you had a lovely day at the Gardens.  :)

I hope this helps.

Hello everyone. Just wanted to update my thread. Yesterday I had bad indigestion and some nausea all day, but I managed to go the gym for a light workout. I felt generally yucky all day. I noticed when I took my dose (1.5 mg) last night and was in bed going sleep I started having having some strong hallucinations before I dropped off to sleep. Now I know with trazodone I get vivid and sometimes disturbing dreams and I did have them last night also. I am wondering if I am having a bad reaction to the Trazodone which doesn't bode well for reinstatement. Today I don't have nausea but my legs feel very heavy. I am not sure if I can get stable with this med. I'll try to give it a few more weeks, then it will be 3 months of reinstatement. If it doesn't improve I think I'll do a raper taper and just accept withdrawal/feeling bad for a while. I have been taking 1.5 mg for three days,

I hate Trazodone.

I have stabilized nicely on the 1.5 mg Trazodone. The med is strong so I still get dry mouth and crazy nightmares. I'm going to take a long break from tapering and will start again in September. I'll start with a liquid taper at that time. Constant nausea was what got me to reinstate, if I can do it slow enough to avoid most of that it will be do-able.

I've been also thinking about Remeron. I was wondering how similar a med it is to Trazodone and if it hits the same receptors. I tried reading about it and it's a bit confusing. I was also wondering if when I taper the Traz am I also having withdrawal from the Rem? The two drugs must interact in some way with each other. This makes me consider taking turns tapering both meds. Not sure if it's a good or bad idea.

Hi Marie,

Glad to hear you have stabilized well, but sorry to hear the taper did not proceed well. I've been tapering and am currently at .2 mg. amitryptiline. Sometimes I think it is such a small amount, it can't be doing anything, but reading your posts makes me think it still might. So I'll keep tapering...Sleep is very up and down, and at times I wake up with a bit of an upset stomach (very mild), but other than that I really don't think I'm having much in the way of side effects. Maybe when you try tapering again you can try a micro-taper.
