  • Another day of withdrawal weirdness. The insides of my ears itch. I scratch inside with my long fingernail. That helps. Also my ears make more ear wax. It's a strange Mirt symptom. I am sleeping more and more solidly lately, which is definitely a good thing. I like that fall is approaching. I can really hibernate and quarantine. It eliminates a lot of stress and that helps my w/d. Be well everyone. Marie.

Hello all. I have been getting good sleep even with the cut so that is a good thing. I have noticed lower back pain and stiffness now after a cut. It's improving a bit since. Heavy legs are a w/d symptom I get now from cutting Mirt. Everything improves as the day/night goes on. Soon I will be in the "5s" of mgs., so that is what I will look forward to. Small goals break up the monotony/frustration of the taper. My husband asked how long for the taper. I said 2 years, maybe I'm optimistic. I said that I should be better once I'm off, and that is a little white lie. It will probably take a year after that to be somewhat better. It's just hard for others to believe the time frame of all this. So I fake it a bit until I make it. W/d effects my nails also. I notice vertical lines in my nails,  and one or two of them curl a bit on the end when they are long. I've had this for 5 years or more probably a result of poly-drugging. Stay safe, wear a mask and be well everyone.

I've had this happen a few times during my taper and wondered if it was AD/tapering related.  I'm taking Pristiq.

Yes Chessie. I read of others taking Mirt. with this so I got my answer. It's a great thing there are forums around for us so we can find out all of these obscure things. Otherwise we would worry that it was something else. I hope your last tapering will be smooth and non-eventful. Good luck Chessie, you're getting close to the finish line. Marie.

Hello everyone. Today is a windowy day. I woke up feeling good physically. That is unusual since I almost always wake up in a Mirt hangover for hours. Sleep has been really good. I have been getting solid blocks of hours with only one wakeup. Last night I got 8 hours. Someone on the forum said that you should be your own best friend in withdrawal and have a lot of self compassion. I agree with this so much. No one can care for you like yourself. Cut yourself a break you're in w/d, sleep if you need to, let things go, pamper yourself, etc. If I get a wave of fatigue I crawl into my comfy bed (now that I can take naps). If you are feeling achey, get a heating pad and lay it on you. Take a hot bath with lavender oil. Give yourself a hand, leg massage with some nice cream. I like to use some lavender cream before bed. Nice smell that helps you sleep. In my worst of w/d I would make a mental list of five things to do. Some days I would only get to one or two. I can complete bigger lists in a day if I want to now. It always made me feel like I accomplished something. Each year I notice pretty good improvements. I am also lowering my drug so that compounds the improvements with less med/side effects.

I am now trying to move my Mirt dose to an earlier time. Last night I dosed 5 minutes early. I will keep increasing it to a half hour early, see how I feel, and maybe shoot for an hour earlier. This to lessen Mirt hangover. I notice the less sugar I have, the better I feel. Mirt and lots of sugar does not play well. My root canal is still healing. I am 19 months free from Trazodone and almost 6 years free from Ambien.  Stay safe and be well everyone. Marie.

Hey Marie,

Well done on your journey. Interesting what you say about sugar. When I get sad and exhausted I crave sugar sooooo  much. but I kojw it can hardly help the situation. I also really like what you said abot being nice to yourself. I must try to do that again. So hard when there's so much to do for work/kids/house/dinners and no one to say, 'Here MM, sit down, take a load off'. Probalby jut as well. I think I might never get back up!

On Cymbalta for 10 years after PND.  Original dose of 60mg was far too high.  Tapered down over years.  Tricky journey.

Finally off October 2018. Once over the fallout, haven't looked back.

  • Been on 150mg Prolonged Release Zyban for 3.5 yrs.
  • It comes in blank plastic pouches.
  • The code on the pill is GX CH7.
  • The full pill weight is 0.42 grams.

Starting tapering journey May 2020.  Cut the tablet into 4 quarters. Found the pill cutter very inexact for this kind of tablet. Sizes varied hugely.

Tried one half in morning and the other 2 quarters at regular intervals. Abandoned that plan fast, as half an immediate release made me feel like I'd had 300 coffees.
Took a quarter every few hours instead. Which meant I dropped by a whole quarter. This had me bumpy for 2 weeks.
31st July - began skipping the middle 1/4 on alternating days. VERY BAD IDEA. Doctor's advice. Thanks to Chessiecat and Altostrata and went back to the 1/4 three times a day.
15th September went down by 10%;29th October went down by 10%;Mid December will cut 10% again.
Approx three 10% cuts (pill weight) since January 2021 (2021). Each is pretty bumpy.
July 2021 - Am now at 0.06 grams (pill weight) x 3 daily. (The whole pill weighs 0.42 grams)

Hi Molly. Is that your real name? I like that name. Yes I crave sugar badly. The Mirt increases my sugar cravings. Sometimes I just want cookies and ice cream. I know when I feel stressed or sad that is what I want too. When I have a lot of sugar the next day my head feels woozy and I get a bit dizzy. Mirt destabilizes sugar levels. I am retired and kids are adults now so it is easier. Well done on being able to work and take care of things. I know it is hard, but just keep going. Try to avoid stress if you can. Soon after I wrote the post above a family member told me something I did not like at all and put me in a world of stress yesterday. Today I still feel it but not as much. Mirt makes you unusually angry so I have to try to calm myself when this happens. I know what you mean when you say "Zero knowledge of how to taper off". My doc said take half for a week, then half that the next week, then off. LOL. Does this work for anyone? I wonder.

Lovely to meet you Marie123. It's not my real name, but it is in my family. Avoiding stress is key, isn't it? This may mean taking entire people and chucking them off cliffs. :)

That's really tough about how Mirt affects your anger levels. I had ferocious anger issues for four years with PMT until I went on the pill. It's so hard because everyone is upset by you, you feel so guilty every time it leaks out, and yet - it's not something you are choosing to feel! I don't like being on the pill as it affects other things, but there's no way I could go back to the cycle of fury. For me it's when progesterone levels increase and oestrogen decreases. Makes me into a total loon.

As for doctors giving lousy advice, I'd guess - it must work for the people who weren't on the drug for very long at all. But everyone else ends on the pills forever. We are making pharma a fortune. And doctors don't stop to investigate.

I've decided to cut tonight since I have had windows for several days in a row. I use window days to rest mentally so I can "handle" the next w/d. I think I'll cut .12 mg of the Mirt. for a total of .33 mg cut for the month of Sept. I'll be down to 6.23 mg, so close to the 5's. I am only cutting by 5% of the current dose monthly. I know it's slow but I really don't think I want to go faster than that. I don't want to suffer too much. I might try a larger cut when I get more confidence. It won't be any time soon. More dental work in on the horizon. I pick up my new bottle of Mirt tomorrow. I gave my pills to the pharmacist "Rosalie". She is the one who always screws up my order. I don't want to rock the boat there, but if she screws it up this time, I am going to ask that the other pharmacists make it up from now on. Be well everyone Marie.

Hi Marie

I just read your thread and I’m happy to find someone who is tapering Mirtazapine.
I think I could learn from your experience.

Maybe the fact we are sharing the same name inspired me too!

Have a nice day!

Anne-Marie

2008-Today: various ADs, benzos and seroquel , initially for Anxiety Related Insomnia. (Absolutely no other mental issues than simple Insomnia!).

Numerous W/D and C/T of those meds. During those years, my GP diagnosed me with GAD, Depression, etc... It was all W/D related, I know now!

Fall of 2019, after too fast attempt to taper Mirtazapine, put myself in full blown W/D.
February 2020, found SA and staying on 45mg Mirtazapine, waiting for stabilization.

February 2021, I stupidly used some Ativan prn to cope with Mirtazapine W/D symptoms (By far worst mistake of all my life!!).

Became accidentally and rapidly addicted (within 2-3 weeks). Started taper immediately.

Hi Ann-Marie. Nice of you to stop by. I see you have been waiting to stabilize on 45 mg Mirt. I had to go back to my original dose too. Yes wait until you feel pretty good. Slow and steady wins. Let me know if you have questions. Marie.

Hi Marie,

Thank you for your help. It is truly appreciated!

How much time have you wait to stabilize?
I was feeling pretty well from May to august, like a big and long window.
But in the last month, I’ve been in a bad wave that don’t go away. This is my longest wave since February (when I stabilized on 45mg).

I’m discouraged as I have psychological symptoms (intrusive thoughts) and have difficulties to cope.

During my long window, I was expecting to start my taper end of august. What a disappointment when the wave started. All my expectations Went downhill...

I feel like I can’t trust myself anymore, that I won’t be able to taper.

Thank you again and have a nice day!

Anne-Marie

Hi Marie and others:

This week will be another cut in dose.  Doing well until about 11 days ago when I hit a snag with too much Synthroid and got all the "hyper" symptoms.  So, I cut dose in half and am taking it with my magnesium and calcium in the a.m.  I read from a website that you can get a more potent amount in your pill with a refill and that will cause the hyper symptoms.  The timing is right as I just got a new refill the 1st of September.  I think this has happened before but I just thought it was tapering or something else.  Anyway, wiser and onward!!  For all the taperers -- watch your thyroid meds for the hyperthyroid symptoms.

Marie;  I too, get the itching inside my ears.  It's the darnest thing too!  Good that you are taking it slow and easy, and you are sleeping well!  I think the main reason to taper is to slowly repair the neurotransmitters in our brain that mirt has messed with.

Marie;  great work -- getting close to the "5s" is a good benchmark for you!!

All the best,

Shebon

Started 3.75 mg. remeron 4/2013.  Had tapered off benzo 4/2011.  Had tapered down to 1.87 mg remeron but mistakenly thought I was in bad withdrawals, when it was Synthroid again.  Stopped  Synthroid 3/31/3021-side effects are the same as hyperthyroid symptoms, but doctors have no knowledge of this side effect.  Started taper end of 7/2021, now at 3.48 mg. daily.

Shebon we are both going to do it, free of Mirt forever! Ha ha ha, I should take a poll of Mirt users and ask, "Do your ears itch?" My doctor should have told me all of the symptoms of Mirt including the ears itching gosh darn it.

I'm just a bit stiff and achey from the cut, just minor symptoms. In two weeks I'll make my big cut of .21 mg. Oh man, the phone just wrang. Family member was just in a car accident, hit and run, airbags deployed, but he is fine. Whew. It's a crazy world we live in. Stay safe everyone. Marie.

Shebon,

I took generic  meds for years when I suddenly realized I was often having problems (insomnia, aches and pains, etc) every time, or often, after I got refills. Once I went to brand-name, this problem stopped. It has been very expensive but worth it. Another thing you can do is try and find a pharmacy that will order your med from the same manufacturer every month. They may charge a bit more, but if they will do it, it is cheaper than using name brand. It is the fillers and excipients that change from one manufacturer to another, and for some people who are super-sensitive, it really affects the steady state level from one refill to another. I know people say there is no difference between generic and brand-name, but I unequivocally say they are wrong. Lucky people get away with genetics. I only use generics if I am taking a drug for a very short while. (Though I avoid any drug like the plague) I have been harmed quite enough

Grace

  • amitriptyline from 1980-2002,
  • intermittent  use of benzos over 2 decades prior to 2002
  • 2002-2010 Klonopin 1-2 mg., ambien 10--20, mg, remeron 4 mg. and  trileptal 300 mg
  • 2011 Stopped ambien and crossed over to valium 17.5 mg. (updosing 2.5 mg. to cover ambien C/T )
  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-2023 tapered trileptal to 98 mg.  had to completely stop tapering due to multiple chronic, serious health issues
  • currently 2024 still on 98 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •   Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.   The diazepam is way weaker and brought on severe acute w/d
  • Current dose of diazepam is 7.9 and valium is 6.6.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello everyone. I am in a wave unfortunately precipitated by a family argument. I got angry and felt the Mirt rage boiling up. The two days after that I had a bit of anendonia. I get it once in a while but it is unusual. I then had some depression for a day. Some insomnia. Today I have the benzo flu. The symptoms are stronger aches and pains, stronger dizziness, nausea, weakness, and general overall weirdness. It feels bad, almost like I have been poisoned. I have had this before and this too shall pass. What else can I do but hold and take it easy. Waves come and go. Marie.

My stress wave is over. It lasted four days and peaked yesterday. Today I feel like it never happened. It was nasty for sure. I am going to try to stick with 5% per month current dose cuts. Be well everyone. Marie.

Every day I hold my baseline improves. I feel pretty good today with some windows. Tomorrow I have an appointment for a dental cleaning. I think I will cut again soon in the next few days after the appointment. I will go into the 5's, hooray. I have a new crown going in a couple of weeks. The time in between is to recover from the cut. Family out west has had enough with the Covid and is thinking of flying here for the holidays. I told them to stay here as long as they want to. A lot is shut down here, but the in-law is hoping for snow because she never saw it before. They can't even go outside and breathe the air because of the wildfires. They can even work from home here. They are close family so I can confide in them that I'm tapering and some days I will be "off". Be well everyone. Marie.

@marie123 I’d like to be your friend. I am going off 7.5 mirt only too. Having been doing so well but this last week I think I went a bit too fast and might have to go back up a little. Would be nice to know someone on a similar journey to me, just a thought. Hope you are well

Hi DD44. Nice of you to stop by. It's good to have a fellow Mirt taperer  reading and commenting on my posts. We can help each other, I'm sure.  It seems you have been poly-drugged too. I am sorry you have been through this, as I know how rough it can be. We get closer and closer as we taper, and if we do it carefully we will be done forever. When did you cold turkey trazodone, this year or last year? I hate the way I feel on Mirt and it's not great tapering it either. We just need to get to the other side. Be well. Marie.

@marie123 ironically I have been doing exceptionally well during my taper. I was off and on traz last year, I don’t even think of it now. I had been really stable since about February of this year. Iv gone from .078 to about .066 in that time and I think I may bump back up to .068 because it’s not worth the rest I’m losing. My mood is always stable because things are good Iv got many blessings. My mood and anxiety really only dip when I miss my test at night, which had basically always been the issue. I do ha e some joint pain that I believe could be connected to the mirt but I also attribute it to too much phone holding (stupid I know) .. Iv been just using a scratch method and a scale because when I tried a compounding pharmacy it didn’t workout. I have a huge move from VA to vegas planned for feb and I ha e been really looking forward to it. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi DD44. Is that the weight you are mentioning, .078 to .066 of Mirtazapine? What is your dose now in mgs? The joint pain is Mirt. You retain water on Mirt and it swells the joints. Mirt messes up my sleep when I taper but holding a while the sleep improves. I know I will experience some insomnia as I taper Mirt. It has happened with the others I have tapered so I'm kind of used to that, even though I don't like it.  Maybe if you hold a while longer you will get better rest.

Feel better. Marie.

Hello everyone. I am having really nice windows the past two days. I am even waking up in windows with no morning awfulness. How good is that! I am going to hold since next week I have two dental appointments. I will then make my cut of Mirt of .22 mg and be in the 5's. Yay. I am debating whether or not I should get the flu shot. Last year five days later I had an intense wave brought on by it. I can handle the wave, but I don't want to have to go on a long hold when I should be cutting my dose. On the other hand I don't want the flu and then have Covid  at the same time so I might just do it. I don't see how I can get either virus since I only go out for the dentist and pharmacy. I am voting by mail. Everything else gets delivered. Husband and I are doing Zoom cooking every Saturday with family on the other coast. We pick recipes and both families make it. It's fun and we eat some good stuff. Stay safe and wear a mask everyone. Marie.

@marie123 Marie if you can could you explain to me how you calculate simply what mg you’re at? I started with 7.5 that weights .077-.078 on my digital scale and just do everything by weight. (Currently at .067 and holding) going so slow is a little discouraging so knowing my mg could help or hurt lol. If it’s too much work it’s no biggie. Have a great day :)

Sure. I'm going to use my calculator. I figured in my head the 15%.

You started with a weight of .078 on the scale. Now you are down to .066 on the scale.

.078  x 15% = .0117 (rounded to .012)

.078 - .012 = .066

So you take your dose 7.5 mg and multiply by 15%.  You get 1.125.

7.5 minus 1.125 equals 6.375.

So rounding up your dose is now 6.4 mg.

You should really only concentrate on weighing on the scale or it can become confusing. Once in a while you can do the math and see what your dose is. For some reason Mirtazapine 7.5 mg weighs almost the same number on the scale. It seems the dose is a bit less, so you can always count on the dose being just under the weight. Taper by weight, that is what I did with trazodone.

Hi Marie:

Glad to hear you are in a nice window.  And I hope it's a nice long window to give you confidence to taper into the 5's so you can celebrate that victory.

I am holding right now with the over medicated thyroid stuff, but hopefully will be able to reduce again soon.

We are getting there -- slow as it is, we are not so terrified anymore!!

Best regards,

Started taper end of 7/2021, now at 3.48 mg. daily.

Hi Shebon. Yes I had some good windows. I had a couple of dentist appointments this week. I think the numbing gel I got at the hygenist gave me a reaction and put me in a bit of a wave. I had a post/crown yesterday and was a bit wavy but it has gone mostly now. I am thinking of making my small cut tonight of .21 mg tonight to put me in the 5s. Sorry you are dealing with the thyroid stuff. A good long hold should get you out of it. I've never gotten my thyroid tested. I'm avoiding docs unless absolutely necessary. I'm trying to find patterns with Mirt but the drug seems so unpredictable at times.  One pattern I've noticed is getting hit at about 4 days after a cut, then a worse one at about 2 weeks after that. I am thinking about the idea that the change of seasons, summer into fall, affects the windows and waves pattern. Fall with tapering Mirt is just bugging me with wavy times. They leave quickly though. Good luck Shebon. You are low in dose, so just follow how you're body and brain are feeling when cutting. Be well. Marie.

Hi Marie:

I was doing really well until my last prescription refill for Synthroid.  I think it was an overdose, so now I have cut way down on Synthroid to come out of this.  I did have a bout like this last Aug-Sept. with the same dose but came out of it after a few months.  I've been both hyper and hypo, and I think it's easier to be hypo.

Hope your dental work is completed -- I have had a lot done these COVID months too.  We can easily be pushed into the brink by small amounts of stress too.  I hope your cut tonight goes very well.  It will be a nice victory for you.   I hear what you are saying about going to the doctor's office too.  It can be risky -- maybe as risky as going to a bar?

I just want to be off this stuff.  I am eating lots of bananas and walnuts to help repair the neurotransmitters that mirt messes with.  We are on  the path though --  yahoo!

Best regards,

Shebon

Hello everyone. Since my last cut of Mirt four days ago I have been having crappy sleep. First couple nights I was tossing and turning plenty and woke up feeling like I barely slept. Yesterday and today my lower back muscles were really aching. Sleep was better last night but I must have yanked a lower back muscle tossing and felt a spasm in the middle of the night. Today my lower back continued aching but I took a hot lavender bath and took a nice long hour and a half nap.I feel like I caught up on my sleep. I have a nice large heat wrap that I am using just chilling watching Netflix. It is the fourth day so yes I get hit more around the fourth day after a cut. I find that the Mirt muscle aches are worse with bad sleep. When I get better sleep I have less aching. I don't like taking ibruprofen so I just wait it out. The good news is my brain has less fog even in the morning. I notice with each cut I feel lighter which is a great thing. I'm watching the Queen's Gambit. I love series/movies with women who have the lead part. Be well. Marie.

Fifth day into the cut I feel stabilized. Back pain is mostly gone and my sleep is great. That tired and wired feeling is gone. I slept deeply for 8 hours. This fits my Mirt pattern where you get hit hard around the fourth day and then stabilize. The lower back pain and worsening sleep is also what I've experienced. The waves are short which I am thankful for. I am so happy I'm in the "5's". I look forward to the "4's" lol. Next week back to the dentist.  Be well and stay safe everyone. Marie.

Hi Marie:

That is great news -- yeah 5's!!  I hope things continue to improve!!

I have noticed a decrease in my cravings for carbs too!!  We will get there!

Hi DD44 and Shebon.

DD44 I like to post when things are better as well as the not so good times. I hope that it will give Mirt peeps some idea what w/ding from Mirt is like and see the ups and downs.

I know I scoured the forums for Mirt tapering info even when I was tapering the other meds so I hope it helps someone. I also post as a record of how I was feeling so I can find the right taper groove.

Shebon your carb craving is lessening. That is fantastic! I was hoping so much that these side effects will diminish when I get to lower doses. My weight gain is a big problem, but if I can get through withdrawal of all these drugs I really can do anything, certainly lose weight. Are you able to exercise? Has muscle pain decreased as you get lower? What else have you noticed as you got lower?

Best,

Marie

Hi Marie:

I've been able to walk or hike every day, even some calisthenics.  But the carb cravings are diminishing and that is tres bon!!  I gained 10+ lbs. while on this stuff too and would like to shed some of that.

Don't be afraid to keep tapering -- this stuff will not kill us but makes us dream of the days ahead when we can be mirt free!!

I also have been using Calms Forte for sleep.  It is homeopathic and non-addictive.  It's expensive but worth it.

What a nice time to be doing this too -- with COVID  abounding and staying home to avoid exposure, etc.  I have bought summer clothes from Sam's Club -- when I get there.

Be well,

Shebon
