marie123: tapering trazodone

Hi Shebon. That is such good news that the carb craving lessens as we get to the lower doses. I am happy that my spouse loves to cook and that he is home full time, but today he made blueberry muffins and pancakes from scratch. Well at least I used low cal syrup.

I think a couple days after the dentist I will cut again about .12 mg dose of the Mirt. I should be in the low 5's by New Year's. Be well. Marie.

Hello everyone. Today is 11/5/20. This is for my records when I look back. Today I will be cutting a small amount and go down to 5.91 mg Mirt. In a couple of weeks I make the bigger cut of around .20 mg Mirt. So far my cuts have been about .30 mg Mirt every month.

I've been cutting and coloring my hair since my hair stylist won't wear a mask. I'm saving a bundle. I must say my hair looks pretty good. I'm hibernating here anyways these days.

I have to say I am an introvert and it rarely bugs me. It makes it much easier to taper. There is plenty I want to do though after everyone gets vaccinated.

I've had some really nice windows the past couple days. I really have noticed my cognition getting better. I read a lot and seem to be "learning" more than I used to. I have a bit more energy and lowered sedated feeling.  I moved the time I take Mirt earlier to 9:30 pm which makes a difference. So I feel myself improving and getting better, slowly but surely. It's a better baseline, you know what I mean? Be well and stay safe. Marie.

Hi Marie:

Glad to hear you are getting some good windows!  And coloring your own hair!  I am doing the same and saving money too (and I feel empowered by cutting the strings to the hairdresser and the costs).

I think slow and easy is the key to this tapering stuff.  I had to wait out some hyper thyroid stuff but cut again this week.  I have never felt like the mirt helped get me to sleep; so the lower dose I go, the more this is confirmed.

The pandemic ended up being a great time to taper for me too.  So many issues are resolved with not having to worry about sleep and how one feels.  The pressure is off, so to speak.  I had started a badminton league, and two sessions into that, the class was cancelled.  We are having a huge rise in cases in CO.  And we are now on the orange level.

You're doing great!  There will be a time when we don't have to worry about our cuts and reactions.

Cheers,

Shebon

Started 3.75 mg. remeron 4/2013.  Had tapered off benzo 4/2011.  Had tapered down to 1.87 mg remeron but mistakenly thought I was in bad withdrawals, when it was Synthroid again.  Stopped  Synthroid 3/31/3021-side effects are the same as hyperthyroid symptoms, but doctors have no knowledge of this side effect.  Started taper end of 7/2021, now at 3.48 mg. daily.

Hi Shebon. Good for you to start tapering again. I think I am like you where it really bugs me to hold, but sometimes you just have to. I have a cold now so I had to cancel some dentist appointments. I'll take care of those after Thanksgiving. If I can get rid of this cold soon I am going to make my big cut of .21 mg. This way I have time before my dental visits. I think we are yellow here in New York, but it does not matter since I only leave for pharmacy and dentist. Food is delivered including grocery. I'm an introvert and hardly ever bored. I'm okay with being alone.  Going slow is the way to go, it really pays at the end. I know Mirt's strength so I'm careful not to get ahead of it.  I think I'll have a few long holds at the end and hopefully walk off. Can't wait to the "4"s lol.

Badminton sounds like fun. I remember when I was a kid playing it. I loved wacking it lol.  I've been making lists of things I will do after vaccinations and things are back to normal. My S/O and I will be joining the gym. There are a couple of museums and several botanical gardens I want to visit. I have three concerts that were delayed, Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Steve Winwood/Steely Dan. Want to visit family in LA, go to Hawaii and Las Vegas, one big trip. I'm big on gardens so Maui and LA gardens I will check out. I think Mardi Gras in New Orleans would be exciting and fun. No gardens there except swamps with alligators. I'm afraid of alligators. Oh, and a nice meal at my favorite diner. Well this is just a start. Be well. Marie.

Hi everyone. I cut last night by .21 mg Mirt since my cold was gone. I am now taking 5.70 mg Mirt. I woke up early this morning and started thinking that I messed up my dosing. It took a half hour to finally get my brain to calculate it right, but by then I could not go back to sleep. I dosed the right amount. I had a lovely afternoon nap of one hour and a half though. I should be in the "4s" by February.

Last month was six years free from Ambien, an evil drug. This coming February I will be two years free from Trazodone,  a nasty med. Good riddance.

Be well. Marie.

Hi everyone. Just a little update for my records. First day after cut I felt really well. I always notice lessened side effects and feel lighter the day after a cut. Next day sleep was  a bit rough with a couple wakeups and waking up too early. I feel sore and achey today especially my neck. I know it's from Mirt so it is what it is. Family member who came over last week tested positive for Covid. My husband and I were exposed, but do not have the symptoms. We were thinking of getting tested but lines are 3 hours long. It will be just the two of us for Thanksgiving and we'll leave some extra food at family member's front door.

Happy Thanksgiving folks. Stay safe, wear a mask and be well everyone. Marie.

Hi Marie, you are taking it nice and slowly. Looks good! I hope you and your husband stay healthy. Happy Thanksgiving.

On Cymbalta for 10 years after PND.  Original dose of 60mg was far too high.  Tapered down over years.  Tricky journey.

Finally off October 2018. Once over the fallout, haven't looked back.

  • Been on 150mg Prolonged Release Zyban for 3.5 yrs.
  • It comes in blank plastic pouches.
  • The code on the pill is GX CH7.
  • The full pill weight is 0.42 grams.

Starting tapering journey May 2020.  Cut the tablet into 4 quarters. Found the pill cutter very inexact for this kind of tablet. Sizes varied hugely.

Tried one half in morning and the other 2 quarters at regular intervals. Abandoned that plan fast, as half an immediate release made me feel like I'd had 300 coffees.
Took a quarter every few hours instead. Which meant I dropped by a whole quarter. This had me bumpy for 2 weeks.
31st July - began skipping the middle 1/4 on alternating days. VERY BAD IDEA. Doctor's advice. Thanks to Chessiecat and Altostrata and went back to the 1/4 three times a day.
15th September went down by 10%;29th October went down by 10%;Mid December will cut 10% again.
Approx three 10% cuts (pill weight) since January 2021 (2021). Each is pretty bumpy.
July 2021 - Am now at 0.06 grams (pill weight) x 3 daily. (The whole pill weighs 0.42 grams)

Hi Chessie. Hi Molly. I hope you are all doing well.

I had a rough night last night a few days after the cut. My neck was stiff and painful but I refused to take anything for it. Well I had a bad night sleeping, literally waking up every hour. I would have woken up a couple times due to the cut, but with the neck pain it was awful. Maybe I should have taken ibuprofen during the night. Previously it has given me insomnia when I take it at night. So I took some today and it really helped. I'll take some tonight at bedtime and hope it helps me sleep like it used to years ago.

I'm very tired today and taking it easy watching the Thanksgiving parade. A contact tracer called (sounded like kids were screaming in the background and had to repeat answers) and asked a bunch of questions.  I know it's an important job but did they have to call on a holiday. I guess I'm just grouchy today. I'll try to limit my computer time to help my sore neck.

Today I'll deliver some food, have a great meal, do some online shopping, and have some chocolate cheesecake. Yum. Marie.

I find that a bath with lots and lots of epson salts helps my neck. Like, I mean three large cups - no amount is too much! I['m sorry you're in pain.

Thanks Molly. You've gotten the neck pain too? It's weird on just my left side. I get most of my physical stuff on the left side. I have to look around the house. I might have some lying around. If not I'll order some. Three large cups you use, that's a big amount but I'm going to try it. I had a hot lavender bath last night but it did not help too much. Whenever I have a w/ issue I try to find something to help it. Usually by the time I get it the issue is gone, lol. I have a cabinet full of supplements that I have not touched. One day when I'm done I'll post a picture of everything lol. Marie.

Hi Marie

like you I didn’t get the best rest last night too. In fact I got none. But that was the first 0 day in about 5 or 6 days so I’m making progress. I’m trying to be very in the moment and ask myself although I didn’t get rest what can I do to mitigate whatever symptoms I’m having now during the day. I like ice packs for my face for some reason when I didn’t get rest. I’m going to see my cousins now. Hope you get rest tonight and have a nice day

Thanks DD. I'm going to use an ice pack too. Sorry you did not sleep tonight. Everything is so much better with sleep. Have fun at your cousins. Hey Molly, I just ordered a gallon bucket of lavender epsom salts. I'm watching the Westminster Dog Show. I just love dogs. Be well. Marie.

Hello. I had great restorative sleep last night. Maybe it was all the turkey I ate. I remember reading something about lowering histamine with Tart Cherry Juice. Histamine is apparently an issue with Mirt. I don't completely understand it and I'm not ready to completely overhaul my diet yet. I read that it helps lower histamine which helps pain and is good for sleep.  I had a small glass of it and so did my husband. His sleep has been horrible for many years. There is no reason for it, he takes no meds and is extremely healthy especially for his age. I have warned him never to take sleep drugs and he knows this seeing my struggle. He used to take Afrin nose spray for years and decided to quit since he was getting headaches from it. Well he did have withdrawal from it so he did taper. He got headaches throughout the taper but when he was off they slowly went away after a few months. He gets up in the middle of the night and does the dishes. He says it relaxes him for some reason and then goes back to sleep. He does this just about every night.

My achy neck is still achy but it is no longer stiff so I guess that is an improvement. I have been taking Ibuprofen on and off. I took some before bedtime and luckily they did not give me insomnia. Yay. I've been alternating with hot and cold pads. It helps. I need to get this neck in shape soon since I have dental work next week. This is a new symptom. I do not like new symptoms. Be well everyone. Marie.

Hi Marie

maybe try some light chiropractic care? I believed they can help but should never need more than 1x a wk for 2-3 wks before expected improvements.

(Iv been a personal trainer for 12 years so Iv had many clients with neck issues)

I myself have dealt with a lot of pain issues even in 34 years, having been a semi athlete. Yoga and meditation could also likely help your neck as well. Posture analysis too. So much out there. I hope it feels better soon. My rest was a little better last night thank goodness. My body really seems to demand I keep a regimented night schedule consisting of meditation, reading and stretches. Anyhow have a nice Friday x

Marie,

Yes, mirtazapine has histamine-lowering properties. So by taking less, histamine levels may go up. An allergist once refused to test me because I was taking remeron, which he said would make testing inaccurate. He was very mean.  He insisted I “just stop taking it” and when I told him it wasn’t that simple, he was extremely derisive. Obviously I never went back.

Good job with the taper so far!

Hi Grace. Thanks for stopping by. I am in a real pickle now. I realized the reason my neck hurts so much. On the 22nd I helped my husband carry into another room a large 55" flat screen TV. It did not feel heavy but we had to lower it to the stand. I remember feeling the pull on the back of my neck and bottom of skull area.  \It was stiff for a couple days then the stiffness subsided some to be replaced with constant pain. This is where my neck pain is -- and it is very painful. Ibuprofen every 4 hours helps but does not cover it. Warm/cold pats bring a bit of relief. I do not believe it was the .20 mg Mirt cut, but I updosed last night a bit. I wake up in pain in the middle of the night and have trouble sleeping

I have to quarantine because of contact with someone with Covid so I can't get to the doctor's. I called the office and told another doc (mine was not on call) my issues. He is calling in to the pharmacy muscle relaxers. I have never taken them but I don't care it's too painful and maybe I can get it to calm down and go away. I may just take a quarter and see how it goes. I draw the line with meds at bad pain. Marie.

Hi Marie,

I suffer from chronic neck pain and I know how disabling it can be.  I use heat packs only for pain relief.  I also am very very careful not to do activities that trigger additional pain.  My neck pain comes from my spine but your neck pain really sounds like it is coming from muscle strain.  I think resting, taking pain meds sparingly, and avoiding any activity that strains your neck (especially lifting, reaching overhead, stretching it too much) is the best antidote to acute neck pain.  I have lived with it for 30 years.  It always get better with time.  I say to take pain meds;relaxants sparingly because if they help too much, then you do not "guard" you neck enough to help it heal, because it doesn't hurt.  Guarding is a loose term.  It does not mean no moving but it does mean gentle movement (no extreme stretches) and avoiding triggers.  In fact it is very important to keep your neck moving or it can lead to other problems such as with your shoulders.  Since it has only been a few days, I would be optimistic that this is going to heal with some TLC and won't need much intervention.  The w/d may not be helping, but even if it is exacerbating things, I know you don't want to go backwards.  I believe this, too, shall pass.  I have spent 3 decades going through neck flare-ups.  Tons of physical therapy did not help.  I just had to learn what to do and what not to do to avoid the flare-ups.  Our spines are very sensitive.  A tug on one end of your spine can travel up and down and affect any and all parts of it.

Hope you feel better soon.  I find that reassuring myself that "this too shall pass" is most effective.

Hello Grace. Thanks for thoughtful recommendations. It was definitely helpful. Reaching overhead I did not know and stupidly I'm using one of those Revlon Heated Hair brushes that are so popular. It's heavy on a good day and my hair has grown too long so it's a lot of pulling and twisting. I looked miserable to I decided to do it. I'll lay off of fixing my hair nice until my neck's better. My posture is horrible so I need to work on that. My muscles are not toned at all and Mirt weakens them more. I understand about the muscle relaxers. The doc prescribed Baclofen over the phone so I'll keep them in case. I'll avoid them for now and see if I can improve on my own. Stupid me fell back to sleep and forgot about my neck since it was not hurting then. I jumped up quickly out of bed and boy did that hurt. I only updosed .10 mg and it helped with foggy/spacey feeling I was getting from the cut. I can now concentrate on my 61 year old neck. I hope you are doing better Grace.

One more thing I have a question Grace. This is for LADIES Only. During my quarantining I have been not wearing a bra around the house. I have a big chest and between the Mirt weight gain and that it enlarges breasts I'm not sure if it would be a good thing to continue that for my posture. Bra or no bra? What do you think? Marie.

Bra!  And no carrying a heavy purse...I haven’t carried a purse for a very long time.

Reaching overhead to do your hair is definitely a trigger for neck/shoulder pain.

Thanks Grace. I need a larger size one so I'll order online. I used Bio Freeze and it really helped! I'm going to order Arnica Gel since that actually reduces the inflammation. Bio Freeze justs kills the pain but does not reduce inflammation. I should probably cancel my dental appointments. One is for a root canal and I just don't think I could or should do it. Marie

Boy, if it were me, Marie, dealing with w/d, neck pain, COVID exposure, etc., if you can, I would cancel that root canal appt.  I understand wanting to get it over with, but just think how your neck gets compromised during dental work.  Perhaps you aren't aware, but having chronic and sometimes painfully acute neck pain, I can tell you that when someone needs me to hold my head in a specific position for more than a few seconds, it triggers pain quickly.  Also there is the possibility of referred pain with your jaw muscles begin so inter-twined with your neck muscles.

I think the Bio-Freeze would be fine.  Be careful how you sleep.  Using a pillow that is too thick is hard on your neck.  In fact, holding your neck in as neutral a position (straight up from your spine) is the most healing.  I am pretty sure my chronic neck pain and injury came from the 3 decades of needle-work I did...I was always hunched over my cross-stitch, crocheting, you name it, I did it!  Eventually, my neck stopped tolerating that position and I gave up needlework all together.

Did you know Baclofen has effect on GABA receptors?  It is deemed non-addictive by most, but that is what they said about Ambien too, isn't it?  We both learned that not to be the case!  I think you can buy lidocaine patches over the counter now, but I am not sure.  They used to help me when I got a frozen shoulder resulting from whip lash in a car accident.  Eventually the lidocaine interacted with my other drugs and I had to stop; it gave me respiratory depression but you are not me, and I think those patches are a lot safer than oral drugs.

Just some more food for thought, Marie.  I feel optimistic for you.  It is your first real neck problem so if you address it early, it should go away soon.  If it weren't for COVID, I would recommend gentle massage.  My husband has learned how to massage my neck.  It helps.

Thanks Grace for all your suggestions. I have comfy pillows but I've gotten into a habit of using two pillows stacked on top of each other. I've stopped that and only use one now. It was jacking my neck up on an angle as I slept. I won't be using the Baclofen. Good news my neck is feeling better. It's a bit bothersome now by has improved a bunch. I will be out of quarantine before my endo appt so I think I will go if I continue to improve. This guy is a top endo and I can only use him with a special call from my dentist. Plus I cancelled once before. The virus is rising fast in my area and it will be more risky if I wait.

What is very strange is that the Ibuprofen made me very sleepy all day long. I felt like a space cadet yesterday. I cut down to one pill at a time for now. Years ago I could take it at night and sleep well. During my Ambien/Traz w/d it hyped me up and had insomnia if I took it at night. Like drinking a cup of coffee at bedtime. So my updose was .15 mg and I am now taking 5.85 mg. I will hold until I am solidly stable, possibly until the new year. Mirt is officially my enemy now. Excuse my language please but it is a potent POS.

Be well everyone. Marie.

Hello everyone. It's a cold, rainy, and windy day here in NY. It's going to be a long winter that's for sure. My neck is a bit achy but I only took one tylenol today.

Something positive I've noticed the past few days. I thought it was just an anomaly at first. I had been having trouble taking baths, getting in and out of the tub because of my weak and stiff muscles and joints. It's been a challenge the past couple years. I've noticed the past week that I am losing some of the stiffness/weakness and could get up out of the tub pretty easily. I might have turned a corner on that front. I  guess some muscles are coming back online thankfully. Be well. Marie.

Hello everyone. I made an awful tapering mistake. I updosed accidentally from 6 mg to 6.5 mg Mirt.

On Nov. 1 I was taking 6 mg of Mirt. I had been at that dose for some weeks and decided it was time to taper it soon. I had to change to using two different size syringes, one 5 ml and one 1 ml. The way my liquid med is written is:  7.5 mg/5 ml. It can be confusing at times.

The 5 ml syringe I filled correctly with the dose of 5 mg. So I used a filled 1 mg syringe for the rest of the dose. I thought the 1 ml syringe contained 1 mg of Mirt. It did not as it contains 1.5 mg Mirt. I had accidentally updosed to 6.5 mg Mirt. and did not realize it until today. I cut a couple times this month and had one updose.

This is how much I was taking starting from Nov. 1. I was at 6 mg. Mirt to start.

Nov. 1 through 4:            6.50 mg

Nov. 5 through 21:          6.41 mg

Nov. 22 through 27         6.20 mg

Nov. 28 through 12/5      6.35 (updose)

Tonight I will cut to:         6.20 mg

It's too late to go back to 6 mg so tonight I am going back to 6.20 mg. I had updosed because I hurt my neck and thought it could have been from the cut. I am too wired from the 6.35 mg and now I know why. It's too much. I think I will be okay at the 6.20 mg since I felt symptoms but it was manageable.  I'll stay at this dose for at least a month. Marie.

I am sorry Marie. I know how disappointing it is when I have made mistakes like this. At least now you know you feel better at a lower dose.

Grace

  • amitriptyline from 1980-2002,
  • intermittent  use of benzos over 2 decades prior to 2002
  • 2002-2010 Klonopin 1-2 mg., ambien 10--20, mg, remeron 4 mg. and  trileptal 300 mg
  • 2011 Stopped ambien and crossed over to valium 17.5 mg. (updosing 2.5 mg. to cover ambien C/T )
  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-present tapered trileptal aggressively for a year; now intermittently; interacts w/ other drugs
  • currently 2024 still on 96 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •  Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.
  • Current dose of diazepam is 8.8 and valium is 5.7.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

Thanks Grace. I was getting stressed when I found out. I surprisingly let it go quickly and took my notes to figure out what to do. I wanted the pharmacy to make it easy 1 ml equals 1 mg, but they said they couldn't do it for some reason. I'll just deal with the stupid withdrawal stuff until I'm stable. I hope you are doing better. Marie.

So sorry this happened, but you seem to be dealing with it beautifully. Good plan to give yourself a rest.

Yes it's a bummer but I am happy that I've seemed to have stabilized at this dose of 6.20 mg. It set me back a couple months, but I feel good right now. I've been tapering for so long so it's just another bump in the road.

One way I seem to gauge how I feel year to year with less med each time is putting up the Christmas tree. I remember years past where it seemed like too much to handle. Each year it gets easier.  This year I kind of like it and it does not feel like so much to do. If I can get through this week with a dental appointment tomorrow and root canal on Friday I'll be golden.

I see you are due for a cut soon. I hope it goes well. Remember to measure carefully lol. Be well. Marie.

Hello folks. I had my dental work done, one root canal and the other side a post/crown put in. I woke up in the middle of the night and caught myself really grinding my teeth. One tooth I had a sharp pain from and still bothers me when I bite down. I think I know what that means. I am just exhausted with the whole dental thing. The world situation does not help either, you know what I mean. One fun thing we do is do Zoom cooking with family from the other coast. We made cauliflower latkes that were so good. I ate so many that I had a belly ache the next morning. I am still holding my dose of 6.20. I've been tapering since the end of 2013 so I guess I'm not stopping now lol. I hope everybody has a happy holiday season. Stay safe and be well everyone. Marie.

Hello again. The fun never ends. To say I am stressed is an understatement. I have an dental infection and was given clindamyacin. The dentist xrayed two teeth next to each other. There was infection there. I know since the med is working and calming it down. He said he cannot see infection or cracked tooth on either tooth on the xray but the gums were very red. Both are root canaled so we're not sure if the root is cracked or infected. We need the cone beam from the endo's office to get really good pics. In January if it is still a problem I will go to the endo to see what's up. I won't retreat, so I will get it extracted.

I think I will lose one tooth. Good riddance. This tooth always gave me problems since it was done by a lousy endo. The lousy endo sold his practice and joined the same practice as my superb endo. My dentist says he makes sure not to send any patients to him. He has seen his work before. A different endo saw his work on my other root canal and said loudly, "Who did this?!" It's unusual for a another doc/dentist to speak so poorly of a collegue. I got talked into this root canal. It was hardly painful.

You know Mirt causes gum problems with sores and gum inflammation. Teeth decay happens also from the dry mouth. Also clenching is an issue along with bleeding gums. I have these too.

2021 is going to be a better year for all of us. Stay safe. Marie.

HI Marie:

Sorry to hear about your dental issues... not only costly but painful too.  Hopefully, your infection will settle down.  I also got a infection from a dentist for an implant.....had to go through clindamycin too.  Finally, he had to abride it and didn't give me enough time to get numbed up.  I gave him the worse review on Yelp that I could.  I had to go back to my old dentist for the remaining implant stuff.

I have finally discovered issues with histamine intolerance.  I have definitely developed the disorder and have noticed it more due to tapering lower on the mirt.  Mirt does have a strong anti-histamine component to it, so I think our bodies are used to it.  As I got lower, more histamine issues came forth -- I had spaghetti 4x in a week and my digestive system went crazy as well as the CNS.  Headaches, insomnia, diarrhea, dizziness, etc.  I am pulling out of it with going on a low histamine diet and taking zyrtec (for the H2 receptors in the gut).  I read from another person online that histamine intolerance symptoms are like withdrawals from the anti-depressants; but actually more related to histamine intolerance.  ADs are known to have the anti-histamine component in them.  So, I am pulling out of this now by taking Zyrtec at nite and staying on the low histamine diet.  Not easy, but I want to get it under control.

Be well, and hope your teeth get better soon!

Started taper end of 7/2021, now at 3.48 mg. daily.

Hi Shebon. Yes I am in dental hell. I'm on day 2 of antibiotic and it is still painful, improved though. I want it yanked. I can see why Tom Hanks yanked his tooth in Castaway. When I am done with this I will have a great celebration. If I could drink I'd drink I'd get drunk for a couple of days.

I'm glad you are finding relief with the histamine intolerance stuff. I've been reading about it a bunch, but not ready to change my ways. I love Italian food and all of the stuff you are supposed to avoid eating. At the very end, like you, everything will be tried to get completely done with the pos Mirt. Be Well. Marie.

Hi everyone. I am finished with the antibiotic. The pain is down and so is the infection. I am a bit wavy and my tooth is a bit sore. I am still holding my dose. I am not sure this is the end of this for the tooth. I predict the infection will come back and I will need the tooth extracted. Basically I need to wait and see if the infection comes back. So this has been two setbacks in a row. Am I being tested or something? Lol. Stay safe and have a Happy New Year folks. Marie.
