marie123: tapering trazodone

Hello everyone. I am still dealing with the remnants of the side effects of the booster shot I believe. I have fatigue and cold symptoms left. They seem to be improving with rest and time.  So I will wait for my next cut until I feel good for a couple days. I like to not only have afternoon/evening windows but better mornings before I cut. Holds are important. Friend of mine had similar symptoms from the Pfizer vaccine. It is possible I caught something right before the shot. I've noticed going through withdrawal for some time that whenever there is a change of season, summer to fall, fall to spring, w/d increases.

I have a dentist appt. for a crown tomorrow. It's a new dentist and I hope he does great work like my previous dentist. If he is lousy I won't return. Be well. Marie.

Hello. The dental appointment went well and I'm feeling recovered from booster. I'm getting some insomnia with early wakeups lately, but it always changes to a different cycle of sleeping. It's probably remnants of the booster. I do notice a higher baseline is starting up. I'm going to rest up the next few days before I cut again. I need it.

I just want to say that I'm 7 years free of Ambien. Be well. Marie.

Hello everyone. I was waiting for good windows and now I'm getting them. It seems that with holds of 3 weeks they come. I am talking about morning and night windows. It's good to know since I am planning a vacation to the other coast and will use a long hold to get me in a good place. I am lowering my cutting amount to .20 mg monthly. This is so I stay about 5% a month.

Tonight I will cut .09 mg Mirt to get me down to 4.17 mg. Another .12 mg Mirt I will cut at the end of the month to get me to 4.05 mg. I'll make a few cuts in November and then hold since I'm taking the holidays as a vacation trip. No cutting Mirt in December until I return. I should be in good shape to cut at the half off number at 3.75 mg for the new year. I am going to sign up for TSA pre-check so I will only get minimal security. I won't have to show them everything so my liquid med won't get scrutinized (I think). Be well. Marie.

Thanks Crochet. I'm glad you like my posts. I cut last night and I woke up to windows. My windows were great for the past few days. Sleep was deeper, longer with less wakeups. I went apple picking a few days ago with my hubbie. It was fun and we were eating the apples as we walked through the grove. We came back with a bunch of granny smith and honey crisp apples, our favorites. We are starting to plan our trip. I put in my suggestion for a botanical garden. I lost 5 pounds. I think my Mirt cravings are down and I am doing more. It's slow this healing and all, but it's definitely happening. Be well everyone. Marie.

Yes Alto it's surely improving. I went down .12 mg Mirt instead of the .09 mg actually so now I am down to 4.14 mg Mirt. I am soon to be in the 3's, maybe by the end of the month. The w/d from the cut is mild.

We went apple picking again since it was a beautiful day. Apples are so much tastier right from the tree. We picked up a farm's fresh pie made from fruit grown right there (peach and raspberry) and muffins, and stopped off to pick up home-made chicken pot pies. Lunch at a nice restaurant and the day was done.

I knew the time would come where I would want to start really pushing myself. The time is now so that's what I'm trying to do. I need to get more of my physical strength back. I need to get rid of the Mirt. laziness too. It makes me feel like a sloth sometimes lol. Be well. Marie.

Hello. I'm feeling really good in the taper. Sleep has been very good. It's been two weeks and it's time to cut again. I'll cut .09 mg Mirt. I will be down to 4.05 mg Mirt. I think I will be able to cut two more times in November. That should put me at about 3.85 mg. Mirt. I'll hold until my December trip is over and then make one more cut to be at 3.75 mg. The halfway point...finally. The new year holds a lot of promise. Be well. Marie.

Hello. I just wanted to say that I can now figure out what is truly withdrawal. I went from feeling excellent and one day after the cut feeling crappy, so it's all withdrawal. Now I don't care about the w/d stuff so much, it's all predictable...stomach upset, muscles aches, hungover feeling. It's so boring. Marie.

It's not too bad Gigi. It's just so different from the day before. As long as I know it's from w/d, since it disappears after a good hold. Since I'm going slow enough I should always be able to stabilize. If I cut too much too fast I could wind up with really bad w/d that's hard to unwind. I won't put myself in that position again. You know I was in a bad state from my two previous withdrawals. How's your tapering going? Marie

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello. I am doing well with the cut. I don't feel that heavy sedation in the morning anymore. I feel some of it but it's not bad at all. It feels more and more natural in the morning if you know what I mean. I lost 6 pounds. What is happening is I don't have that voracious appetite like a zombie any more as I get lower in dose. Finally the progress in the taper (actually 3 tapers) is really showing up. My knees are not hurting me for a few weeks.

I think I'll cut Saturday .12 mg. That will put me at 3.93 mg Mirt. I'll take another cut at the end of the month and then hold until I return in December. The end of December one more cut and I will be at 3.75 mg Mirt. I think 2022 will be a good year. Be well everyone. Marie.

Hello Gigi from beautiful Wyoming. I must visit Wyoming one day. Yes I am doing well lately. I do expect to run into some trouble as I get lower. Those lower doses are tricky!

My sister who takes lexapro for years is complaining about all over muscle stiffness. She described it to me and it sure sounded like tolerance to me. I told her it could be the lexapro. She was given the lexapro after coming off way fast on paxil. It covered up the severe w/d she was going through. She tried tapering off lexapro. The doctor gave her the liquid when she asked for it. I advised her to go slow. She did go slower but not slow enough. At the end she went too fast so she went back on. We discussed the issue and I told her what she would have to do with the next taper and how long it would take. I said lexapro is a strong AD and is tough to taper. I also recommended a five year taper and how she would need to be a careful taperer. My sister thought about it and decided she was too old to take on the taper. She was then in her late 60s, now in her early 70s. She did say if she was a younger woman (40s,50s) she would do it.

I wonder if lexapro is harder to taper the mirtazapine? Marie.

Hi Marie, yes you should visit Wyoming some day. I recommend Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Much of the rest is wind blown sagebrush. I, however, am in the beautiful Sonoran desert of southern Arizona for the winter. Don’t miss those harsh Wyoming winters at all!

I’m sorry to hear about your sister’s difficulties. I understand her reluctance to go slow because of her age. I am 69 and also impatient with the process but also only want to do this once. My withdrawals have become more physical symptoms and less mental. I hated that mental anguish and hope it’s gone!

I have been at 3.72 for a month and will hold for another week or so because we are going on a short trip to Mexico. I’m not worried about the travel but have some concerns about coming home with intestinal issues. I already have GI problems from tapering. I wouldn’t go but my husband, who is not very supportive, talked me into it. We are going with friends and staying at a large resort, so maybe the food will be safer to eat there. I am also taking a water filter along.

I don’t know about Lexapro compared to Mirtazapine. It seems like they all affect different people differently. One of the admins for a fb group I’m in tapered quickly off Mirtazapine without too much trouble and is now tapering off Lexapro and finding it much more difficult. I just know I will never take another AD!

Hope you continue to have good days!

Hi Gigi. Have you ever been to Mexico? I have and I won't go back. Some tips about Mexico:

Buy bottled water and drink that. I would bring it to restaurants and not drink the table water.

Don't use ice for your drinks.

Research the resort. There have been incidents a couple years ago about the liquor being spiked with a poisonous substance in some resorts.

The police are corrupt, ask me how I know lol.

I got sick when I went to Cancun. The beaches are beautiful and the culture is wonderful.

It sounds like you're a snowbird and have a place in Arizona. It sounds wonderful. I think snowbirding is in my future. Be well. Marie.

We used to go to Mexico once or twice/year.  The last 4-5 times I went I got sick and my gut has never recovered.  We stopped going.  Looking back, I can clearly see the mistakes I made.  I used to eat a lot of salads.  I think fresh produce is more dangerous.  I also ate outside all the time and I am guessing the food was not always the correct temperature and I probably took in way too much histamine-laden food.  In my last few trips, I only ate fully cooked meat and vegetables, but I did not avoid the ice.  That was stupid of me because I didn't drink the water though I drank the coffee.  I LOVE Mexico; the climate and the ocean made me feel 50% better immediately.  I wonder if there are some herbal supplements that could protect your gut.  I took probiotics while I was there but not faithfully.

If you have a healthy gut, you likely will do fine avoiding the water and ice and maybe even raw foods. (but they have such good fruit!)   I did get very sick once when I ate shrimp that some friends had purchased at the local grocery, but I did eat fish in the beach restaurant often enough that I don't think it was the problem.  It should be fresh to be safe. Take some pro-biotics.  My son got married there.  The whole family and wedding party was there for a week (Cancun) and no one got sick.  I think my troubles were when we were there in the summer.  The food was likely not kept cold enough in the beach restaurants we ate at.  I don't want to worry you.  It sounds as though you are already worried so these are things I would do differently.

Enjoy the beautiful blue colors of the Caribbean and the lovely sunny days and pristine beaches!  Honestly, if I were not gut-sick, we would be spending our winters there.

Hi Grace. Thanks for coming by. Luckily my gut is not too bad these days. It gets screwed up when I do cut the Mirt for a few days. Let's just say I can easily go to the bathroom several times a day. It then changes and I am constipated so I try to drink more and get a bit more exercise.

Gigi I'm sure you'll have a great time. Just avoid drinking any of the water/ice. Be well. Marie.

Hi Marie,

I realize now I hijacked your thread here.  I am guilty of just responding to a conversation and not thinking about whose thread I am on.  I am sorry.

You are handling this taper like a champion!  You are now taking a lower doze of mirtazapine than I am!  I will be cheering you to victory from the sidelines.  I have been following you for many years and know just what a fight you have fought.

@savinggrace and @marie123Thank you both for responding to me about Mexico. I will follow your advice and drink only bottled water. We are only going for 4 days/3 nights so maybe all will be fine. Wonder if I can get away with eating nothing! 🤪That would be a shame since the seafood is so good. Think I’ll skip ceviche and maybe salads. I have been several times- San Carlos, Los Barriles, and Puerto Penasco. Came home sick from Los Barriles and have been sick after eating lunch in Nogales after a day trip. We are driving to Puerto Penasco this time.

Yes I am a snowbird. This is our 9th winter in Green Valley, a retirement community south of Tucson. We love it! It’s like being at summer camp all winter. Lots of activities to entertain us seniors. I highly recommend it!

Also, Grace, I was born and raised in Indianapolis but fell in love with the West when I worked one summer in Yellowstone. Still have a lot of family in Indiana though.

Do either of you have trouble with insomnia? I am feeling very good right now other than deteriorating sleep. I take magnesium glycinate and use lavender essential oil.  Can’t take melatonin.

Hi Gigi. My sleep worsens when I cut too much or go to fast. With the way I cut now (slow and small) my sleep worsens after a cut for a few days. I wake up more sometimes or I'll wake up early (4 am ish) and not really fall back to sleep. I always stay in be though and rest. After a few days or a bit more I stabilize. Then I wake up once to pee and then I usually can go back to sleep. If sleep every gets really bad for you, just hold for a long time until your good sleep returns. I find that works. Be well. Marie.

Hello Marie, grace and again hello to gigi,

I am also trying to get off mirtazapine, and right now dealing with nasty insomnia which is the reason I was put on to start with.  It’s been six days since my last dose reduction and seems when I get hit the hardest by my cuts, starts day 4 and worsens for 4 or 5 days and then starts to get better.  I’m going to hold some more at this dose to see if sleep improves.  Fingers crossed for us all.

Dec 2020, health issues, severe insomnia started

Jan 2020 Doc thought anxiety and started duloxetine 20mg

Feb 9 2021, dose increased to 30mg

Feb 16, 2021 due to side effects, told to stop, opened

capsule and dropped a few beads at a time while starting 7.5 mirtazapine

March 15, finished duloxetine taper, continued on mirtazapine

June, tapered 1/4 pill mirtazapine every 2 weeks under doctors orders, insomnia came back so back on 7.5 mirtazapine

august started taper again after being back on 7.5 for few weeks

8/27/21 - 5.7, 9/17 - 5.0, 10/1 - 4.3, 10/11 - 4.0, 10/21 - 3.7, 10/31 - 3.2, 11/7-2.9, 11/16 - 2.4, 11/26 - 2.0, 12/4 - 1.8, 12/11 - 1.5, 12/29 - 1.2, 1/12 - 1.0, 1/22 - .8, 1/29 - .6, 2/9 - .5, 3/5 - .3,

Well, the three of you are inspiring me to try to taper remeron finally.  I have to wait for the right time though.  It is medically necessary for me to have vitamin B!2 shots for quite some time as I became dangerously deficient.  I was not absorbing B from food.  I put it off so long because the B vitamins have always been so stimulating for me.  So....after I get to a better place with my B status, I will resume tapering.  I wanted to get to 100 trileptal (down from 300) but I think it may be time for me to try tapering something else.  I have horrible, upsetting nightmares.  I often wonder if the remeron contributes to that.

Hi Grace. It's definitely the Mirt that's giving you those nightmares. I've had them many times while on Mirt and tapering it. They are terrible and so realistic. One was so bad that I was sobbing at the end of the nightmare and as I woke up from it I was still sobbing. I started waking up and realized I was no longer dreaming so I was like wtf and stopped crying. I'm on a lower dose now and tapering slow. The nightmares have stopped thankfully for the most part. When you are ready to taper Mirt you will have plenty of company. Marie.

Hi Mimi. Thanks for coming by. Yes, day four is usually when the cut hits me too. It's good when we figure this stuff out. As far as sleep hang in there sleep will come with just staying put on the dose. Keep stress away too if you can, that messes my sleep up. Be well. Marie.

Do any of you experience anything like this - I take the mirtazapine about 930 and fall asleep by 10.  I wake up several times during the night and wake up for good about 4 (ugh).  In the morning about 8 or 9, nausea and anxiety start to roll in and bother me until mid afternoon when things settle back down to close to normal.  I can’t figure out if this is withdrawal or side effects of the mirtazapine,  all I know is it’s pretty miserable and I’m hoping if it’s the mirtazapine causing it maybe it will improve as dose gets lower.  Just wondering if any of you guys also on/tapering mirtazapine have experienced this.

Hi Mimi. It sound like withdrawal to me. I have been waking up about 4 am the past week or so. Sometimes I go back to sleep. I used to get nausea from cutting Mirt in the AM but as I slowed my taper and I don't get it any more. I do not have anxiety as a symptom of withdrawal, but once in a while I might feel nervous. It's so common to feel better later in the day, in the evening, etc. I get that with Mirt withdrawal and other tapers I've done. Try slowing down and make sure your cuts are as accurate as can be.

I made a cut two nights ago .09 mg Mirt. which brings me down to 3.96 mg. It's great to be in the 3's. I feel good even though I woke up at 4 AM and was unable to go back to sleep. I got six straight hours so it's enough for me. Lately I haven't gotten a lot of muscle aches from Mirt withdrawal which is nice. I guess it's because I have gotten low enough in dose. It's interesting and nice to see things go away as you taper. It seems like weight is slowly creeping off. Maybe there's hope for my skinny jeans. I'll keep going. Be well. Marie.

Marie,

sorry to have crashed your thread and thanks for responding to me.  I am also tapering mirtazapine, for the second time, went too fast the first time following pcp directions and crashed and burned 3 weeks off.  Trying to go smaller and slower this time around.  It’s nice to have people going through the same thing to commiserate with and compare notes with.  I haven’t gotten many responses at all on my thread, with the exception of gigi, and it was getting lonely there.  I just reduced my dose again and am expecting things to amplify in about 4 days.  I have felt bad during the entire taper, try to gauge stabilization for another drop based on feeling the normal bad I’ve always felt on mirtazapine and the really bad which comes with dose reduction.  Guess I’ll have to wait and see what this cut brings, an I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed and saying a prayer for all of us here.  Take care and stay safe.

Hi Mimi65. I like when people stop by so don't worry about crashing here lol. It's a good idea to go slower and smaller tapering Mirt. I've found it's pretty potent for a tiny little pill. It seems like you are tapering faster than me. Do you have difficult withdrawal? Is it more than 10% a month? I read your signature and it looks like it's more than 10% for the month of October.  I can only handle 5% a month otherwise the w/d symptoms intensify. If I were you I would cut a lesser amount.

Now maybe I could get away with a couple larger cuts, but if I cut too much or too fast it might difficult to get the taper back on track. I had that experience with trazodone. So now I go slow with what my body/brain can tolerate. Be well. Marie.

Hi Marie,

you’re so kind to let me bump in here on your thread.  I have never felt myself on mirtazapine and always had bothersome side effects like tinnitus, muscle aches and pain as well as a very foggy brain.  I was using it for sleep after some horrible insomnia developed after some health issues earlier this year but after a couple months it didn’t seem like it was helping all that much for sleep.  It seems all cuts make me feel even worse for a few days.  Surprisingly, my first cut was 25percent, from 7.5 to 5.7 and I didn’t feel any worse with that cut then I have with the smaller ones.  Since I’ve been doing the smaller cuts I was trying to hold at 2 weeks but I have been going sooner  with the past few cuts.  I am having surgery Nov 23 and in my pre-op physical and blood work doc detected a couple things he feels may be caused by the mirtazapine so he would like me to get off as soon as possible, he wanted me off before the surgery but I told him I would do the best I could to lower the dose but would not be off by then.  He picked up an arrthymia on my ekg and an elevation in cholesterol, which may be mirtazapine related.  I’ve been trying to pick up the pace a little bit because I may go into a long hold following the surgery so would like the dose as low as I can get it before the hold.  Well that’s what’s been happening with me.

you seem to be doing very well on your taper and your dose is getting lower and lower.  Are you feeling better with each reduction after the withdrawal settles? It appears you have been on mirtazapine for quite a while so I assume it was helping you and you weren’t getting the side effects that I seemed to be gettting with it.

thanks again for letting me slide in here, I didn’t seem to be getting many response on my thread and this withdrawal can be a lonely place.

Hello everyone. I'm doing really well. A lot of the muscle aching and ravenous cravings has diminished quite a bit. I feel no pain. I've lost 7 pounds. Sleep is good and restful. I have more energy and motivation has increased with this lower dose. Grooming has been been better. My eyebrows never looked so good lol. I do know though that I will probably get into active withdrawal again at some point tapering the second half.

I think I'll cut (.09 mg Mirt) soon, maybe today or tomorrow. This will put me at 3.87 mg Mirt. No more cuts until the end of December. I was thinking as I was walking through the grocery store today shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, how often I came here ill, feeling nauseous and dizzy. The driving, the lights, the aisles, the people...ugh. I would feel sometimes that wanted to go with my S/O just in case and to avoid being alone. I just kept plodding through it all. Be well. Marie.

Hi Marie and Gigi,

glad to see you ladies are doing well.  Gigi, sounds like you had a nice vacay in Mexico, how wonderful.  I’m doing ok, sleep has the only thing that really bothers me but sleep was bad earlier this year which is why doc put me on mirtazapine so maybe it’s just bad sleep returning.  We have usually gone to florida after the first of the year for about six week since my husband retired 15 years ago.  We did not make it last year due to covid.  Don’t plan on going this year either as Florida’s covid numbers are still pretty bad and I have a compromised immune system due to non-Hodgkin lymphoma I had and the chemo treatments that I had so we have to be a bit more careful even though we have both been vaccinated plus boosters.  Now I have surgery scheduled next week and if things go well we are going to try to make a reservation in myrtle beach for the month of February.  I just reduced my dose again last night and may now hold until after the holidays.  Hope you both continue to do well with tapering, please hold a good thought or say a prayer for me that things go well for my surgery on the 23rd.  Take care, stay safe.  Mimi

Hi Mimi65. I have said a prayer for you this morning. I think holding the Mirt dose is an excellent idea. Whenever I overthink things or worry about something my sleep is not good at all. I think that is normal. When I first had problems with sleep it was tinnitus that came out of nowhere. It literally stopped my sleep. My brain did not like the fight or flight feeling I got from it. Now I'm made friends with it. Once your surgery is done you'll rest and heal and I think your sleep will improve. Take naps if you can. Good luck with your surgery. Marie.
