marie123: tapering trazodone

Thank you Marie,

I guess I need to hold a while more.  I'm actually OK with that; it's the worry whether I have an adverse reaction vs wd that I'm grappling with.  I hope holding doesn't hurt as that is what I plan to do for now.

Cheers

Hello. I made my cut last night of .15 mg. I am down to 5.45 mg Mirt. I like this pattern of cutting. I cut .15 mg every 3 weeks. I feel some w/d but it gone by the end of the 3 weeks. I get some wind

It's all liquid from now on. The half pill doesn't agree with me anymore. I'll wait a week and start the taper with no more than 5% a month (2.5% every two weeks) and see how it goes.   I ca

Hello everyone. I'm just noting that I am 6 years and 4 months free of Ambien and 2 years free of trazodone. Hooray! With my latest small cut I am just getting mild withdrawal symptoms from the Mirt.

It's more than likely WD. An Adverse Reaction hits hard and fast, you would have know within hours of starting the updose if that was the case.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

So last night I forgot to take mirtazipine. I couldn't remember last night whether I took it or not and did not want to risk a double dose. I barely slept last night so I guess I did forget. I'm crazy tired but I did not have any fog today. I guess all along a lot of what I was feeling was mirt side effects of fogginess that lasted a good part of the day. Good to know. Tonight I will just take my regular dose.

I practiced for my cut of trazodone. First water titrating. Tried dissolving my dose in equal part of water (.006 g weight in 6 ml of water) and practiced with a syringe. Then weighing. I then crushed my dose of 1 mg  (.006 g weight) and divided it up with a blade in 6 small piles. I then cut those 6 piles in half. Now I can get a dose .0055 g. weight for my new dose by using one of those halves and weigh out .005 g. and using that too. I used a mirror.  I think that makes sense, at least to me. I'm writing this down here so I can refer back.

I get confused some with the decimals so correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want to switch to titrating because I'm just so sensitive still to the tiny cuts of trazodone.

Yesterday I felt pretty good. I went to the gym and had a nice workout. Felt some bladder symptoms in the evening and some spasms. I had great sleep the night before.

Last night I slept but it was much more restless with a couple of nightmares thown in. Today I feel pretty lousy, w/d lousy. I am definitely in a wave from the flu. My w/d symptoms have increased. I guess I need to ride it out for a while. The one thing I have now is clarity now that I am on low doses. I am starting to get angry, angry with pharma, doctors. etc. And no this is not a neuro emotion, I am pissed. I'm going to channel it into getting off these meds. The hell with them.

I can't believe you are having wd this far out!  Hope it settles down for you and you can begin your tapering.

Big window today all day. I know what healing feels like. I finally got my strength back after the flu so it's time to go down in dose. I'll make a small cut tonight to bring me to about .92 mg of trazodone.

I feel pretty good today. The only symptom from the cut is that I am very tired from not sleeping well. I only got 4 1/2 hours sleep, but at least it was all in succession. This will even out as the days go on. If not I'll just have bedtime a half hour later. That seems to help regulate my sleep better and then after a week or so I'll move the time back.

An even better day than yesterday with more sleep at 5 1/2 hours. I feel a bit off and have some loose bowels, but otherwise healing is happening. This cut so far has been far better than my recent cuts. My slow descent off of traz will at least take all of 2017. That's fine though because I'll be done with it.

Good to read that you're getting a bit more sleep and that your reaction to the recent decrease is milder than before. Three cheers!

Thanks folks for coming by with your support. Can't do this without you. Another big window day so that makes three days in a row after making a small cut. I had a nice workout at the gym and then some shopping without feeling like a sick alien lol. My brain must love less trazodone. This year I'm not stalling my taper unless I absolutely have to i.e. not for family stuff, events, etc. I must get off this stuff but I'll do it slowly, every 6 weeks with maybe a good pause at the tiniest of doses.

Good luck everyone.

It's been 10 days now of feeling good the whole day. Sleep is fine now. I'm hoping this is a turning point in my taper where my small cuts will be felt less and less. As long as I go very slow I should be successful. I'm an impatient person who learned to be patient. Wish me luck.

I'm getting some withdrawal from the taper. I fell asleep quickly last night but woke up around 4 AM and couldn't fall back to sleep. Just that would have been okay to deal with but my teeth starting hurting today. It's where I got the root canal and one tooth over got a filling. That was about 2 months ago. My sinuses sting a bit on the same side too. When I first got the work done it took a good month for it to start to calm down. I've read that withdrawal can flare up old surgical/root canal sites so I guess this is it.

I hope after a good night sleep tonight it will get better. Lately it's one night of very good sleep after a night of poor sleep. Well at least I had two weeks of feeling pretty good.

Tooth pain for the second day. It's the spot where I had the filling done in the beginning of January. I'm not sure if this warrants a visit to the dentist, because before I made the traz cut it was feeling better for two weeks. I was in a nice window for sure. Nasty trazodone. I think I'll wait a week or so.

Other symptoms: blurry vision/fatigue even though I slept 7 hours

I am 29 months free of Ambien.

I had broke a lower tooth in the fall. After the dentist filled/repaired it, I was surprised by how much time he took to file down the tooth above it. Apparently my lower tooth with one or two decades-old fillings broke from repeated pressure from the pointy upper one. I mention this only because the dental work you had in January may have created a similar problem.

Getting sleep with very low dose trazodone and no Ambien? Priceless!

Hey Marie,

I wanted to ask you if your sciatica ever went away and do you think it was contributed to WD? I developed it in Sept and didn't injury myself at all. I thought this is such a strange WD symptom that I wasn't sure if it really was. I still have it. It's not very painful, more like an achy feeling if that makes sense.

Thanks!

Took 10 mg of Lexapro for 15 years. Started to taper in October 2015. Took last 1mg dose in March 2016. Started having side effects end of March 2016. Symptoms include: anxiety, heart palpitations, shaky, chronic fatigue, body feels like lead(so heavy), brain fog and dizziness and really bad pain especially on right side of body.

Symptoms as of 10/18/16- Burning skin, widespread body pain, some insomnia, some fatigue, some brain fog, anxiety upon waking up, numbing and tremor in pinky and ring finger on left hand, cracking/popping/stiff joints.

Symptoms as of 4/19/17- A little burning skin, muscle pain, FATIGUE, some brain fog, tremor in pinky and ring finger on left hand, cracking/popping/stiff joints, blurry vision, eye floaters, sciatica.

Symptoms as of 10/3/17- Physical symptoms-- Very little burning skin that comes and goes, some muscle and nerve pain that comes and goes, tremor in pinky and ring finger, muscle twitches, cortisol spike in the morning(heart palpitations), cracking/popping joints all those this has gotten a little better lately, blurry vision and eye floaters that come and go, sciatica(less intense now), fatigue which is still very bad but better than a year ago. Mental symptoms-- Depression, anxiety, hopelessness, lack of motivation or interest, brain fog(trouble focusing and concentrating), ruminating thoughts. All these come and go.

Yes the sciatica went away. It was withdrawal for sure (never had it before). I went for physical therapy but it's hard to say if it helped that much.  I was able to do some stretches at home once they showed me them. I improved after one month and a half and it went away completely. There are some stretches online if you care to try some. It might help along with some warm epsom salt baths and advil if you can tolerate it. I found really only time made it go away and it will for you too. I've found that with withdrawal nothing surprises me with these symptoms.  Feel better.

Thanks Marie. That's interesting. The fact that yours went away after 1.5 months sounds normal. The fact that I've had mine for over 6 months is a little concerning. :( I think I'm going to try some stretches and see if that helps. I do take epsom salt baths too. Sometimes it's hard to determine what is WD and what is something else. I just think it's really strange that I would develop sciatica out of nowhere when I didn't injure myself and am in the middle of WD. I pray it goes away!!

The fact that you are telling me it's an achy feeling and one-sided tells me it's withdrawal. I've read many times that people withdrawing have one side where their pain is worse. Mine was left-sided (bladder/sciatica/lower back) at different times. Sometimes my left hip aches a bit but goes away. My left achilles is also a bit tender. Muscles and nerves flare up more in w/d and settles and goes away the farther you are out of w/d. It will definitely get better. Stretching/walking it all helps. Hang in there.

  • 2 weeks later...

It seems after the cut I had two weeks of feeling pretty good. I guess it's the delayed w/d of traz that hit two weeks later. It's worse in the mornings with feelings of wooziness, weakness, insomnia,  a bit of nausea and light sensitivity.

Here's one for you:  I've noticed this several times before so it's a pattern. I've been getting one night poor sleep and the next night better. My spouse is off this week so he's naturally sleeping it. I've done the same. My withdrawal symptoms have increased with increased sleep! I've done some digging and reading about it and others withdrawing have reported the same. Some crazy stuff this withdrawal.

I am now about one month from the cut so I won't updose. I'll just hold at least for six weeks possibly longer. Wish me luck.

Hello Marie,

How strong are your wd sxs?  I am amazed that one can have them after such small dose reductions!

I am feeling the heat now after 3 weeks dropping - anxiety, shakiness, fatigue - main sxs.  This week will be crucial to see what my next step (updose or ride it out) will be.

Best of luck.

They're pretty strong, at least yesterday it was. I'm not sure why. I could speculate and say well it could be partially ambien w/d still or maybe traz is going paradoxical on me. It really isn't doing anything for me now, just keeping worse w/d at bay. I did have a piece of delicious cheesecake right before bedtime the night before, so sugar sensitivity could have brought on worse withdrawal. Having a big window for two weeks right after the cut makes me wonder what the heck is going on. I know that after I reinstated the traz I became much more sensitive to cuts. I also notice that highway driving is more difficult lately. Last week I had a couple of days of feeling pretty good and was able to have a light workout at the gym.

Today I'm feeling somewhat better. I slept very well and not nearly as foggy. I still have blurry vision/light sensitivity and w/d fatigue. I will be going to family gathering with 37 people in a small apartment tonight. Usually I would just drink a lot of wine to get through it, but no wine now for me. My tooth is still hurting but avoiding the dentist for now. It wasn't hurting until the dentist worked on it. I can't deal with a route canal now so hoping it goes away.

Oh I forgot one pleasantry. I had my first panic attack right before sleep. I didn't realize I was having a bit of anxiety all day long. I haven't really had much anxiety during my tapers. It was like a big rush of anxiety, but was strange because I fell asleep quickly after that. I just said to myself "what the heck is this?" It's a beautiful day today. I think I'll go outside and take in some rays on my anti-gravity lounger.

This is a little disheartening to hear about being sensitive to small drops, since I have the whole taper ahead of me, having gone off once before.  I understand that for a lot of people, subsequent tapers are harder than the first.

Hang in there, I will try to do the same!

Nice window all day today. I went shopping and had lunch in the city. Lots of sun and exercise. This is the fifth week since the cut. If the good stuff continues I'll cut after the sixth week to which would bring me down to about .83 trazodone.  Have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow for toothache. I thought it might be w/d related but I've come around to realizing it's not.

I just got back from the dentist and he took x-rays and tested the teeth. Everything looks good he says and asks me if I clench. Well idk but I probably do because of the stress of it all.  It might be ligaments from what I've been reading. They can get inflamed during w/d from benzo and I'm sure ad w/d too. Btw one of the s/e's of trazodone is, wait for it, toothache. Warm salt water rinses for me.

Hello there grace. I haven't been here for a while but I came to check on a few that I've been following. Nice to see you here again. I'm doing okay and believe it or not I'm still on the trazodone. You see I was still in ambien withdrawal and had to heal more before I continued with the very last bits of stupid trazodone. I am on .03 mg weight which is about half a milligram of trazodone. I still feel a cut as just recently I made one and now have every other day insomnia. It's not too bad in that the "other day" I get about 4 to 5 hours of very choppy sleep.

Three years later (October) after my ambien jump I am starting to feel true healing. I've come a long way and feel good a lot of the time. I think my acceptance of it all helps. I've gotten stronger physically and just painted a couple rooms and long hall mostly by myself. Decorating, moving things around, packing away stuff and I did fine with it. I even did some hard negotiating with the car dealer. My walking is better. My gait was off for a long time and it's slowly improving. It still seems a bit off. Too much exercize, alcohol or medicines still affects withdrawal. I've still got a ways to go. These drugs are hell on earth, aren't they?

I'll get through it and I'll be okay though. How are you doing grace?

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Hi Marie,

How am I doing?  A very loaded question.  I have health issues, too numerous to mention that may or may not be exacerbated by withdrawal.  I have updated my signature but with updates it is hard to see where a person was versus where they are now, so makes it difficult to guage progress.  I chose to keep tapering trileptal, an activating, inducing drug and am approaching the 50% mark...yes, it took me 3 years.  My hope is that by reducing the trileptal, which was clearing the remeron and benzo way too fast from my system, I will be able to taper the benzo and/or the remeron easier.  My current plan is to get firmly stable (which is generally a disabled state for me, but a stable, disabled state!)  hold for 6 months or more if necessary, and then try to get some benzo out of me.  This is all complicated very much by the fact that I have disabling spinal issues and GI issues.  My sleep has improved quite a bit since reducing trileptal, so I know my theory that it was clearing the benzo, remeron too quickly is right (for me anyway) Trileptal is a very dangerous drug.  IMO, it should be prescribed only when and if seizures cannot be controlled with anything else.  IT is a potent inducer of many drugs.  Doctors, pharmacists don't understand this...until/unless they live it.

If my memory serves me correctly you were on remeron but planning to taper.  Did you start a taper?  I will be interested to hear about when or if you do, or already have....

Sorry this whole post is under-lined.  I can't seem to undo it and I don't want to lose all this, so under-lined it is.

Don't feel embarrassed with me EVER about "still being on" anything.  In seven years, I have only reduced 50% of my drug load, and that isn't really factoring in every single variable.  Basically, my life is ruined; I manage to get by one day at a time, but with my health problems, pre-benzo/drugs and the complications of the drugs and w/d's, life doesn't hold too much promise for me now, but I will certainly die trying.

Glad to hear from you.   I worry about people when they disappear (as I did, I apologize).  I always just pray that they are doing well and don't want to think about it anymore!

Grace

Hi grace. Yes I am still on the rem. As you know us sensitive folks must go slow, so slow I go getting rid of trazocrap first. Rem will have to wait but will have me to deal with when the time comes. I'll pop in again and announce my rem taper lol.

That's definitely good news on reducing the trileptal 50%. You'll feel better and better as you reduce your meds. I know I have so keep it up. I know that lots of rest, avoiding stress when I can, and even isolating myself sometimes can help the healing. Distraction is good for passing time and getting outside for some fresh air makes me feel better. It's hard to entangle the mess of being polydrugged but it can be done.

Good luck to you grace.

Thanks nz11. Yes so close. This one was so hard but yes, very close.

I read your post script on the bottom and agree whenever I hear a multi-shooting I think that they must be starting or stopping an AD. I know I've felt a lot of rage tapering this AD, but luckily recognize that it's purely chemical.  A couple years ago a shooter shot up a military base here in the US and killed several people. He was on trazodone.

Hello everyone. I stepped off of trazodone three days ago at about .04 mg. I have not noticed anything except some stuffy sinuses. It makes sense because traz is like a super decongestant. It's a strong drug, and feel it's a drug that is vastly underestimated.  It took almost four years to taper, but I was undergoing ambien withdrawal at the time.  I was tapering at a point of being sick. I also held longer at times of difficult family stuff and a couple of vacations when I was feeling better. It feels great to be done finally.

I'll wait a couple months until I start thinking about tapering mirtazapine.

Congratulations, Marie....what an accomplishment!!

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper; withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin
-Tried several times to slowly taper Zoloft by 10%, then 5% every 4-6 weeks; could never get below approx. 40 mg - spring 2012 experienced major WD symptoms due to stress; tried to updose but no relief, back on Klonopin 1 mg.
-Switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to Citalopram. Finished Zoloft 1/13; Citalopram 35 mg and 1 mg Klonopin.
-8/13: 27 mg Citalopram; 1 mg Klonopin

-11/14: 12.6 Citalopram - began to have bad withdrawal symptoms; out of desperation increased to 1.25 mg Klonopin at the beginning of December.  12/13/14 16 mg Citalopram - going to stay here to try to stabilize; stabilized on 16 mg Citalopram after 4-5 months

-7/15 - 3/16: reduced to 15 mg; ~ 2 months later w/d hit hard (probably r/t stress); 6/16 updosed to 20 mg Citalopram and trying to stabilize. Updosed to 1.5 Klonopin as well. Stabilized on 20 mg Citalopram after 4-5 months

8/17-9/17: feeling withdrawal symptoms at 20 mg Citalopram (due to stress) - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg

2021: 1/3/21: 7.8 mg (1.27% drop); 1/24/21: 7.7 mg (1.29%); 1/31/21: 7.6 mg (1.17%); 2/7/21: 7.5 mg (1.19%); 2/14/21: 7.4 mg (1.34%); 2/28/21: 7.3 mg (1.25%); 3/7/21: 7.2 mg (1.25%); 3/21/21: 7.1 mg (1.25%); 3/28/21: 7.0 (1.25%)
