Haven't dropped for 9 days but massively over did the exercise thing 2 days ago. Surfed 2 hours then Walked 8 km on soft sand in the heat then surfed big waves for 4 hours. Dehydrated and starving. I think this is why I've been feeling off again. Was going to drop another 1% today but thought I should wait til symptoms have passed.

Cheers, Nick.

Started Citalopram in 2005 (aged 15) for apparent "OCD" - 60mg

July 2015 attempted 2 x 10% + cuts 4 weeks apart. WD symptoms intense at times. Need to slow down.

November 2016 - Resumed taper. 1.25 - 1.5% decrease weekly approx.

44.5mg November 2016. Jan 2017 42.5 mg. March 2017 40 mg. June 2017 37mg. September 2018 22mg. Nov 2018 Holding at 22mg to stabilise from moderate wave. January 2020 - Holding, mostly feeling fine, but still having some waves at times.

February 2020 - Resumed taper , 1.5% reduction weekly/every two weeks.

Hi Nick

Thinking of you. Sorry yesterday wasn't so good. Don't be disheartened as we all have off days. Try not to worry too much - it should pass. Maybe just a little wave?

Hope so.

Just read your last post! Think you know why you are not feeling so good!

Yes, I would get over the over exertion before dropping anymore.

Dropped this morning by 1% again (Its actually just over 1%) I haven't felt amazing the last few days but i think its from the over exertion. Got the next few days off so thought it would be a good time to relax and recuperate. My aim was to have reduced 5 % by Christmas but ill settle with 4% for now and i plan on holding for probably 3 weeks now as i have a very active, fun period coming up with new years, summer and sunshine and all the shenanigans that entails. I will resume my taper start of January. Glad to have made progress so far. Ive managed to drop 2mg since last month and am now at pretty much 43mg. will soon be on 40mg which will meen i am 1/3 down from my original dose :)

Started Citalopram in 2005 (aged 15) for apparent "OCD" - 60mg

Excellent news Nick. Hope you have a great holiday. Continuing after the new year sounds like a good idea.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Update time - After a very busy physically and emotionally New year's period I got into my second slide taper after holding for 3 weeks. Before this last drop I was having a bit of a wave but thought id be fine dropping. Nothing too bad has happened but im still feeling a bit off. Had a couple mini panics and anxiety but can dispel it pretty easily and quickly. I had some really.late night's over ny at a festival and then came down with a horrible 24 hour flu after. Since that flu my anxiety has increased a bit and ive had a few more negative thoughts etc. Flu wise im fine now , but could this increase in.symptoms be caused.by the.bug? I also inhaled a lot of second hand marijuana smoke at the festival. Could that play a part? Im due to drop another 1% tmrw and I really want to but as im feeling a bit depressed/anxious should I hold off? There seems to be no real pattern to my drops atm. I usually have some fatigue on the 4th day after the reduction but other than that, no real pattern?? Would it be safe to continue on my slide even though im feeling a bit average? I just cant fathom taking longer than a month to reduce 4 - 5 %

Started Citalopram in 2005 (aged 15) for apparent "OCD" - 60mg

July 2015 attempted 2 x 10% + cuts 4 weeks apart. WD symptoms intense at times. Need to slow down.

November 2016 - Resumed taper. 1.25 - 1.5% decrease weekly approx.

44.5mg November 2016. Jan 2017 42.5 mg. March 2017 40 mg. June 2017 37mg. September 2018 22mg. Nov 2018 Holding at 22mg to stabilise from moderate wave. January 2020 - Holding, mostly feeling fine, but still having some waves at times.

February 2020 - Resumed taper , 1.5% reduction weekly/every two weeks.

I'd hold, otherwise you might well end up taking longer anyway due to getting too destabilised.  I know that temptation to cut - oh boy, it's so hard to resist sometimes, but it's worth it.  Just go day by day for a bit, see how things pan out.

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 Now on 7 micro-beads of Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops.

Thanks guys :) like I said its nothing too bad just a 1/10 maybe a 2/10 on my personal scale.

I guess the main thing I want to know is what caused it. Do you think it could have been the flu or the second hand marijuana smoke? Cause I was holding when the wave appeared and had been holding for a few weeks..

Well it's good that you've nailed down the cause.

From https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-gravity-weight/201205/bitter-pill-swallow-grapefruit-juice-and-medication

"It turns out that the primary pathway by which grapefruit juice interfers with medications is by way of CYP3A4, an isoenzyme of the cytochrome P450 enzyme family, that is found in the small intestine. This cytochrome P450 family, incidentally, is the same one involved in the metabolism of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine (Prozac), and is, in fact, responsible for the metabolism of the majority of medications currently in use. As a result, when less of the medication is metabolized, more remains in the blood. In grapefruit juice, furanocoumarins are the main chemicals that are responsible for the toxic interaction.

The actual effect of the medication-grapefruit juice interaction is, though, quite variable among people, suggesting a genetic component. Furthermore, some patients are more susceptible to the effects because of preexisting (and particularly chronic) medical conditions such as hepatic insufficiency that predispose them to drug sensitivities and abnormal drug effects."

Hey team,

Little update time!

Well I'm still going pretty slowly but am now down to 41.7 mg Citalopram. Was on 45 mg ten weeks prior to now.

Ive been doing 1% cuts every week or two depending on how I'm feeling and how active my life has been with work, exercise, partying etc. If I've had a full on week and I'm physically exhausted ill hold an extra few days. If i get any symptoms after a drop, its usually on the fourth day.  Some drops i don't feel much at all. If i am having symptoms its generally tiredness. Sometimes anxiety pops up but its minor and manageable and disappears within a day or so generally. OCD type thoughts are often accompanied by the low, anxious mood and i do find them hard to get rid of. However they also disappear after a day or so. All in all things are going pretty well. The down days are not pleasant but i can get through them pretty easily. The good days are pretty nice! Im slowly starting to notice a bit more passion and creativity come back. Its subtle but definitely there.  Crazy! can't wait to get to a low dose! But I'm going to keep going slow for now.  Hoping these OCD symptoms will start to take a back seat as my dose gets lower. Other than that, not much to report on - I am planning on going to Australia for the winter, probably from May/June through until November/December. Looking forward to that.  Hope your all managing and for those of you struggling, keep your head up - It all gets better.

Hey guys, going to do an update soon but have a question. I had a bit of a meltdown about my tapering situation today. My taper is slow right now. Im managing pretty well, but how many damn years is this going to take? I guess my question is , CAN a taper speed be increased as your dose gets lower? If I kept going at this pace the entire taper, it would take forever to finish. Im currently dropping 10% every 3 - 4 month's, however this has been after recovering from a big crash last year, so im being extra cautious. Do you think its possible that as I get to a much lower dose I'll be capable of doing say 10% drops? The way I see it, right now a 10% drop would be 4mg, whereas at 10mg a 10% drop would be 1mg. I understand that this is the same percentage decrease but dropping 4mg is very different to dropping 1mg.. please correct me if im missing something, many thanks

Unfortunately, many members find that as they get lower then need to go slower by making smaller % drops.

Hi Nick

I was trying to figure out what your history with dose decreases has been in your signature. I got a bit confused (w/d cognitive symptoms grrrr!). Would you be willing to edit a bit so that it's mostly about the dates and dosages with only brief descriptions of your symptoms? Something like this:

2004 (aged 14) Started 60mg Citalopram in for apparent "OCD";

2009 - Went through rough patch; PDoc attempted 2 week cold turkey taper and switch to Mirtazapine - Massive withdrawal shock. 2 days after withdrawal C/T Mirtazapine - Back to 60mg Citalopam, Stabilized slowly over a few weeks.
2011 dropped to 55mg - Few months later dropped to 50mg
June 2015 - 50 mg Having weird random anxiety/feeling low and pretty sure its the drug; June 2015 drop to 45mg .
July 2015 drop to 40mg. strong reaction with waves every 3 weeks, hold for 3 months; Oct 2015 Back to 45mg; June 2016 - almost fully stabilized on current dose of 45mg.
November 2016 - Resumed taper. 1% decrease weekly. 44.5mg November 2016.
Currently Jan 2017 42.5 mg Citalopram

It's hard to know how you'll react to larger % dose decreases.  Have you been taking notes of your symptoms since you resumed your taper in Nov. 2016?  Symptoms are usually the best way to evaluate taper speed.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.
1997-1999 Effexor; 2002-2005 Effexor XR 37.5 mg linear taper, dropping same #beads/week with bad results

Cymbalta 60 mg 2012 - 2015; 2016: 20 mg to 7 mg exact doses and dates in this post; 2017: 6.3 mg to  0.0 mg  Aug. 12; details here

I have modified my signature Scally.  Chessie, i am doing a form of the BrassMonkey slide. Im roughly dropping 1% a week for 4 weeks then holding for a couple of weeks, so essentially I'm dropping about 5% every month and a half. I have been going quite slow since resuming and my symptoms have been quite minor. Some drops i feel nothing. Others i feel fatigued. I haven't really been keeping notes as there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern at the moment. My symptoms only seem to ramp up after over exertion and the rest of the time I'm mostly fine. Ive been in a wave for a day or two which i haven't had in a while, mostly feeling low, slight headache and fatigued. However i have recently surfed 11 days straight of up to 6-8 hours sometimes a day. As well as working 6 hours most days at a cafe. I know i have pushed myself too much physically, but i just can't help it. I live ON the beach - I feel fine most of the time, and its summer. And I'm addicted to surfing. To sit at home and watch the surf when its good is excruciating ! haha... however i need to certainly shorten the duration of time i spend in the water.   I almost feel as though the waves i get aren't direct results of the drops i do, but more a result of external circumstances. Before i resumed tapering - i was still having waves after over exerting myself, so in that regard, i don't believe there is a significant correlation between drops and waves.

Im due to drop another 1% but waiting a day to regain some energy after a busy two weeks. In a couple of weeks i should be on 40mg, which is two thirds of my original dose :)

One other query. Is it ok to continue on my slide even if im having a few minor symptoms/feeling low/anxious? Mild though. I would like to stick to 4 drops 1 week apart from each then hold for a few weeks

If you can tolerate the symptoms and function in your life, then making another decrease could work. Please don't let impatience or a calendar drive the pace, though. Let your symptoms dictate -- if they get worse, SLOW down.

It depends on how acute the symptoms are.  Even with the best taper there will be symptoms in the background which we refer to as WDnormal. The average level of feeling s####y with out the bigger swings that happen right after a drop. If the symptoms are acute then it's best to slow down and wait them out, but if it's WDnormal then just continue on as always.  Over time (months) the level of WDnormal slowly rises which is who you know you're getting better.

Hey people!

Should have updated but been busy with life, work, surfing road trips and what not.

Anyway as of a week ago I have been on 40mg down from my ORIGINAL dose of 60mg. Super stoked to be on the same amount as when I crashed last year but with pretty much a very normal life going on. Holding for a couple more weeks then I'll continue on down. I'll keep you all updated. Best wishes to you all.

Hi Nick--  Life always takes precedence over WD.  I'm so glad that things are going so well that you can forget about us.  Congratulations of getting stable and back to your original dose, well done.

That's really good to hear Nick.  Normal life is lovely!

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

Nearly at the end of my 3 week hold after 10% BrassMonkey slide reduction. Been feeling pretty good. However had a little wave yesterday, and still feeling remnants of it a bit today. Hit yesterday eve - Just fatigue, slightly low mood and a bit of frustration/anger at little things. I have had a full on few weeks though so its all just caught up on me AGAIN. Just reporting to say ill start the next drop within a few days. Also just to note that any symptoms that do arise i can't directly link to a drop in dose. I feel its more just an overall WD normal, and if i overdo it physically i get a few symptoms.

Hope your having a fabulous time Tom! Make sure to post some photos :)

Hmm this little wave has been interesting.. probably only 2/10 severity but still frustrating, especially seein its gone on for 5 days + ' at the tail end of it now, just feeling a bit lethargic. Mostly was a low mood, light anxiety and a bit of dp/dr plus some very vivid dreams! On day 2 and 3 the symptoms were coming and going by the minute, changing and easing then pulsing again.. was weird..any way, off too my parents for a day or two, and get some surfing in on the wild west coast this afternoon.

Little update.

in the middle of my second slide. On approx 39mg now, roughly dropping 1% a week, occasionally every ten days, depending on how i feel. At this rate ill be dropping about 10% every 2 1/2 months, with the holds in place. I don't really feel much directly from the drop, sometimes nothing at all on day 4 (which is when symptoms should arise)  . Instead i tend to feel a bit off about a week after a drop, BUT its not a pattern. I think its more from over exertion again haha... I have literally been surfing nearly every day, as well as working a few days a week at the surf school. It is an exhausting job, looking after kids all day, pushing them into waves, fighting the currents of the ocean. This has all come to an end now, with the school holidays at an end as well as a drop in temperature, surf school is officially done for the season.

I plan on working a cafe/barista job for a couple of months to save some money, and then venture over to sunny Queensland at the start of July. I have 3 of my best friends heading over too, so i don't want to miss out. I am a little nervous about it all, finding work and accommodation, whilst having some minor WD symptoms, but i know it'll work out fine. I plan on staying there for most of the winter and to continue tapering.

I have been living very remote for the past 6 months on my own, right on the beach - just me and two pet sheep. Its a good, simple life. However, i have begun to find myself being quite an introvert. Rather spending time by myself than hanging out with others. I have also become very skeptical about almost everything we have been raised to believe. I still enjoy others company but am VERY selective about whom i spend my time with. Including girls. I have had a fair amount of "love" interest, but cannot seem to commit to anything.  I have become extremely picky you could say haha...

As far as WD - well its been up and down. It's all liveable, I'm functional. It is NOTHING compared to my crash a year and a half ago. NOTHING. But its still unpleasant at times. Still no real physical symptoms, just neuro-emotions. They are hard to deal with at times, but they're still pretty minor in the scheme of things, and they only tend to last a few days at most. When I'm not in a "wave" (if you can call it that), I'm feeling pretty darn good. Relaxed, confident and rather content. I swear i can already notice the difference in me with a 6mg drop from 45mg to 39mg. I have recently got right back into my photography, something i just had little interest in over the past few years. Im enjoying just lying in bed listening to music as well as playing my guitar again. I get excited about watching movies too. The other day i just sat outside and watched one of our endemic birds, the Fantail fly around me. I was mesmerised by it. By its soul and its free-ness. It was really cool. These little improvements are only slight and they're very subtle. If i didn't think so much about them i wouldn't have even noticed. BUT they're improvements and I'm really looking forward to all the other improvements along this road. I've had days and weeks where i feel like WD is a distant memory, I'm feeling good and it feels like its all over. That's something i keep reminding myself of during the rocky patches.

Keep well people and keep on going !

Nick

On a second note, i am in confusion regarding what is going on in NZ with generic Citalopram. The brand i have been taking for a couple of year is Arrow. Apparently , according to the pharmacist, the generics are constantly changing, however he thinks he can still get me enough for the next couple of years (of Arrow). The expiry on the boxes i have at the moment are 5/2019 . I have a feeling that this batch is the last of the arrow brand available in NZ. So lets say i have Arrow available until the expiry date of May 2019. That gives me two years. With my rate of taper, that should put me at 15mg approx.

So i am a little concerned about having to change generics at some point. I have swapped generics a few times before, and had no issue with doing so. However, after seeing what happened to our dear friend Flowers, to say i am worried is an understatement. It just throws another aspect of concern into this already difficult experience. What are your guys thoughts on this? and what experiences have you had with switching brands? It'll be a couple of years out, but i want to be prepared.
