reachingforthestars: Citalopram WD

Recommended Posts

hi,

Does this happen to you too? in the mornings about one hour after i have taken my AD(4mg) i start feeling little shaky, my arms and legs jelly and my tongue feels numb. Evenings are much better. Does this happen to you too?  Could this be due to uneven amounts of ADs  in my body during the day? I have been tapering way too fast and don't know should i updose a bit. Sorry, my English is so clumsy.

Citalopram 40mg from 2003-2015

Jan 2015 started tapering first dropped to 35mgFeb 30mg, March 25mgApril 20mg, May 17,5mg, June 15mgJuly 12,5mg, Aug 12,5mg,

Sep 0mg for 5 days because of stomac flu and after I raised to 7,5mg. All the symptoms of acute WD shaking, diarrhea, vomiting, barely could walk ect. Still didn't realize that it wasn't only stomac flu but I was also going through WD.

Oct 2,5mg and crashed again badly and quickly raised to 4mg. It was then when I knew my symptoms were due to WD.

Then in November after a month holding on 4mg raised to 5mg due to muscle weakness and had a VERY BAD reaction to reinstatement: akathisia(lasted for one or two weeks), insomnia, anhedonia... Drop quicly back to 4mg, Dec 3mg

Jan 2016 2,6mg( in the middle of Jan after I had been on 2,6mg for a week I tried to updose to 2,8mg and immediately had bad reaction to it: akathisia for a day, andehonia got worse. The next day dropped back to 2,6mg), Feb 2,4mg( a new symptom PGAD lasted 24/7 for 2 months after that on and off), March 2,4mg, April 2,3mg, May 2,2mg, June 2,1mg, July 2,0mg( Pgad almost nonexisting, sleeping pretty good, still some anhedonia but there has been a lot of gradual progress), Aug 1,97mg-1,89mg, Sep 1,88mg-1,49mg, Oct 1,48mg- 1,70mg,

Hi reachingforthestars,

Welcome to SA.  I just wanted to let you know that your post has shown up.  I'm new here too so I'm not able to help.

Someone should be able to answer your question soon.

By the way it looks like you have done put everything in your signature, which is a great help.

Wishing you all the best,

Hi reachingforthestars,

I moved your post from the tapering section, to start your own introduction/update topic. You have been here on the site for a while, asking various question in other forums, but this is the best place to get help for your own particular situation. You can use this thread as your ongoing journal to track progress, write about symptoms, ask questions and communicate with the community, add to it whenever you want. Its a good idea to bookmark it or follow it, so its easy to find again.

From reading some of your other posts and looking at your signature, I would say you are having symptoms because you have been tapering much too fast.

We suggest reducing by no more than 10% of the current dose every 4 weeks, this reduces the risk of withdrawal symptoms arising. Please read through this which will explain why:

Why taper by 10% of my dosage?

And Tips for tapering off Celexa (citalopram)

What dose were you at when you last felt stable? Are your symptoms getting worse, better or staying about the same?

Please stop tapering for now, an updose may help. If you could answer the above questions, it will help us know what to suggest.

Petunia.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

I don't know if your AD is stimulating but Cymbalta use to do something similar to me...about 1 -2 hours after taking it I would get very anxious...it was way too stimulating for me.

Multiple failed attempts to quit/taper anti d/anti anxiety meds since 2008

June 17, 2016 began prozac bridge to get off of effexor xr, stopped effexor xr on June 24, 2016, could not tolerate prozac due to severe side effects so I had to stop it  Currently...300 mg ER of lithium, 1 mg of estradiol, 60 mg propranolol ER, Fish oil 2 x a day, Magnesium Glycinate,  zinc, vitamin c, vitamin d, NAC

Petunia! <3 Yes definitely i have been tapering too fast! I started tapering January 2015 as you can see from my signature. I never even knew there could be any physical withdrawal symptoms so i tapered only listening my feelings and i was mentally ok until this November. I did have physical symptoms during hole spring and summer but they were moderate and i thought i was hypothyroid because i was suddenly losing my muscle strength and needed more sleep than normally. Now i know those were due to W/D. In September i did something very stupid and made a big drop to 0mg for 5 days because of stomach flu and then updosed it to 7,5mg. For a week or two i was in a very weak condition bedridden vomiting shaking and my legs were jelly. Still i didn't realize that it wasn't only a stomach flu but also serious WD. After few weeks i was better and i was able to do 30 minute walks every day. i overestimated my condition and started tapering again first to 5mg and then to 2,5mg and crashed and quickly raised to 4mg. I have been pretty much house bound ever since, legs are so jelly all i can do is 5 minute walk and it takes all my strength i was sleeping all days and night but it was good relaxing sleep. I had also one week when i had haunting thoughts but mainly my symptoms were physical. Then i thought that maybe little updosing would help and last Monday i raised from 4mg to 5mg... very bad idea, i had the most horrible night i ever have had, insomnia restlessness, cannot sit still have to keep moving even though legs were jelly, pressure in my head, sharp pain in the back of my eyes, muscles twitching, cannot cry, cannot relax, cannot eat, cannot enjoy music, all the feelings numb... i dropped my dose back to 4mg and yesterday was little bit easier for me and last night i almost passed out normally. Now i have more symptoms than before and they are worse but im thankful that it looks like they have started to alleviate a bit.

This SA site is a lifesaver thank you!

Hi  Reachingforthestars,

It sounds like 4 mg , could be your  " sweet spot", ( for now). However,  you've been jumping around all over the place , so it's a bit hard to tell.  You raised  to 4mg , and have been good on that , for 24 hours.  If I were you, I would stay on that, and monitor your symptoms. Keep a note of your symptoms, but stay stable. and even for now.  No more sudden changes. Later, you can reassess, and start tapering.10 %       Many of us find these supplements helpful.

I hope your symptoms ease, a little and you can find some relief.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Welcome reaching ,   it's one thread per person in the Introductions section.

Sounds like you're on the right track and will do best staying on 4mg for a couple of months after this hiccup.

Magnesium is relaxing and well tolerated by most of us , see the thread at the top of the Symptoms section.

I had akathisia too , I know how dreadful it is.

Good to have you on board ,  Fresh

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Hi Reaching,

I joined your new topic with your original one, its one intro/update topic per member. You can use this thread as your ongoing journal to track progress, write about symptoms, ask questions and communicate with the community, add to it whenever you want. Its a good idea to bookmark it or follow it, so its easy to find again.

I will change the topic title for you.

If I were you I would hold at 4mg for a good long time to let your nervous system settle down. You have tapered too fast and now you are jumping around in dose which is making things worse.

See: The rule of 3KIS: Keep it simple. Keep it slow. Keep it stable.

In another thread you asked about akathisia and if you should make another drop to alleviate it. No, in your case, it looks like your akatthisia, if that's what you have, is being caused by withdrawal from tapering too fast, it should settle down once your nervous system stabilizes, this may take a while though, you will need to be patient.

See:  The Windows and Waves Pattern of Stabilization

As Fresh has mentioned, magnesium can be calming, also see:  Magnesium, Nature's Calcium Channel Blocker

Hi ,  I had it for a few months , but I didn't updose like you have.  Hopefully it will go away soon , now

that you've responded so quickly.

It affected my sleep and every waking ,moment , and surprisingly , it didn't kill me and I recovered.

That's a fantastic sign!    It seems to go away by being there for shorter periods , and being less intense.

If you've had some periods aka-free , to me that says it's on it's way out.  It may take a couple of weeks ,

but you'll get there.

Now it is morning here in Finland and last night was again almost normal to me i was able to relax and slept 7hours and when waking up no akathasia! Right now only my palms and feet are sweating but it could be due to my 4mg of ssri absorbing. Im becoming more hopeful and im so grateful of these few moments of peace and rest!

Here are my current and past WD symtoms:

I still have weakness, jelly legs so bad that i cannot walk more than 5minutes so im pretty much house bound but not any more bed ridden. Really would like to get my muscle strength back which i lost after too fast tapering from 7,5mg to 4mg (i was also few days on 2,5mg).

Week ago i started having a bunch of new symptoms due to an increase in my dose. Those symptoms were akathasia, constant panic, insomnia, pain in the back of my eyes, cold and hot flashes, sensitiveness to light, nausea also my crying spells changed to inability to cry and eat and concentrate on anything. Since then those symptoms have alleviated so that i have had two nights of almost normal sleep and one day which was akathasia-free for many hours. Sensitiveness to light and nausea has disappeared and the pain in my eyes is now very moderate and it's not all day there i can also listen to music a bit and my eating has improved so that i don't have to force myself to eat. I really hope that these new symptoms will fade away soon, luckily it was only 1mg increase in my dose which i immediately decreased back to previous dose so maybe the damage isn't that bad.

Hi  Reachingforthestars,

This all sounds very positive.  The fact that you are sleeping, and akathisia - free ( even for a short while )  is such a good sign.  Try and keep it stable, for a while.

AliG, thank you for your support!! I did get 6 hours (a bit restless)sleep last night, woke up two times in the middle of the night but was able to fall asleep again. In the morning i woke up with akathasia but it is at manageable level. Yesterday akathasia went away in the afternoon and in the evening i was relaxed and i was able to watch a movie.

Good morning! :) Yesterday in the afternoon and in the evening i was very relaxed and i was able to read a little bit a book. At night i passed out fairly quickly and slept 7 hours peacefully! :) I was even relaxed when i woke up. The nervousness came back about one hour after waking up with hands shaking, palms and feet sweating and the right side of the tongue numb and swollen. Legs are still jelly and i cannot walk more than 5-10 minutes but that is really a minor problem compared to insomnia and akathasia.

Hi Reachingforthestars,

That is pretty great !  You seem happier  :) . You're right, it's minor compared to insomnia and akathisia.  I hope your other symptoms improve in time, as well.

If you're careful with your taper, I'm sure they will .  I would hold for a good while.

 Hi Reachingforthestars,

Fantastic news !   Are you still on 4mg ?  Have you been taking fish oil and magnesium ? The weight gain is probably a result of improved appetite and water retention can be linked to salt intake.

I hope it all keeps on in a positive direction .  :)

AliG, Thanks for your reply! :)Yes, i'm on 4mg.

I have been taking magnesium and fish oil for many months now.

I was also wondering that could those longer walks make my body to retain water since i must have been losing muscle mass after been almost housebound for a month and a half.

nz11, Ops, yes, there was a mistake in my sig!

Yes, i have been stabilizing, i dont't have depression or anxiety, just some andehonia but not bad, i can cry and laugh now and watch tv but i have no interest in listening music yet, i'm little unattached to everything around me and cannot feel those semantic feelings that i used to feel before Christmas, no more akathisia and i can relax, my main debilitating symptoms are physical which are muscle weakness and tiredness and for that reason i cannot study or have a job...

Nov 0,65mg- current dose 0,5mg

  • 2 weeks later...

My muscle strength is coming back, i can walk stairs up to 5th floor and i can walk over 30 minutes in snow without jelly or tired legs. :) My sleeping has improved and i fall asleep normally. No water retention and no anxiety. Some occasional soreness in my eyes.

My dose now weights 0.025g and the hole tablet (of citalopram 20mg) weights 0.186g, so my current dose is 2.67mg. I have been wrong before about my dose and it was smaller than i thought, it was 3mg not 4mg. A week ago I dropped from 3mg to 2.67mg. Not yet new w/d symptoms but the earlier ones are alleviating.

Hi RFTS , you've continued to improve since you reinstated and I'm so pleased for you.

Please take it very slow.

You're still recovering from a big hiccup and your brain has become very used to the drugs in the last

13 years.

You've just decreased more than 10% and that's dicey. I'd bump it up rather than wait to see if it knocks you flat.

The aim of the game is to stay well.

Fresh, have i done my calculations wrong way? 10% from 3mg is 0.3mg so that the next dose should be 2.7mg and my dose is 2.67mg... 0,025g of the tablet contains 2.67mg of citalopram and 0,02511g contains 2,7mg of citalopram but i cannot measure below 0.001g. But you are right, i'm still healing from the shock so maybe i should take 5% drops in my case at first...

Your calculations are correct. Personally ,  I'd try 5% and see how you go.  It's not a race , it's a "what will keep me well and functioning" thing.

Did you know there are other members from Finland here?  Check out Catzilla's thread.  You may want to get in touch with your countryfolk.
