Hope4All
Hi...I have been on antidepressants on and off for about 18 years; initially prescribed for panic disorder. I am currently on Prozac 20mg and Xanax 0.25 - 0.5mg/ day. I have always heard that you should taper off the benzo first, but is there anything wrong with tapering off Prozac first? Also, because Prozac has such a long half-life, do I really need to do such a slow taper - 10% per month? At this point, I don't feel like the Prozac is helping me, and I am having odd headaches and pseudo-brain zaps (not quite the same but similar) that I can only think is from the medication (everything has been ruled out- I am healthy). Any input/ suggestions greatly appreciated !! Thanks. Currently on Prozac 20mg; have been for 6-7 years... other antidepressants before that...a few years on nothing. Currently on Klonopin 0.5mg for one month; switched from Xanax which I started in April, 2015. Tapered from 0.5mg 3x/day to 0.5mg once/day. Link to comment
AliG
Hi Hope , Welcome. You will find a lot of support and information here. There is no need to taper off the benzo first. In fact , tapering off the A/D first is preferable. http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2207-taking-multiple-psych-drugs-which-drug-to-taper-first/ . Tapering by 10 %, is the preferred method. It's easier on your nervous system , and will help minimize withdrawal symptoms. http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/1024-why-taper-by-10-of-my-dosage/ . It's likely the Prozac isn't agreeing with you. How long have you been on it ? Also, if you can fill in your signature, it will help. http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/893-please-put-your-withdrawal-history-in-your-signature/ Please let us know , if you have any other questions or concerns. This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality! "Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped." Dr Mosher. Me too! Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin.
