Shut up! And take your meds!" To this end, I have written this short "letter to the editor" which I intend to submit to local papers. Please feel free to copy and distribute this to your local papers, etc. You can even claim it as your own. Patty Duke, Advocate for Big Pharma, Not People In a 2008 speech sponsored by the drug company Astra Zeneca to the American Psychiatric Association, Patty Duke is quoted as saying “When I hear someone say, at one of my talks, ‘I don’t need the medication, I don’t take it,’ I tell them to ‘sit down, you are making a fool of yourself.’” (Anatomy of an Epidemic, Robert Whitaker). Wow! Harsh! She sounds more like an enemy of people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness than an advocate for them. With drug companies raking in billions every year, and thousands of people joining the ranks of the permanently disabled only AFTER being put psychotropic drugs (I ought to know I’m one of them), it’s clear who was helped by Ms. Duke’s advocacy – Big Pharma. My initial reaction to the announcement of her death was, did the illicit drug taking lead to the supposed bi-polar. Late last night I heard a fuller account of her life and they mentioned that her parents and their issues and that she was abuse by her manager/s. My opinion is that this in turn led to the illicit drugs which MAY have ended up with the possible misdiagnosis which I assume led to her taking ADs and/or APs. All in all a very sad life of a person who didn't receive the necessary non drug therapies. I know she just pasted I wonder if they will do an autopsy and see what damage the drugs did to her body. WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG Had a car accident in 85 Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89 Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above. One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking. According to Ms. Duke, the drugs saved her life and I doubt anyone in her circle who would call for an autopsy had any reason to doubt her. I always thought she was a great advocate too until I discovered the drug companies were supporting her to be one. You never know when family members are going to learn more and start requesting autopsies I told my family when I was really sick should I die ...demand an autopsy maybe in death we could learn what was wrong with me... I did not know about wd then. I think a lot of misinformation is still out on the normal channels but people are not bothering so much with the old normal channels any more they are learning other ways as they see thru it and resent the time wasting and intrusion so have an eye out to detect it.
