Traveling with your psychiatric drugs

MOD NOTE:

Find the name of your pills in any country

Sorry, didn't know where to post this. I'll be traveling in a few days and was wondering how should I go about carrying my pills on the plane. Since my pills are cut to specific dosages I have them all segregated into weekly pill boxes. I will also be bringing the actual prescription container that they originally came in with full uncut pills.

Does anyone think it will be an issue during the screening process? Thank you

Shouldn't be any different than carrying regular scripts.  They only care about liquids, it seems.

SG

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

I hope so SG. I would hate for them to pour out all my weighed out pills. That would be horrible.

I'd be inclined to take my scale and tablets with me and do the measuring where ever I am to eliminate all doubt, but that's just me :-)

They can always run the drug sniffing dogs by your pill case to make sure it's not dope :-)    You may be able to check with TSA in advance.  They do have a customer service link on their website.

I've traveled domestically with cut up pills and a liquid suspension.  I've never had any problem.  Since the liquid is oversized they inspect it - sometimes they put it through a sniffer device, but it has never been a problem.  I've never had them even care about the cut up bits in the pill carrier.

I also travel with a significant amount of supplements in a container that has compartments.  That has also never cause any concern.

I also do what SG suggests and take some whole pills and my pill cutter for back up.  The pill cutter goes in carry-on and has never been confiscated. But if you use an exacto knife or similar device, I would put that in checked luggage.  The TSA doesn't like blades.  I've had the little mini Swiss army knives confiscated before and those blades are an inch and half at most.

If you are traveling domestically it shouldn't be any problem.  If you are talking international travel, I cannot provide any guidance because so far I've only had to travel internationally once and that was to Canada.  I'm sure I had cut up bits that time and it wasn't a problem.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Karma and SG. Sounds like it would be a good idea for me to bring my scale just in case so that's what I'll do. I'd much rather be safe than sorry. I guess as long as I have the original prescription container it should help as far as raising any suspicion. I'll put my razor blade in my check in baggage so as to not cause any issues. As for my travels, i'll be traveling internationally to Asia.

As far as the dogs go, hopefully paxil doesn't raise any red flags.

I've traveled overseas with my paxil several times and had no trouble.  I always keep in in my carry-on so I won't loose it. I make up enough pills for the trip in advance and leave everything else at home. Scales and empty gel caps could raise questions.  Having the original prescription bottle may help but having altered or made up pills could raise questions.  Just don't say anything about it unless specifically asked. The dogs, if there even are any, are much more interested in other things than ADs.

Have a great trip.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Good tip Brass, I'll keep my mouth shut unless asked. I was also thinking about putting my scale in check in baggage just in case? Would that raise any flags or should that be ok?

Ok just called the customer service at TSA posted by SG and spoke with an agent and the cut up pills wont be an issue as long as I explain the situation if asked by a screener.

OK I'm much more relieved now. Thanks for all that helped! Appreciate it!

I travelled to Asia (South and Central) and Eastern Europe with drugs. And each time I was asked for original prescription. They also checked the number of pills I am taking with me (it has to be mentioned in the prescription).

1992 - Antidepressants, Antipsychotics and benzodiazepines in hospital for about 1,5 month, with PTSD diagnosed. Then I abruptly stopped taking pills. W/d for few months and then no symptoms for many years.

2013 – Doctor prescribes Paxil, Amitriptyline, Risperidone due to insomnia, anxiety and weight loss. Then it starts a long story about changing diagnosis and adding/changing meds. I started to taper in December 2014. Severe withdrawal symptoms for  4 months. Then the 1st window.

April 2015 – meds free. June, July – the first big window which lasted until mid-October. Then a wave again, but this time with new strange symptoms I’ve never had before.

Hi Karma,

I read you travelled a year ago and took the supplements with you.

Did you put the supplements in the carry-on luggage or the checked in luggage to avoid any issues?

I'll be travelling in a while and want to be sure.

My apologies, I didn’t get a notice on this. It may be too late, but I carry my supplements and meds in my carry on. I travel domestically. I am told traveling internationally may be a bit different.

If if I travel internationally I will carry a letter from my provider, carry meds in my carry on and pack supplements in my checked luggage except for what I need for the actual flight.
