Deadpool: Need help to recover from risperidone and Dayo OD 500 withdrawal symptoms

Deadpool

Recommended Posts

Hi all...... I am new here. Searched google 'how to recover from risperidone' and found this site. I don't know how things work here, but I am sharing my experience.
I was misdiagnosed with Bipolar disorder and took the medicine for 3 months. The details of the drugs are in my signature.
Its been almost two months since I quit the medicines cold turkey. I am now suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Sexual dysfunction, ie.. no sex drive which is driving me crazy. I watch porn, but not able to get excited now. I am deeply depressed. Suicidal thoughts are coming to me thinking about my life. I have just completed graduation in B.tech in engineering. I was not able to write the final exams well because of memory problems, no interest to study, which was during my medication period. Now i am thinking what I will become in life, I can't function properly as a human being. In the morning I feel like sleeping more. I feel tiredness while trying to become active after waking up. So after breakfast I lay in bed again. In the evenings I will become more active till I sleep.
Is this normal?
Will I be able to lead my normal life back? If so how much time will it take to recover?
Reply please........ I am in need of help.

Took RISPOND (RISPERIDONE) 1mg twice daily (morning and night) for 3 months along with Dayo OD 500 at night. Quit cold turkey of all meds in feb 29, 2016. Its been 4 months off the meds now!( as of 29 June, 2016)

Intense withdrawal effect. Not able to focus on something completely. Some memory problems. Passion for everything has died. Everything has to be done forcefully. No enjoyment in listening to a song or watching a movie. Everything seems pointless. Zero libido. Lost the desire and ability to fall in love. Emotions are withdrawn.

its been a while now, taking 2-3 meds in morning and evening. I'll update it tomorrow.

Hi Deadpool,  sorry that you are struggling after quitting the drugs.  Withdrawal is a nightmare but can be relieved by reinstating tiny doses of the drugs that you have quit.  Did your doctor do any tests to see if you would be ok with taking them together?  I put them into the interactions checker and this is what came up.

There are interactions between them but no major ones.

Lots of us here have been diagnosed bi-polar, usually after reacting to drugs, barely anyone is ever diagnosed BEFORE starting drugs!

Risperidone is the one that is likely to be causing the worst of the withdrawal, what dose were you taking?

Interactions between your selected drugs
Moderate promethazine  risperidone

Applies to: Phenergan (promethazine), risperidone

Using promethazine together with risperiDONE may increase side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, heat intolerance, flushing, decreased sweatinglb_icon1.png, difficulty urinating, abdominal cramping, constipation, irregular heartbeat, confusion, and memory problems. Side effects may be more likely to occur in the elderly or those with a debilitating condition. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Switch to professional interaction data

Moderate promethazine  divalproex sodium

Applies to: Phenergan (promethazine), divalproex sodium

Using promethazine together with divalproex sodium may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination.

Moderate risperidone  divalproex sodium

Applies to: risperidone, divalproex sodium

Using divalproex sodium together with risperiDONE can alter the effects divalproex sodium. This can cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and confusion. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take both medications. Avoid driving until you know how the medications will affect you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

My doctor didn't do any tests before prescribing me medicines. I went to him day before yesterday with my mother. He was compelling me to take the drugs and said you shouldn't stop taking it. He said there will be side effects but you should focus on curing the disease. When I told him about my sexual dysfunction problem, he said I am not married so then why worry? There are also medicines to cure that. He then prescribed me these but I didn't have them because of the side-effects caused. I am already damaged, can't take chances anymore.
1. Gressami 50 (Amisulpride tablets IP)

2. Dayo OD 250 (Divalproex  Prolonged release Tablets IP)
Right now, I believe I am suffering from low dopamine. I feel depressed and no excitement to do any stuff; even having food, I feel lazy.
Currently trying natual foods to increase dopamine level. Can the testosterone levels be also effected?

He has prescribed another antipsychotic and the antiepileptic. this will pass and you will get better but reinstating the risperdal at a tiny dose would take the edge off the withdrawal. Try not to worry about the sexual dysfunction because it will get better. If you worry and try to force yourself to feel things it will slow down your recovery. I have to stress that you are NOT LAZY, you are suffering withdrawal from these drugs and if you need to sleep then you should sleep. It is quite common for people to feel better in the evenings during withdrawal. You may find that you have windows and waves, where you feel bad for a time then feel better, this is your brain and nervous system recovering from the drugs.  Everything is affected by the drugs and withdrawal, they cause an imbalance but your body will heal and rebalance itself in time. Be careful with supplements as some can make things worse, always try a very small dose to begin with to see if there are any reactions.  I will find some links to topics for you to read. .

I have started taking L-Tyrosine supplements. Chances are that I am suffering from dopamine deficiency as the meds which I took lowers the functioning of dopamine receptors. So need to improve the balance again. Will keep informed, so far I am feeling better. Little energy have come up. I can sit on computer the whole day and do stuffs without much fatigue.

Its been almost 3 months and 2 weeks from withdrawing since I stopped the medicine cold turkey. Improvements in the cognitive ability. But still some short term memory problems. After doctor's checkup of blood test he told me i have to take iron supplements. But lack of enthusiasm and feeling no pleasure in doing activities and watching movies etc. Still no proper and sudden erection on seeing nude pics. My testosterone levels are lower than the lowest level. Need to consult the doctor after 2 weeks with the testosterone, TSH, antibodies blood test. Seeing from here, I can see huge improvement than last month. But still I feel I am not up to my old self which is making me sad. Hope one day i will recover from all this.

i'm recovering from risperdal myself. the dead libido is also driving me crazy, i've tried taking herbs for libido, still nothing. i'm 20 years old with dead libido and i'm worried that this will last forever.  have you checked your prolactin levels? i heard risperidone can cause high prolactin (when prolactin goes up, libido goes down). i just checked my prolactin levels and i'm waiting for the results to come in.  keep strong.

In March 2016 i suffered from a paranoia/schizophrenic episode which resulted in me taking risperidone/risperdal 3mg for about 3 weeks along with a couple 7mg long acting injections.  i had an intense withdrawal after stopping cold turkey and i have been off risperidone ever since then.

Its been 4 months since I quit risperdal cold turkey. 1 mg twice daily for 3 months. I am not my old self having passion for everything. Still need a little push to do everything. Feels lazy. No pleasure in activities like watching a movie, hearing a song, doing a hobby etc. No or zero libido. Hope is still there. Waiting for the miracle.

Hi all.. thought I would update my condition from the beginning.

I was a smart kid who was good in studies. I got admission in good college for architecture. I read holy books like bible and quran a lot and compare it to my life. I read some random verses and derive meaning from it with current life.

During my 3rd year, I had a love failure. Then I believed everyone was laughing at me. I again resorted to holy books and stopped talking with everyone. I believed I was the 'chosen one' and the devil was trying to harm me. I believed devil has the power to manipulate others talk and they will harm me. I even suspected my parents. It was pure delusions.

I was diagnosed as bipolar from there. I took the medicines believing that God would save me and nothing can harm me. I couldn't learn then and quit architecture for the reason i believed it was not actually my passion. It was all actually the medicines doing the work. I was all sleepy and couldn't study. I quit the architecture. But after few weeks I was completely bedridden and saliva was oozing out of my mouth, I was not able to chew food or even talk.

Then I was taken to another hospital and from there they said it was side effect of the medicine and they gave me an injection. I was cured from that state rapidly. They prescribed another class of medicines. Then from home I took the medicines for a while and stopped it completely. After a while I was back to my normal self again. I joined another college writing exams and getting good marks for engineering.

After a year while listening to a song, 'escape' meaning like word was in a song. I believed that was a message to me by God. I got out of the house and started wandering. Then they thought that the bipolar relapse has come and i was again taken to another doctor. I still didn't do the talking to the doctor. I was not being frank with him. I hid all my thoughts and just plainly lied to him. Took the medicines for a few months I was sleepy and all during those time.

Then since i knew i don't have bipolar. Its a strong feeling, I again quit drugs. And i was back to normal after a while. I could feel all the emotions and joy and thrill again.

Recently that feeling that I am the chosen one emerged again and i was hospitalised for 10 days with risperidone from there. But since i came back home, I feel no joy for chatting and decrease in libido. I continued the medication for 3 months. Rispond 1mg twice daily. then all my emotions and libido function and the sense of joy went away.

I have quit risperidone cold turkey since 4 months. Its been no improvement in the emotional and joy field so far. I recently went to a doctor and told my whole story being open to him. He said I am in my last stage and doesn't need medicines. He suggested me to engage in physical activity. I don't know what will happen.

Everything will happen as God wishes. Hope for the best. Still feel no joy from everything. I could feel nothing when my crush was near me when i was in college during the risperidone days. Its continuing till now.

Thanks for the read.

How are you now?

late July...lexapro 10 seroquel 25.....due to mild depression......adverse reaction, suicidal thoughts, hospitalization

August....felt that meds were ripping stomach apart....docs didn't believe me..upped meds to seroquel 125, lexapro 20, mirtazapine 30, olanzapine 20....stayed on these drugs unitl mid november......severe anhedonia all the time...mid novemeber 2016 , began taper.....very small windows of emotion...Christmas....off everything by Christmas day......last six weeks, cried and laughed on a number of occasions for first time since taking initial meds....8 occasions of strong emotion over 6 weeks in ealry 2016.......doubting recovery......

BIG WINDOW IN july 2017, felt incredible, lasted a month or so, felt close to recovered...window left, september to Chrimstas 17 was anhedonic hell.....Turn of the year, January 2018, some very strong days (a window) offering renewed hope

back to hell until late February 2018, strong 10 day window....followed by anhedonic wave for 7 months straight! not a flicker of normalcy

September 2018 ...incredible window...followed by three month wave.January 2019.... a strong window

window subsided, but new baseline was higher.....life since January 2019 ( 9 months and counting) has been far better. Complete anhedonia is gone!! God, I've tears writing that. I am far from recovered, but far from hell...to use a scale, if life is rated out of a hundred, I was about minus 50 for the majority of 2 years..I know feel about 30 per cent of self, experiences intermittent flickers of normal life regularly....My days have more quality and I am optimistic of recovery.

Hey,

I think you have a decent shot at making a recovery. I was on 1-3 mg risperdal for 2006-2009, went off, and made a full recovery.  However I had a psychotic break and went back on them in 2012, been at 3mg risperdal 200mg zoloft for years, which = 5 mg risperdal due to interaction with zoloft.  For 6 days I was on an additional 5mg zyprexa for a grand total equivalent of 8mg risperdal.  My brain has become numb and lifeless.  However, since you were on a small dose for a short time, and if you don't go back on the drugs, you too may make a full recovery like I did in 2010-2011.

Just don't make the mistake of doing hard drugs as that is what caused my psychotic break.  You should be thankful you're not me, as I now have constant tinnitus due to remeron withdrawal as well as being stuck on a big dose of risperdal.  Once you get on any drug, it's really hard to get off and doing so will result in horrible symptoms.

jan 2012: started 1 mg risperdal 50 mg zoloft | sep 2014: 2 mg risperdal 150 mg zoloft | jan 2016: 3 mg risperdal 200 mg zoloft | june - sept 2016: tapered to 1 mg risperdal 50 mg zoloft over 3 months.  reinstated 3 mg risperdal after insomnia.  still at 50 mg zoloft | oct 2016: went off zoloft | nov 2016: insomnia.  reinstated 3 mg risperdal, 200 mg zoloft, plus 15 mg remeron. | april 2017: 22.5 mg remeron.

dec 17 2019: 187.5 mg zoloft | dec 24 2019: 175 mg zoloft | apr 9 2020: 162.5 mg zoloft | may 11 2020: 150 mg zoloft | jan 7 2021: 137.5 mg zoloft | jan 27 2021: 125 mg zoloft | mar 10 2021: 112.5 mg zoloft | 5/26/21: 100 mg zoloft | 6/1/21: 112.5 mg zoloft | 7/29/22: missed whole dose zoloft | 2/3/23: 100 mg zoloft | 2/4/23: 112.5 mg zoloft

3/15/22: 20 mg remeron | 3/18/22: 22.5 mg remeron

current drugs: before bed - 3 mg risperdal, 22.5 mg remeron | morning - 112.5 mg zoloft

current supplements: before bed - 1 g NAC, 1 g lion's mane mushroom | morning - 1 g NAC, 7,500 mcg beta carotene

How is your libido now. I am facing the same issue. I have tapered and stopped a risperidone successfully 10days back with the doctors advice. I can't feel normally. How long will it take to recover from insomnia and sexual side effects.

Thanks for the reply @rupa

I have tapered to zero in December 25th. Still I am facing reduced libido and erection issues. I am not able to sleep properly.  Frequently getting up in between the sleep. I am worried about sexual dysfunction as many people are saying it can be permanent.
