It's probably not the drugs, then. Have you had him checked for Parkinson's?

The Psydoc cannot diagnose Parkinsons as two many drugs and he said although he is displaying some symptoms at times he is not sure whether it is the medication (Olanazpine suppresses the dopamine).  Hubby is now experiencing loss of bladder control.  Psydoc says hubby needs more dopamine and suggested trying a natural supplement Tyrosine.  He would prefer that than prescribing medication.  Thoughts please?

Its good he is thinking alternative of psyche drugs. There is no harm in going the way of tyrosine to boost dopamine.

If his diganosis is right and tyrosine works as it is presumed... Then it will bd of help.

We are reducing the Olanzapine slowly every four weeks.  Although his rigid facial features are decreasing, we are still experiencing huge problems and not sure if it is brain trying to adjust or what the heck is going on.  He use to have one good day and unsettled day but now we have every day in and out of unsettleness. Hubby is an hour like his old self and then his symptoms can come on and he knows that they are coming on (senses it) and then he can hardly talk, loss of voice, muscle spasms - sometimes like catatonic state.  It can be anything that sets it off!  He is also experiencing loss of bladder control in the mornings!   The Psydoc believes it the Dopamine and most probably the Seratonin has been upset and causing these problems.  Psydoc is very keen to NOT use prescription medication and is encouraging to use other ways - like he suggested trying coffee to see if that would work for him, also Tyrosine!  Hubby is coming up to three weeks since his last reduction with another week before we reduce again.  I am a bit nervous to reduce as I don't want the symptoms to increase.  The PsychDoc said continuing to take a drug that is causing conflict with him is not a good idea.  I would like to read if others have experienced anything similar please?  What is also complicating matters is he has had a head injury and so his brain was damaged before this!  It is very difficult for me, trying to deal with this situation.  Thank you.

Boomer, by how much are you reducing the olanzapine every 4 weeks?

It's good that his facial rigor is decreasing. Perhaps it was drug-induced Parkinsonism.

Will try this reduction at the end of the week.     I am feeling scared as the feeling that he hasn't being able to describe seems to be occurring more regularly and he is calling out to me for Help!  When this whatever it is takes holds - he can't talk and it is like he is having a seizure!  His eyes are dilated and he doesn't blink and it looks to me like he is having muscle spasms!  It is so frightening and frustrating not understanding what is going on!   He now has incontinence at night,

I have just read about the Hardys aminios, so I won't go there.  Can you advise what to give him instead of Omeprazole?  Also I quickly read about magnesium.  I got lost in all the posts but would like your advice about which magnesium to start with please?  Thank you in advance.

boomer, I am worried that he might have a medical condition.

What is he taking omeprazole for? If he's reacting to certain foods, such as dairy, you might eliminate those foods instead.

You need to gradually reduce the omeprazole over a month to go off it.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

The Omeprazole was for his reflux.  He is taking Fortisip as losing weight, so can't eliminate dairy!  I am sure he has developed a condition since using these drugs!  What about magnesium please?

not sure but the stomach certainly makes lots of loud gurgling noises and a sort of hiccups in the morning.  He had that problem with food getting stuck in the esophasgus and he is losing weight!

That's not necessarily reflux. Reflux is painful. You'll have to keep notes about when those symptoms happen. It could be he's reacting to food, or they could happen when he's hungry.

How about reducing the omeprazole by 25% and see if that's okay? He may not need it at all.

Boomer, you and I can't tell if his symptoms are from tapering or from whatever medical condition he has.

It's very, very hard when the person can't articulate what they're feeling so as to keep a detailed symptoms record.

At this point, your guess is as good as mine. I'm very sorry, I can't do a better job than your doctors. Please confer with your doctors about diagnosing potential Parkinson's, dementia, or other organic conditions. I would insist on minimal drugs.

Saw PsychDoc who has ordered an MRI - haven't had results yet.  He said he cannot determine what is wrong if the MRI doesn't show anything.  He said it could be the tapering of the Olanzapine causing havoc on a hypersensitive and brain injured brain, but until the Olanzapine is out of the system it is one big guess.  PsychDoc does not want to introduce anymore drugs.!

Well, this is somewhat of an improvement. If you keep notes, you might be able to capture a baseline symptom pattern for your husband.

Yep have nearly filled an exercise book full of notes.  But there is nothing that stands out at this stage.  As I mentioned PsychDoc wants medication reduced more quickly than .10mg per week.  I notice at the end of the second week of reducing your suggested .10mg that the symptoms aren't as severe.  I am not clear whether it is because we are down to 8.45mg (although Psydoc says this is still far too high) or whether it is the .10mg reduction.  Just wondering if we should test this (increase the reduction amount)?    I have a couple of concerns and that is - he is having difficulty swallowing food etc and he says some very unusual things at times!

Well we have been on a very rough journey since last here.  Around the beginning of July my husband was admitted to Hospital with Chronic Aspiration Pneumonia.  He had start to deteriorate slowly and then could no longer eat or drink and then it became acute.  While in hospital he had three bouts of aspiration pneumonia ending up in the High Dependency Unit.  We nearly lost him.  While in hospital they withdrew the Olanzapine and reduced the Effexor.  He was delirious, in a state of catatonia with extremely low blood pressure and sweating.  He has no memory of this.  He was in hospital for over two months.  There was controversy over his diagnosis between the medical professionals as he is such a complicated case but a scan revealed low dopamine.  There is still questions over his diagnosis but they have given him Lewy Body Dementia!  My question is - do you know if there is any research that shows that Olanzapine or Effexor XR could have set this in motion.  Remembering that he already had a damaged brain (TBI).  We are meeting with a Neurologist and I am wanting to gather information for that meeting please?  He has improved but his cognitive function is impaired and he is still alittle stiff in the limbs but he is not as aggitated and anxious like he was previously!  Thanks for any help.

I don't know of any research attributing development of Lewy Body Dementia to olanzapine or Effexor. There are studies of the use of the drugs in nursing homes, you might look for those.

If he's calmer without the drugs, that says enough, doesn't it?

If I were you, I'd get a second opinion regarding Lewy Body Dementia and this "low dopamine" finding.

Yes he is more calmer without the Olanzapine but he does get aggitated but not acutely.  The reason for being aggitated or anxious is  because his brain is not functioning.  Needs supervision and prompting so he is not back to where he was before he reduced the Effexor!

Thanks
