Boomer, so glad you popped in to let us know how things are.  I've been thinking of you both from time to time, and hoping you were getting through things okay.  I can't imagine how awful that whole process was, and I'm relieved you have your man back home again.  Time now to rest and recover, and to build the both of you up.  Lots of gentleness and care for each of you.

Hugs,

Karen

Thanks Karen

I just want to provide an update.  My husband is doing well but he said he feels like the drugs are making him zombie like and his body feels heavy and tired.  He said it feels like the Olanzapine is causing this.  He wondered if he could reduce the Olanzapine  slowly down to 10mg so he is not so drugged up but  will continue to stay on 10mg as it has increased his appetite.  Advice please?

How long has he been on the 20mg olanzapine?  My initial thought is that further stabilising would be better, before making any further moves.  He's been through so much lately.  Not that you need anybody to tell you that :(.

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 December - Now on 5 micro-beads Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops. Symptoms begin to increase.

2024 April - Updosed to 6 microbeads - immediate increase in symptoms for 4 days. Decreased to 5 microbeads.

Yeah, I'd hold out for further stabilising if at all possible.  You'll know better than me, being right there - your intuition is probably pretty good after all you guys have been through lately.  I hope you are shoring up a little.

Hope everything is ok.

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

Hello NZ11 - Yes husband has stabilised and has returned to limited part time work.  The Olanzapine is making him very tired although he manages to get through the day but sleeps from 9pm until 8am even later if not woken.  He is pushing through and exercising.  His appetite is huge and he has gained 6kg in a month (which is a good thing at the present).  The Psych doc does not like Olanzapine and wants to reduce him slowly in a couple of weeks time.  He wanted hubby to stablise before doing anything. I will research tapering Olanzapine so we do not have the same problems as last time.  perhaps you could provide a link.  Thanks.

Hi everyone, Just wanted to update you on my husbands progress.  He has stablised, is smiling and is so much better that he has returned to work part time.  The main issue he has is tiredness and an insatiable appetite.  The Psych doc wants to reduce him down from the Olanzapine, as I said in the last post, we will see what he means by reducing slowly in our next appointment which is in a couple of weeks time.

Your husband is improving? That's very good news, Boomer.

Yes it is very good news and he has improved considerably.  The Olanzapine is causing fatigue and his arms and legs feel like lead.  Psych doc wants to reduce slowly but I will follow your guidelines not the Psych doc if different!  Thanks for your support.

Boomer your husband is very lucky to have you.

I have a question the doctor you were trying to see who treated your husband in the past is this the doctor you are referring to when you say he wants him off the drugs or are you talking about the hosp doc from the psych ward?

In my humble opinion it is always best to get an opinion from a doctor who knew your husband when he was fully functional if possible it may be just me but I find a doctor who knew you before the damage by psych drugs has a much better understanding of who you are and that often in my opinion changes ideas of how to treat you.

When I seen doctors once I was in in trouble with the psych drugs all they seen was me at my worst they were not holding out looking for a person I really am before the damage as they did not know that person existed for all they knew I was always as I presented to them a complete and utter mess.

If you have not sought out the old doc who knew your husband before I think it may make a big difference as this has been my experience.

I am glad things have improved some and wish you and your husband peace.

Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

One more thought there was a thread here at SA at one point that told of the dose of medication that was mostly just wasted as the body could not take any more of the drug in the neurons were saturated at a certain point since his does of Effexor is so high now I wonder if it would make any sense to look at that now in preparedness for the future...

I am relying on the mods here to know the thread I am talking about and present it to you for your perusal.

Husband is stable. Husband mucked up his drugs when he came out of hospital but he has and is stable.   Psych Doc wanted to reduce Olanzapine but his method was by reducing  20mg to 17.5mg.  My husband has returned to work and wants to retain some stability so said we will not reduce at this stage.  My husband and I have decided we will reduce the Olanzapine but not how the Psych doc wants to do it (we haven't told the Psyc doc this). Is it better to cut the Olanzapine or use scales?  I realise their is a coating on this drug and I know I had difficulty cutting it previously.  Any thoughts on this please?  Thanks

Hi Boomer,

I have highlighted the information in GREEN below from Tips for tapering off olanzapine (Zyprexa):

(Note the caution in RED about using within 7 days.)

Using tablets to taper
Since olanzapine comes in many dosages, at least initially, tapering can take place using tablets and splitting them. Plan your taper and, via prescription, convert any dosage to some number of lower-dosage tablets.

Zyprexa tablets can be safely split, according to http://ps.psychiatry...articleID=84368

patients should be cautioned that because of the coating of Zyprexa, split tablets must be used within seven days.

Hi Boomer any update?

Thought for the day: Lets stand up, and let’s speak out , together. G Olsen

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

Recovering paxil addict

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Hi NZ11 - Thanks for your concern.  Awaiting for scales to arrive from the US. We have a meeting with PDoc at end of month when we know he wants to reduce 20mg of Olanzapine at the 2.5mg rate but we are going to say no to that and will reduce slowly at 10%!  Husband is stable and now working four half days per week.  Should start tapering around beginning of October.

Thank you

Healy 2015

Hubby on 20mg Olanzapine and need to taper very slowly.  Just thinking would it be correct to start this taper with a 15mg tablet and two 2.5mg tablets = 20mg  Then on the first taper cut one of the 2.5mg tablets in half = 18.75 hold for a month.  Second month if stable then reduce to 17.5mg.  Third month cut 2.5mg in half reducing to 16.25mg.  Fourth month down to 15mg and so on until we reach 11.25mg where the cuts will become smaller than the 1.25?

Hi Boomer, about 17 topics below this one there is a thread on tapering zyprexa/olanzapine

Medicine History

June 2011 I was put on 10 mg Olanzapine. I stayed on that for 7 months then went down to 5 mg for 3 months and then went down to 2.5mg and slowly went down to less than .3 every few days. I have tried to come off 4 times, each time getting down to less than .3 before having to go back on at 5mg or 2.5mg. I would cut by 50% each taper. From Jan 2015 to June 2015 I reduced from about 5mg to .3 mg. This last time I went on 2.5 mg last June 2015 until July 2, 2016. July 3, 2016 I went down to 1.25mg - withdrawal hit. Up dosed to liquid 2 mg July 23, 2016.

Medicine Current

2 mg Olanzapine as of July 23, 2016

Supplements

Omega 3 1000mg, Vitamin E 400 UI, Vitamin C 1000 mg Time Released, 200 mg Magnesium Bisglycinate, Multi Probiotic, .25 mg melatonin for 3-5 days as needed

Hi ChessieCat - I have read the information but I just wanted confirmation that I have calculated the taper correctly by utilising a 2.5mg tab and cutting it in half each time until we reach 11.25 where we will then have to make smaller cuts.

Hi Boomer,

New here and from NZ. Wondering how your husband is going.

I am currently supporting my wife through efexor xr and seroquel cold turkey withdrawal. 5 weeks and counting.

I read earlier about Olanzapine making him like a zombie, my wife was given 2.5mg a few weeks into withdrawal to try stop her negative thinking and help sleep. She took it for 9 days and put on 4-5kg, always drowsy, zombie like and aching body. She stopped that cold turkey as well.

She is also not herself and currently experiency some "mild psychosis" as I put it.

Just thought id touch base with a fellow kiwi

Supporting my wife through Effexor XR withdrawal

-Oct 2015: 112.5mg Effexor XR in morning for anxiety, 25mg Seroquol at night for sleep

-March-August 2016: Her life falls apart, paranoia, insomnia, weight loss, quit her job etc

-Sept 2nd 2016: Cold Turkey stopped Effexor and Seroquol

-Prescribed 2.5mg Olanazapine for sleep and mood stabilisation started taking after 3 weeks withdrawal

-Currently past most physical withdrawals, still low energy, still aches, but no brain zaps or dizzyness

-Mental state is concerning, hates everyone, tried to annull marriage, wants to move away and start a new life

-Oct 2016, beginning to see some improvement, still on 2.5mg Olanzapine, started fish oil and magnesium

-Olanzapine stopped after 9 days due to constant hunger, aches, and drowsiness

-5-htp added to supps alongside Fish Oil and Magnesium, sleeping 8hours naturally now 5 weeks post efexor and seroquol, 1 week post olanzapine. Still days of "psychosis" like symptoms, irritable, angry, apathetic etc

Hi Everyone - Husband is still stable after 2 weeks of having tapered 1.25mg Olanzapine.  We were going to taper monthly but I have reread the tapering tips and it says fortnightly.  Just wondering whether we should taper monthly or try perhaps three weekly?  Fortnightly sounds too quick.  Thoughts please?

Hi Boomer

I think the word was 'few' not 'two'.

Maybe just go with three as a minumum hold

Anyway if wdl symptoms arise you will now you are going to fast.

Glad everything is currently going well.

Thank you

Me too!

Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Hi NZ11

This is what was written in the taper tips

"To minimize the risk of withdrawal symptoms, we recommend a conservative taper of 10% from the previous dosage every few weeks. The amount of the decrease keeps getting smaller. Some people find they can go faster and some people find they have to go slower -- they can only tolerate decreases of a fraction of a milligram at a time."

We are tapering 6.25% at the moment.

Very sad news about the mental health situation in NZ?

Thanks Boomer
