Also, what is going on with this hearing loss/constant rumbling in one ear? Then in my other ear I'm super sensitive.

Quick rundown of med changes. Originally put on Effexor in High School. Probably 2002? Got up to 300mg. In 2009 was able to successfully taper off Effexor with no real problems. Went back on 4 months later after a very bad depressive episode. 2010 Started back on 37.5mg Effexor and did wonderfully. Until 2016.

Ear symptoms are fairly common.  I get them a lot since being in w/d.  Sometimes ringing, sometimes a loud ocean-roaring sound, sometimes a blocked feeling.  Often more at night, but then sometimes in the day too.

It's good you've noted your dose inconsistencies - just getting that settled can make quite a difference.  I'd suggest doing that for a week or two before making other decisions.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 Now on 7 micro-beads of Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all. I've been doing better. I've been taking 12 beads of Effexor (11mg approximately) and seem to be stabilizing. However I'm super tired! I'm constantly drinking coffee during the day to be awake but then when I try to sleep (even when I don't drink caffeine) I never feel rested. I had to take two weeks off of work to get back on track also. I'm just wondering if I should stay put on my Effexor dose or wait until the horrible fatigue eases up. It's like a double edged sword: I'm tired but can't feel rested after sleeping! Yuck.

I guess I do have pretty intense anxiety some days too. Today in trying to reel my anxiety in.

I'd vote for getting more settled before making further reductions.  I have extreme tiredness too.  It's always been there since I've been in w/d from effexor, but lately it got ridiculously awful.  Turns out my iron levels are dropping through the floor.  I got some supplements and it is improving somewhat, and I also got some nettle tea to have as a daily tonic.

So - different causes for everyone obviously, but how are your iron levels?  And one more thought - how does caffeine impact on your anxiety?

So glad to hear you've been doing better overall.

Ok. I'm willing to stay at this dose for however long it takes for my brain to catch up. I'm definitely noticing more symptoms when I get stressed out. My brain feels fuzzy, my vision gets hard to focus and I feel weird tingling sensations on/throughout my head. Not exactly brain zaps but a little similar to them. I've tried restorative yoga and meditation to calm myself and haven't noticed a whole lot of improvement. However, I plan to continue both practices. Something weird I have noticed is that if I look at something far away I can feel my eyes jumping back and forth, almost as if they are not speaking to each other or cannot decide which one is dominant to focus. Only distances though. Up close that is not a problem.

Eyes jumping/not staying in conjunction, along with the hearing (Also, what is going on with this hearing loss/constant rumbling in one ear? Then in my other ear I'm super sensitive. ), is something I'm familiar with.

The best way to explain it all- is that since our 'brain' (s) are in charge of keeping everything running- it's not always going to do smoothly on the best of days.  And for those of us who have 'mucked about' with one of our brain's operating system (neurotransmitters) it's going to operate very rough for a while.

As to the ear sounds.  One ear- hearing loss/constant rumbling- and the other ear- super sensitive...; What the brain does for hearing- it simultaneously helps us hear sounds and keeps us from hearing them as well.  In a smoother running brain- we have a bit of control over such: being able to carry on a conversation in a room filled with people talking. Yet somehow in that situation- we can 'tune out' conversations we're not engaged in.  That, is our brain doing it's job well.  It can 'mute' non-relevant talk. It's a fine balance for it's 'mute' ability.

That control is out of whack (temporarily). Which is why in one ear you get hearing loss- it's very muted. Yet in the other ear- the mute is almost completely turned off- thus your 'super' hearing. As to the rumble- our brains will often insist on hearing something that isn't there if it's not getting any input.  Consider it the 'White Noise' in the daily background that for some reason your brain has decided it needs to amplify.

Rather extensive explanation. But in time your brain will get a better control over it's muting ability.

As to the eyes- another bit of control the brain is having a problem with. It, like the mute, will eventually get better.

Oh my goodness. In now have yet another new symptom: I can feel the pulsating in my head with each heartbeat. It is very annoying but I am trying to ignore it! My left ear has also been popping off and on and now I have nausea and diarrhea. I'm confused because I have not really had any of these symptoms up until now. Ugh yet another set of symptoms to get through.

Also, I attempted to try hydroxyzine for anxiety yesterday and I slept for 14 hours! Now I continue to feel drugged and lethargic, most likely as a side effect from that. Another weird symptom I'm developing is jaw rigidity. I am so very frusterated because I was feeling pretty decent there for a week (while I wasn't working and had very low stress levels) to right back at having symptoms that are effecting my daily life. I guess since I made no changes in my meds or supplements I know it's related to stress. Did I already mention this in another post? Lord my brain Is not working well today. Can't wait for these symptoms to pass.

Hi, Nicki.

After reading your last two posts, I placed hydroxyzine and Effexor in the drug interaction checker and it's showing a "moderate" interaction, as listed below.

The fact that you experienced nausea, which is something hydroxyzine is supposed to treat, makes me wonder if it didn't go paradoxical. You may be trading anxiety for a whole list of other symptoms.

https://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=1303-0,2296-1524

Moderate

  hydroxyzine  venlafaxine

Applies to: hydroxyzine, Effexor (venlafaxine)

Using hydroxyzine together with venlafaxine may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Are there other ways of handling anxiety that may help? I use guided meditations and mindfulness techniques. There's also walking, gentle yoga, listening to quiet music.

When I'm stressed, sometimes just getting up and taking a walk around the block helps. If I'm at work, I get up and go to the watercolor for a drink or go to the restroom just to get away and re-group.

This is a good thread that uses the phrase "change the channel" to break negative thinking patterns:

I get progressively worse throughout the workweek, too. The fatigue factor multiplies as the days go on.

One thing I found was during really intense waves, it helps to take a couple of Wednesdays off a month. Having that day off in the middle of the week really gives me a chance to re-charge.

So if you have some leave time, that might be something to consider. And some people find they can work at home one or two days a week. I don't have that option, but for those that do, they say it really helps.

Having another horrible day. My chest is heavy with anxiety, I have brain zapping and dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, an overall feeling of dread like the walls are going to cave in on me. Trying to make it through work but this is awful! I'm guessing I don't need to mess with the meds, just ride it out? i'm sorry you're having such a rough wave, Nicki.  I think you're system is still trying to stabilize.  Since you reinstated 12 beads have you been keeping daily records of your symptom pattern?  With the prozac bridge thrown in the works, I think you may have to hang ten on this wave and give your system more time to sort out what it is going to do with the reinstatement dose.

Big Hugs to You!

SG

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

SG, I felt great for about a week after I reinstated 12 beads. Not perfect but a hell of a lot better than when I tried that Prozac. I'm lucky I didn't jump out of a window on Prozac. So after that fairly decent week ( my main complaint was fatigue) I started back to work the following Monday. It seemed as the week went on my symptoms became more intense, although manageable. However, after a stressful Friday (my human resources messed up my insurance I had so desperately waited 2 months for!), having some brewskis on Saturday and trying that hydroxyzine on Sunday I'm a wreck. However, a little bit through the day my anxiety broke thank god. I felt like someone was attempting to rip my sternum out. Going to see a therapist finally tonight since I finally have insurance again! The thing with all of this is there's always something wrong with me. I'm either tired or anxious or don't feel right, dizzy or feel like my jaw is about to break from being so rigid. I wish for one day I could just breathe and feel normal. This is exhausting. But I keep remembering that I a) have no choice and am basically stuck doing this as I've tried different meds and tried going up and down on the dose and B) want to have healthy children. So I guess I'll keep trying to move forward, even if I continue to fall a few times.

Quick rundown of med changes. Originally put on Effexor in High School. Probably 2002? Got up to 300mg. In 2009 was able to successfully taper off Effexor with no real problems. Thanks for sharing that.  I would say that the reinstatement is working but your nervous system is super sensitized and going back to work, the brewski and hydroxyzine were stressors that set your system wobbling again.   I would say for sure it is time to be very cautious about adding anything to your system other than your RI dose.  So, alcohol, caffeine, OTC meds, etc. are probably best avoided.  Mindfulness meditation to help de-stress your system would be a good idea.

Once you are good and stable, you'll feel "withdrawal normal" and be able to live your life, albeit carefully.  By that I mean protect yourself from stressors, go easy.  Rest.  Allow yourself down time.  You can then carefully taper and still feel good.  You may have to start your taper more slowly, like 5% the first month, just to be sure it is doable without rocking the boat too much off the bat.

This is doable :-)

How long does it take to stabilize? Like am I going to be ok in 6 months? I'm willing to not make any changes if needed. This is crazy. And I realize that there's no known answer for each individual person but I really just want to know what's the general trend. I guess I'm trending up because I finally figured out that all the psych meds were giving me awful problems and decided to stop them but I also have a life to live. I'm currently a hostage to my withdrawal. Oh, also saw a therapist last night. I could tell that she really didn't seem to believe me that my symptoms were Effexor withdrawal. She continued to ask me if I was sure all my labs were normal and nothing else was going on. I assured her that this was indeed Effexor withdrawal. I really just wanted to flip her the bird and leave but I didn't. I continued to explain to her all the painstaking things j have attempted to feel better. Vitamins, yoga, meditation, no gluten, no caffeine. If you told me I had to walk around on my hands for a week to feel better I'd learn how to do it. So, in the end I'm not sure if she believed me. I even told her about this website and she thought it wasn't a good idea to get information from the Internet. Whelllll no one else is educated on withdrawal!!! Ugh so frustrating! At least my primary doc believed me and has seen this before in previous patients. She said if it begins to interfere with my daily life then we have a problem. Welp, it's interfered a ton but I refuse to try any other meds. I'm sure that's what everyone wants me to do (except my loved ones that have seen me on other meds). Just a wake up call to everyone! Those magic pills are soooo dangerous. Sorry I just had to rant a little today!

Nicki -- It is *likely* but not 100% certain that you will feel somewhat better in 6 months time. No one can predict how long a wave will last or how long you'll be dealing with withdrawal symptoms before they resolve.

Just got a call from my therapist. The psychiatrist wants to see me at the office because she claims she can make me feel better. Pretty sure she would just want to give me another med but no thank you!! I'm willing to go speak with her ( which will be in a month) but I really think I'm going to feel a lot better by then, I hope. I'm thinking she wants to give me something to work on norepinephrine. Really not willing to take a chance at becoming super destabilized again!

Nicki. If you can stay true to you then that will be a huge leap forward.  Educate yourself , and then tell your supposed doctor what you want. Usually , they are clueless and it is up to you to tell them what you want . Stick to your course.

For the last few days my brain fog has been much much better but I have dizziness and weird tingling sensations on my head! Its like I used a tingling shampoo but more intense haha. Also my jaw and face seems tense and rigid. Oh yes, and the anxiety. That comes and goes like waves. Such odd symptoms. They definitely get exacerbated when I get stressed and/or tired. However I was exhausted this morning and really had no big symptoms! It really gets me through now knowing that they won't last. Just two weeks ago I was feeling much better! So I know it's possible. Also, I'm thinking that not messing with my doses of ANYTHING is contributing to my little bit of success. Hopefully I'll continue to feel more normal!

Hi, Nicki. That's a very hopeful post!

If the jaw and face tension lead to grinding your teeth, you may want to look into getting a nightguard. I've been using one and it really does help. It probably saved my teeth during my benzo withdrawal.

Sending healing vibes your way. I hope you keep doing well.

Is there anything I can do to ease the tension? It's really uncomfortable and oftentimes leads to a headache. And whenever I get the tension in my jaw and face I notice by brain begins to feel more stressed and on edge. So it's all probably anxiety. Ugh.

Sleeping with a nightguard may help, especially if it's tension from grinding your teeth that's causing the problem. You can get a cheaper nightguard from the drug store before investing in a more expensive one made by your dentist.

Are you able to use magnesium or epsom salt baths? That can sometimes help with tension overall, not just in the jaw.

Deep breathing also helps.

For jaw tension issues it's worth having a read about TMJ.  When mine was at it's worst, I found exercises on you-tube for relaxing my jaw.  I still use them, as they really helped to reduce it from it's worst state, and now they seem to help me relax when I feel it creeping back in.

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

Hi, Nicki.

You said you haven't changed anything in 2 weeks, but the last Effexor change in your signature is June 16, which is more than 3 weeks ago. Are you still at 12 beads (11mg)?

Also, you may still be getting a ripple effect from the hydroxyzine use just a week ago. It can take awhile for the CNS to sort itself out.

Sorry yes I guess it was about 3 weeks ago. I am still at 12 beads (11mg) but am not doing well by any means. I feel as if the withdrawal is getting worse. I used to be able to still get through the day but now am having difficulties even eating. I honesty think I felt a little better without the Effexor than I do right now (I went off of it for about 1 month). Not sure what to do! I also think I felt better at 18mg (which was before the horrible Prozac bridge idea). So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Thinking maybe I need to either go up or down one bead?

I'm not sure. I'm thinking it still may be the effects of the hydroxyzine.

I'll ask the other mods to weigh in though, just in case they see something I'm missing.

Until 2016.

Update. I took one extra bead. I will see how this goes. I know it didn't take long for me to change my mind.
