Have struggled the last week, I started doing some cbt to help with my ocd/ anxiety which is difficult when you are depressed, but this got me out of the hole in the past and I think it will do so again, so I am going back to basics, so my days are full of cbt mindfullness and I got a new sad light, so I just got to give it time. And when the weather gets better here and my anxiety dips my mood should lift, I am going to see my doctor next week I will ask to refer me to a cbt/behavioral specialist. Its the only way to get my ocd back under control, thats the latest from me, I am surviving just about, but still fighting the good fight.

DD. Sorry you're struggling. How are you finding the CBT ?  Is the light helping ? Are you taking vitamin D ? Is there any sun ?

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Very little sun, gets bright around about 8 30 and dark at 4 and if its cloudy very little sun. The cbt is good but very hard, it involves exposing yourself to your fears and sitting and not reacting, its hard to do when depressed, but it worked for me in the past. Only started using the light today, so I will tell you in a week.

I found CBT to be ineffectual  in W/D , but that's just me . How are you finding it ?

I have been depressed for the last number of weeks its very hard to keep going, I am up with my doc Wednesday I am hoping he can give me some guidance my ocd is as bad as it has been in a number of years. Trying to do my cbt to fight it off its so hard when your mood is low, I know I will naturally pick up in the spring which is now 2 months away. I am not avoiding anything and facing my anxiety head on, its the only way, my ocd is telling me to take to the bed, so I am going to fight.

Sounds tough.  Hope you will feel better soon.  I reckon you might do.

This is a trough for those of us who look to the natural world for encouragement.  Home comforts regarded as "normal", now, like central heating, double/triple glazing, plenty of fuel, food and clothing, civilisation, have all conspired to make us lose touch with the natural world.

The winter solstice (shortest day) will be with us in a couple of days.  The sun only gets 10 degrees above the horizon here at this time of year and, in our maritime climate, plenty of cloud, mist and fog can make it the dreariest of times.  As does the urge for everyone to be forced into celebration mode!

Long ago, everyone looked to this annual event when the sun starts to ascend the sky, slowly but surely, as it had done for millennia.

The "roaring westerlies" are returning in a couple of days, too. At least the sky changes minute by minute then as the gales force the clouds to get a move on, and blow holes in them at times.

Remember, too, that by mid-February, the sun will be noticeably higher and, normally, the birds start thinking about nest-building and love is in the air for them.

Hang in there, dowdaller!

Hello DD

I have been reading your thread and think you have done amazingly well. You have developed coping strategies and are really doing your best.

This time of year can be very hard as Peng says. We are going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark and everybody is supposed to be happy! I am living in a warm country but we have had a lot of rain and dreary days this winter already. Yesterday was one of them and although we know it won't be long before the sun comes out again it still makes us miserable and I had a bad day yesterday with low mood.

I am always glad when we get to January!

Hi, dowdaller.

Just a quick question - does the sad light ramp up any feelings of anxiety for you? I've had that problem, along with vision issues, so I haven't been able to use my light box for the past few years, at least not for more than a few minutes.

Wish I had some better advice than to simply hang in there, but you are doing all of the non-drug coping techniques and getting through it day by day.

I hope the ocd therapy is effective and you get some relief soon.

The sad light doesnt really seem to make me anxious, I dont know how effective it is I have found it easier to get off to sleep, and I am not waking up as much. But this could be down to other factors. I suffer with the p ocd which has a lot of protectionistic traits, so I am probably expecting too much. But its hard when you were feeling half normal to just start punching in days again in survival mode.

He is psychiatrist he is the foremost guy on ocd and anxiety disorders in ireland. He works out of a hospital that runs an ocd programme etc, he didnt put me on any meds and took me off them, so I trust him in the sense that he knows my condition and he introduced me to the non medicinal coping techniques like mindfulness and cbt, he wont force me into anything, but he can refer to a good therapist or put me on a programme as an out patient, he may suggest going back on meds I wont be doing this unless I dont improve over a prolonged period of time or have no choice.

Is it the same Dr that helped you get off all your meds?

You have done a lot of hard work to get where you are. How does the Dr know it will help you - it make may you feel worse.

Would the Dr not help you to carry on using your CBT etc to get you through this.

OOOOH NOOOOOO!It sounds like you weren't expecting that?!

Is it the same Dr that helped you get off all your meds?

You have done a lot of hard work to get where you are. How does the Dr know it will help you - it make may you feel worse.

Would the Dr not help you to carry on using your CBT etc to get you through this.

Yes the same doc, he said that if my mood didn't lift my Ocd would get worse, he likened it to a well and said that if I didn't replenish myself I would crash again, I asked would the depression not lift naturally in time, he said it wouldn't unless I changed a parameter , he has put me back on the anxiety programme which will be one day a week for about 6 weeks as an out patient,

I am off all meds 16 months I had been on olanzapine, Effexor zanex and assorted sleeping meds for approx 2 years.

Weaned off 375 mg effexor over two years, I had previously come off xanax, rivotrill and olazapine. Reinstated 75mg of effexor on the 22/12/16

I know, I do understand.

Did something trigger your ocd to get worse? If so, is it something you can see yourself sorting out with just therapy.

It is a tough one. This time of year is very emotional. Can you put it on hold until after the New Year?

Maybe it's worth asking the Moderators.

I wish I could be more help.

So I went to my doc he wants me to reinstate at 150 I said no way he said 75, I dunno what to do, my head is all over the place what am I gonna do.

Hi, dowdaller.

How far off are you on your drugs? Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding this in your signature. Do you have a jump off date for your drugs?

I believe you're at least a year off, and reinstatements are a hit or a miss the farther out you are.

Also, once your CNS is destabilized, you may be a lot more sensitive to these drugs, so even 75 mg is likely to be way too high a dose.

I'm hoping you're able to handle this with your non-drug coping skills. I've really admired how you've managed to come off a really difficult drug cocktail, and still keep on with work and raising your family. I hope you come out of this wave soon and get some relief. You really are doing amazingly well considering what your mind and body were subjected to.

Please keep us updated.

Yes, dowdaller, I sympathise greatly.  I kept thinking about my kids and how I had to keep going for them, over the period 1978 until 2001 when I retired about 3 years early (at 57).

I went to work on many days - endlessly it seemed - feeling like the proverbial "death warmed up".

Do you find, often, though, that once you get to work and have to carry out stuff, and chat with colleagues, that the very low morning mood lifts a bit?

I did, but it never got to the stage of me feeling recovered.  Medication changed over that period, too.  There is always the chance that something revolutionary will come up in the next few years.

Sometimes you see in the media radical new procedures that were absent in my time.  All that came up in my time were the damned SSRI & SNRI heralded by devilish trumpet fanfare

Maybe stuff to do with genes and microsurgery/implants in the brain?

Anyway, I made it to here.  Not far, I guess, but still here and hoping for better and seeing my grown up family and a delightful grandchild.

Any decisions about yes or no to taking any therapy/medication will have to be your own, as we know, and as SA regularly reminds us.

Hope my message helps a little, at least.

More best wishes to you!

Hi D.  I hope you don't mind me saying that after all this time off - (14 months ?) this sounds a little extreme and at a very high starting dose, if that's the route you have decided to go.

You do realize it's a risk at this point . No one can say how your CNS is going to react after this period of time.

If you are going to reinstate it might be better to start off at a much lower dose - perhaps 1-5 mg.

Let us know your thoughts and perhaps we can advise a starting dose.
