Olfactory disturbances: changes in the sense of smell

In month 3 of my Prozac withdrawal I started experiencing this really bad smell in my nose. At first it smelled like my dogs feet, then it smelled like yeast and now I don't know what it smells like. I smell it everyday, it comes and goes throughout the day. I have been to an ENT and nothing is wrong. Has anyone else experienced this? Any help or suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I remember several olfactory disturbances on the first week of withdrawal. But mine was more like super-sensitive nose rather than strange smells.

Past AD Experiences : (Fluvoxamine 3 years, D/C'd @ age 15).

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it

WITHDRAWAL REGIMEN/STORY

Originally for OCD, the luvox took about 6 months to taper off.

Withdrawal supplements; lemon balm, Vitamin B3, black water/fulvic acid, high-protein diet to restore neurotransmitters, aniracetam to counter memory issues, deprenyl for persisting anhedonia.

Regimen still maintained til this day. Lemon balm, generally as capsules, however, as I suffer chronic Insomnia, I often use essential oil or as aromatherapy before bed , in combination with magnesium and lysine on bad nights.

Thank you for responding Area 1255.  I am thinking this strange smell is from withdrawal, but I cannot be certain.  I was hoping that someone on this site would have heard about a strange smell during withdrawal.  It is really getting to me.  Some days I can deal with it easier then others.

Thank you for the links. Thank you for also telling me how to google searches. I just wish I had a better handle at tolerating the smell. Some of the other symptoms I am having the nausea, crying, internal shaking and hot flashes and night sweats I can tolerate a little better then the smell I am constantly dealing with. I do have days when it is hard to deal with the nausea and crying, but I try to do my best. I was thinking at nine months off the Prozac I still wouldn't be feeling this bad. I am actually starting to have resentment to my friends that feel good and I know that is awful. They go out and do whatever they want and I feel like I am just sitting here suffering. I miss the happy person I was on Prozac, not the drugged version just the happy version.

I totally understand having feelings of resentment about friends feeling good.  I too have been having days of crying and nausea and I'm still tapering.  I also have night sweats and hot flashes and still don't know what falls into the hormone basket or wd basket.

I'm sorry about the smell issue and I hope you find some answers.

Hibari -  Thank you for your support and reminding me that I am not alone.  I have been dealing with the nausea since July 2015 and some days it really gets to me.  I am sorry to hear that you are also dealing with the nausea and crying.  I believe that my night sweats and hot flashes are hormones.  I didn't have them while I was on Prozac but I sure have them now.  I can deal with them a lot better then some of the symptoms of withdrawal.

O2bhappy, I am so sorry for the way you are suffering. I also started to experience olfactory disturbances while taking Prozak. Here you can find details.

1992 - Antidepressants, Antipsychotics and benzodiazepines in hospital for about 1,5 month, with PTSD diagnosed. Then I abruptly stopped taking pills. W/d for few months and then no symptoms for many years.

2013 – Doctor prescribes Paxil, Amitriptyline, Risperidone due to insomnia, anxiety and weight loss. Then it starts a long story about changing diagnosis and adding/changing meds. I started to taper in December 2014. Severe withdrawal symptoms for  4 months. Then the 1st window.

April 2015 – meds free. June, July – the first big window which lasted until mid-October. Then a wave again, but this time with new strange symptoms I’ve never had before.

Ayaa,

My bad smell started 3 months after I stopped taking Prozac.  Did you olfactory disturbances resolve themselves or do you still have them?

Yes I am 4 years off and i still have such sensitivities to smells etc. If i am having a bad day and I smell something its like stuck in my nose and makes me have terrible physical symptoms.

12 year on Paxil 20mg. Dropped to 5mg a few years before weaning, Was on 5mg weaned over a few months and then went off Aug 15, 2012. Severe withdrawal started Nov 2012 and have been slowly recovering. Have had all physical symptoms especially muscle, immune and food sensitivities!

Yes I have had this.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

ive had years of 'phantom' input for all senses.  also, misrecognized sensory input, misattributed sensory interpretations (like hearing something behind you that is in front of you, for example), and diminished ability to ascertain input.

sometimes these experiences are somewhat clockwork, sometimes they are part of waves of symptoms.

from 2005-2012, i spent 7 years taking 17 different psychotropic medications covering several classes.  i would be taking 3-7 medications at a time, and 6 out of the 17 medications listed below were maxed or overmaxed in clinical dosage before i moved on to trying the next unhelpful cocktail.

antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, tetracyclics): zoloft, wellbutrin, effexor, lexapro, prozac, cymbalta, remeron
antipsychotics (atypical): abilify, zyprexa, risperdal, geodon
sleep aids (benzos, off-label antidepressants & antipsychotics, hypnotics): seroquel, temazepam, trazodone, ambien
anxiolytics: buspar
anticonvulsants: topamax

i tapered off all psychotropics from late 2011 through early 2013, one by one.  since quitting, ive been cycling through severe, disabling withdrawal symptoms spanning the gamut of the serious, less serious, and rather worrisome side effects of these assorted medications.  previous cross-tapering and medication or dosage changes had also caused undiagnosed withdrawal symptoms.

Okay, thank you. I often hear people and can't tell where the sound is coming from, but I attribute this to just being really sleep deprived.

I am still dealing with the smell hallucinations on a daily basis. The smell changes from something that I can't describe to smelling cigarette smoke. No one around me smokes so it is very weird to smell cigarette smoke. I will ask people around me if the smell it and they always say no.

This is very frustrating.

When a person has a brain injury, say from a car accident, if their sense of smell is affected it can take 4-5 years and sometimes longer for it to return to normal.  I don't know if this is the same for a person who's brain is affected by psych drugs, but I do find the comparison interesting.

Ive had this since september 2016 on and off. Im now about a year off drugs.

At first it was kinda like an acidic vinegary smell and put me off from eating at a cafe. Im having it right now and i cant get rid of this horrible sweet "woody?" smell. It reeks and is worse when im stressed or too stimulated

2009: Put on Fluoxetine (20mg) and Risperdal (0.5mg) for OCD. Dose was increased a few weeks later to 40mg Fluoxetine and 1mg Risperdal.

2011: Began experiencing Depersonalisation and Visual Snow, general loss of energy and breast growth. Was kept on 40mg Fluoxetine until Late Dec 2015. Risperdal dosage varied and was kept on 0.5mg for a long while before Nov 2015.

Early Sep 2015: Began having symptoms of extreme anxiety, psychosis and hot flushes due to mixing illegal drugs.

Late Nov 2015: Psych doc raised Risperdal to 8mg. Began having severe and hellish Akathisia. Was kept being given Diazepam to cope.

Early Dec 2015: Began seeing a new psych doc who tapered me off Risperdal over a period of a few weeks and put me onto Quetiapine.

Late Dec 2015: Quick tapered off of everything due to little guidance.

Mid March 2016: Reinstated Fluoxetine (5mg), dose was increased to 10mg a couple of weeks later. Gave me restless legs and stopped taking immediately (RLS was unbearable).

10 May 2016: Unsuccessful Fluoxetine reinstatement at 1mg. Drug free since May 2016.

Diet (When Able): Low carb and sugar, high fat & dark greens. medium protein and fruit. Taking 100mg magnesium, 1000mg omega 3, 0.25mg Melatonin daily,. Drinking at least one mug of chamomile a day. Weekly Light exercise. Meditating daily and practising mindfulness.

It seems to me that what I am experiencing with my smell is a less common withdrawal symptom.  It is just awful.  I have been dealing with it for 15 months.  I haven't gotten a break from it.  I have it every day.  Do you think this withdrawal symptom will go away?  Sometimes I get so angry about the smell I just want to rip my nose off, I know that is extreme but the smell is awful.

I am so sorry that you are dealing with the smell issues.  It is awful.   I have been dealing with the smell since Nov 2015.  I have it everyday.  It is awful.  Nothing I have tried has helped it.  It is so frustrating.  Have you found anything that helps it?

My doctor sent me to an ENT.  Of course she found nothing wrong.  I also had a MRI in March and that was clear.

I just want this withdrawal symptom gone.

Every time I smell it, it is just a reminder that I took Prozac and it angers me.

I do believe it will heal, O2b, just like all the other w/d symptoms.  I'm wondering if it is a symptom that will take longer (as insomnia often does), but it will still heal.

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't a w/d symptom; I was more interested in the idea that smell is a sense that - no matter what the cause - seems to takes longer to heal.  It's just my musings really, after having known 1 or 2 people with brain injuries.  In each case smell was one of the last senses to get back to normal.

Thank you for giving me hope that the smell hallucinations I am having will heal.  Like all w/d symptoms, this one is very frustrating.

I have been fortunate to see improvements with my w/d, but this one hasn't improved.  There are certainly times when it is worse and of course during those times I get very upset by it.  I try to "allow" it to be there, but I just want it gone.  I will try to be patient.

Hi O2bhappy . Ive had olfactory hallucinations before. I had them for 9 months ( its a cant explain smell but it smells like chemicals) and it makes me unable to sleep. But the weird thing is sometimes when i take a shower it goes away. But sometimes it still stays. But one day when i was homeless i took a shower at a homeless place and then about 2-3 days later the smell went away. I do believe its something to do with medication withdrawal because alot of people on here say so. But since we are all different i wouldnt know how long it would take for you to get better but just hope it goes away.

I have had some bad w/d symptoms that I have dealt with but the olfactory hallucinations is one of the worse.  I am blessed it doesn't last all day but I have had it everyday for 14 moths.  I can't wait for the day that I think wow I have not had that awful smell this week.  I was even sent to an ENT because of it.  Of course, they found nothing wrong, which is a good thing.  I have found nothing that helps or gives me relief and I have tried everything.  During withdrawal I have tried meditation to help with some of my symptoms.  There are days that I cannot even meditate because taking a deep breathe is awful.  It seems to me to be a rare withdrawal symptom because I haven't really read about many people having this symptom.

Thank you for letting me know that yours went away.  That gives me hope and that is exactly what I need.

Discontinued Fluoxetine cold turkey after taking it for 12 years. Stopped taking Fluoxetine in August 2015.

My current withdrawal symptoms: Itchy skin, smell hallucination, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, and anxiety.

Synthroid for hypothyroidism.

i was wondering if it is normal for my smell to be off. I will smell things and they smell almost like a chemical. I can’t describe it but it’s really scaring me

Yep it's one of those stupid symptoms, like acne, or dry lips. My sense of smell is more sensitive than it was. I can smell an empty smoothie cup as if the whole smoothie was still there from 3 feet away. Incense is stronger too. Yeah I get the chemical smell. It could be a phantom smell or you're picking up on something. Took me forever to find a chemical smell coming from my pillow case. Just something about the material that I didn't pick up on before WD. Also found a chemical smell coming from my window fan. If it isn't making symptoms worse or it's not completely overwhelming then it shouldn't hurt you. Just add it to the weird symptoms list.
