Tongue symptoms of antipsychotics

Recommended Posts

Did anyone experience stiffness of tongue (expecially the tip) and tongue muscular tension while or after taking antipsychotic meds?

I took Risperdal for a month in august and since then I have these symptoms but I don't know if they are due to the drug or not.

Took Risperdal (4 mg for one week, 2 mg for some weeks and 3 mg for three days) from early August to early September 2016.

Hi DIL. The movement disorder should resolve. It's good you were only on the neuroleptic for a short time. My tongue was never involved but other parts of my body were. I am almost resolved but for the jaw clenching. You movements seem mild. Hoping for the best for you.

88 mcg levothyroxine

Nearly 30 years of benzos, antidepressants, antipsychotics, took a lot of them.

I can feel and enjoy life again even the ups and downs.

Hi IDK,

Interesting I saw your post as I had a severe numb/swollen tongue and whole head etc not able to speak clearly, kind of slurry.

I know it is caused by reaction to Lexapro I'm taking. It got better each time I drop dose but got back quickly so I had to cut fast.

Is there a pattern? Like more before or after dosing? Is it constant?

Hope it is self limited and goes away for you.

I have been tapering off quetiapine (Seroquel) for almost a year and am finally done. I did it very slowly but still had severe symptoms with each 10% reduction. The worst symptoms erupted after my last dose a few weeks ago. My tongue has been swollen/sore and seems to be worse after eating. The gastrointestinal symptoms are terrible. I am trying cope with the rest of my angry nervous system symptoms with acupuncture, walking, distraction, and some herbs given to me by my naturopath. The worst symptom has to be my tongue pain because it affects the way I talk, and it makes me very self-conscious. It also challenges my ability to persevere through this most difficult phase of my wd. I am very angry about the isolation I feel which is both self-imposed at the moment but also a result of my psych. telling me to do this taper but also not to come back until I was finished. No support from her. Also have not told my family because I am afraid they won't be supportive. How do you explain this to them when they have bought into the fear-mongering around compliance? Suffering alone and scared that all my symptoms will never disappear.

Started tapering of quetiapine (Seroquel) Nov.30/15.  Stopped clonazepam a year ago. I am down to 56.25 mg. quetiapine. Tapered 10% and finally finished after using a compounded prescription for a month. Officially done Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

Hi Coffee60,

I'm sorry you suffered so much too.

I just took a look at your thread but don't see much there.

You said you are done with the taper. But your signature shows different info.

Can you share more of your meds history and when the tongue swollen started?

You are not alone. Thousands and thousands are suffering this moment from this tragedy.

Just updated my signature. I didn't keep detailed notes because I found it made me more focused on my symptoms which have been unbearable. My compounding pharmacist encouraged me to take the final leap to go to 0ml. I am doing acupuncture and taking some herbs given to me by a knowledgeable naturopath. I can't do much exercise because the nerves in my feet and lower back are tight/on fire. I really find if I can get distracted I do better. Some sleep issues but my ndoc says it's my liver detoxing. I wake up around 3 a.m., read a bit and so far have been able to go back to sleep. Just doing this without telling friends or family is stressful but I assume they would be more concerned about compliance as I used to be. I have learned that that was not in my best interest. Trying to look forward and not backward because the person who was a good patient does not exist anymore.

The tongue started well before I spoke to my psych about side effects a year ago. I asked her about B12 because I had found that a deficiency can cause tingling in the feet and it affects the tongue. The doc dismissed it at the time but my ndoc has started to give me B12 shots and feels my level is way too low. With the damage caused by the meds and the low B12 my tongue is in bad shape. I am holding onto hope that things will improve.

Thanks for updating the signature!

So the tongue swollen started before you started tapering. And you are off all drugs now?

How long were you on the meds before tapering? Any changes in dosage before tapering?

I'm trying to see if the tongue issue was a side effects instead of WD symptom. If that's the case, being off the meds should provide full relief from it.

My doctor says my tongue is not swollen. I don't feel pain but only stiffness.

I think this should be a neurological problem. I just hope it isn't dystonia/dyskinesia or something like that. I'm planning to see a neurologist.

Took Risperdal (4 mg for one week, 2 mg for some weeks and 3 mg for three days) from early August to early September 2016.

Hi Lex. Yes it is constant but the intensity changes: sometimes the stiffness is more severe, sometimes less. I don't know if it is related to the dosing considering I quit cold turkey one month ago.

I guess I was on quetiapine about 5 years. I had been on lithium but when my kidney function was found to be 50% I was switched. About 2 years ago I started to have severe constipation, tingling in my toes and feet, and just terrible gut issues. I had a nerve conduction test done on my feet, testing by gastroenterologist which led to a colonoscopy. All along my psych denied any relation to meds. All testing was fine. Some specialists did mention meds oh and I forgot my blood is messed up too. Finally a year ago my psych admitted the constipation might be related but kept repeating the mantra "but you're on such a small dose". She told me go off slowly but I did a search and found this site where I learned about 10% taper and that is what I did. At the end I had the help of a great compounding pharmacist who became my cheerleader and  my naturopath who has studied pharmaceuticals.

The tongue was bad before the taper but not as bad as now. Yes I did change dose from 150mg. to 75 mg. before taper. I hope your comment about the tongue improving proves to be correct. I am also having a lot of nerve issues, especially when I sit down and when I drive. My ndoc says it's the nerves at the sacrum being compressed and they are mad right now.

It was the hematologist who first mentioned the meds and that sent me straight to google.

Hi IDK,

It's must be awful that you have it constantly. Mine is not painful either, but hard to speak properly, like very slurry . If it started after you stopped the meds, then it should be clear it's from WD.

Thank you COFFEE60 for sharing your meds history and explaining your general situation!

It sounds the tongue swollen is also a WD symptom for you.

Giving everyone's experience, I feel it's quite clear that it's a WD symptom for all of us.

I only had it once last week. Now I know it must be from my recent fast taper. I have been holding since then and it never returned.

I experienced xerostomia on Xanax. It may not be harsh, I would say, but very awkward. From time to time I could also feel as if I had my throat swollen. I always thought it's due to stress, but I have to admit it stopped happening ever since I started tapering paroxetine (10% since October).

I don't want much with life. I want it leave me alone.

Medical history:

2005 - 2006 – diagnosis: OCD. Meds: sertraline (Setaloft), from 30 mg to 120 mg. Side effects: insomnia, anorexia (psychic inabillity to eat), obesity; some sleep medication (don't remember the name), side effects: halucination. 2007 – sertraline withdrawal by myself. Reducing the dose slowly (120 mg – 90 mg – 60 mg – 30 mg – 0 mg). Felt great for about a year. 2008 – diazepam, taking ocasionally if needed. 2010 – paroxetine (Seroxat, then: Parogen) for OCD. From 20 mg to 40 mg. Side effects: none. Piracetamum (Memotropil), side effects: general weakness. Did you feel like your whole head was like swollen and your tongue swollen too and stiffness in your jaw, uncontrolled movements of the tongue, plus most of the time dry mouth but sometimes saliva excess ???? Like you had your jaw and neck muscles activated all the time clenching your jaw and pulling your shoulders ? Do you feel dizzy and unstable walking ?? Plus, did you stutter when you spoke simple things and just hearing yourself like a total idiot unable to speak simple things like your brain do not reacting anymore ???
