A Rorschach Test for Psych Meds

Many of you may have recalled reading a story about Keris Myrick in the New York Times who, even though she has a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, thrives today as CEO of Project Return Peer Support Network. In reading the article, the inference seemed to be that she was taking medication although one could assume by certain parts of the article that perhaps she wasn't.

Anyway, Bob Whitaker has set the record straight in his latest blog entry on psychology today, http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/mad-in-america/201111/rorschach-test-psych-meds as as she hasn't take medication on regular basis for 5 years. She did it for six months after being convinced by her psychiatrist Timothy Pylko to do it. She then began with his support to take medication on an as needed basis. But this was only when all her other coping mechanisms didn't work. She hasn't done so for more than a year as she found it to greatly impair her cognitively and interfere with her work performance.

Of course, the usual critics will say that someone like her is a very rare person and people with schizophrenia have to be on drugs come heck or high water. Heck, even before Whitaker's blog entry, there were negative comments about someone with her condition being rare in being the CEO of an organization.

By the way, I found it interesting that her psychiatrist did not get great reviews on patient sites. If you read them, you would never guess in a million years that he would be so flexible in working with Ms. Myrick.

Enjoy the blog entry:
