Hazel, I'm not sure how we can best support you, or whether we can support you at all, if you are adding another SSRI, and a brand-new one.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Yoga (gentle to medium); walks; daily breath practice; nutrition, fruits/veg; nature; water; EastEnders (lol); practicing self-compassion, self-care; boundaries; connection; allowing feelings; t r u s t ing that I, too, will heal. (--> may need to be reminded of this.)

He wanted to try an SNRI, but I wanted to stick with the SSRI’s.  I suggested Celexa because I read on here that Prozac and Celexa can be used as a bridge when having a hard time getting off an SSRI like Paxil.  I tried Prozac in the past, but didn’t like how it made me feel, so Celexa seemed like the next best option.

Zoloft 50 mg Fall 2003-October 2016

I went up to 150 mg for several months during the winter of 2016 after going through a tough time trying to stabilize.

Lexapro 5 mg and then 10 mg October 2016-December 2016

Paxil December 2016 to present.  Started at 10 mg went up to 20 mg for three weeks and started reducing by 5mg every 2 weeks per doctors orders.  Got down to 7.5 mg and ran into trouble, found this website and updosed to 10 mg.

9mg paroxetine June 18-6.5 mg in am 2.5 mg pm.

July 20 began switch to Citalopram-9 mg Paxil and 5 mg citalopram

July 24-7.5mg paroxetine and 7.5mg Citalopram

July 27-5mg paroxetine and 10 citalopram

July 30-2.5 paroxetine and 10 of Citalopram

August 2-2mg paroxetine and 10mg Citalopram, dropped paroxetine Aug. 3

August 8 increased to 15 mg citalopram

Take 1mg lorazepam as needed and 3mg melatonin at night.

I switched to a different SSRI in the hopes of stabilizing and then eventually tapering. I was getting progressively worse on the paroxetine and Alto was doubtful I would ever stabilize on it.  I felt I needed to do something.  Trust me, it was an extremely difficult decision and one I did not make lightly.

I guess if you are unable to support me, I’ll just figure it out somehow.

Hazel, I am concerned about dropping Paxil at 2mg.

How would you feel about continuing to taper closer to zero on the Paxil?

If you are feeling up to it, please update your signature to include these most recent changes. I'm also seeing Lamictal and other things mentioned in this thread, but not in your signature. Ideally, writing a signature by date would be most helpful for reading at a glance.

i.e.,

June 2018--0.5mg Drug A, 7.5mg Drug B

Had you been taking 9mg as recently as June, then went to 2mg? If so, that is quite a jump.

I did a cross taper as was recommended by my doctor and also on this site in the topic on the Prozac bridge.  It says you should ideally make the switch within 2 weeks, which is how I did it, otherwise you can have a more difficult time dropping the original drug.

I think that I would have stayed at 10 for several weeks.  That's based on my gut feeling, but I have probably read something that informs that feeling.

Rabe is right -- every change needs a hold in between.  I wish I had known to stay at 10 mg Zoloft and stabilize and then taper from there.

I feel that going to 20 will not help you at all, and will probably make things worse.  Each increase in the dose made me feel worse.  I can't tell you how angry I am that none of the doctors knew that dose increases after changes hurt people.  An increase of 50% is something I have never seen recommended here.  However, maybe if you found the thread of someone who switched to Celexa? Or Prozac which is what more people try to switch to?  You might see what that person's experience was?

I was leary of going up to 15 as well, but worried 10 wouldn’t be enough.  I will hold now for a long while unless things continue to get worse over the next week.  In that case, I think I would try to slowly reduce and see if that helps.

Just know, from reading here, that there are no magic pills or magic solutions or easy solutions except for the body to heal with time.  I say that knowing how very difficult it is to do Nothing, or feel like I am doing nothing, when I feel so awful.  Making a list of coping skills...those are hard to do as well when so off but they do help a bit.  Take care!💜

Oops...Im sorry...meant to write before i sent that! Such a mind!

I just wanted to say I worry about your worry/ruminations Hazel.  I care about you and could see this pattern in the past and it seems to be continuing...do you think that you always need a plan or an 'escape' so to speak...a way out if things if they dont go as you planned?  I ask because I have had the same pattern in my own life and as my son has pointed out more than once...when I try to 'fix' something over and over it generally serves to make the situation more difficult to resolve.

In what you said you were leery about increasing (concerned about the future), worried 10 wouldn't be enough (concerned about the present), then you say you will hold for a very long time now...unless....Im not sure what the criteria would be...but then you would  try to slowly reduce to see if that helps. (worried about the future)...and Im sure all of this worry comes from things in the past.  What do you do if that doesnt help Hazel?  Guess what Im saying is it becomes a vicious circle of always doing but really not getting anywhere except for making these changes to your system over and over.

I DO hope this recent change works for you....and I hope you will post your signature as Songbird requested so that perhaps you can get some advice here.

I am justt concerned for you as I can see myself in this mirror...wanted to share that for what it is worth.  Take care of you!💜

Thanks Rabe.

Unfortunately, I have not felt very supported here since I switched to the citalopram.  I actually find it’s better for me to stay away from the forum at this time.  I do appreciate you reaching out and being supportive.  It’s just overall, I feel more upset and rejected when I check in here.  Maybe eventually I’ll return, but for now I don’t feel like it’s healthy for me.

Hi @Rabe and @Rosetta!

Glad to hear from the two of you😊. You both have always been so supportive and I really do appreciate that.

I have been improving little by little on the citalopram.  I’m definitely not 100%, but I feel much better than I did on the paroxetine.  I am hopeful that I will be able to stabilize on this medication, but know it will probably take some time yet.

Thanks for checking in and I will update now and then to let you know how it is going.  I hope you both are doing well.

That is great news, Hazel!  🙂

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg; 3/29/24: 1.17 mg; 4/5/24: 1.14 mg; 4/13/24: 1.11 mg

Thanks @Carmie.  I plan to give myself plenty of time to stabilize and then do a super slow taper.

Good luck with the brass monkey slide, that seems to be a very sensible way to taper.

Hugs to you too!

Hi Hazel, how are you doing? 💚

Hi Carmie,

thanks for asking.  I’ve had more anxiety over the past week, but it was that time of the month for me, so that’s typical.  I’m hoping this week will be better.  Overall I feel I am better than I was a couple of months ago.

How have you been doing?
