Lifer stress still kicking my butt, and kicking anxiety into high gear today.

History: Prozac & Lithium from 1999 to 2003. Ended up back on after 4 months because taking a beta-blocker caused immediate depression (just 2 doses - turned out I didn't even need it; I had no other withdrawal symptoms - I might have ended up med and withdrawal-free otherwise :(). - Switched to Effexor (75mg 3/day) and Seroquel (50mg 3/day) in 2010. - Did a self-taper during 2016. - Developed Discontinuation Syndrome 02/17.

Supplements: Magnesium-Glycinate 400mg split into 4 100mg doses throughout the day. Vitamin C 500mg - once per day. Fish Oil 1360 mg (950 mg Active Omega-3) - twice per day.

Still in a wave, having higher anxiety than before. Not sure if it's the updose of the magnesium-glycinate. Most likely it is the big dose of life stress that we have come under. I think it would cause anxiety in anybody to see their wife in a hostile work environment that is bringing her spirits down.

I added fish oil this past Wednesday. I hope it moves my recovery to the next stage. Of course, this could be contributing to my anxiety. But I am determined to give it a week to see if I can get some improvement. I need the fish oil for my lipid profile so I can avoid going on statins.

If you are the praying sort - please pray for me and my family. I'm convinced that if we could cut out the unwarranted stress over my wife's job, I could get back on track.

Hi SJ

So sorry to hear things haven't improved. I couldn't take magnesium as it made my anxiety worse and upset my stomach. Maybe fish oil hasn't helped if you have just added it.

Stress is a big factor in how we feel though. It doesn't take much, even a little worry over something, to become a huge worry in WD.

It sounds like your wife is having a real tough time. At least you are supportive and caring for her.

Thanks, Flowers!

The magnesium-glycinate has been working well for me. That's why I stepped up to the 4th capsule (which brings me to the RDA of 400mg). Thankfully, it has been gentle on my stomach. Now, Magnesium-Citrate - boy, that did a number on my guts! And it actually did give me more anxiety.

Yeah, I'm hoping the fish oil will begin to work soon.

Life stress is so unavoidable - but if I was stronger, I could handle it better. Such is the road to recovery. We can;t control every outside factor. We are looking to find my wife another job. But the one she has would actually be perfect for our life situation if her boss was not being a jerk and if the company was not hell-bent on squeezing the life out of its employees. Sadly, we live in a time when the employer has the control and tells you that you should sacrifice everything for the company because you should just be thankful to have a job at all.

Oh well. We will endure with the help and strength of God!

I know what these companies are like - they hire and fire and treat you terribly because they know they can get someone else if necessary. It was pressure of work that lead me to take these AD's years ago unfortunately.

At least she has you and a nice home to come back to.

You both will be in my thoughts.

Arrrgggg!

Somebody brought a big tub of Cherry Twizzlers to the office! I love Twizzlers. But I can't have candy. Not good for my blood sugar - and high-frusctose corn syrup and all of the other chemicals in candy are a big no-no in recovery!

Okay - I had one. Praying it has zero effect on my chemistry - and is just yummy and enjoyable.

These meds have robbed us of so many things - but I will not let them deny me just one Cherry Twizzler!*

SJ

* - Thank God they brought in Cherry. If it was Chocolate Twizzlers, I would be in really big trouble!

I am so tired of everything I experience now - everything I see or think or feel - going through the withdrawal/recovery filter. I just want the anxiety to go away. I just want this to stop. I want to be a normal person who lives life. I am so tired of the tremors and the other physical symptoms of anxiety. I was never an anxious person. I was an engaged, courageous, involved, living life person before these drugs. Now every day is a trial. Now I have to do things or avoid doing things all based on anxiety and potential triggers. I never had to do this. I never had triggers.

I just want to go back in time and never take that first Prozac.

Please God - make this stop.

I sometimes joke with my wife that up in Heaven there will be a carnival booth where we get to punch the drug manufacturers in the throat. Oh, and Peter Kramer - the author of "Listening to Prozac," the book that convinced me that these drugs were safe.

I laugh, she laughs - and then she reminds me that such a thought is very un-godly of me.

Thanks. It has been a rough couple of days. I think it is a combination of some outrageous life stress (re: my wife's hostile job situation), some really bad eating over the past week, and adding Fish Oil to my supplement routine.

Note, I am not "blaming" the fish oil per say. Whenever I add a supplement, I get a few days to a week of increased symptoms. I think it was Alto who once said that the recovery brain is resistant to change, even potentially good ones, and especially to chemical ones like supplements. So I have adopted the "give it 1 to 2 weeks" policy when it comes to supplements.

I added the fish oil for 2 reasons: 1) it is supposed to help with recovery, and 2) my lipid profile is in the red and it was the fish oil or a statin - and I do not want to take a statin.

So like I said, I need to give it a week or two. I certainly would appreciate all of the prayers and good vibes I can get right now!

I hope the fish oil helps - I agree much better than taking statins.

So my wife just informed me that her and our daughter are doing some girl stuff with another mom tomorrow and will be gone all day. And immediately the anxiety kicked in. I am trying to self-talk my way through it; I don't want her plans - which she so very much is entitled to and deserves - to derail me both today and tomorrow.

What this also shows me is that I really need to cultivate some local friendships. I have lived on Long Island for a very long time now, but really have no local friends. All my friends from growing up are scattered across the country.

There really is no reason for me to be anxious; I've been home alone plenty of times. This is just withdrawal thinking.

Hi SJ

I have been like this at times in WD. It feels like someone has taken my safety net away when my husband is not at home with me. Today I am OK and he is not at home but another day I could really panic over it. My friends are not always free when I am either.

What I have done to cope is make a list of little things I can do around the house  or garden. Do some baking. Read a book or watch a DVD. It makes the time go quicker to be occupied. Maybe investigate a way of making new friends like a hobby or club etc.

You also have all of us here who understand totally. There will always be someone here to connect with if you are really struggling.

I can so relate. If I have to be home alone and/or there's no where for me to go to meet up with other ppl, I have the same reaction.

it's incredible to me, since I spent the VAST majority of my time alone (I'm single and live alone) when I was on the meds. I was so over medicated- I was in a fog and days just blended together, I was barely aware of being alone and it certainly did not bother me in the least.
I think it may be WD thinking as well as, perhaps, the drugged feeling of being in our own personal little cloud, that's going away as we withdraw...

I don't know. things surely change as we go thru recovery

Flowers, what great advice!

Hi SJ. I'm in the same boat - only it's to do with fishing. My husband is away this weekend with his son and they will be fishing up the coast, which is great but I feel a little left alone

I've decided to make the most of it and have some girl time. Catch up with some friends and have some " me " time as well.

I do understand the angst and I think it's a drug thing because this " neediness" was never there before - at least for me and maybe you as well.

I hope it will be ok. It is withdrawal thinking but it can be so strong as to derail the best intentions. I have found " changing the channel " to be so helpful during this journey. This link may help:

( Let's compare notes: after the weekend)

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Thank you all so much for rallying around me! I used to love those alone days, but that very well could have been the meds just not caring. Growing up, I wasn't keen on being alone a lot, but when I was, it was easy to occupy myself. Now, even when I try to change the channel/distract myself, everything filters through the withdrawal recovery brain.

Hang in there, AliG! Keep yourself distracted as best you can!

My wife was very sympathetic when I expressed my concerns (which right there is a BIG help!). She's going to talk to her friend and see if it's really a "girl's time" thing or if I can hang out with them. Also, they are only going to be a few hours together, and then my wife and daughter are going to go to my mother-in-law's house. So I might meet up with them there (actually, my m-i-l is totally cool, and my wife suggested she drop me over there before her time with her friend and I can at least be around my m-i-l and help her around the house).

But the big thing is how helpful and understanding my wife is being. There are days when my withdrawal recovery becomes too much of a drag on her. But most of the time her concern and love shows, and that helps a ton!

I'll let everybody know how it plays out.

Okay - so I went with my wife and daughter. They dropped me off a t my mother-in-law's for a few hours, and then they re-joined me and we all did stuff together. I had low-level background anxiety throughout the day - so pretty par for the course - though no big spikes! Praise God!

But then around 5pm I got extremely fatigued. That has not happened before. It lasted a couple of hours and then I bounced back. I went to bed around 10:30ish, slept until 4am, and then actually dozed on and off until 8am. Very out of the ordinary for me during recovery.

I am not having my morning cortisol spike - praise God! Some background low-level anxiety only.

BUT... I am again extremely fatigued. New symptom? Or maybe just my body is finally making less cortisol and I need to adjust to that.

We shall see.

I have learned through my research that one of our biggest foes is our own limbic system - where memories are processed and our body reacts to cortisol and adrenaline. The only way to heal the limbic system is to rewire it by bringing up good memories and doing things to form new good experiences. This article might help you. It definitely helped me!

Fatigue started earlier today - but I did have a poor night's sleep, so that is a contributing factor to be sure.

Feel like I could use a cup of coffee, but there is no way I am risking it. Just going to have to take it slow and easy today. But the fatigue is showing - I am making mistakes at work.

Hi SJ-- the constant fatigue is a killer, isn't it.  We're putting ourselves through so much it's just totally exhausting.  We live with it 24/7 so we don't realize just how much energy WD/recovery takes.  It does get better the longer you hang in there though.

I going to post this here instead of on the Dealing with Emotional Spirals thread because it doesn't really fit in there.  Clearing ones mind takes practice at the best of times and having  chemical induced neuroemotional babble constantly thrown in doesn't help.  Many years ago when I was training in mental control I learned some things that might be helpful.  First off a person has to start small.  Trying to have a clear quiet mind for long periods of time is quite difficult to do.  Starting with short bursts of a few seconds at a time is a good place to begin. Here's an exercise to work on.

Take a breath in, shut your eyes, and let it out.  As you breath out allow your mind to go momentarily blank and all sensation to fall from your body. Take another breath, open your eyes, continue breathing and don't think.  It will probably be only a few seconds before thoughts start to return, but for those few moments you were in control and had cleared your mind.  Now, here's the newageie part, when you do the exercise try to remember all the feelings/sensations and lack there of, that are happening in your mind and body, but don't think about them, just let your body actively absorb them.  Repeat this exercise several times a day.  With practice it will get easier and the length of time it lasts will grow longer.  It will take practice because we are trying to build "muscle memory" of what it's like to have no thoughts at all.  Which is why you can't think about your not thinking.  Once those "muscle memories" get entrenched they can be called up and used when needed.

Another technique for quieting the mind is a candle meditation.  This one is a bit more active because it involves distraction instead of having no thoughts.  It's best done during the evening in a dimly lit room.  It's also a good idea to have someone nearby because we are playing with fire here and don't want to burn down the house.  I like to use a common utility candle or a short taper because they have very exposed flames.  Big column candles hide their flames too much.  Light the candle and set it on a coffee table, the sit on the floor and lean against the sofa with your legs under the table so the candle is about two feet in front of you. Now, watch the flame.  There is nothing else in the whole of existence but that flame.  Don't think about the flame just experience watching it, and let everything else drift off.  If you catch yourself having a thought, immediately drop it and return to the flame.  Don't concentrate on the flame just experience it.  Keep this up for about ten minutes then stop and do something else.  While watching the flame the same newageie stuff from the other exercise applies.

Neuroemotional babble is hard to control but once you've learned these techniques and developed some "muscle memory" that control will come a lot more easily.  Also as you learn to quiet your mind you will find that your fatigue is decrease too.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Yes, the fatigue is awful, I feel it many days.

My blood test once showed a folic acid shortage last year and the prescribed 5mg tablets of the stuff made me feel best than I had been for a couple of years.

I thought I had found a good solution.

The +ve feelings and drive subsided in a few weeks despite my folic acid level being OK again.  Back to square one.

I forced myself to do "hard anaerobic zone exercise" yesterday, and it helped.  (10 mins step-climbing and descent, pulse 118-134 - for 72-year old.)

We can all relate though, to fighting through fatigue to do that stuff.

Effexor WD is a form of hell on earth.

By the way - and hopefully to raise a smile - brassmonkey used the tabu term "short taper" in the 4th paragraph of his last post.  As we know - he just ain't into that!

Cheers, guys.

Ya got me Peng!!   I guess you could use four smaller candles one after another and get the same affect.

Great techniques, Brass! I am going to work on my "thinking nothing" muscle memory!

And peng just cracked me up with the "short taper" reference! Oh, it is so great to laugh and smile.

I had another weird fatigue wave around dinner time again last night, but it was very short lived.

And I actually had a nice long period yesterday where I was thinking about things other than recovery!

So I am declaring a window! I pray that it is a permanent one, but I am aware that it may not be. I am working on making new experiences to train my limbic system not to give into the adrenaline/cortisol monster. And if a wave comes, then I will have a good load of new fun memories to think on.

Hi ShakeyJerr:

I know you don't follow me, but I have read quite a bit of your thread (hope you don't mind).

I just wanted to say you are always there for people in need, and always upbeat despite how you feel.

I admire you for that. :)

Thanks again.

Take care,

Thanks, Frogie!

I have discovered two things since stopping the psych-drugs: God really does want me to be a nice guy (I was a real butt-head on the meds), and my own recovery has been helped immensely by connecting with other people here on SA.

Plus, my wife is very big on staying upbeat, positive, and engaged - especially when it comes to healing. And I have learned to listen to my wife!

I know I'm still tapering, and not even the same meds you were on.

But it would be great if you could stop by and say hi once in a while. I really think that could help me immensely. You being so upbeat maybe it would wear off on me lol... :)

If you read my thread, you will see my life pretty much has been horrid since memorial weekend.

Thanks...

I have had a 10 day window with little to no symptoms! Praise God!!

However, I am getting some twinge of pain in my back again related to adrenal fatigue. And some morning anxiety has crept back in. Definitely a product of a bad night's sleep.

I switched up my routine yesterday and last night and little bit - but it appears that even little changes can have consequences.

During the day I was reading and got tired and tried to nap (even did doze off for a little while). But I awoke disoriented and got a bit hyper when my wife and daughter came home just as I was awakening.

The in the evening - in an attempt to fool my 6 hour bladder (that keeps waking me at 4am) - I took my magnesium and final drink of water 2 hours earlier than usual, thinking I would empty my bladder more completely before sleep time. But I ended up actually feeling energized enough to stay up a little later than usual (nap-caused for sure) and then awoke at 3am to pee!

So I shortened my sleep time, the magnesium probably wore off too soon, and the result is a discombobulated ShakeyJerr.

But I will endure. And I will not make any schedule changes. And naps are out for sure!

JanCarol wrote this over on the Healing the Limbic System thread. I'm linking it here because of previous discussions we have had on my thread about ruminations - and because it is awesome advice!
