I searched for a lemon balm post and didn't find anything. I found a few websites with benefits (the second shows some interactions). Wondering if anyone has tried lemon balm and their results.

Paxil 20mg started around 2013 dropped to 10 mg at some point dropped to 5mg for 1 week then C/T August 2016.

Buspar 10 mg 2x daily started 2013 fluctuating amounts.

Tried cylexa 1 week at beginning of August 2016.

Tried wellbutrin 1 week after cylexa stopped both.

I have been off all meds for around 4- 5 years.

Hi Dwell -

Did you ever try the lemon balm? I have never tried it, but if you did, I would love to know how you feel using it.

I have used it in the past for insomnia, and found that it did work.  Bottle called for 30 drops, but can use less.  I do not use it anymore because it binds to GABA receptors and I'm a Benzo survivor.  Also, constant use can lead to WD as it is like a very very mild Benzo.  Use with caution is my advice.

PAST

Gabapentin:  about 6 months in 2015, 300-900 mg, cold turkeyed Sept 2015 (at same time dc'd Klonopin)

Klonopin: June 2014- Sept 2015; 1mg tapered over 6 mths, dc'd at 0.25mg, withdrawal hellish (perhaps because of concurrent dc of gabapentin)

Mirtazepine: Jumped off at 2.4 mg. (stable in 8 months).

Seroquel:  June 14 - July 24, 2016, 25 mg alternate nights; smaller doses for shorter periods. Total use about 3 months

Lamictal: March 19, 2018 - 1 mg; March 23 - 1.25 mg; April 6 - 2mg. Discontinued at 2 mgJuly 1, 2018 due to Steven Johnson Syndrome.

CURRENT

Supplements: Vit D, turmeric

Naturethroid: 65 mcg for hypothyroidism

Trazodone: Oct 2015 - June 2016; 75 mg tapered over 2 mths, intense w/d after 3 weeks. Reinstatement: 07/25/16 - 25 mg; updosed 08/03/16 - 50 mg;  10/01/16-  62mg; 03/24/17 dropped to 50 mg (stable in 2.5 months)

Current psych meds: Trazodone 50 mg

Going to skip it. I'm protective of my GABA receptors. I did use xanax very rarely, but I am staying away from anything with benzo-like affects.

Thanks for the input!

Has anyone else tried lemon balm for anxiety during WD?  My PCP recommended it but she doesn't know much about WD.

Was on Lexapro for 66 days starting in early January.  5mg for a week, 10mg for 3, 7.5 for 3 days, then 5mg and 2.5mg for approx two weeks after.

Was on Lithium for 60 days starting in late January. 1 300mg ER pill a day.  Stopped CT

Was given a .5 ativan script in early Jan.  Took it maybe 20x total from early Jan to beg of June, 2020.

-Fall of 2019:  had two vertigo attacks for the first time with no warning, each followed by 4-5 days of morning dizziness.

-Last Friday of 2019:  had first ever, out of the blue, panic attack.  Went to ER- didn't know what was happening.  Was diagnosed w/GAD, even though had never had anxiety or depression problems before.  Basically no health problems at all prior to this, and in very good shape emotionally, physically, and mentally.

-4 days after panic attack given lexapro.  That's when the hell began.  Was on it 66 days.  Reacted badly to it.  Gave me suicidal ideation 4 wks after starting it, plus exhaustion, off the charts anxiety, dizziness, and fatigue.  Did a fast taper over 5 wks.  Was on it 66 days total.

-been off lexapro completely since mid-March, 2020.  First 3 weeks I got better and better.  Then, week 4 into WD got slammed.  Since then, over 64 side effects/symptoms.  Can't drive.  At times, barely surviving.

-since Jan., have been to the e r 16x.

-was given lithium after experienced SI from lexapro to as a "mood stabilizer".  Never really noticed anything from it, nor anything after stopping it, except for a few days of heightened depression about a week after.

-was given low dosage ativan script 2nd week into lexapro to deal with the anxiety/panic spike caused by the lexapro.  Took it perhaps 20x between Jan and June, 2020.  Always made me feel better, but last time it was taken (early June) experienced intrusive thoughts after so stopped it.  Didn't feel any negative reaction from stopping it, perhaps b/c it was taken so infrequently and the dosage was so low.

Just bumping this thread.  Any more insight into the risks of Lemon Balm? I'm 6 months in WD and tried lemon balm tea during severe anxiety.  It was powerful in a good way and calmed me down significantly.  But, I'm afraid to start taking it if it could create problems down the road. Thoughts?

I've tried a tea called Mindful Moments and it's quite powerful in terms of calming anxiety and on edge feeling but the problem is that it then ends up making me dizzy a bit. It has lemon balm and ashwaganda (camomile) and so not sure which causes the impact. I'm careful in using it. Only steep it for a min and drink it rarely when there's nothing else that works. I'm coming off of SSRI but have noticed that benzos have very strong and negative effects on me now. Even 0.025mg of Xanax (1/10 of smallest dose) makes me nauseous and dizzy while before Xanax was like a magical drug for me in terms of how easily it would calm me down.

I am wondering if lemon balm tea twinings brand is the same as the lemon balm that is talked about here.  I would love to try it but I am on a very low dose xanax and Lamictal both work on the gaba in our brains.  Not sure if the tea has the same effect or ingredients that the above mention of lemon balm oil.

Any thoughts on this would  be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Greatful--Here's a study if it's at all useful:

Herbal Remedies and Their Possible Effect on the GABAergic System and Sleep.

Bruni O, Ferini-Strambi L, Giacomoni E, Pellegrino P.Nutrients. 2021 Feb 6;13(2):530. doi: 10.3390/nu13020530.PMID: 33561990 Free PMC article.

Abstract

Sleep is an essential component of physical and emotional well-being, and lack, or disruption, of sleep due to insomnia is a highly prevalent problem. The interest in complementary and alternative medicines for treating or preventing insomnia has increased recently. Centuries-old herbal treatments, popular for their safety and effectiveness, include valerian, passionflower, lemon balm, lavender, and Californian poppy. These herbal medicines have been shown to reduce sleep latency and increase subjective and objective measures of sleep quality. Research into their molecular components revealed that their sedative and sleep-promoting properties rely on interactions with various neurotransmitter systems in the brain. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that plays a major role in controlling different vigilance states. GABA receptors are the targets of many pharmacological treatments for insomnia, such as benzodiazepines. Here, we perform a systematic analysis of studies assessing the mechanisms of action of various herbal medicines on different subtypes of GABA receptors in the context of sleep control. Currently available evidence suggests that herbal extracts may exert some of their hypnotic and anxiolytic activity through interacting with GABA receptors and modulating GABAergic signaling in the brain, but their mechanism of action in the treatment of insomnia is not completely understood.
