am i hindering healing with the tiny dose of prozac?

You know that we are unable to answer that question.  If only it we could know, it would be so much easier.  Unfortunately, it isn't.  Sorry.

i've been trying to search for success stories of people who reinstated a small dose but haven't come across any yet. i'm rubbish at making decisions at the best of times but find it especially hard since stopping the meds.

tattyapple said they just stopped the small dose - is this the norm or is it safer to taper off if i do decide to stop?

We advise that once you have stabilized on the reinstated small dose to taper off it rather than cold turkey. The dose may be small but these drugs are strong

thankyou. is there any way of knowing when to call it quits or do you keep upping the dose slowly until it reaches what the doctors call a therapeutic level?

"Therapeutic level" is a meaningless phrase concocted by the pharmaceutical industry and parroted by doctors.  It's a made-up dosage that bears no relation to reality.   It's better to get to what we call "minimum effective dose."  There's no way to know what dose will be your minimum effective dose.

There's no real way to know when to call it quits or whether to keep upping your dosage slowly.  That has to be your decision.  Remember that it takes about four days for a dose change to get to full state in the blood and a bit longer to register in the brain.

According to your signature, you started the 1 mg Prozac only 7 days ago, so you might want to give it a little more time.

What time of day do you take 1mg Prozac? What is your symptom pattern before and after you take it?

Please keep daily notes on paper with times of day for when you take your drugs, their dosages, and your symptoms. You can post them in this topic with a simple list format with time of day on the left and notation (symptom, drug and dosage) on the right.

Observing your symptoms is the only way we can tell what it's doing. If it's not doing anything, you might increase the dose slightly. Please post your daily notes here in your Intro topic.

so, this is what's happened over the last 24 hours.

monday 21st january

woke at 5 a.m. (had some intrusive thoughts, slept on and off until 7 am.

took 1.5mg of prozac (upped the dose by 0.5mg as one week had gone by since i started it)

had breakfast

8.30 drove kids to school. slightly anxious, intrusive thoughts.

did housework, cleaned out pets, checked mail online.

12.00 had lunch. feeling more anxious.

spent afternoon checking online for success stories after reinstating. got very anxious about having upped the dosage. didn't mention on here that i'd gone up as i wanted to see what the result would be in a few days.

husband told me off for checking online so much. he pointed out it was my ocd making me check and that i needed to do something else, so went for a long walk. still very anxious.

3.30 picked kids up from school. kids had had a bad day so i got more anxious. tried to do some reading.

5.00 cooked dinner. anxiety very high.

7.00 feeling really tired and have a headache like a tight band around my head and the back of my neck. had a nap on the sofa.

8.00 got kids ready for bed. anxiety is getting much much worse.

spent the evening in a state of panic about various things. tried not to check online. kept coming on here to look for success stories. ocd got worse as the evening wore on. irritable with my husband.

11.00 took thyroxine and amlodipine, magnesium. went to bed but couldn't fall asleep. dozed off after 1 a.m.

kept waking throughout the night because of nightmares. very vivid dreams. kept seeing strange patterns in my sleep which lingered just after waking.

after a disturbed and very scary night got up at 7 am

had breakfast. very dizzy and slightly blurry vision.

haven't had any prozac this morning. very scared to take any more after what happened last night.

not sure what to do now - cut back to 1 mg or stop altogether. i didn't have any problems on 1mg apart from headaches and some dizziness for the first couple of days. could the extra 0.5 mg i took yesterday really have had a bad effect that quickly or did the 1mg i'd taken all week finally kick in? i have no idea but am very scared now.

i've just taken a 1mg dose but i'm not sure whether to carry on with it.

just had to drive to the city and i feel really odd. i had to make the journey really slowly as my eyes are still a bit blurry and i feel my concentration is off. i feel sick, my mouth is dry, i have a headache, and my face feels weird - almost as if someone has their hand over it, if that makes any sense - sort of tight and tingly. i don't feel ill but i do feel 'off' and my anxiety is sky high.

the last time i saw the doctor about my symptoms he sent me for a thyroid check to rule that out.

What was the result of this check?

You need to take the same amount of Prozac at the same time each day. What time do you take it?

I think you made yourself anxious about increasing the Prozac to 1.5mg. Please go back to 1mg and keep those daily notes. We need to see when you take your drugs and your symptom pattern throughout the day.

Did you always take thyroxine at night?

i've been taking amlodipine for a few months (will have to check how long). i don't have any side effects from it that i know of. i was on it when i was still on prozac and didn't have any problems then either, but if depression is a side effect then maybe it was masked by the prozac.

When was the last time your thyroid hormone dosage was adjusted? How do you sleep? What is your usual sleep pattern?

the amlodipine is for high blood pressure. as i said, i take it at night as i forget to take it in the morning and no, no side effects. my thyroid meds have stayed the same for the last decade or so. they're checked once a year and the results have always been the same.

my sleep has been disturbed since giving up prozac. i fall asleep easily but wake up every couple of hours until 5 when i cannot get back to sleep.

I'm glad you are able to sleep at least some, but sorry to hear you have so much anxiety. give yourself time, things will improve but it will take time.

❤️

Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day

Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM  (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut)

Famotidine   once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes)

magnesium 200 mg at night

as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000"

off Lexapro as of 5/2018  - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years

highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

I had exactly the same on reinstating at first - increased anxiety and headaches, but stick with it a while longer. The first improvement I noticed was my sleep got a lot better, so if you’re sleeping better already that’s a good sign

2002 - Prescribed fluoxetine 20mg for mild situational depression and anxiety. Over the years also briefly swapped about on citalopram, sertraline and venlafaxine during poop out. 2012 - Cold turkeyed fluoxetine. Within 3 months was suffering from aggression, anxiety, panic attacks and paranoia. GP put me back on tablets as I was 'relapsing'. I didn't know anything about WD then. Jul 15 - Wanted to quit fluoxetine again so tapered off (skipping doses) over 6 weeks under advice of GP. Aug 15 - Last fluoxetine dose end of August 2015. Dec 15 - Had my first real crash after discontinuing. Found this site. Aug-Dec 16 - Signed off work because of a herniated disc & severe sciatica. Prescribed diazepam (took for 6 days and got WD symptoms on stopping; nausea, morning cortisol spikes, anxiety, anger) and codeine which I was on for 4 mths. Can confirm - opiate WD is nasty but nowhere near as bad or prolonged as SSRI WD!
Withdrawal symptoms have included: extreme anger and irritability, lethargy, depression and weepiness, anxiety, stomach upsets, loss of appetite, excessive sweating, muscle and back pain, insomnia, cortisol surges, akathisia, inability to cope with stress.
Things that help: herbal tinctures (rose, lemon balm, chamomile and skullcap), seaweed baths & epsom salt baths, fish oil and magnesium.

Have you been sleeping better in the past week? Overall, do you feel better or worse than you felt before taking 1mg Prozac?

Do you feel better or worse after you take 1mg Prozac at 7 a.m.?

As it's been 11 days since you started 1mg Prozac and it does not seem to have any adverse effects, do you want to increase it a bit to 1.5mg? We would need to observe to see what it does. This is how you judge dosage for reinstatement.

Hi thecowisback,

I saw the link you posted on another thread on cognitive sleep games. Have you been using them? If you have, have they been helping? I’m really sorry to read your anxiety is so high. Hope you’re coping okay, sending hugs🤗

Been on antipsychotics, benzos, antidepressants and painkillers for chronic pain.

Have been cold turkeyed and put on and off all sorts of things.  Was suicidal n ended up in a psych ward because I had akathisia from withdrawals. I can’t remember what I was put on but when I was released was in the same predicament with severe akathisia n was suicidal again.

Back to the psych ward and I was given a number of different drugs while there. Tapered off one when I got home n have been trying to taper off Seroquel since. It’s been years, tapering slowly but still having severe withdrawals.

I’ve  tapered from 300mg of Seroquel to 7.5mg./ March 10th 2019=7.25mg / 17th of April 2019= 7mg / June 5th=6.75mg/ July 14th=6.50mg/ 28th of August=6.25mg/ 10th of Oct= 6.20mg/ 21st October 6mg/ 16th of December 5.80mg/21st of January 5.60mg/

i've just had 1.5mg. a question - when i drew up the second syringe for the 0.5 i noticed the solution  in the syringe seemed to have much more powder in than the first time i drew it up. i'd shaken the mixture between drawings. does this mean the lower down you get in the bottle the more concentrated the solution? i'm wondering if i need to make a bigger/weaker mixture so the power is more evenly distributed?

To mix, put the cap on the container, tightly, and shake it gently. You will be able to see particles swirling around in the water (some of the filler used in tablets and capsules is insoluble).
