I'm glad to see that things are improving for you and that you've found a reasonably sane doctor.  Wish I could find one of those.

Psychotropic drug history: Pristiq 50 mg. (mid-September 2010 through February 2011), Remeron (mid-September 2010 through January 2011), Lexapro 10 mg. (mid-February 2011 through mid-December 2011), Lorazepam (Ativan) 1 mg. as needed mid-September 2010 through early March 2012

Also glad you've found a doc you respect. That's getting more difficult the more I learn.

How is she testing and treating the yeast overgrowth? If I recall correctly, there isn't a straightforward test.

You've mentioned in a few updates that disruptions to your schedule (or idle time) creates anxiety for you. Have you always been that way or is it due to (or accentuated by) withdrawal?

This may have been mentioned previously, but in case not... I've read that the MTHFR polymorphism / disruption of methylation pathway creates Reverse T3 by not converting T4 to T3 properly. You know far more about thyroid issues, but just thought I'd mention.

I hope all continues to go well, dear Karma!

Pristiq tapered over 8 months ending Spring 2011 after 18 years of polydrugging that began w/Zoloft for fatigue/general malaise (not mood). CURRENT: 1mg Klonopin qhs (SSRI bruxism), 75mg trazodone qhs, various hormonesLitigation for 11 years for Work-related injury, settled 2004. Involuntary medical retirement in 2001 (age 39). 2012 - brain MRI showing diffuse, chronic cerebrovascular damage/demyelination possibly vasculitis/cerebritis. Dx w/autoimmune polyendocrine failure.<p>2013 - Dx w/CNS Sjogren's Lupus (FANA antibodies first appeared in 1997 but missed by doc).

Well, I respect this doctor on most things, and I'm willing to take a look at things differently to see if we can improve things.  I don't think there is a medical professional out there that I can agree with completely.  What generally happens is that I have to find a medical professional that I can work with.  I will have to maintain my network of health care professionals to ensure I have a fall back position in the event we get to an impasse.

This doctor uses bio-meridian to test for yeast overgrowth and identify what can help balance the system ... stuff like garlic and oregano oil can help eliminate yeast without being too stressful on the system.  I realize this is probably a little woo-woo for some people, but it worked for me before and I am willing to try it again.  The last time I had a bio-meridian I wasn't able to implement many of the suggestions because I was still suffering withdrawals from a too aggressive Effexor taper, but it has been nearly 2 years since those withdrawals and I believe I am much more stable.

Disruptions in my schedule do cause additional anxiety for me ... I don't think this was a problem before tapering off of Effexor and experiencing withdrawals.  I think it is a product of withdrawal and I hope that by the time I get to the end of my taper it is all gone.

I completely concur that woo - woo can work. It has for me.... :)

Fall 1995 xanax, zoloft. switched to Serzone

1996- spring 2003serzone/ xanax/ lightbox.

b]Fall 2003- Fall 2004? Lexapro 10 mg. Light box /4 mg. xanax.[/b]

Sept.2012- July 2012 20 mg Lex 300 Well. XL, 4 mg Xanax

My mantra " go slow & with the flow "

3/2/13.. Began equal dosing 5 Xs /day xanax, while simultaneously incorporating a 2.5 % drop ( from 3.5 mg/day to 3.4 mg/day)

4/6/13 dropped from 300 mg. Wellbutrin XL to 150 mg. Difficult but DONE! Down to 3.3 mg xanax/ day / 6/10/13 3 mg xanax/day; 7/15/2013 2.88mg xanax/day.

1/2/2014- ??? Taking a brain-healing break from tapering anything after actively tapering something for 1.5 years. So… daily doses as of 2/2/2014: 18 mg by weight Lex, 150 mg Well. 12 days ago I decremented by slightly more than 7%.  I experienced general anxiety, waking anxiety, difficulty sleeping, low mood and increase ringing in my ears.  Then I progressed to irrational fears and neuro-anxiety.  I was worrying about things that haven't happened yet and couldn't stop myself.  I had some very odd dreams and one was actually a nightmare.  By about 10 days out the waking anxiety started to lift as did the general anxiety and my sleep improved.  I feeling more calm and balanced now.  There are hints the joy is returning.  But the ringing in my ears has remained intense, at least through today.

I am thinking about holding through the end of the year since we are coming up on the holidays.  There is also the possibility that I may be making some adjustments to my supplement regimen or my other medication.

My insurance changes next year (that added to the neuro-anxiety) and my compounded venlafaxine may cost about 3X what it has cost me this year.  So I'm thinking about making my own liquid solution.  I think I will try to get 25 mg tablets from my pdoc and try to make the liquid while I still have access to the compounded liquid so I have a fall back.  But at this moment I can't figure out the math ... do I use 25 mL to 25 mg of medication so that 1 mL is equal to 1 mg?  That seems logical, but validation would be appreciated.

You could. What is the concentration of your compound?

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

56 years old

Hi Karma...the symptoms you just recently experienced I have had recently minus the ear ringing.  It did dissipate like yours did after about ten days.

With the cost of medication and insurance changes I can certainly understand trying the solution.  Alot of us have become Chemists with these meds.

You pass thru phases very courageously....admire that.

Hugs

Hi Meimeiquest

My compounded medication is 2 mg to 1 mL, but that gets a little tricky to measure when one is decrementing by just 1.2 mg or now it will be just 1 mg.

Thank you, Nikki.  I consider that a compliment :) .

Thanks, Tezza!  So, 1 to 1 would be crushing the 25 mg tablet and mixing it in 25 mL water ... right?  Then I can use my 10 cc (10 mL) syringe to draw out, let's say 6.5 mL (6.5 mg) for my next decrement ... does that sound right?

I can flat tear up a spreadsheet with regard to finance and budgeting, but trying to figure out the math around decrementing mg/mL confuses the heck out of me.  Maybe it is because I feel like there is so much at stake if I get it wrong

The other thing is to plan now long to keep the solution.

YUP... I fell afoul of that.  I kept my solutions for 5 days, much to my detriment as it deteriorated and lost potency.  Now I mix no more than 2.5 days at a time for requip, and 1.5 days in advance for Lyrica.  The lyrica seems more unstable than requip, but there is no way to know for sure.

As always, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! A proud supporter of the 10% (or slower) rule.

Requip - 3/16 ZERO  Total time on 25 years.

Lyrica: 8/15 ZERO Total time on 7 or 8 yrs.

BENZO FREE 10/13 (started tapering 7/10)  Total time on 25 years.

I'm not converting to liquid yet but when I do....is that what liquid compounding is?

Just crushing the pill and mixing with water? Is there a video on how to do this? I don't want to make a mistake when I start the liquid.

I'm very sensitized to this drug, just like to make just I will be doing this right the first time.

Hi Lexy

Here is a thread that talks about making your own liquid solution: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2693-how-to-make-a-liquid-from-tablets-or-capsules/

I checked with my compounding pharmacy and they will not make or sell me a pharmaceutical suspension allegedly without a prescription ... but I'm going to try going there in person and talking to the pharmacist who owns the pharmacy.  My only option is using water to make my liquid solution and I don't know how stable that would be.  Plus if I have to travel on my job or for vacation via flight, making my own liquid my be a little bit dicey.

Right now I'm planning on the pricey compounded liquid.  It is in a suspension with a little flavoring and dye so that it is easy to see when drawing it up in a syringe. If your insurance will cover it, compounded liquid from a compounding pharmacy is the way to go.

Oops, sorry for my late reply, Lexy.  I have been occupied by other things and haven't had a chance to check in on SA.  (To all mods - my apologies for being missing.  I will try to jump back in soon.)

@ Lexy - I switched to liquid when I was at about 38 mg.  The reason I switched was because it became too difficult to dry cut my dose.  There are no hard rules.  If you find that it is too much work to dry cut your dose then you could consider switching to liquid.  It is easier to be more accurate with liquid.  I recommend that you switch to liquid at the same dose as your dry cut because liquids may behave differently in the system than tablets or capsules.  Once you feel stable on the liquid, then you can continue your taper.

Hope that helps.

Last week was rough.  I had irrational fears about money and work.  Oddly, Tuesday I felt calm and pretty balanced and then the whole thing ramped up again.  I had my impressions taken on Wednesday to make my new crowns to go on the dental implants I got in July.  I signed up for a no interest payment plan to cover the cost of the crowns because I'm anxious about money and don't want to take it all of savings right now.

The irrational fears have started to lift since yesterday. At this point I am 22 days out from my last decrement.  I think it is the time of year and money triggers that have caused some of the neuro-anxiety.

There are some new opportunities at work, but thinking about going after them makes me anxious.  Is it normal to be anxious about the possibility of changing jobs?  I think so.  But I think I've lost my filter on what is anxious exciting versus what is anxious threatening.  Will that ever normalize?

So yesterday I got out and walked my dog in the morning - we had a good 45 minute walk in the fresh, crisp air.  Today I feel better.  Getting ready to take the dog out for another walk. Windows and waves ... I have to remind myself that eventually I will get back to balanced, calm and joyful.

"Is it normal to be anxious about the possibility of changing jobs?".

It always was for me, even when the new position was clearly a better opportunity. I would be eager and anxious at same time...until I settled in to new position.

Maybe it is because I feel like there is so much at stake if I get it wrong  Karma

I'm sorry I didn't see this! Yes the equal amounts makes measuring very simple. 6.5 mL = 6.5 mg. I mix my a Remeron that way, 15 mg to 15mL of water. It's natural to be anxious about a new job even without WD being in the mix. I think the anxiety (type) filter will normalize again. Neuro-emotions are so confusing but once they settle down, then, we should be able to know the difference in those feelings.I'm glad you feel better today!!!HUGS!!!

Thanks for the validation, Barb.  It is really helpful.

Thanks for this comment, Alto.  It makes me wonder if I should just stay in my current position until I get thru this taper.  I am in an advanced position.  I guess the irrational fear is that if I don't go after these opportunities there won't be any more opportunities later when I'm ready.  Probably a very irrational fear.

Thanks for the reassurance, Tezza.  On some level I know you are right and that my anxiety filter will normalize again, but I really get tired of over-reacting.

Love you guys.

Karma being anxious about the dentist/the cost of the dentist and sitting for dental work is anxiety producing.

Any type of job change, brings on anxiousness.  It's totally normal.

When I drop a dose the worst symptom for me is Neuro-emotions.  When we take into account that we are having neuro-emotions and changes it drives the neuro stuff up the anxiety ladder, and then like you said - it stopped.

Before it abates, it's quite hellish.

Glad you are feeling better.

I went to the pool today in my development.  Moving around in the water and a nice dose of sun does wonders just like walking the dog and getting our hair done....good move:)

Update So, I let the new job possibility go - when I looked deep inside, I realized it wasn't for me.

I did go visit my family for Thanksgiving and though we all lead very different lives ... it was wonderful to enjoy the connection and love of family.  I know that I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to connect with my family and I realize that not all of my friends here have this blessing - I'm just acknowledging that I am blessed in this way and letting the universe know how grateful I am for it.

I've been holding my current dose of venlafaxine for over 50 days.  I love it when a hold results in a sense of calm and the ability to enjoy things.  I put up my Christmas tree last weekend and made gluten free Christmas cookies.  No pressure, just enjoying the season.  This is a significant indication of being stable.

I went to the new doctor I spoke about a little earlier in the thread in late November.  When I met with the bio meridian tech I explained about being hypersensitized by withdrawing from venlafaxine and that I need to take any changes slowly.  She was totally accommodating and offered me choices and a staged plan.  Her plan for moving me from one form of thyroid treatment to another is even slower than other advice I've been given.  I've started the treatment plan and so far I feel balanced.  I'm feeling like this was a good move.

So, Karma is feeling well, experiencing calm and joy.  I am enjoying the season and looking forward to a little more time off between Christmas and New Years.

Happy New Year!  Made it through the holidays!  I enjoyed two full weeks off from work and definitely feel quite relaxed :) .

I went downhill skiing!  The white snow contrasted against the the blue sky with a dazzling sun shinning through in the rocky mountains was just breathtaking.  I thoroughly enjoyed being out in the fresh, clean mountain air.

I've continued to hold my venlafaxine (effexor) dose through the holidays.  I've been holding for about 77 days.  During that time I've made some adjustments with my yeast overgrowth treatment and some smaller adjustments with my sex hormones.  But overall I've felt calm, balanced and joyful :D.

I think my yeast treatment was too aggressive because I started to have some very vivid and somewhat disturbing dreams that resulted in some mild AM anxiety.  I dropped the Caprin for a week and my dreams became slightly less vivid and definitely less disturbing.  So, I returned to the treatment at a lesser dose - we'll see how this goes.  As always, I continue to log my symptoms.

Right now I plan to hold my venlafaxine dose for another 2 weeks and then I'll make an 0.8 mg decrement.  That will be 5.7% decrement.  Onward!

That's great Karma, I'm glad you had a relaxing holiday and feel refreshed.

Is caprin caprylic acid? I have some for my yeast problem but reacted to it too and stopped it.

I didn't associate it with sleep and dreaming but I did start having strange sensations and dreams!

Yes, MammaP it is caprylic acid.  Your experience validates mine.  My nutritionist didn't think caprin had anything to do with the vivid, disturbing dreams, suggesting instead that it was attributable to my reduction of effexor.  But I had held the effexor for over 30 days when I started to notice the vivid dreams, so I was pretty sure it didn't have anything to do with effexor.  Besides that I had not experienced vivid dreams while reducing effexor.  The only other thing we changed was increasing caprin to 2 capsules, 2 times a day.

What confirmed that it was either caprin (or the yeast die-off caused by the caprin) was my result after suspending it for 7 days.  Since my dreams became less vivid and disturbing while off of caprin that pretty much pointed to it.  I restarted caprin, but only at 1 capsule twice a day and my dreams have been reasonable over the last 3 days.  I will continue to monitor my dreams at this dose and see how it goes.

This just goes to show why we should only change one thing at a time and monitor our symptoms.  Otherwise, we don't know which change caused the shift in symptoms.

They told me it was toxic die off too, which made sense but I felt too sick to function so

ditched the caprylic after just a few days and things settled down again. My sleep is all

over the place anyway so didn't think about caprylic affecting it, but looking back I reckon

it did have something to do with it.

Update: I'm good. I held my effexor dose through the holidays for just shy of 3 months.  About 2 weeks into January I reduced by 5%.  I really didn't have any identifiable symptoms from the drop and its been 2 weeks since I made the drop, so I think I'm good now.  I plan to hold for my full 4 weeks and make another 5% drop.

I'm feeling calm, balanced and joyful :)

I notice that sense of pressure or resistance (stress) through my upper body is still happily absent.  I haven't succumb to stress since returning to work  :).  The irrational fears have fallen away and remain banished  ;) and I can feel joy when I see my dog or look at the snow-covered Rocky Mountains :D.

We post when we are struggling, but I also think it is important to post when things are going well ... it will help me if I hit another rough patch to look back and see that I was here ... so I can get here again ... and, it is good for others who are struggling to see that people really can find balance after drugs.
