This is interesting ... the compounding pharmacy told me that the venlafaxine solution is good for 28 days, but since I had to refill early just before Thanksgiving they said that it shouldn't lose too much potency by waiting two days to pick up my next refill ... I wanted to get back to a Friday pick up date. So I used the solution for 30 days, rather than 28 days.

Well, they were wrong  . I felt like I made a drastic decrement by Friday ... I had two emotional meltdowns on Friday and Saturday was a little shaky, too . When I make my normal decrements I sometimes feel off, lacking a little in joy, but I don't have emotional meltdowns.

It was so bad Friday morning I was crying and DH had to hold me ... then on Saturday he offered to drive me so I could run my errands because I hadn't been able to get out of the house Saturday morning ... (I must say I am grateful that DH loves me enough to support me in this manner).

I got my refill on Friday and started the fresh solution Friday night. Today is better, but still not back to normal.

I just wanted to document this so I don't try to stretch my venlafaxine solution in the future.

Hi Karma, that was the pits!! I'm glad you are feeling better now.

Like Barb, I'm very glad to hear your husband is so cool with all this. But contrary to your opinion, this was not a matter of luck! Rather, you were wise in your choice of him, and you both deserve each other. Thanks for sharing, it's a heart warming account.

Peace to you this Christmas. Posted Image

It's amazing, the compounded solution must have very slightly degraded over the month, perhaps in a way that pharmacy science can't even measure. (They compound all these liquids from tested instructions.)

This has happened to me with compounded lamotrigine liquid. There was a definite difference in potency between the old solution and the new one.

Glad you're better, K, and DH is there for you, too.

Update:

I decremented by 2 mg Effexor about 2 weeks ago after holding for just over 6 weeks. My mood has been challenged by the events at work, but overall has been ok. Work has been very stressful.

Sleep has been interesting. I've been able to fall asleep but would wake sometime in the early morning and had been challenged to fall back to sleep. That seems to have improved in the last week and now I fall asleep at the normal time and wake up about 10-15 minutes before my alarm goes off  weird. But I'm sleeping so I'm not complaining.

Tinnitus has been fairly mild to moderate except in the last two days when work has been a little more stressful. I've had moments of screaming tinnitus in the last two days.

Other than that I'm not having any symptoms so I think this is all good news.

I didn't do New Years' resolutions, but I did do New Years' commitments this year. The first commitment was to meditate daily ... I've been keeping that up since Dec 31 with only 3 days that I didn't practice, so that should be a habit by now.

The second commitment was not to work the 50 hour weeks that I had been working for the last two years. So far I've also been able to maintain that commitment ... the best part is that I am not working on the weekend and I really do feel like it sets me up for a more successful work week.

Ok, so that is my Karma update ... hanging in there and making progress.

Sounds like you're on the right track, K.

Maybe it's time to reduce by 1mg rather than 2mg?

I can literally see the deterioration of my ability to cope with stress after a decrement ... then week by week my ability to cope improves.

It isn't clear at the time it happens, but is very evident in retrospect. Now three weeks into the last decrement I am able to relax and realize that I will deal with what comes as it comes ... I don't have to plan today how I will respond to something that "might" happen tomorrow.

Last week I played out conversations I needed to have over and over ... this week I'm not even giving it any energy.

I didn't think work could get any more stressful ... I was wrong ... the person who was helping me is no longer helping me as of next Friday. I am doing the work of 4 people. Management says they don't have any one else to help me and we are under a hiring freeze, so they can't hire anyone to help me. Management needs to get some backbone and fight for their resources. Resume is updated and posted.

Not sure I will take the next decrement at 4 weeks ... but if I do, it won't be more than 1 mg.

Oof, Karma. Yes, this might be a good time to hold.

Update: Well, I'm feeling better.

On Tuesday morning I told my manager that I cannot carry the work load, it is affecting my health and it cannot continue. I totaled up the number of resources required to do the work and listed it out. I asked her which efforts we are not doing until we get resources.

By Tuesday afternoon my manager had named a full-time replacement for the resource who is leaving me on Friday. The new resource is a more highly qualified resource who won't need hand-holding and guidance - I can trust her completely to run with her assignment. In addition, we got a support person to help us with many of the more administrative tasks. It doesn't equal the full set of resources I need, but it puts me in a much better position than I was in before.

I chatted with the resource who will be supporting me beginning next week and just felt the stress melt away. This actually works out better for her, too.

On the way home tonight I think I actually felt joy again :)

I have 4 more days before I'm at the 4 week point on this decrement. If I continue to feel relieved and have moments of joy, I will decrement by 1 mg. If not, I'll hold a little longer.

I took Friday off and still ended up doing several hours of work and answering emails  . Got a response back on one of the resumes I submitted and they want me to answer some screening questions :) and then schedule some time to discuss my background. The questions are what you would expect in a full-on interview and my answers will basically be mini-essays. The up side is that I can think about the answers to these questions and present my best self ... the down side is that it feels like more work  and I need some down time. I feel compelled to respond to the questions, but I'm afraid if I spend all weekend on these responses I'll feel like I worked all weekend and won't be refreshed for the work-week ahead. I don't want to leave my current employer, but they have added another layer of bureaucracy and the working conditions are awful. I felt challenged yesterday and was disturbed by a turn in the story of a TV show I follow. I think these are signs that while I'm functioning quite well (and sleeping well), it is not the time to make a decrement. I'll be holding a bit longer  . Karma

Update

Hi all ... I'm doing really well. I've been busy at work, but it hasn't been crazy like it was in February. I've dropped my dose down to under 20 mg :) . I just dropped another 1.6 mg and I haven't had any reaction on my last two decrements. Even my tinnitus is improving.

I read a book called Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox ... it is amazing what K2 can do for the body. Vitamin K2 helps drive calcium out of the arteries and into the bones and teeth (as long as vitamin D and calcium are present), but it also helps the central nervous system. K2 is good for the vascular system and obviously is necessary for bone health. In the last 3 weeks I've increased my vitamin K2 quite a bit ... K2 may be helping me tolerate decrementing Venlafaxine ... there is no documentation on this, but from what I've read about K2, I think it is possible. I'll document my experience here ... it will be a one-person case study  .

A little bit about the history of vitamin K2: Back when cattle and chickens were grass-fed our diet consisted of an appropriate amount of vitamin K2 ... but since cattle and chickens are now grain-fed we don't naturally get vitamin K2. Dr. Weston Price documented the health of indigenous people who weren't exposed to modern diets. He discovered something in the diet that led to natural health that showed up as nearly perfect teeth. He called his discovery the X-factor ... we now know that the X-Factor is vitamin K2.

Great news Karma,

I hope you continue to feel stable

Started in 2000 - On 150mg most of the time, (but up to 225mg at highest dose for 6 months in the beginning)
Reduced off easily first time - but got depressed (not too much anxiety) 6 months later
Back on effexor for another 9 months.
Reduced off again with no immediate w/d - suddenly got depressed and anxious ++ again 3 or 4 months later.
Back on effexor - this time for 3 years
Reduced off over a month - 6 weeks later terrible anxiety - back on.
Rinse and repeat 4 more times - each time the period before the anxiety comes back got shorter and shorter

Hi Karma, that's so good to hear!!! It's very encouraging!

Very interesting info about K2.

Tinnitus has improved for me too. I'm wondering if it's because my dosing has decreased or if it's from taking B Complex.

Whatever it is from, I'm thankful!

Hope you continue to feel good!

Thanks Barb, Peggy and Tezza!

Barb, if I recall vitamin K2 benefits the brain ... they believe that it can prevent onset of Alzheimers ... you should look into the book I mentioned. It is a quick read and well researched.

Peggy, I hope I continue to feel stable, too. I am encouraged by the complete lack of negative symptoms, but I will continue to monitor my body to ensure that I am decrementing at a pace that allows me to feel well.

Tezza, it is hard to say what could be helping your tinnitus. I didn't even realize that tinnitus could be a symptom of decrementing too fast, but if that is the case, perhaps a lessening of tinnitus is a sign of healing. On the other hand, I am a big fan of B-complex ... I take B-complex 100.

I'm down to 17.6 mg effexor. It has been suggested that I slow down and reduce by just 1 mg at a time ... but I don't know how to do that. I have a 10mL syringe. There are 5 graduations between each mL. My compounded effexor is 2 mg per mL. If I am calculating correctly each graduation is .4 mg ... so at my next reduction should I just do one graduation in the AM and one in the PM for a total of .8 mg?

Will there be a point in time when I will dilute my compounded effexor in water to reduce by smaller amounts?

So, how am I doing? Well, I'm having some free floating anxiety ... work is still stressful though not as bad as it was in February ... I'm not suffering like I have previously, but I'm not feeling the joy that I have before. It's not bad, but it's not as good as it has been.

I know it will get better ... I just need to be patient and keep on a steady course.

Karma,

I'm sorry you're having a little downturn and hope you feel improved soon. I've never heard of free floating anxiety prior to this forum and wonder how it differs from other anxieties for you? I've only had significant anxiety during withdrawal (did not realize the source back in 2008). Your comment on Rhi's thread struck a chord with me:

I am having some free floating anxiety, too right now. I am off work for the next week and I appear to be anxious about not having the structure of work to lean on  . Well, that's all I can associate it to ... otherwise it is free floating anxiety.

I've been unscheduled / unstructured for many years, but the only time I've felt this FFA and inability to feel grounded is during withdrawal or cold switches.

Karma,

I'm sorry to hear you're having some trouble, now. I hope it passes when you get back to work.

If you wouldn't mind making your next taper slightly less than 1 mg, I think your idea would be the simplest solution. Another solution might be to use two syringes, one being the 1mL syringe.

I really do hope you feel better soon.

Hugs and lotsa love!

If you're getting Effexor compounded, you can have it compounded 1:1 to make measurement a little less confusing.

You can also get a smaller syringe with smaller divisions so you can measure the tenths. They come in 5mL, 2mL, and 1mL.

Hi Barb,

You are always welcome on my thread :) . I had seen free floating anxiety mentioned a couple of times and had to look it up myself. As I understand it, it is anxiety for no specific reason. I think my weekend anxiety was about not having the structure of work this week, but it could have been my anxiety latching on to something. I imagine a cartoon of anxiety (like a gray cloud with eyes and stick fingers) pointing to my work calendar which is empty this week  .

Thanks Tezza and Alto,

I didn't even think about asking the compounding pharmacy to make my solution at 1:1. I could do that. I could also ask if they have a smaller syringe ... I think I will make a note to do that with my next refill.

I do have a smaller 1 mL syringe ... but it doesn't seem to work as well as the 10 mL syringe. It doesn't have the right sized nozzle and it doesn't have sufficient suction to pull the solution into the body of the syringe ... perhaps the pharmacy has a 5 or 2 mL that will work.

For now ... holding this decrement. Oh ... on an interesting side note ... that partial decrement of Xanax was a year ago ... and I have successfully stayed at 0.75 mg  .

Update

I've had to hold longer than I wanted to unsure.gif . You know how we tell people to be careful with supplements ... I found that super green food falls in that category, too. Super green foods are usually powdered mixes full of vegetables, but may have other supplements in them that we can react to. You mix them in protein shakes or with water.

I tried a super green drink, one that had a certificate that it was gluten free (had a certificate that it only had 4 ppm of gluten, which is technically gluten free). I'm still trying to get my pH balanced to help my bones. Anyway, I log my symptoms daily so I can catch symptoms when they start to go downhill. I noticed I started getting anxiety within the first week trying the drink. I stopped the green drink for about 4 days and felt better - tried it for one more day and the anxiety was nearly instant. It wasn't disabling, but it was definite. No more green drink for me  .

Also had some basic labs run ... iron appears to be high ... I will retest because I've had lab errors with my iron labs before. What I've learned is that high iron is as bad as low iron when it comes to the body utilizing thyroid. If my iron is high this could be contributing to the anxiety and lack of joy.

That means that I won't be decrementing again until my anxiety is settled and I find some joy. The good news here is that I recognize the state I'm in and rather than blindly hurrying off of Effexor I'm holding and optimizing everything else so I don't end up in serious withdrawal.

One note for me and others reading my thread ... I have reduced from 375 mg of Effexor down to 17.6 mg Effexor ... yes it has taken some time, but I work full-time at a stressful, albeit fulfilling job and I am still making progress. I only get into trouble when I don't listen to my body.

Good going, Karma, even if you had to hold a bit longer than you wanted. You've taken such a sane, safe approach to your tapers, you're a good example to the rest of us.

May you feel better and better!

Nice to hear from you Karma....Interesting how you noticed a difference, stopped tried again and the symptoms returned.

I do the green drink and I add it to juicing. I am okay with it. Today tried Evening Primrose Oil and felt calm. Maybe too soon to tell, but I was okay.

Do you take Fish Oil or Primrose Oil. If so, how do you react?

You have come a long way.....marvelous newsz :)

Hi Nikki

I use Krill Oil ... I take 1500 mg AM and another 1500 mg PM. I find it helps reduce anxiety. No negative side effects that I've noticed and I've been taking these doses for over a year.

Hi all - I'm holding at 17.6 mg.  I need to have some dental work done and they characterize it as oral surgery ... so I think I need to stay stable on my AD so I don't set myself up for possible withdrawals.

I checked and the medications they use include, Amoxicillin/Cephalexin, Chlorhexidine 0.12% oral antibiotic, Vicodin/Percocet, Ibuprofen, and Medrol Dospak. I may not need the narcotic pain killer, but the antibiotic is given to prevent infection.  I just don't want to have a reaction like I had in the fall of 2011 with Cipro.  I'm going to request a consult with the surgeon and let him know I am sensitive to medications, but I'm not confident that he/she will get it.  Anyone know if any of these can cause heightened withdrawal?

In the meantime while pondering the dental work, my dog was badly injured and it really created a major change in how I feel about my life.  All this time I thought my work was so important and that I had to put all of these hours in - there was no joy and I couldn't find my emotional balance ... now it is all about helping my dog to get well and caring for her.  I've been working from home so that I can tend to her every 2-3 hours ... and I hate working from home.  But I'm just taking one thing at a time and not getting all caught up in what comes next.  I'm not resisting the fact that I have to work from home to care for my beloved animal.  I'm sorry that my dog had to be hurt in such a serious way for me to find my priorities, but I am grateful that I am stable enough that I am able to handle this and do what needs to be done.  In a way it is good to know that when there is a crisis I can still handle it.

Karma,

I'm so sorry about your dog. :( Sending healing thoughts..

Hugs.
