I finally got the help I was promised at work and she started working with me just in time for my vacation. She did a great job of managing everything while I was gone. I did monitor my cell phone and responded to a few emails, but felt confident that my new resource had it covered. It was a new world for me when I came back and things weren't piled up for me to handle. I got to keep my "vacation glow" a few days . Oh, and flying with a liquid prescription wasn't a problem - they tested it for vapors, it passed, and they sent me on my way  . It has been over 5 weeks since the last Effexor decrement and I don't think I had any symptoms at all. I didn't reduce any more due to traveling. When I got back I felt weird ... drowsy in the AM, brain fogged and very cold ... for me these are hypothyroid symptoms. I checked my average daily temperatures and sure enough they are hanging around 98.0 degrees - should be closer to 98.6. So, I'm adjusting thyroid treatment. I won't decrement again until I get to feeling balanced with my thyroid. So, that's my update. I'm really glad I got the vacation in. I was really stressed out. Now onward ... I'll get the thyroid balanced, decide whether I need to change the delivery of my HRT and then back to tapering off Effexor. Love and light, Karma

Karma,

I recently came across literature about premature gray hair as risk factor for osteopenia. Likely not a surprise to you, but wanted to mention.

This doctor sounds reasonable:

I hope you're doing well.

My bone specialist used the FRAX scale and didn't think I had significant fracture risk when I was originally diagnosed with Osteopenia. Unfortunately now I am definitely in Osteoporosis (one of my T scores was -3) ... but I really believe that it has everything to do with my diet and the fact that I've been existing with low grade acidosis. We'll see if there are any significant changes in my next labs due to the changes I've made. I think I'm doing all the right things to improve my bone density. I've read speculation that they came up with Osteopenia just so they could market their drugs to a wider audience (and I believe it) ... (who me, skeptical? ) Last Friday I dropped another 3 mg on my Effexor dose ... I haven't noticed any side effects from the reduction. Current plan is to hold for three weeks and drop again. All is well. Thanks for sharing this information, Barb - I hope all is well with you. Karma

Karma,

I agree. Everything I read now, I do so with the question "what is this info promoting?" and "what will I do with this info/test result?"

Mostly, I find the correlations and early warning signs interesting. I started going gray at 20. I now see the strong autoimmune/endocrine correlation with melanocytes, vitiligo, gray hair, (pigment loss).

Hi,

It is good to hear that you're doing well on current taper. It feels good to reach the somewhat comfort zone while going through WD. I'm happy for your success!

I wish even speedier recovery for your neurontin taper, hope it goes as smooth for you as it has for me. Just be stabilized before you start and I'm sure you'll be fine. Still, you already know to listen to your body.

Lotsa love and light, to you Karma! We're gonna beat these beasts and come out on top. Slow and easy...

Love,

"Thank you" Karma. {{{HUGS}}} I may never have insisted on the liquid Risperdal if not for the encouragement you and Alto gave. Then, suddenly I remembered having that tiny 1mL syringe and only after the two of you posted that I SHOULD INSIST on it. I remember how excited I was that I'd be able to show it to my GP and prove that I, indeed could do this. And Alto was correct when she said docs didn't know about that syringe size.(Yes they are that stupid, Alto said and it's true) Anyway, I'm so glad for all the support you've given me.

Ok, was not doing as well as I thought I was. I didn't have the dread or irrational fears, but I did have low self-esteem, felt flat, no joy, and had doubts about my ability to function at work. On Friday, I started to feel better - I started to see the possibilities and realize that there are all sorts of possible outcomes to the future ... which is different from the fear-based place I was earlier in the week. I started to feel productive at work and feel comfortable in the space I occupy. I was able to function all week, it just wasn't comfortable and joyful. I slept well and was able to exercise. I think this low self-esteem and flat feeling are withdrawal symptoms for me.

I was listening to something on the radio and heard someone say you need to live in the present, not the future and not the past and it really resonated with me. After that I noticed that I was feeling more sanguine.

It appears that for now I will need stick with decrementing every 3 weeks. That is one week of withdrawals and 2 weeks to stabilize. Well, that's my plan.

Love and light,

Karma

Hey Karma,

I'm just the same about staying in the present, btw. It's a big thing in AA, one day at a time and all that... AA philosophy has impacted me by osmosis, I think. But it's good, serene advice: Plan for the future but live in the present. Fixating on wreckage from the past or insecurity of the future takes one out of the present and into a place of powerlessness. Or so the line of thinking goes..

Looking back at your thread, it's really amazing how well you've handled this adversity. It seems your ability to adjust and compensate when you need a little more yin or a little more yang are a true blessing for you. A lot of people, nevermind neurodisruption due to w/d I just mean everday people, lack your perspective & adabtability, IMO. If I were you, the generl state of confused helplessness I see so often in others would probably annoy me a bit... I think it does annoy me, but I'm speculating about you right now, ha ... :-)

How's the calcium/bone stuff coming?

If you wouldnt wind sharing, what meds and supps do you take? I am about to get back word on my reverse t3 which was high the first two times. If it is high again, I may be prescribed T3. I also will learn results of a battery of hormone tests and some form of HRT may be recommended. Know you've been down a somewhat similar road and I wonder how well you feel your protocol is helping (minus the ongoing and, presumsably still puzzling bone/calcium problem...) ?

best,

Alex

I'm drowning in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me.

Everybody's moving, if they ain't already there
Everybody's got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now."

Hey Alex! No, the helplessness doesn't annoy me ... one of my strengths is empathy, so rather than being annoyed I try to figure out how I can help the person find their way. Another of my strengths is that I can see patterns and how things conspired together for a certain result. That frequently helps me find the right thing to say to someone to help them find their path.

So I did run a CTX which tests for collagen turn over which represents bone turnover. My result is over the high end of the range, but improved by nearly 200 points in just three months. I interpret that to mean I'm on the right track, but that it will take time ... doesn't everything  . I also ran a CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel) and both my sodium and potassium are in the high end of the range ... finally. What that means is that my system isn't leaching minerals from my bones like it was before ... before I couldn't get my sodium above the low end of the range.

I believe that the strict alkaline diet is helping and that the Lactoferrin is helping (Lactoferrin is a supplement that helps to decrease resorption and increase bone formation. I was taking vitamin K2, but decided that I'm getting enough of that with all the greens I'm eating. I still take between 800-1000 mg magnesium glycinate, but I'm not taking calcium right now because my serum calcium is 10.2 which is the high limit of the range ... that is, I think I get plenty of calcium from the food I eat. Greens are very high in calcium.

I take ... (make sure you are holding on to something) ... I take 100 mcg T3 which is the equivalent of 4 grains of thyroid hormone (a full replacement dosage). My docs do think that it is effecting my bones, but they understand that if I lower it I get low grade depression, irritability and fatigue and I'm not willing to go there. I take Pacifica Spirulina (two tablets a day and I'm working up to four), about four digestive enzymes with each meal, HCL with breakfast and dinner, 800 IU liquid vitamin D, B-100 complex, 1500 mg Krill Oil AM and PM, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone with chrysin, 250 mg lactoferrin AM and PM - I also take hydrocortisone multi-dosed throughout the day to support my adrenals ... it does shut down the adrenals and it isn't a treatment for everyone, but for me it made all the difference in being able to utilize thyroid. I replicate the diurnal pattern of my normal cortisol. Once I'm off of the antidepressants I will wean off of the hydrocortisone. In the meantime it is very positive that I can walk and workout mildly without having any symptoms of adrenal fatigue - it means my adrenals are healing.

Everyone is different, but I'm pretty sure that my diet has caused chronic low acidosis for decades and that has been leaching the calcium out of my bones, thus causing the loss of bone density. Before I went on vacation I was solidly alkaline based on testing my urine with pH test strips on the first urine of the morning. From what I've read I need to eat 70-80% alkaline for 90-180 days to help create an alkaline reserve in my system and then I ought to be able to be a little more lenient on that diet - so more 60% alkaline/40% acid. I'm also ensuring that I perform weight-bearing exercise to stimulate the osteoblasts in my bones. If all that doesn't result in more bone density I'll look into taking Strontium and possibly some additional calcium. The jury is still out on whether changing the media of estrogen replacement with help or not (doc thinks yes, I think no).

What else can I tell you?

Come to think of it, you're one of the most emphatic people around, so your response fits with exactly what I've seen on this board. I almost feel bad that I implied annoyance... But I was just kidding around. That said, I do aim to help people myself but I also tend to be impatient with others, slow learners and repeat offendders... Not that I'm in much of a position to help others at this moment; Im pretty laid out, but someday I will.

Thats great news that your sodium and potassium are back in range. Congrats! Eating alkaline is something I'm not entirely familair with other than I imagine a lot more veggies than red meat and dairy. If you've got a diet that is working for you that's awesome. Diet has been a stumbling block for me.

You've referenced how terrible you felt before you found a proper diagnosis and medication level for your thyroiditis. My therapist, my intern-therapist with whom I did CBT, suffered from adrenal fatigue and for a long time could find no help through conventional doctors. She eventually ended up losing a year of her life to exhaustion before finding some help and being diagnosed with Hashi;s and adrenal exhaustion. She had to do a lot of the leg work on her own, something you've referenced as well. Parenthetically, how did people live past 40 before there was an internet? By relying on the local doc?!? Maybe things really were better in the old days like my grandma used to say...

I was curious about the vitamin D. Did you notice any particular effect when you started it? Its been a weirdo on me... Do you have any hypersensitive reactions due to your reduction in psych meds?

Also, your early hypothesis of hypothyroidism (for me) may turn out right on the nose. While it's a manageable condition, the thought of getting sick while in w/d has always been a fear trigger. Seeing your determination is a great inspiration.

Hang in there.

I was taking vitamin D before I started weaning off of Effexor so I didn't have any issue with hypersensitivity. I don't recall that I felt any particular effect from starting to take vitamin D because I was working on resolving yeast overgrowth and going to a gluten free diet at the time. Ultimately I did start to feel better, but I cannot attribute it to one specific thing.

Vitamin D is considered a prohormone - here is a quick article about it - http://www.psychoneuroendocrinology.com/articles/vitamin-d.html. I think this is why when people are hypersensitive from antidepressant withdrawals vitamin D can cause reactions. It is because there are so many vitamin D receptors throughout the system and it is likely that AD patients are low in vitamin D.

Trying to figure out an alkaline/acid diet is difficult. I've read four different books about balancing system pH and they vary on which foods are alkaline producing and which are acid producing. The book that seemed to have the best science proved to be wrong <_< . I've had to use the books as guidelines and then test to see how my system reacts to the foods I eat. I seem to have figured it out to some degree.

One reason people survived past 40 before the internet is that our diet was healthier (in the 70's beef cattle ate grass and weren't in concentrated feeding lots that breed disease - grass fed cattle produce omega-3 fats rather than omega-6 fats), we weren’t eating as many genetically modified organisms, we ate far less sugar and no high fructose corn syrup, we were more active, fewer drugs were pushed and up until Abbott labs starting pushing their inferior T4-only synthetic thyroid treatment people with thyroid issues were treated based on symptoms with natural desiccated thyroid to the cessation of symptoms. (Here is some information about Synthroid by Dr. John Lowe, http://www.healthyhabitz.org/Synthroid.htm).

Ok, now I'll step down off of my soapbox  .

Wow. The overuse of drugs came to mind, but the T4 over T3 is eye opening. I have always argued that'it makes no sense to supplement T4 when T3 is the usable form. There was a time in the 1990s when there was a push to use T3 for "depression". Knowing what I do now, I suspect that was squelched by pharma because natural T3 is not patentable. Abbott didnt own Synthroid back then. I think they acquired it in the 2000s.

The more I learn, the more disturbing this all becomes.

Oh, thanks so much, Tezza. I had an off day yesterday and then forgot to take my gabapentin last night ... oddly I didn't really have any reactions from missing the gabapentin last night, but I took half a dose this morning anyway to avoid any symptoms through the day.

It made me think of you and your successful taper off of gabapentin and I wondered if I would be able to taper off of it. I don't think right now is the time, but I think it was a positive indication that I'll be able to get off of it when I'm ready.

Update:

I am 24 days into a 3 mg decrement of liquid effexor and 6 days into switching to an estrogen patch. I've had sense of feeling challenged, and really "no joy" since I decremented the effexor. But it hasn't been bad ... until the last 3 days. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to switch to the estrogen patch at this point in time ... I though it might provide consistent estrogen and help with my mood.

Starting 3 days ago I started to have some anxiety. Yesterday the anxiety was a little worse and today it was so bad it was distracting and I couldn't focus this morning. I changed the patch on Friday and I think I might have put the estrogen patch in the wrong place and my body isn't getting the estrogen it expects, so I took my bi-est dose on top of the patch today and this afternoon I do feel a little relief - I've been able to focus. It could be coincidental.

I wrote to my NP who manages my sex hormones to get her impression of whether I should stay with the patch or just fall back to the bi-est. The whole reason for the switch is because the bone doctor thinks it will help with my bone density. I'm just having difficulty believing that. I guess it wouldn't be such an issue but for the last 3 weeks I'm not seeing the results I want from my alkaline/acid testing and I don't know what else to do to help my bones.

On top of all that I am thinking about applying for a different job at work because I just haven't been that happy with what I am currently assigned to. I feel jealous whenever I find out someone else is getting to do work that I believe I would like to do. My fear is that I won't be able to trust myself to do the work on the new job - can you say low self-esteem? But I am going to talk to one of the hiring managers tomorrow to get some information about the position. I haven't actually applied to the job and I'm all anxious about it. Oh, and when I think about taking the different job then I start to worry about what people will think of me who depend on me in my current assignments. The only way to keep the anxiety at bay is not to think about it and that is hard to do when one is trying to write a cover letter.

Does anyone think this is related to the Effexor decrement? My plan is to stay at the current dose of Effexor and see what the NP has to say about the estrogen. I'm seriously thinking about blowing off the patch for now and sticking with the bi-est.

Sorry, I'm not the calming Karma you all expect, but I'm really feeling challenged. I know that I will get beyond this, I just need a little help to get through this rough patch.

Love and light,

Karma

Hugs, Karma. We love you as you are.

The increased anxiety could be from the Effexor decrement or the estrogen change. Is the patch an equivalent amount of daily estrogen? Estrogen has a withdrawal syndrome too, believe it or not.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

That was a fast reply, Alto - THANKS.

My NP said that a .05 mg patch would be equivalent to my daily troche dose, but the bone doctor prescribed the 0.025 mg patch. When I read the patch web site it makes no sense to me. My NP thought I could try the 0.025 mg patch and supplement it with the troche, which makes me think it is less than the daily dose I was taking. But I've just been using the patch. The bone doctor is difficult to get a hold of.

I don't like the idea of using the troche along with the patch because I don't know if my insurance will pay for both.

You might use the troche to taper down to the level of the patch. Can you cut it up?

Yes, I can cut up the troche - its got a waxy consistency. What do you mean to use the troche to taper down to the level of the patch? Don't I need to get stable right now? Are you suggesting that I get to a stable level with the troche and then taper down to the equivalent of the amount of the patch and the switch to the patch?

Thanks

Hey Karma,

My guess is that your feelings are definitely related to one or both of the changes you mentioned (patch, AD reduction).

I know that when I notice a big change in my feelings, I can usually find a change I've made in my self-care program that times to it. And when I find myself thinking about making changes (noticeable increase in job dissatisfaction, relationship satisfaction, etc.) I know I should remind myself of how much my neurohomones influence my thinking/feeling and how easily these are influenced during an Effexor taper, even a measured one like yours. And then throw in the hormones and dietary changes over the last several weeks.

I definitely support you Karma and I don't expect your taper and to be easy and handsfree because you offer help to others on the forum. You're in this too! So big hugs. My moments of uncertainty seem to last forever and they are so dang uncertain. I think it's a symptom of the process.

Hugs again!

Karma,

Im sorry youre experiencing the anxiety and uncertainty. That's alot of change at once plus job stressors. When I was in hospital, they didnt have the Vivelle dot patch and gave me same dose of Estrace patch and I really noticed my mood dive and then pick up a bit when I put my Vivelle back on. I'm considering asking endocrine for higher dose of estrogen.

Im foggy right now and dont have any great advice. Just BIG BIG HUGS for you. You're a dear, giving person. May all of the positive energy you've sent out come back to you 100fold!

Love,

B

Thanks so much for the hugs and good thoughts Alex and Barb. I think that I need to get the estrogen balanced and leave the Effexor where it is for now.

Sounds like a good plan, Karma. Estrogen (and all hormones) modulate neurotransmitters, as I'm sure you know. To play with both is similar to adjusting dosages of 2 psychoactive drugs at once. Powerful substances!

Consensus is that it is the patch. The NP says I put it in the wrong place to absorb. She thinks I should reposition it correctly and even consider using 1-1/2 patches to give it a try.

I ripped the patch off this morning and just went directly back to my previous dose of the bi-est troche. I think I need to find my balance before I try any more gymnastics with the patch.

Anxiety was so bad this morning that I needed a rescue dose of .25 mg Xanax. It worked and I am hoping that I will be ok enough to get through the day.

I haven't had a chance to look at the link, Barb, but I will and I appreciate it.

Karma,

Where is the best place to position the patch? I have it on my pelvis area (per directions) and didn't realize there was such great difference with transdermal placement.

RE: studies.. seeing Dr. Stahl refer to estrogen as "a psychotropic drug" was eye-opening to me.

Feel better, Karma.

I use a Menostar estrogen patch. You stick it somewhere on your belly. It doesn't matter that much where you put it.

My NP said that a .05 mg patch would be equivalent to my daily troche dose, but the bone doctor prescribed the 0.025 mg patch. When I read the patch web site it makes no sense to me. My NP thought I could try the 0.025 mg patch and supplement it with the troche....

The patches are calibrated to release xx mg per day. If you are taking .05mg orally and then switch to a .025mg patch, you've cut your dose in half (at least, not sure what's the difference in absorption).

My suggestion was you use maybe a quarter of a troche with the patch, which would give you 75% of your dose, more or less, until your system accommodates to the decrease, then go lower with the troche. Same as tapering.

Your NP's suggestion of 1.5 patches is the same idea.

Hi Karma,

I can give you absolutely no advice on your patch/hormone dilemma - but i am sending calming vibes to you anyway.

I am still not experiencing joy either since my increase of 18 days ago, but the anxiety is thankfully almost completely gone - but i know exactly how you feel. It's almost demoralising isn't it? Whenever i get over my anxiety and find joy again, i find it hard to believe it (the anxiety) was that bad, and surely i could have managed it....

Started in 2000 - On 150mg most of the time, (but up to 225mg at highest dose for 6 months in the beginning)
Reduced off easily first time - but got depressed (not too much anxiety) 6 months later
Back on effexor for another 9 months.
Reduced off again with no immediate w/d - suddenly got depressed and anxious ++ again 3 or 4 months later.
Back on effexor - this time for 3 years
Reduced off over a month - 6 weeks later terrible anxiety - back on.
Rinse and repeat 4 more times - each time the period before the anxiety comes back got shorter and shorter
Jan - July 2012 75mg down to 37.5mg;, 8/3/12 - 35mg. 8/25/12 - 32mg. 9/11- 28mg, 10/2 - 25mg, 10/29 - 22mg, 11/19 - 19.8mg; 12/11 - 17m,
1/1- 15.5mg; 1/22 -14mg, 2/7 14.9mg, 2/18 - 17.8mg - crashed big time: back to 75mg where i sat for 2 years....

4th  March 2015 - 67.5mg;   31st March - 60mg;  24th April - 53mg; 13th May - 48mg; 26th May - 45mg;  9th June - 41mg; 1 July- 37.5mg; 20 July - 34mg; 11 August - 31mg; 1st Sept - 28mg;  1st Dec - 25.8mg;  28th Dec - 23.2mg; 23rd Jan-21.9mg; Feb 7th- 21mg; March 1st - 20.1mg, March 30th - 18mg

I just don't know how I would get through these rough patches without this community! Posted Image

Barb, my bone doctor told me to place the patch on my backside ... evidently he meant the upper backside, but he didn't make that clear and I placed it on my lower backside. Alto is correct, it should be placed on the belly/abdomen. My NP believes that I placed it on a large muscle and therefore was basically not getting enough/any of the estrogen from the patch.

That link Barb provided on estrogen is eye-opening. I do recall that when I got my estradiol up after it having been in the tank that I did feel a lift in my mood. My NP is going to be on vacation in the middle part of August and she suggested that I get balanced and then we can try it again when she is back so she can help me ... I appreciate her willingness to help especially since she isn't the prescribing doctor.

The only problem is that the bone doctor wants to test a bunch of stuff in September and it probably doesn't make any sense if I haven't been taking the treatment he prescribed. Maybe I'll call them and discuss it with them.

Feeling better this evening ... hoping I can fall asleep on my own and not have anxiety tomorrow.

Thank you again to all of you who posted messages of encouragement, it really did help me today.

Ok, whew. It was the estrogen patch. Last night I fell asleep easy, slept well, woke once and fell back to sleep and then woke up refreshed this morning. Very little anxiety this morning and no need for any rescue dose of xanax. I'm so glad that passed.

Now I'll get balanced on my previous estrogen media and then will look at my next move. I'm going to wait to try the patch until my NP is back so that I can rely on her if something goes south.

I think I'm going to increase my Spirulina supplement up to a total of four tablets this weekend because I'm still trying to get my system more to the alkaline side.

Just wanted to let you know that I made it through the major anxiety. Thanks for all of your support.

Spoke too soon - woke with a bit of anxiety this morning. It didn't fade as the morning went on and I got more anxious. I'm going to add a little more estrogen and see if that helps ...

I just want to feel "normal" again. I'm really tired of anxiety.
