My heart goes out to you, and your beloved pet.

I am so sorry that that happened :(

I wish speedy healing for you both, as well as well being.

Blessings ..xx ..Lexi

Hello,
I am tapering Lorazepam, and my daily dose is 1.125 mgs.

I followed a long hold for 5 months, ( Nov-March 2019) hoping to find some stability,

but it did not work. So I resumed my taper and hold pattern.
For the last 3 years, I have been using a daily microtaper, cutting .001mgs per day, with holds as needed.
Symptoms are head pressure, labored breathing, palpitations, abrupt surges of dizziness, this being my worst symptom for now, internal tremors, my latest nemesis, unsteadiness, anxiety, plus many other symptoms that cycle in, and cycle out consistently. Not a day passes, without grief :(

I take no other meds.

January 2013 - 15 day quick taper off 10 mgs of Lexapro, and 25 mgs of Sertraline,

at a detox clinic.

Karma,

I believe adrenal insufficiency is associated with multiple chemical sensitivity. Your oral surgeon may be more understanding of that reason to be cautious with meds. Also, the one oral surgeon I went to wanted my endocrinologist to give me a medical release which included corticosteroid levels. Just FYI.

Hi all, thank your for your caring thoughts and well wishes for my dog.

My dog is doing so much better.  Her wounds are healing and she is acting like her old, happy, energetic self.  Her appetite has returned and she is eating her own food.  She and my husband have gone for short walks the last two days and she no longer seems to have a limp.  Her right back leg is still swollen some, but it has improved ... hopefully she won't need another surgery and we are on our way to healing completely.

Thanks for the thoughts on adrenal insufficiency and chemical sensitivity, Barb.  I certainly hope the oral surgen understands being sensitive to medications ... but for now my dental work is on hold until the dog is better.  Otherwise, there is too much for me to keep up with.

I am actually allergic to my dog ... but somehow during the crisis portion of this incident I didn't have any reaction.  Friday I started to notice a rash on the inside of my forearms.  Yesterday it got worse.  So I got some benadryl.  Individual tablets seemed to work and didn't make me drowsy, but this morning I noticed the rashed looked pretty bad and I took a full adult dose of bendryl.  It flat knocked me out.

I noticed we have a thread that says we should avoid benadryl ... hopefully I will only suffer drowsiness and no other side effects.  I won't be taking benadryl again, at least not at a full dose.

Update

I'm feeling GREAT! No unnecessary anxiety and no low moods. I've been holding my Effexor dose for coming up on 100 days in preparation for oral surgery.  It makes me wonder what the rush is to get off of the medicine :) .  (I still want off, but I have a great deal of patience right now ;) ).

I tweaked my thyroid medication up by just 6.25 mcg 21 days ago and it made all the difference in lifing my mood.  I've felt great ever since.

My oral surgery is a week from Friday and after I recover from that I will start decrementing again.

I don't know whether to continue with my wean off of Effexor or to try and reduce the gabapentin for awhile.  I'm thinking maybe I could work on a 10% wean off of 100 mg gabapentin and that would leave me with just 100 mg.  Not sure ... might be better to just keeping plugging away at the Effexor.

Just wanted to share some good news ... we do heal.

Great news Karma!  :D

July 2001 prescribed 20mg citalopram for depression;
On and off meds from 2003-2006.
February 2006 back on 20mg citalopram and stayed on it until my last attempt at tapering in September 2011.
By far the worst withdrawal symptoms ever. Reinstated to 20mg citalopram
October 2012 - found this forum!
Nov 2012 to Feb 2013 did 10% taper, got doen to 11mg - was going great until stressful situation. Cortisol levels hit the roof, hideous insomnia forced me to updose to 20mg.
March 2016 - close to 100% back to normal!

Lest you think its all hearts and roses with Karma ... on Monday I think I started a mild wave :( .  Not terrible, just a little more anxiety and I seem to have lost some of my joy, feel a little off balance and not quite as calm.  It's ok and I keep going ... but wanted to document this as much for my own benefit as anyone following my thread.

I had 25 straight days of feeling joy, balance, and calm ... and life was great.  I know I can get there again ... and I know that there will be off days, too, and that is ok.

For those animal fans, my dog is doing great! :D She has basically completely healed and just needs to re-grow the fur where they shaved her for her stitches.  We've been taking long walks and she isn't limping or dragging the leg that was traumatized at all.  We are so blessed to still have her in our lives!  She is amazing.

Hi Karma! So glad to hear how well your pup is doing.

And your results from your long hold are just like mine when I do one. That's reassuring and confirming to me (particularly since I so often advise long holds to people). When I've held for long times (like over a month and a half usually) I really get to feeling noticeably better, just like you describe. It's so lovely and so reassuring that one day I may feel that way most of the time!

But I do get those light waves, too.

Still, if that's the best it ever gets for me, I could live with it. So much better than the past 21 years.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease". Long story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything. Amitryptiline, Prozac, bupropion, buspirone, flurazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, Paxil, citalopram, lamotrigine, gabapentin...probably more I've forgotten.

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Update:

After holding for 117 days I decremented my effexor dose by 7% 12 days ago and have had virtually no withdrawal symptoms at all.  I had the slightest increase in tinnitus, but not enough to really bother me.  Otherwise, I've been feeling very balanced, joyful and calm :).

From my perspective a long hold was very beneficial.

Yay Karma! Glad to hear it.

What wonderful news Karma .. :)

I admire your courage .. :)

Keep up the great work ..Sending love your way,

Lexi

Hello,
I am tapering Lorazepam, and my daily dose is 1.125 mgs.

Terrific news.  Nothing like a long hold to 'reset' WD symptoms.  CONGRATS!

Hi all

The record flooding in Colorado has been all over the national news and evidently the international news ... so I wanted to post to let you know that my husband, pets and I are safe.

My home is on high ground and we have a sump pump that pumps the water out below my basement as the water table rises so my home doesn't have flooding. My work has not been effected either and the roads I travel have been safe.

I'd like to say that I'm high and dry, but after 3-1/2 days of constant rain ... pretty much nothing is dry around here  ... well, ok, inside my home we are high and dry :) .

We are praying for our neighbors in the state who have lost their homes ... we will have a long recovery ahead.

I'm also glad to hear you were not affected by the flood.

I've been holding at 48.75mg holding on Effexor immediate release. Im getting headaches, mood

Swings, i even felt return of anxiety, not sure if it was due to

Severe headache at the time, because the anxiety lessened when my headache dissipated

A little.

After reading your post I'm encouraged to hold longer. I now understand

It will take me a lot longer than I expected to get off venlafaxine but to be able to feel better or be

Functional tat what I have to do.

Thanks

Hope to hear from you.

Wave ... or empathy for my neighbors who have been displaced by the floods :( .

Intrusive thoughts.  Worrying about things that haven't happened  .

I know this will pass, but sooner would be better than later. Frankly, I prefer feeling joyful and balanced to feeling anxious and unsure.  I just need to capture this in my thread so I can remember that sometimes I feel this way ... and I will post when my joy and balance returns <_<.

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Karma,

How are you doing?

I see you were on Effexor regular before the liquid. I assume on immediate release

Tablets. When you got to less than 50mg, did you take them in the morning

And evening? I'm holding at 48.5mg and taking them throughout

The day by breaking them in half. I take half a tablet at 8am, another half, 12

Then half at 8pm and another half at 10pm.

I started doing this after I cut my dose from 150 on XR to 75mg immediate release.

I did this on my own w/o doctor knowing because I could not bear

The side effects at 150(worse anxiety, depersonalization)

I'm doing a bit better - not completely back to joy and balance, but able to fully see the possibilities  :P ... thanks for asking.

Lexy, I have always taken my immediate release Effexor tablets in the AM and PM, pretty much exactly 12 hours apart.  I've never had a problem even when I was on higher doses.  Now I take the liquid at exactly the same dose AM and PM about 12 hours apart.

I assume that taking the tablets 4 times a day might keep a more consistent level of the med in your system, but that is just speculation on my part.

Hi Lexy

No I didn't get more withdrawals when I switched to liquid Effexor.  I think I had some slight symptoms when I first switched, but within 2 weeks I felt good enough to decrement again.  So really, I had been at a specific dose for 2 weeks on tablets and then I switched to liquid at the same dose and held that for 2 weeks.  So I spent a total of 4 weeks at the same dose.

My best advice would be to switch to liquid at the same dose one was taking in tablet form and hold for a minimum of 2 weeks to see how that goes.  I always recommend feeling stable before decrementing.  Stable for me is based on a number of symptoms that I monitor on a daily basis - everyone needs to find their own normal.  I might not feel perfect, but I need to have a reasonable level of stability before I attempt to decrement again - whatever I'm doing.

Hope that helps.

Bad week.  Busy at work ... lacking patience, feeling tired ... actually so aggravated yesterday afternoon I wanted to yell at a child blocking my path on the sidewalk.  Fortunately, I had the self-control to realize that was an inappropriate response to the situation and instead I stepped off the sidewalk and went around.  Yay for small victories.

I started supplementing B12 about 2 weeks ago because although my B12 serum test shows high B12 I learned that up to 90% of it could be inactive.  I do find that the B12 is helping to stabilize my system.  Yesterday I tried 2000 mcg of B12 ... I think the extra 1000 mcg was too activating and that is why I became so aggravated.  Not going to do that again.

Starting to actually feel better today.  DH was out of town for the week and I think that may have contributed stress that made it difficult to feel better this passed week.  He comes home today ... and I can't wait to get a hug  ... or two or three or four ... or just not let go until tomorrow  .

I'm sorry I wasn't around in the last week, but I literally didn't have time to logon and respond to anything.  I am always grateful for all the things my DH does to help our lives run more smoothly, but I don't think I realized that the only reason I do have any free time in the evenings to participate on the forum is because he does take care of routine and mundane things like dinner and dishes.  I'm always grateful that he takes care of these things, I just didn't realize the extent of the benefit to me.

I am holding my last Effexor decrement until I feel more stable ... I think it will be another week before I decrement again.  I've been adjusting thyroid and hydrocortisone in the last couple of weeks (average daily temperatures too low ... average daily temperatures too variable) and as I advise others ... only change one thing at a time.  So consequently, it is in my best interest to give myself some more time before the next decrement.

Work was busy, but not having my husband around was the real challenge.  I'm so glad he is home.

I'm taking methylcobalamin sublingual B12.

Update:

Feeling better, not great, but better than before.  I did decrement by another 1.2 mg last weekend and I've been feeling OK, but when my week isn't routine I feel disturbed ... and this week definitely wasn't routine.  Had to run the car to the shop a couple of times this week (recall service - didn't have the part had to take it back when they had the part, etc.) and that is out of the ordinary so it made me uncomfortable.  Then I found out the car actually needed service ... of course ... why didn't I see that coming  .

Had a doctor's appointment with a wellness gynecologist and thought it would be routine ... don't know what I was thinking ... had to rehash my whole history.  On an up note she totally supports my slow wean off of the ADs :)  ... but on a cautionary note she freaked out about my thyroid treatment ... evidently she does believe there is value in the TSH lab :o and that suppressed TSH causes bone loss :o ... which I don't necessarily believe. I've seen studies that support the idea that suppressed TSH causes bone loss, but you almost always see it with the patient actually being hyperthyroid (medically hyperthyroid, not based on taking thyroid to the suppression of TSH) and also have low D3 ... most of the studies I've seen don't support this idea ... and in August when I checked my D3 it was at 100.

This new doctor suggested that the reason I have to take so much thyroid and other hormones is because she believes I have yeast overgrowth (again) and that is preventing the hormones from getting to the cells.  There may be some merit to that last thought.  When her original practice first diagnosed me in 2005 I had yeast overgrowth and it was causing all kinds of problems ... joint pain, bone pain, malabsorption ... and most likely contributing to depression and anxiety.  Evidently it isn't something that you cure and never have to think about again.

She did say that we shouldn't change anything until we do more testing and then we can focus on one thing.  So I think that there will be some opening for discussion on how I actually feel based on any changes we make.  I'm going to work with her for the next 6 months to a year and see what I can learn and whether we can make adjustments that work for me and align with her vast medical and nutritional knowledge.  I have a great deal of respect for this doctor.

I did notice that when I was filling out her questionnaire that I do have some fatigue and stress symptoms that I have been ignoring.  She told me that when I see her next I need to tell her what I am doing to reduce my stress  um, you mean like actually taking vacations??? She has a holistic approach and I think that may be what I need.

Love and light,
