Can holding really make that big of a difference? I mean if I just hold where I am at will I really get better in time? Just seems like so many of us aren’t getting better holding and waiting.

When you make a change you need to give your brain a change to adapt to that change.

During my taper, even though things were going well, I held at 50mg for 3 months and at 20mg for 7 weeks just to give my brain a change to catch up if it needed to.

Q:  How many changes have you made?  And I'm asking this seriously.  Every dose change is a change (and you made several very large doses changes so you could probably count each of those as 3 or 4 changes in themselves).  Every thing you have added in it is a change (testosterone and ashwaghanda).  Every thing you have removed is a change (testosterone).  You need to keep reminding yourself of what you have done.  Not to feel bad about it but to help you understand what your poor brain is training trying to do to regain stability.

Think of it this way.  Each of the children in this analogy are a change you have made.  You are your brain.  You have children and one of them comes up to talk to you and you start having a conversation.  Then one of the others comes up and they want to talk to you too but about something different.  It is harder to have a conversation with two children about different things at the same time.  They are both clamouring for your attention.  Then the third one comes up and tries to talk to you.  And the fourth and so on.   Slowly but surely you are going to start having more difficulty coping  because you cannot give them each individual attention when they all want your attention at the same time.  And finally you will probably lose it and say enough is enough and then none of them will have your attention because you are so frazzled.  Then you are going to have to go off and calm yourself down.

I'm not sure if I've posted this before, and I'm not going to go back to check.

Here's some additional information which might help you to understand what is happening:

Recovery isn't linear it happens in a Windows and Waves Pattern

Withdrawal Normal Description

When we take a psychiatric drug, we are adding chemical/s to the brain.  The brain then has to change to adapt to getting the chemical/s.  It might have to change something to do with A and then once that change has been made it affects B so another change has to be made and so on down the line.  It is a chain reaction, a domino effect.

The same thing happens when we take the drug away.  That's why it's possible to experience such a vast array of withdrawal symptoms, and they can change, and be of different intensity.  These explain it really well:

When we stop taking the drug, we have a brain that has designed itself so that it works in the presence of the drug; now it can't work properly without the drug because it's designed itself so that the drug is part of its chemistry and structure. It's like a plant that has grown on a trellis; you can't just yank out the trellis and expect the plant to be okay. When the drug is removed, the remodeling process has to take place in reverse. SO--it's not a matter of just getting the drug out of your system and moving on. If it were that simple, none of us would be here. It's a matter of, as I describe it, having to grow a new brain. I believe this growing-a-new-brain happens throughout the taper process if the taper is slow enough. (If it's too fast, then there's not a lot of time for actually rebalancing things, and basically the brain is just pedaling fast trying to keep us alive.) It also continues to happen, probably for longer than the symptoms actually last, throughout the time of recovery after we are completely off the drug, which is why recovery takes so long.

Basically- you have a building where the MAJOR steel structures are trying to be rebuilt at different times - ALL while people are coming and going in the building and attempting to work.

It would be like if the World Trade Center Towers hadn't completely fallen - but had crumbled inside in different places.. Imagine if you were trying to rebuild the tower - WHILE people were coming and going and trying to work in the building!  You'd have to set up a temporary elevator - but when you needed to fix part of that area, you'd have to tear down that elevator and set up a temporary elevator somewhere else. And so on. You'd have to build, work around, then tear down, then build again, then work around, then build... ALL while people are coming and going, ALL while the furniture is being replaced, ALL while the walls are getting repainted... ALL while life is going on INSIDE the building. No doubt it would be chaotic. That is EXACTLY what is happening with windows and waves.  The windows are where the body has "got it right" for a day or so - but then the building shifts and the brain works on something else - and it's chaos again while another temporary pathway is set up to reroute function until repairs are made.

Good post there Chessiecat. I’m in the same boat about stabilising as you know and just over two months in this journey.

I have definitely seen improvement in symptoms from the start but still have symptoms which frustrate me and still up and down. I’m hoping by holding my dose and taking it the same time every day that I will see more improvement and eventually stabilise. But I have to remember this is measured more in weeks and months than hours and days.

To be honest I don’t think we have much option other than to hold as the risks of going off quick or even starting a slow taper is just asking for trouble if not stable.

Just try to give it more time as your brain as gone through a lot in the last 12 months and needs time to heal. The majority of people do stabilise at some point but there is no set time for this to happen in. Could be 3 months or could be 12 months....we all have different drug histories and our bodies are also different in our they respond to withdrawal.

Just remember that you have had better days in the past and they will happen again.

6AM-7:30AM - Wake to moderate anxiety, earlier than usual anxiety hitting.

7:30 AM - take multivitamin, 1/3 of ashwagandha, fish oil, magnesium, vitamin D.

8AM - 2PM - high anxiety, shaking (like cold, but not cold in here), legs and arms kind of a restless tingling, very loose stool, muscle twitch in face (been doing this about a week).

2PM - 7PM - shakiness stops, anxiety is moderate but still hanging around.

7PM - Take other 2/3 of Ashwagandha.

8PM - Take 10MGs Paxil

7-11PM - no real improvement from afternoon, still moderate anxiety hanging around.

11PM - 2.5mgs Zyprexa and Bed.

Like I said, anxiety hanging around all day made for a very tough day.

I haven’t noticed anything definitive yet. I got a little more keyed up after I took it at 7 tonight, but that could have been random or just placebo.

7:00AM - Woke to really strong anxiety, kind of broke down in front of my wife. She is sick of this and says I just need to “pull out of it” and “knock it off.” Said she won’t stay married to a crazy person.

7-9AM - really high anxiety (feels like my body, especially arms are full of adrenaline. I swear if you tapped my veins, fire would come out). used the snowblower to clear the driveway, then headed off to work.

8:30AM - took multivitamin, vitamin D, magnesium, fish oil.

9-Noon - crazy anxiety letting up, not as bad, giving me hope.

noon - 7PM - anxiety comes in waves but overall lessening as the day goes on, a much better day than I had been having, again giving me hope for the future.

7PM - 10MGs Paxil and mild to moderate exercise for 30 minutes.

7-9PM - anxiety not bad, but maybe a slight uptick from earlier.

9-11PM - totally normal, no anxiety feeling good and calm.

11PM - 2.5 msg Zyprexa and bed.

This day have me a lot of hope...that has pretty much been dashed again by unbearable anxiety this morning. It is now noon and still struggling a lot. Really worried about my marriage and my career if I don’t start seeing some improvement.

Wow, really tough day so far. This just has to get better, the sad thing is a have a great life. Great wife, great kids that I adore (being a dad is my all-time favorite thing), great job with huge potential, beautiful home. I have a lot to be thankful for, but this anxiety and WD is all-consuming, and I can find no joy in any of it when the anxiety is strong. I have such a great life, I hope I don’t lose it all due to this.

Just think of the better day you had yesterday. There will be more to come.

The wife situation can’t be easy. If only she knew how you were feeling yet still out there working and providing. You should be proud of yourself for that.

Maybe show her some stories from on hear so she can see what is happening and then show her recovery stories so she knows it does end. Even though we doubt it ends everything suggests it eventually does and for us stabilising is the first step which should bring a lot of relief for us.

20mg Lexapro 2007

10mg Lexapro 2012

Started tapering approx (October 2017) 12 months ago  from 10mg to 9mg then 8 then 7 then 6 then 5 then 4 then 3.

Held for approx 4 to 6 weeks min on each reduction.

Hit severe symptoms (started 7th Nov) after dropping to 3mg. Dropped to 3mg approx 22nd October.

Back to 4mg (7th November) and stabilising. Current symptoms started 23rd November 2018

Used diazepam (2018) 10mg 10th Nov, 5mg 11th Nov, 2.5mg 12 Nov, 2mg 13th Nov.

Used diazepam 10mg 24th Nov, 7.5 25th Nov and 5mg 26th November 2018

I wish I could. She doesn’t believe in withdrawal and doesn’t want me on this site. I kinda of do this without her knowing because when she found out she was not impressed by me getting advice online about medical stuff. Said it was just crazy people trying to come up with theroies. She is awesome, she just doesn’t understand this at all and kind of refuses to believe it.

oh that's too bad. it's hard enough to go thru this but to not have the understanding or support of your closest loved one...

kudos to you for doing as well as you are.

I found I had to explain what I was going thru in a totally different way for those folks who don't understand things like this or wouldn't believe it- I just had to say I was going thru a really really rough time. Most people can at least relate to that. Another option is to say you have panic attacks, which isn't too far off, really, it's just extreme anxiety. Most ppl understand panic attacks even if they've never had one.

of course, you get the folks that insist you need to go get tranquilizers (*rolls eyes*) but at least panic or anxiety attacks and "really rough time" are relatable for most ppl.

maybe enlist her help in finding self help methods to deal with the anxiety- perhaps meditate together (it's good for everyone) or do qi gong or simple yoga or breathing exercises etc.

have you tried epsom salt soaks? soothing music? repeating a mantra to yourself when it's bad, like, I know this will end, things are going to be getter, my brain is healing now and healing doesn't feel good but it will be worth it when I'm better.......

or something

just tossing out ideas.

I kinda did a kitchen sink approach when I was going thru what you are- just threw whatever different methods I could come up with, at the problem and it did help me get thru it.

nothing made it go away except time, mind you but these coping methods do help you get thru it, and that's all you need to do.

you're going to be surprised when you start to feel better more and more often but it's coming!

Hi DaveB,

I'm very sorry to hear about the difficult time you are having.  It's very hard when your loved ones don't recognize what's going on with you.  We don't need them to do anything, we just want to hear, "I believe you."  Below are links to the New York Times article about it. Both part one and part two. Certainly a very reputable newspaper.  You may want to print them out for your wife.  If you already have and she isn't interested in reading it, or if it will just start a fight,  probably best not to talk about it too much then. I wish you luck with the home situation and I hope you have better days.

Warm wishes,

RS

oh hell yes! it was horrendous. It was always worse in the morning and got better as the day went along.

I would wake up in an absolute panic, my heart pounding out of my chest. for no reason, just the withdrawal.

at first, I could not sleep for more than maybe 20 mins the entire night, and the rest of the night I was wide awake in a terrible panic, with the worst anxiety and dread and sometimes utter terror.... I would actually feel afraid of my surroundings; afraid to look in a certain corner or out a certain window. It was crazy and it made me feel crazy but I knew it was "just" withdrawal, and I knew it would end.

I knew this because I read a lot of the other stories here and saw that ppl went thru just as rough a time, or worse, and got better.

you are going to get better, there's really no reason to doubt that. Knowing that can help you focus on just taking care of yourself each day. No reason to worry about the future, it's all going to be ok. It really is.

when you are feeling the anxiety, it will try to trick you into thinking that it's never going to end, but it does and it will.  :)

when you are feeling less anxious or when things are good, savor those times and try to make them imprint on your memory so you'll be able to recall that things were good, when you have another wave of anxiety.

better yet, write all the good things happen down, this is so much more helpful than you can imagine.

it helps you to look for the good things, and in doing so, you actually make the good things grow, both in number and in frequency.

doing a gratefulness journal also helps immensely.

if you like to read, there's a great book called "Hardwiring Happiness" - check it out or google Rick Hanson, I think his name is, he has some short you tube videos about these ideas of ways to re wire your brain to make good things stick and bad things fade into the background.

good links, @RachelSusan

Currently taking Ramapril (blood pressure) 5 mg twice a day

Omeprazole 10 mg AM and 20 mg PM  (the taper has gone nowhere after the first cut)

Famotidine   once a day (and I still needs tums sometimes)

magnesium 200 mg at night

as of yesterday 2 fish oil capsules "EPA-DHA 1000"

off Lexapro as of 5/2018  - last dose had been 5 mg every other day for a couple years

highest dose had been 20 mg at which point I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, which went away when I cut the lexapro down to 15 mg.

I spent years on Paxil before Lexapro (can't remember dose), briefly on Effexor and Abilify and others I have forgotten. in fact, when I was diagnoses with BPII I was put on all kinds of things which made me feel so bad I stopped them cold turkey within maybe 3 or 4 weeks, thank goodness. since then I've known these pills were terrible and I weaned down the Lexapro with zero help or support over I'm not sure how many years.

Today I would say I felt better after the Paxil..so who knows. Probably not a difference one way or another.

7AM - Wake to very high anxiety. Adrenaline in arms and legs, feels like burning almost. Internal and external shaking.

8AM - take multivitamin, vitamin d, 1/3 ashwagandha, fish oil magnesium.

8AM - 3PM - crazy high anxiety, unbearable. Loose stools are not as bad.

3PM - 6PM - slowly starting to get better, anxiety waves less intense.

6PM - take 10MGs of Paxil

6-10PM - feeling much better, not totally normal like some nights, but better.

10-11PM - played pickup basketball

11PM - Zyprexa and bed, feeling pretty good at this point, but dreading the morning.

Notice I skipped the night 2/3 dose of ashwagandha. Woke today with considerably less anxiety. Not sure if related.

Could you drop the multivitamin? The B vitamins in it may be contributing to your anxiety.

Please keep moving Paxil earlier and continue the daily notes.

I could, would you recommend doing that even though I am moving the Paxil dose and just dropped ashwagandha?

7AM - Wake to moderate anxiety, that didn’t stick around all that long.

8AM - half muffin, multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin d, magnesium

8AM - 5PM - mild to moderate anxiety coming in waves, manageable. Stool more solid than usual.

5PM - take 10MGs Paxil

5PM - 11PM - about the same, no real noticeable difference. Was hoping anxiety would shut off completely at night cause it was so manageable during the day, but it kind of stayed the same. Maybe tailed off a bit.

11PM - 2.5mgs Zyprexa

11-12:30: Watched a show, anxiety very mild but very much still there. Then bed.

As you are moving the Paxil earlier every day, your symptom pattern will take a while to sort out. Taking Paxil earlier appears to have some benefits. Please continue to to move Paxil earlier.
