Hello

Fist of all,  I would like to apologize for my english. I am not native, also during WD my concentration is poor and I do mistakes even in my language.

My story began with the average anxiety neurosis.

It started 4 years ago. One year I have been suffering from various headaches, visual disturbances and muscle tension. In the spring of 2013 I got my first panic attack. He did not disappear, the dizziness got worse, social phobia too, because I was not alone in family who had this, I decided to go to psychiatrist.

They prescribed me sertraline. My hell begun from this drag. I thought that it will help me, but first it HIT my central nervous system, that I couldn't stabilize it even thought I stopped medicine after 5 days, I had 1,5 month of terrifying feelings.

2013. My DISORDER was anxiety only. After sertraline I got additionally: deep depression, panic attacks, burning body inside and outside, insomnia, running thoughts. I don't know why but it was similar to this what I got after reinstalling paroxetine.

I changed the doctor. He prescribed me paroxetine 30 mg and clonazepam 3 times a day to stabilize me after sertraline hit. I took clonazepam in dosage 0,25 mg 3 times a day for a round 4 months and then I discontinued with our any problem (one small anxiety attack, then I slow down tapering form 0,125 mg for week to 0,125 for 2 weeks and stopped. I didn't need it even accidentally.

2014 spring. After one year I started to decreased dosage form 30 to 20 mg, like 5 mg a month. Then after 2 months I god my first sadness days on paroxetine. I was disapointed that it happened. I was supposed to quite drag, but that sadness came with no reason (I think It could be the first sign of discontinuation syndrome while I was tappering- then I thought that me condition is still not good enough). I return to dosage and in autumn  I decreased again and I got the same depression period, also some changes in mood were very often. Even during day. It was strange, doctor perscribed lamotrigine, but I got skin allergy so we stopped at 14 day. 2-3 months later this stabilized.

2015 in autumn I started to decrease dosage from 20 till 10 mg. I was feeling much better on 10 mg, I was on this a roung 3 months and then on February my anxiety increased also sadness came. Throw this time I stopped my 9th years relation, so I suppossed that it was because of that. I came back on 25 mg, in spring 2016. In may I got aditionaly trazadon for my problem with sleeping.

In septemeber all was going good. My dificult time was behind me and I started again to reduce my dosage from 25 mg

September- -20 mg,

October -15 mg

Novemer -10 mg

December 5 mg

January 0 mg

During this time I was feeling really good.

15 february- strange two nights came. When i was falling asleep I got depressive and anxitey feelings, like sombody suddenly put virus to my mind program.

I didn't sleep, next night I took 25 mg trazadon and I slept well, this diseapered for one month.

14 march- the same strange nights came. I took trazadon again but this time it was adverse reaction.

19 march- doctor said to increase trazadon- I did to 100 mg- it was still opossite reaction i was stimulated, not sleepy.

22.03.2017- adding paroxetine 5mg-10 mg- obsessive thougths increase, depression increase its total adverse reaction.

22.03.2017- 15 mg- starting clopozepam 2 x 0,25 mg for 3 weeks to install paroxetine

03.04.2017- 20 mg paroxetine 125 mg trazadon- sleeping is better

25.04.2017-25 mg paroxetine 75 mg trazadon- sleeping better, depression deeper, problems with concentration, loosing feelings- i stopped to take clonazepam,

29.04.2017-30 mg paroxetine - I couldn't stand it. It was total brain fog, and I was like emotional stone.

08.05.2017- P-25 mg T- 75 mg.

11.05.2017- P 20 mg, T 75 mg

13.05.2017- starting acupuncture, it helped till 10 session

19.05.2017- starting theraphy CBT

20,05.2017- P-15 mg-T-75 mg I feel better when I decrease, but still can't stablize.

28.05.2017- P- 10 mg- T-75 mg My concentration is better.

04.06.2017- I tried to decrease trazadon to 50 mg- but it failed, i got worse for few days.

18.06.2017- FIRST DOCTOR- he decided to change paroxetine into escitalopramum with clonozepam for 3 months

19-21. 06.2017- 5 mg paroxetine- with clopozepam 0,25 for 5 days

24.06.2016 SECOND DOCTOR- diagnozed adicction from paroxetine, said that I have to discontiniue this drag, slowly with propranolol 3 times a day. I plan to follow this plan it seems to be more rational that first doctor. Still her slowly is fast here.

01.07.2017 dereasing to 2,5 mg for 14 days
11.07.2017 dereasing to 1,25 mg for 14 days with propranonol help.
If it will be dificult adding Lirica (pregabalin in night) just to discontinue the drag,

Hello Slavic Lady and welcome to Surviving Antidepressants.

I'm away for the weekend and typing this from my phone but I would like to get you started and you've been waiting long for your first post.

Also I worry you will make yourself very sick if you proceede with your doctor's plan especially after all the changes you have had so far.

I must say it was difficult for me to follow everything that your brain has been put through recently. But if I were you I would stop any further decreases immediately.

What are your symptoms at the moment?

It would also be nice to have a short summary of your drug history in your signature as the rest of us have-- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly?

  • Any drugs prior to 24 months ago can just be listed with start and stop years.
  • Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago)
  • Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016.
  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
  • A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs.
  • Link to Account Settings – Create or Edit a signature.

Please inform yourself before you continue and ask as many questions as you need to here.

Doctors have no idea it's possible to take lesser doses of drugs than are availabld on the market (I'm taking 3.75 mg now). You will find detailed instructions on how to do it here when the time comes.

But give yourself a huge favour, stop reducing and read through these links.

Why taper by 10% of my dosage?

Dr Joseph Glenmullen's WD Symptoms Checklist

What should I expect from my doctor about withdrawal symptoms?

How do you talk to a doctor about tapering and withdrawal?

These helped me to understand SA's recommendations:

I tried to stabilise on each dosage. I couldn't, so I have no choice.

Paroxetine don't work anymore.

I can't support benzos.

Now on 5 mg first week I felt bearable,  now I got muscles pain, sleeping going worse. I have no idea what to do.

I gave paroxetine enough time and she didn't work.

I will get sick when I will return. I will get sick if I will tapper and I will get sick when I will switch. Wonderful choice.

SL.You can stabilize and you have to hang in there. Listen to Bubble.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

It may take weeks or months for your CNS ( central nervous system) to settle as you have had many drug changes. As Bubble said - stop any further decreases for now and read the link provided. It will help to explain what is happening.

I can stabilise on escitalopramum with first doctor. He will provide this with clonopin for one-two month.

01.07.2017 dereasing to 2,5 mg for 14 days
11.07.2017 dereasing to 1,25 mg for 14 days with propranonol help.
If it will be dificult adding Lirica (pregabalin in night) just to discontinue the drag,

Welcome, SlavicLady.

As you probably suspect, your nervous system has been upset by going on and off drugs. It has become very sensitive.

Your second doctor seems to understand, but he is recommending a tapering program that is much too fast.

As bubble suggested, if I were you, I would stay at 5mg paroxetine. The higher dosages were irritating your sensitive nervous system. We often find that lower dosages can be better.

Most likely, you'll find symptoms come and go but gradually get weaker. This is what we mean by stabilization. It can take weeks or months, there's no way to hurry your nervous system along. You have to let it settle down.

Then you can continue tapering, see Tips for tapering off Paxil (paroxetine)

I would take the clonazepam as infrequently as possible. Avoid it if you can, it can make things worse.

At what time of day do you take paroxetine? Are you taking any other drugs? How are you sleeping?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

At 7.00 am 5 mg paroxetine  and trazadon 75 mg at 10 pm (short history of this drag- in total 5 moths)

Last week second doctor added propranolol 10 or 20 mg 3 times a day. Also she mentioned to add Lirica. Do Doctors have success in this way of discontinuation? She said to survive a addiction from paroxetine during tappering. She prognosed 3 months of WD. As I read here no one can promise which time it will take.

First doctor I had experience with regular using clonopin in 2013 when I installed paroxetine. I discontinued this after 5 months without problems. I can say that WD from paroxetine is milion time worse. That is why after 4 months trying of reinstall paroxetine I would like to switch this for other drag. ( escitalopram  or other). Then it would be one drag,  not like now second doctor trazadon , propranolol,  paroxetine and she thinks to add lirica. Also benzos for this 3 months will help me to survive,  not lose work and not get insane .

I worry to get second hit WD. Is that possible that I will get second hit according to history from my first post I decreased again paroxetine from 25 mg to 5mg , but it was during reinstalling? I worry so much. You said wait on 5 mg, but now I can see it go worse in this second week on this dosage. If it will be no improvement,  what to do?

The way you are feeling now is not so much the result of a particular drug or a particular dose but of destabilisation of your central nervous system with all the drug changes and jumping with doses.

Unfortunately nothing can meke this go away in a week in the same way you can't make a broken bone grow back together in that time.

But giving your brain stability by taking the same drug, the same dose, at the same time will help heal it faster.

Like a broken bone it usually takes a month to gradually start feeling better. At first it's important that you stop getting worse and after a week or two or three you will start noticing improvements and won't have to take additional drugs. It takes lots of patience and treating yourself very gently by maybe taking some time off work and in general treating yourself as if you had a broken leg: lots of rest, stability and calming techniques.

If you continue like you have been doing so far, I'm afraid you will be getting even worse and end up taking even more drugs. This can be very difficult for people to understand and accept because we are all used to quick fixes.

Escitalopram is equally nasty as paroxetine and some would even say it'd worse. We often see very bad results of switching drugs where people end up worse and end up taking two drugs instead of one. But again, it takes people a lot of time and suffering to begin to understand this. Reading the links we provided might help you understand what is happening with your brain and how these drugs work.

Buuuble and Alto,

Yes, it scares me.

PROPRANOLOL & LIRICA trial

To my 5 mg paroxetine and trazadon 75mg she want to add:

From one week I use propranolol to stabilise.

Also doctor want to add lirica. So you see how it look. The reason why she want to add this is that I am not stable.

BENZO FOR WD

I can stabilise if I will take klorazepan or clonozepam for a while. Then I can kick out other drags  and feel stable during wd. If anyone here did this way?  As I mentioned I was on clonazepam 4 months and I didn't get addiction. Also I know that addiction is not funny story.

SWITCHING to escitalopram or other

If not escitalopramum, so what could be less nasty than paroxetine? People says that they are similar and that is why exchange for this is reasonable.

Dears main problem is that I am not stable on any dosage of paroxetine. That scares me. I can wait on 5 mg but with benzo small dosage.

Getting stable takes lot more time than we are prepared to give it. It can take weeks before we start feeling slightly better.

If you decide to use a benzo it's better to use the smallest possible dose regularly than now and then because that can destabilise you further. We avoid adding any more drugs to the mix and every antidepressant comes with their own problems especially when used on an already destabilised brain.

You will have to make up your mind whether you want to followed doctors' advice which seem to have brought you to this state or unpatient and inform yourself. It's not easy but can be done.

GOING WITH DOCTOR RECOMMENDATION:

We decided with doctor that I will take clonopin up to 3 times a day- 0,5 and I will go off paroxetine.

This moment I feel much better after adding clonozepam- I take only 0,25mg a day. I stopped to have mood waving and depression, my sleeping stabilised.

From today I am on paroxetine 3 mg- that for 21 days, next 1,5 mg for next 3 weeks, 0,75 last 3 weeks, then off.

Trazadon- I am on 75 mg, but when I have now clonopin I feel its to much for me, I plan to decrease to 50 mg.

After that I will be on clonopin for 3 months to stabilise, then slow tapper it.

In 2013 when I was installing paroxetine with clonozepam I was on it 5-6 months- discontinuation of this benzos was easy job (one panic atack- 2 anxiety days) with comparision of that hell what I got from paroxetine.

I have no idea how it will work, I was trying to stabilise on few dosages paroxetine, but I couldn't. Almost lost my work and life. If I would have to tapper slow clonazepam it s still better that hell of my last 4 months of trying reinstal paroxetine, when I was feeling only worse and doctors were planed to ass propranonol, pregabaline and who know what more.

I really hope that my WD will last maximum 3 months, and that clonopin will help me to go throw. I know I have no quarantee that it will last only this period or if will not get second shot of WD. I just pray it will work.

SlavicLady, please be aware that you could have problems with the plan to taper paroxetine that you posted:

5 mg as of July 2, 2017

3 mg for 3 weeks, 40% reduction from previous

1.5 mg for 3 weeks, 50% reduction

0.75 mg for 3 weeks, 50% reduction

We would suggest something much more gentle:

5 mg as of July 2, 2017

4.5 mg for 4 weeks

4.0 mg for 4 weeks

3.6 mg for 4 weeks

3.2 mg for 4 weeks

2.9 mg for 4 weeks

2.6 mg for 4 weeks

2.35 mg for 4 weeks

2.1 mg for 4 weeks

1.9 mg for 4 weeks

Please read these to understand why going more slowly is safer and less likely to cause withdrawal symptoms:

In 2013 when I was installing paroxetine with clonozepam I was on it 5-6 months- discontinuation of this benzos was easy job (one panic atack- 2 anxiety days) with comparision of that hell what I got from paroxetine.

SlavicLady,

Benzos commonly are much more difficult to come off if you've been on them before. It's called a "kindling effect". So please don't think your experience coming off clonozepam will be the same as before. I also had been off and on benzos in the past, but this last time I came off, it was much harder with really severe memory impairment.

Please take Scallywag's wise advise and do a slow taper. It's much better to do a slow taper than to add in a benzo.

I told. I couldn't stabilise on paroxetine. Almost lost my mind and work.

Now is normal. I do it with doctor. I will be maximum 4 months on it. Low dosage during this time tapper paroxetine and trazadon.

You can and you will of course do as you please.

But since you came here looking for advice we are trying to tell you it was not paroxetine per se that caused your symptoms but too fast withdrawal from it.

Glad that you found a doctor you trust and hope things will work out for you as you plan.

Problem was that I couldn't stabilise on any dosage. If I could then I would do slow tapper. I think I missed that window for reinstalation.

Clonopin- of course I worry, about this drag. it can make people suffer a lot. Doctor said that if I will take therapheutic dosages then risck of adiction will be low.

scallywag _ I would do your tappering programm if I was stable on paroxetine. I am not :-(.

So they added me (psychiatrist) clonopin- to tapper faster. Now I am 3 rd day on 3 mg, with 0,25 clonopin one a day, but I feel I will have to increase it for 2 times a day.

I hope benzos will help me with WD- then I will discontinue it slowly. I just pray that I will have short WD, just pray.

Hi, SL.

My drug history is extremely lengthy (30 years) and involved almost all kinds of benzos during that timeframe. Each time I came off, it was harder than before and I ended up reinstating until I came off for the last time 3 years ago. The last benzo I took was Klonopin at 2 mg taken at night.

When your doctor says that the risk of taking a therapeutic dose is low, he or she is talking about the "craving" form of addiction. The concept that low-dose benzos don't cause withdrawal is a myth because you are dealing with "dependency", not craving.

Benzos only "work" for 2 - 4 weeks. After that, you are only taking them to prevent withdrawal symptoms. This is why we don't encourage you to use a benzo to come off an antidepressant. It's best to taper slowly off your antidepressant, using non-drug coping methods to help.

You haven't given yourself time to stabilize on the Paroxetine. Instead, you now are on a HIGH dose of Klonopin, if you are already at 3 mg. Keep in mind that Klonopin is an extremely potent benzodiazepine, 20 times the strength of Valium.

Again, we do not advise what you are doing.

Thanks for clarifying your Klonopin dose.

The problem with "short term" Klonopin use is you may take it for a few months, but it may take you a year or more to taper off it and benzo withdrawal is every bit as difficult as SSRI withdrawal for many people. Just like with any dependency, you won't know how hard it is until you have to come off it. And by then, your nervous system will be dealing with your paroxetine withdrawal in addition to benzo withdrawal. You really are straining your nervous system.

Like I and others are posting to you, it's a really bad idea to use a benzo to come off an antidepressant. It's by far better to taper off the antidepressant slowly.

This is an article about the hazzards of benzo withdrawal:

Benzos: A Dance With the Devil

We can only offer you the advice that comes from decades of members reporting their experience on the various psychiatric withdrawal web forums.

Please do your research first. Your doctor may prescribe benzos as an easy way of coming off the antidepressant but you are the one who's going to have to live with the results. Unfortunately, the doctors are very ignorant about withdrawal. That's why forums like Surviving Antidepressants exist.

Shep

Thank you for all information. I would follow doctor for a while, maybe it will work, but I will keep in mind your advices.

Today I am on 3 mg paroxetine, 0,5 mg clonopin (morning and evening 0,25 mg) and 50 mg trazadon (yesterday I decreased from 75 mg)

What I can add for sleeping instead of trazadon (I was on it only 3 moths). During time when clonopin deal with my WD sympthoms, i would like to change trazadon for something natural:

i was thinking: melatonin, CBD oil, 5 htp or others, but I don't know which will not have reaction to my drags. Do you have any idea?

Greatings,

SlavicLady, we've given you our advice in doing a slow and careful taper, but that's not the advice you are taking.

You just made a 33% reduction in your trazodone, which is more than the 10% advocated by SA, in addition to adding in a benzo and already doubling the dose. You mentioned earlier that reducing your trazodone this way made problems worse. Why would you think now it will be different?

04.06.2017- I tried to decrease trazadon to 50 mg- but it failed, i got worse for few days.

And now you want to start adding in supplements on top of all of these other changes. When you do this, you won't know if it's the supplements causing problems or any of the drugs you've changed.

You may need to adjust your life circumstances so that you can come off these drugs. That may involve finding a less stressful job, even if that means having to move into a house or apartment that is less expensive. That's how I was able to keep working while I recover.   Or seek help from friends and family. Many of us make great sacrifices in order to reach our goal of living drug free.

Surviving Antidepressants provides the best information available on withdrawing from psychiatric drugs, but you are insistent on adding in whatever helps for the moment without any insight that what you are doing will cause massive problems for yourself in the future.

Please continue working with your doctor, as SA is clearly not the right website for you.  You may also want to join the website Depression Forums for online social support.

Kind of. Doctor is very close to being a curse word on this forum. The knowledge is with the mods and staff and everybody here suffering due to doctor's advice.

Took my first SSRI sipralexa/lexapro/escitalopram in 2007 for depression. In 2010 the doctor switched me to paroxetine/seroxat/paxil for anxiety.

My paroxetine story from then on:

2010-15 from 10mg up to 20mg

jan 2016 30mg

may 2016 0mg cold turkey (don't!)

dec 2016 symptoms: anxiety, tremor (could barely stand)

jan 2017 reinstated at 7.5mg to taper in steps of 10%

...

Dose changes from may 2017 to now:

5.0/4.7/4.4/4.0/3.7/3.5/3.3/3.1mg

I respect all your advice and during last 4 months I tried to catch suitable dosage of paroxetine to stabilise. I faild. I felt only worse on each, a specially on high. Then when i was decreasing- I start to get back intelectual power, less intrussive thoughts, more energy, but... it was better only when I decreased dosage and after 3 weeks always get worse.

I watched the sad stories of girls/ women like me who told you that they can't stabilise on paxil and they follow the doctors with really bad result. Some switched succesfully,  some get more sick, some did cold turkey and had only 3 months of hell, some years with no imrovement.

Also I saw people who do safe tapper, but also suffer a lot, all that things what I saw here terryfy me and I know not only me.

Shep I tapper off the paroxetine (faster than it should be, but do this). Some people here did cold turkey and nobody told them to find better place, becasue of their choice.

Secondly I started to tapper trazadon (also fast, but I was on it only 3 months), I did this because i want use this short time when clonopin helps me to clean meds, what last time were added to my paroxetine. Long time I was only on paro.

My idea was- to exchange trazadon with suplement, that is why I asked about advice, which could be reasonable.

After 2 moths I will start also to decrease clonopin and try to be drag free.

Nobody wants you away from here. It's just that many who come here are rock-bottom and looking for any advice, while you already seem to have in mind the road you're gonna take in spite of the concerns some have.

Listen to your body and do what you should do. You are well-informed and you believe in your way. That's important as well.
