Hi Starboy:

You have done a very conservative taper of the mirt and what you are experiencing is difficult to understand.  I hope by going slow, slow down and off, the symptoms minimize and you feel you are going in the right direction.  How is your sleep?  I tapered off a benzo and I know that depression comes with or even after the taper is finished.

I know what you mean by the tiredness that comes whilst being on it and tapering off.  Some days I can do so much more than others.

Stay the course; it will be over soon.  I am tapering in a somewhat unconventional way but it is working for me, so I will continue with it.

Best regards,

Shebon

Started 3.75 mg. remeron 4/2013.  Had tapered off benzo 4/2011.  Had tapered down to 1.87 mg remeron but mistakenly thought I was in bad withdrawals, when it was Synthroid again.  Stopped  Synthroid 3/31/3021-side effects are the same as hyperthyroid symptoms, but doctors have no knowledge of this side effect.  Started taper end of 7/2021, now at 3.48 mg. daily.

HI Shebon,

I've had some recent external stressors which affected my sleep quality, was waking up every 3-4hours sometimes i could sleep again others not so much.   I spoke with my psychologist today and that really helped me to process some challenging emotions that likely triggered the sleep quality issue.

Its interesting reading my earlier posts as I don't recall the pain being that intense back in April.  Then again seeing that i went from 1.65mg - 1.6mg which i think is 2.5% cut is the reason why i went to 1% cuts to minimize the suffering whilst also continuing to taper as i felt that my tapering was taking longer than i wanted or hoped.

I'm so proud of you for reaching a milestone, congratulations.  I'm surprised that you're able to feel ok with tapering the way you do. How's things been? my apologies for not replying much sooner.  I think study got the better part of me, but decided overdoing it was not good so reduced my some units.

Starboy, have you seen a rheumatologist? Is it possible you have a medical condition that coincidentally has gotten worse in the same period you've been tapering mirtazapine? It seems the pain started while you were taking it, not as a withdrawal symptom, is that correct?

Do you find that small amount of mirtazapine? Does it still make you drowsy? Does the pain increase after you take it?

I see we asked several times for daily symptom notes. If you're getting random pain not connected with the time you take a drug, checking for another cause is reasonable.

Hi Alto,

Yeah i saw a rheumatologist two years ago who found nothing and said I had non-specific pain. Sent me off to do some physio and chat to a psychologist.  Like i'm gonna be able to talk myself out of mirtazpine induced pain.  I seriously question the medical profession after this experience, some have no comprehension whatsoever.    You're correct upon first taking mirtazpine i experienced stabbing pain in my right or left knee i can't recall which one, it went away but soon began to notice feelings of muscle tightness particularly between my shoulders and losing the ability to do things, my arms which I had a home gym have since gone back to be skinny. In summary I lost the mobility, endurance i previously had. Once i commenced tapering it was apparent that this med is incredibly difficult to stop, it was very strange for me being such an active person to be hit like I did/and continue to experience episodically as i taper.  The most recent taper i experienced a lot more emotional/mental symptoms, I had a burning feeling sensation inside my head, haven't had that symptom for a while along with what i think is some form of insomnia possibly from some stressors but was fine before then. Nightmares which woke me up, frequent waking etc

I'm thinking of up dosing as I'm not getting much restorative sleep which just makes things challenging.  I'm thinking it could have been my recent tapering that caused the rebound insomnia (if that what it is) as i had been managing life in general pretty good up til last week.  Sure, i had my moments, but overall it was reasonable and tolerable.  But after the recent tapering I seemed unable to tolerate stress.  I had made a mistake which i feel i have blown out of proportion, the rumination which caused me to experience unrelenting anxiety throughout the day along with extremely low self esteem and self worth, and worrying over past mistakes where it was difficult to be objective. That then  affected my sleep quality in addition to frequent nightmares & frequent waking. Since last Friday I've noticed I've slept probably 3 at most 4 hrs maybe an 1hr or more maybe less each night.  I thought i slept a full 4 hrs last night with frequent waking, maybe got another 2.5hrs more, all in all not feeling refreshed at all.  It's the pits!

I'm thinking of going up to 1.58mg tonight, I'm currently at 1.54mg.

Given that the time lapse since i took 1.58mg would it be ok to up-dose until i can better manage these issues?  the exhaustion throughout the day is unforgiving, though i have quit caffeine last week and my usual multivitamin supplement. I took my multivitamin today and this afternoon i feel a little more energetic.

I went looking for magnesium glycinate in Australia, typical we don't make it here. Also, was thinking of adding melatonin.  I tried a chamomile tea today, too early to tell if it helped as i took it during the day.  I incorporate all the other sleep hygiene tips to the T.  This ongoing battle with mirtazapine has reminded me that i want to steer clear from further harm by big pharma, but I'm concerned if my sleep quality tips over then what i experienced in 2016 may return.

People's suggestions would be greatly appreciated during this challenging time

Peace

You have a long history of going on and off neuroactive drugs, with the finasteride and amphetamine. It seems you had an adverse reaction to Lexapro when you first took it, and maybe mirtazapine, too.

Your current symptoms may not be due to mirtazapine withdrawal symptoms, but post-finasteride syndrome: "Hypotonia, muscular weakness, muscle spasms or myalgia".

I suggest you look into that. Meanwhile, if more mirtazapine helps you sleep, your decision if you want to increase the dosage.

I do not think your pain symptoms are due to mirtazapine withdrawal, though at times you may have had a difficult time tapering it.

Please see the Symptoms and Self-Care forum for discussions about using melatonin.

Thanks for the information Altostrata.  I only noticed issues with the generic finisteride that both myself and my same sex partner took. We both only took it for probably a month as we noticed some side effects, more so for me. I was still able to go to the gym and be very active whilst taking the propecia brand for years.

However, as for the generic, one afternoon whilst playing a video game i felt a sudden emotional urge to cry out of nowhere, we both also noticed  libido issues (sorry too much info). But afterwards I also experienced anxiety, and I felt that contributed to sleep anxiety which turned it insomnia, panic attacks that made me have thoughts of self harm, and depression. But I had always had anxiety throughout my teen years and adult life.  I wonder if i had tried more natural remedies if i would have been much better off, I was convinced by the chemical imbalance theory at the time.

I did look at the finisteride issue, thankfully i didn't experience sexual side effects

I remember quitting dexamphetamine for (ADHD) and once i did I felt ok, until i took the generic finisteride.

The pain symptoms only started once i took mirtazapine, then worsened each taper.

I honestly don't want to be on any medication at all.

Hello Starboy. Sorry to hear about your troubles tapering Mirt. As far as the knee pain, I have it too and it is from tapering Mirt. I have it in my left knee so I favor it some to avoid it getting worse. Day to day it's not too bad. Muscle weakness, aches, joint pain is also Mirt. I find it so frustrating, it's really not a good thing. I also have low stress tolerance. Small issues get blown up. Recently I was thrown into a bad wave because of this. If I were you I would just hold for months, at last 3 months. I bet this will help a lot. I hope you feel better soon. Be well. Marie.

Hi Starboy. I was reading your posts and it seems you have a lawyer representing you. Explain to your attorney what your "embellishment" was and how to proceed. He/she will be able to tell you what you need to do or not do. What I've read through the lines here I can see why you are ruminating and having trouble sleeping. This would happen even if Mirt was not in the picture. Lawsuits are stressful on a good day. I would say sit down with your lawyer, tell them everything, and let him/her explain the whole process from beginning to end. This should help your fears and you will overcome this. Good luck! Marie

Hi Starboy. Since you did not name anyone it won't hurt anyone. You are human and you were hurting so you said that extra thing. Everyone has things in their life they regret, but you are removing the one item so it's okay. I know legal stuff can be stressful, I had one myself and it was hard at times. It will have a conclusion and be over. Tapering Mirt gives you odd thoughts. Every time I get one I say to myself, 'it's just the drug, ignore it". All kinds of crazy thoughts I get. Keep going, it gets better. Marie.

Hi Starboy:

So very sorry to hear you are still having pain and insomnia problems with your low dose of mirt.  I want to ask if you have had your thyroid tested?  Hypothyroidism can bring on severe aches and pains and other problems.  Ophrah Winfrey went a long time to many expensive docs before one doc decided to test thryroid.  I think she was fluctuating back and forth on high and low amounts of TSH.  Anyway, it might be something to look into.

I think if updosing helps, you should do it.  I know you went back to compounding the mirt after trying the SolTab.  I tried SolTabs too for around 80 days and had to go back to tablets.  I read that SolTabs are not quite the same potency as the tablets, hence, an immediate reduction in dosing.

Best to you -- we are getting low and so close to getting off this stuff!

Started taper end of 7/2021, now at 3.48 mg. daily.
