ok, I understand, but basically this sounds to me there is some (positive?) event which takes their interest out the forums for good and they have no more interest to follow eg. how peers may gradually improve. And if it was some clear positive improvement, why would they not even bother to make a small encouraging post before they go out and improve further?

Maybe they get fed up with the negativity of the forums and realise that it is not beneficial to them.  They might leave the forums and get on with the lives the best they can.

Also I want to defend myself and say that I am not "constantly" telling everyone we're doomed. I said that one time. The other times I simply was questioning for myself (and everyone else who may have the same question) why there are so few success stories and a considerable number of long term sufferers scattered on various forums. Second, I have been listening to the moderators, so I don't know what you are talking about 1Day.

Zoloft 50 mg from April 23, 2015 to August 28th, 2016 (1 year, 4 months).

4 week taper. Last dose on August 28, 2016

Mianserin 30 mg in an attempt to reverse PSSD from September 6th, 2017–around mid November 2017 after a few week taper. Did not fix PSSD

You need to get off each drug one by one zante. I managed to get off a number of prescription drugs one by one. It took me about 4 years to do it, but i feel so much healthier being off everything. You have to fight for the life you want, and you have to fight hard

Hey Spruce30, how many different medications were you on at one point?  Did you have insomnia as one of the top withdrawal effects?  Right now that's all that I'm getting as a withdrawal effect but it's so severe that I cannot get off the remaining medications.  There are few options left to try.  I'm going to try stem cell therapy if they allow me as a patient for both the insomnia and the PSSD.

I've been on dozens of psychiatric medications starting with being forced to take Prozac back as a minor in the mid 1990s.  All doctors would cold turkey me from medications.  I did not learn about withdrawal until the mid 2000's by reading Dr. Breggin's books and finding sites similar to this one.  I had one successful full cleansing from medication in 2007 and began to recover from some of the iatrogenic damages.  I started to drink alcohol in 2008 to try and recover from PSSD and then about 6 months later, I lost my ability to sleep and was put into an inpatient psychiatric facility and redrugged.  The only med combination that has allowed me to sleep was 1250 mg of Depakote ER and 3 mg Klonopin.  However, my quality of life is terrible on these meds.  I want to try to get off everything now once again.  I have failed a couple of times trying to come off these meds recently but will try again once I can find a psychiatrist who understands withdrawal and can support me.

UPDATE:

I have not consumed any alcohol in over 10 years.  May 2019 - I started to reduce Anafranil very slowly so I can see a PSSD specialist.  I also plan on trying stem cell therapy to repair my iatrogenic brain damage.

Current meds:  1125 mg Depakote Sprinkles, 3 mg Klonopin

Current side effects:  PSSD, insomnia, odd sleep schedule, anhedonia, lack of motivation, cognitive issues, memory loss, hair loss, weight gain, dry mouth

They may leave the forums before they get better (possibly because they have got information and/or the negativity).  They may then go on to improve and it may not even enter their mind to return to post about it.  I think this is what happens with a lot of the non-PSSD withdrawal members.

CheesieCat is right.  Even when I managed to get off the 25 psychiatric medication mess I was dealing with from 1997 to 2007, I was instructed to stop looking at forums and try to live my life as best as I could even though I knew what I wanted to do at some point in my life was to become like Dr. Peter Breggin and do as much as I could to ban psychiatric medications and then find a cure for PSSD.  However, I was also given poor advice saying that I should just go ahead and drink alcohol again and try to socialize with as many people as possible and try to sleep with as many different girls as possible to reverse the PSSD.  So then my brain and CNS couldn't tell the difference between alcohol and benzos because they both work on GABA and I wound up losing my ability to sleep and went inpatient for 4 months and that's when the 25 medications went up to 40 medications tried totally.

Also let me add that I have never visited the PSSD yahoo group and that seems to be where everyone is getting the impression that recovery is extremely unlikely. So my 20-25 long term sufferers that I have seen have all come from pssdforum, here, or comments on youtube videos etc.

I am sorry Potions if I upset you. I did not mean to. All I am saying is try not to focus only on the negative stories. I remember reading somebody say they spent a day or something searching across the Internet and found something like 50 PSSD recovery stories (without really trying very hard). Many of these were hidden on forums not specifically dedicated to PSSD. All I am saying is that for every long term case you have come across there is also a recovery story. As for the Yahoo group I read that many on there have made their situation worse with drugs etc.

The thing about people not coming back to post once they have recovered: Spruce has informed us of what he has found out i.e. a person who has had communication with over 30 people who have recovered and most of them did not post about it.  If people don't want to believe this that is fine. Personally I do believe it. Ultimately many people are selfish and would not even consider others. I think we have all seen that in many aspects of life.  It is nice to know that all of us would post the recovery story though.

The anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that at least a large proportion of PSSD sufferers seem to eventually recover.

I am not saying that PSSD cant be permanent. For some people it may end up being this way.

But I have seen and heard enough to make me believe there is a lot of hope for recovery.

Last took an SSRI January 2009.

Last took a benzodiazepine May 2015.

Free from all prescription medication since May 2015.

Everything has mostly healed apart from PSSD which is still very bad, and is my most distressing symptom. Also i have developed some allergy problems/ sensitivities to things in the environment which i believe was possibly caused by the prescription medications (SSRI's and benzos).

I just don’t get how it could be permanent for some and not for others. . . Could it be that given enough time everyone would eventually recover? But for some people it could take like 30+ years? Because I spoke to the 14 year sufferer and it turns out he took trazadone at around the 8 year mark right when he was “starting to recover a bit” from PSSD and it killed all the progress he made. It seems you were right that a lot of long term sufferers might have taken other stuff. An 8 year sufferer I talked to was on some anti-seizure medicine at some point during pssd. I worry for myself since I have been taking Benadryl and other serotonergic things (like trypophan for months) that could’ve worsened things for me. I know someone who took only Prozac and no other drugs and has had pssd for 10 years. I also have a good friend who had total numbness and no libido and extreme anorgasmia after taking 14 pills of Prozac and he’s doing much better now in all aspects of sexuality after around 10 months. I think we certainly have hope. The question is: how long it will take and how much we’ll recover.

Most people I know who have had PSSD for a long time without any sign of improvement, are either on other psychiatric drugs which affect sexual functioning, or have taken them in their recovery process.

How long have you been off SSRI's and all psychiatric drugs potions?

I notice potions that you are on Benadryl (diphenhydramine) which is an antihistamine. I also noticed you are on melatonin, which is a hormone that is very structurally similar to serotonin.

It might interest you to know that antidepressants were originally created from antihistamines. Most antihistamines can cause sexual side effects. Also melatonin can have an effect on erections.

Probably best to get rid of both of those drugs, to optimise your chances of recovery. I would recommend staying away from all prescription drugs if you can.

I have been off all psychiatric meds since I guess mid November after I took mianserin for three months to try to reverse PSSD. But I was never prescribed mianserin and bought it online. It didn’t worsen PSSD but made my libido better in some ways, worse in others. Other than that, I’ve only been on Zoloft and stopped taking that almost 19 months ago. Do you think the benadryl and melatonin could have killed any progress I might have made Spruce?

As I have said;  I think the benadryl and melatonin could be holding your recovery back. I would get rid of them.

You are only 19 months out, and that is still quite early days for PSSD. Certainly too soon to be concluding that your PSSD is permanent.

My advice for recovery from PSSD is this:

Eat a healthy diet,

Exercise frequently,

Get 7-8 hours sleep a night,

Distract yourself by developing your hobbies and personal life,

If you watch pornography, give it up (pornography can have a strong affect on dopamine, and long term use has been shown to cause sexual problems)

Stop taking and stay away from all prescription drugs and supplements (many prescription drugs have sexual side effects)

Be patient and accept PSSD is likely to take a long time to recover from i.e years.

The people I have seen recover from PSSD all seem to have followed a healthy lifestyle, and have avoided trying to treat PSSD with prescription drugs and supplements. They have instead allowed their bodies to heal naturally and have optimised the chances for this, by living healthily, and giving it lots of time, often many years.

Thanks for the advice Spruce, I appreciate it. You might not know the answer to this, but do you know anything that I could possibly take for allergies other than Benadryl? Do you think Claritin or allerga could be used without worsening pssd? I have horrible allergies. I visited the antihistamine page on here but can't seem to find anything safe. Do you think I should just completely stop all supplements 100% and live with the allergies?

Yes, I would agree with everything Spruce says. I think if possible it is best to be off all medications, but especially those that can cause sexual side effects.

And for sure 19 months is still early days. I have read recovery stories by people who have recovered by this point, but not many.

I am really not sure about those two things you mention about trying for the allergies. Spruce might well know, or one of the moderators.

I would be quite happy if the only problem left was headache, even if everything is relative. General anhedonia, not having libido, no erection, no sensing in genitals and no feeling of orgasm is so devastating that I would be happy to take meds for headache if I ever got the other things back.

In regards to the allergies and Benadryl. I am not a doctor and any choice you make about what medicines you take should be made between you and your doctor.

But as we now know, a lot of doctors are not informed about the long-term dangers, or even the short term side effects, of many of the medicines they prescribe.

All I am saying is that a lot more medications can cause sexual side effects than you would think. And both antihistamines and melatonin have been known to have sexual side effects.

To optimise recovery from PSSD, it is best to eliminate as many prescription drugs as possible,  to remove as many variables that could hinder your recovery.

Why not try stopping the Benadryl for a short while, and see if your allergies get worse? You can always take it again if needs be.

Wow! That is very useful information... I also heard Benadryl acted as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor so it’s even worse than the others. I think I’ll stop both the Benadryl and the melatonin. Alto mentioned some saline rinse people with allergies could use. I might just try that and forget about all antihistamines altogether. I was thinking of taking Claritin instead but it might not even be worth it. We’ll see how things go without antihistamines. I hope one day we will all be posting success stories

As you can see from this article, melatonin has a role in sexual functioning, and its safety when used long term is unknown. I would avoid artificially raising any hormone that is involved in sexual functioning while recovering from PSSD.

Spruce, Zeipii, and 1Day, it might interest you to know that my friend who had almost complete numbness after stopping Prozac 10 months ago is now almost recovered. I don’t want to post a recovery story for him because he wants to wait at least 2 months to make sure he’s recovered, but he’s doing much much better. He had absolute PSSD, genital anesthesia, extreme anorgasmia, and absolutely no libido. I hope this gives you all some hope—it certainly gives me some.

There is a poll on pssdforum from August 2017 asking if people have improved in the past year. Over 65% of the 23 respondents said they had seen progress, while only 35% said they worsened or saw no progress. Also, there is a poll asking how long people have been suffering from PSSD. Most of the 30 people who answered that poll had been suffering for 5 or fewer years. Go to the poll section of that forum to see for yourself. Based on those stats, I think it is reasonable to have hope of eventual recovery from PSSD.

I am glad you are coming around to the idea that PSSD Isn't always permanent potions. I hope you can relax a bit now, and accept that given enough time, you too might heal.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

We're on a mission to get media coverage on a large - possibly even global - scale. Our chance for this might just have come up. Two days ago, The New York Times published an article titled "Many People Taking Antidepressants Discover They Cannot Quit". In this article, they detailed the withdrawal distress that many users suffer, and even touched up some persistent side effects.

Here's the crucial bit:
They want to hear from people like us and will PUBLISH more stories concerning adverse reactions to antidepressants. This could be the breakthrough for PSSD.

The article: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/04/07/health/antidepressants-withdrawal-prozac-cymbalta.html

If you want to help get PSSD into the public eye of millions, please do the following:

write your...
Name (Optional)
Email for contact
Age
Gender
Time since medication
Symptoms (paragraph)

...and email it to ghostpssd@gmail.com
that's it.

Thank you for reading.

"Has anyone heard about inositol? I've read on other forums that some people with PSSD have had some success with it. Supposedly it helps resensitize 5ht-2 receptors (serotonin receptors) which are downregulated (desensitized) with SSRIs. In a crude analogy, it almost seems like a (partial) antidote to SSRIs."

I would be very reluctant to go through the withdrawal just to start another drug not knowing what crazy long term effect it may have on me. I'm really trying to use natural remedies and stay away from pharmaceuticals.

1996 Prozac

1998 switched to Paxil

2000 switched to Celexa 20 mg daily

2013 had reaction/interaction with Celexa/Nexium-stopped Nexium

July 2014 switched to Trintellix 5mg daily.

June 2015 increased Trintellix 10mg daily.

Probiotic 51 billion 1 cap daily

Mega Red 800mg 1 daily

Magnesium 400 mg 1 daily

Hair, skin and nails 1 daily

B12 1000 mg weekly

D3 2000iu every other day.

Hey Loreli.

Yeah, I wouldn’t take any pharmaceuticals. I tried inositol and it helped me slightly with certain pssd symptoms. But not much. It’s also temporary. All sexual issues returned full force once I stopped taking it. Something tells me if it resensitizes receptors temporarily, the brain wouldn’t feel a need to fix them while it’s taking that stuff, therefore taking it would slow down progress. Just my opinion. I think (as Spruce and 1Day have said) we should optimize our healing by staying away from all drugs and supplements during wd/pssd.
